Abstract: Entirely real eigenvalues emerge for non-Hermitian systems if their Hamiltonians are symmetric or antisymmetric under the parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) operations. This fact has led to many unconventional discoveries such as loss-induced lasing, sensor response enhancement and topological energy transfer. One merit of anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ systems is free of any gain, but nonlinear medium is still required in recent efforts on making and utilizing anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ devices. Here, counterintuitively, we propose to achieve a $linear$ anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ device by combining dissipative optical coupling and the Sagnac frequency shifts of counterpropagating lights in a spinning resonator. Anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry and its spontaneous breaking can be well controlled by tuning the spinning velocity of the resonator. Compared with its Hermitian counterpart, 6 times enhancement of optical isolation and 2 orders enhancement of sensing response can be achieved by breaking the anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry. Configured as a new platform to study enhanced light-matter interactions, anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ resonators can also be used in such a wide range of fields as anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ lasers, anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ gyroscopes and anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ topological or chiral photonics.

Abstract:Canonical quantum mechanics postulates Hermitian Hamiltonians to ensure real eigenvalues. Counterintuitively, a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, satisfying combined parity-time (PT) symmetry, could display entirely real spectra above some phase-transition threshold. This stems from the existence of a parameter in the Hamiltonian governing characteristics features of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. Varying this parameter causes real eigenvalues to coalesce and become complex conjugate pairs, signaling the occurrence of a nontrivial phase transition and the breakdown of PT symmetry. Such an appealing discovery has aroused extensive theoretical interest in extending canonical quantum theory by including non-Hermitian but PT-symmetric operators in the last two decades. Despite much fundamental theoretical success in the development of PT-symmetric quantum mechanics, an experimental observation of pseudo-Hermiticity remains elusive as these systems with complex potential seem absent in Nature. But nevertheless, the notion of PT symmetry has survived in many other branches of physics including optics, photonics, AMO physics, acoustics, electronic circuits, and material science over the past ten years, where a judicious balance of gain and loss constitutes ingeniously a PT-symmetric system. Here, although we concentrate upon reviewing recent progress on PT symmetry in optical microcavity systems, we also wish to present some new results that may help to accelerate the research in the area. These compound photonic structures with gain and loss provide a powerful platform for testing various theoretical proposals on PT symmetry, and initiate new possibilities for shaping optical beams and pulses beyond conservative structures. Throughout this article there is an effort to clearly present the physical aspects of PT-symmetry in optical microcavity systems, but mathematical formulations are reduced to the indispensable ones. Readers who prefer strict mathematical treatments should resort to the extensive list of references. Despite the rapid progress on the subject, new ideas and applications of PT symmetry using optical microcavities are still expected in the future.

All-optical Microwave Oscillator Assisted by Parity-Time-symmetry Breaking

Abstract:Parity-time (PT) PT ) symmetry provides a new technique for the manipulation of oscillation modes in the field of microwave photonics. In this paper, we conceive and experimentally demonstrate a simple PT-symmetric all-optical microwave oscillator (AOMO) based on a single polarimetric loop, overcoming the challenges of manipulating gain and loss and mutual coupling ratio and perfect control of the geometry in the dual-loop configurations. We also uncover the analytics of the PT-symmetry condition in an AOMO with a detailed nonquantum description. By controlling the polarization rotation angle of the PT-symmetric structure, two mutually coupled loops with balanced gain and loss are easily conceived, enabling the proposed AOMO to operate in the single mode. The optical-optical feedback modulation and oscillatory frequency selection are implemented using a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) and the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) effect, respectively. Benefiting from the SOA's cross-gain modulation, the SBS-based frequency selection, and the PT- symmetric breaking, dual-wavelength optical signals can be achieved with wideband tunability, very low beating phase noise, and high stability. In the experiment, we successfully generated an oscillating signal tuning from 3 to 30 GHz, and the measured phase noise reached - 103.2 dBc/Hz at 10 GHz and - 90.69 dBc/Hz at 30 GHz at 10-kHz offset frequency.
Band Characteristics of a Parity-Time Symmetric Photonic Crystal Made of Multi-Level Atomic Systems

Abstract:Partity-time symmetry enables a quantum system or an optical/electromagnetic structure to have real eigenvalue spectra of energy (or wave number). A relatively simple and convenient scenario, which takes advantage of multi-level transition and optical pumping in a four-level atomic system, is suggested in order to achieve parity-time symmetry of such an atomic medium. In the present parity-time symmetric atomic vapor, the real part of the obtained electric permittivity is a constant, and the imaginary part is an odd function (e.g., sine function of spatial coordinate). The optical characteristics of such a parity-time symmetric periodic dielectric have also been studied in this paper. It can be found that the Bloch wave numbers in the present periodic dielectric are purely real or purely imaginary. A threshold in the magnitude of the imaginary part of the parity-time symmetric permittivity for emergence of forbidden band is also indicated in our numerical calculation. The present scenario for realizing parity-time symmetric atomic vapor would find potential applications in some new photonic or quantum optical device design and fabrication.

Abstract:The explorations of the quantum-inspired symmetries in optical and photonic systems have witnessed immense research interests both fundamentally and technologically in a wide range of subjects of physics and engineering. One of the principal emerging fields in this context is non-Hermitian physics based on parity-time symmetry, originally proposed in the studies pertaining to quantum mechanics and quantum field theory, recently ramified into diverse set of areas, particularly in optics and photonics. The intriguing physical effects enabled by non-Hermitian physics and PT symmetry have enhanced significant applications prospects and engineering of novel materials. In addition, it has observed increasing research interests in many emerging directions beyond optics and photonics. This Review paper attempts to bring together the state of the art developments in the field of complex non-Hermitian physics based on PT symmetry in various physical settings along with elucidating key concepts and background and a detailed perspective on new emerging directions. It can be anticipated that this trendy field of interest can be indispensable in providing new perspectives in maneuvering the flow of light in the diverse physical platforms in optics, photonics, condensed matter, opto-electronics and beyond, and offer distinctive applications prospects in novel functional materials.

Abstract:Optical systems combining balanced loss and gain provide a unique platform to implement classical analogues of quantum systems described by non-Hermitian parity–time (PT)-symmetric Hamiltonians. Such systems can be used to create synthetic materials with properties that cannot be attained in materials having only loss or only gain. Here we report PT-symmetry breaking in coupled optical resonators. We observed non-reciprocity in the PT-symmetry-breaking phase due to strong field localization, which significantly enhances nonlinearity. In the linear regime, light transmission is reciprocal regardless of whether the symmetry is broken or unbroken. We show that in one direction there is a complete absence of resonance peaks whereas in the other direction the transmission is resonantly enhanced, a feature directly associated with the use of resonant structures. Our results could lead to a new generation of synthetic optical systems enabling on-chip manipulation and control of light propagation.

Abstract:The recently developed notion of parity–time (PT) symmetry in optical systems has spawned intriguing prospects. So far, most experimental implementations have been reported in solid-state systems. Here, we report the first experimental demonstration of optical anti-PT symmetry—the counterpart of conventional PT symmetry—in a warm atomic-vapour cell. Rapid coherence transport via flying atoms leads to a dissipative coupling between two long-lived atomic spin waves, allowing for the observation of the essential features of anti-PT symmetry with unprecedented precision on the phase-transition threshold, as well as refractionless light propagation. Moreover, we show that a linear or nonlinear interaction between the two spatially separated beams can be achieved. Our results advance non-Hermitian physics by bridging to the field of atomic, molecular and optical physics, where new phenomena and applications in quantum and nonlinear optics aided by (anti-)PT symmetry could be anticipated.

Abstract:Parity-time (PT) symmetry is a fundamental notion in quantum field theories. It has opened a new paradigm for non-Hermitian Hamiltonians ranging from quantum mechanics, electronics, to optics. In the realm of optics, optical loss is responsible for power dissipation, therefore typically degrading device performance such as attenuation of a laser beam. By carefully exploiting optical loss in the complex dielectric permittivity, however, recent exploration of PT symmetry revolutionizes our understandings in fundamental physics and intriguing optical phenomena such as exceptional points and phase transition that are critical for high-speed optical modulators. The interplay between optical gain and loss in photonic PT synthetic matters offers a new criterion of positively utilizing loss to efficiently manipulate gain and its associated optical properties. Instead of simply compensating optical loss in conventional lasers, for example, it is theoretically proposed that judiciously designed delicate modulation of optical loss and gain can lead to PT synthetic lasing that fundamentally broadens laser physics. Here, we report the first experimental demonstration of PT synthetic lasers. By carefully exploiting the interplay between gain and loss, we achieve degenerate eigen modes at the same frequency but with complex conjugate gain and loss coefficients. In contrast to conventional ring cavity lasers with multiple modes, the PT synthetic micro-ring laser exhibits an intrinsic single mode lasing: the non-threshold PT broken phase inherently associated in such a photonic system squeezes broadband optical gain into a single lasing mode regardless of the gain spectral bandwidth. This chip-scale semiconductor platform provides a unique route towards fundamental explorations of PT physics and next generation of optoelectronic devices for optical communications and computing.

Abstract:In the past decade, the concept of parity-time symmetry, originally introduced in non-Hermitian extensions of quantum mechanical theories, has come into thinking of photonics, providing a fertile ground for studying, observing, and utilizing some of the peculiar aspects of symmetry in optics. Together with related concepts of non-Hermitian physics of open quantum systems, such as non-Hermitian degeneracies (exceptional points) and spectral singularities, symmetry represents one among the most fruitful ideas introduced in optics in the past few years. Judicious tailoring of optical gain and loss in integrated photonic structures has emerged as a new paradigm in shaping the flow of light in unprecedented ways, with major applications encompassing laser science and technology, optical sensing, and optical material engineering. In this perspective, I review some of the main achievements and emerging areas of -symmetric and non-Hermtian photonics, and provide an outline of challenges and directions for future research in one of the fastest growing research area of photonics.

Abstract:Quantum Langevin noise makes experimental realization of genuine quantum-optical parity-time (PT) symmetry in a gain-loss-coupled open system elusive. Here, we challenge this puzzle by exploiting twin beams produced from a nonlinear parametric process, one undergoing phase-sensitive linear quantum amplification (PSA) and the other engaging balanced loss merely. Unlike all previous studies involving phase-insensitive amplification (PIA), our PSA-loss scheme allows one quadrature pair to experience PT symmetry, a unique quantum effect without any classical counterpart. Such symmetry showcases many radical noise behaviors beyond conventional quantum squeezing and inaccessible to any PIA-based platform. Importantly, it is the only non-Hermitian system hitherto that enables the emergence of non-Hermiticity-induced quantum-to-classical transition for the same quantum observable when crossing exceptional point. Utilizing this quadrature-PT structure, we have further studied its potential in quantum sensing by exploring the quantum Cram\'er-Rao bound or Fisher information. Besides, the proposed quadrature PT symmetry also sheds new light on protecting continuous-variable (CV) qubits from decoherence in lossy transmission, a long-standing conundrum for various CV-based quantum technologies.

Abstract:Abstract Parity-time (PT) symmetry has been unveiling new photonic regimes in non-Hermitian systems, with opportunities for lasing, sensing and enhanced light-matter interactions. The most exotic responses emerge at the exceptional point (EP) and in the broken PT-symmetry phase, yet in conventional PT-symmetric systems these regimes require large levels of gain and loss, posing remarkable challenges in practical settings. Floquet PT-symmetry, which may be realized by periodically flipping the effective gain/loss distribution in time, can relax these requirements and tailor the EP and PT-symmetry phases through the modulation period. Here, we explore Floquet PT-symmetry in an integrated photonic waveguide platform, in which the role of time is replaced by the propagation direction. We experimentally demonstrate spontaneous PT-symmetry breaking at small gain/loss levels and efficient control of amplification and suppression through the excitation ports. Our work introduces the advantages of Floquet PT-symmetry in a practical integrated photonic setting, enabling a powerful platform to observe PT-symmetric phenomena and leverage their extreme features, with applications in nanophotonics, coherent control of nanoscale light amplification and routing.

Abstract:In this work, the optical properties and dynamical behaviors of the optical parametric oscillation under the anti Parity-Time (anti-PT) symmetry are studied. The non-Hermitian optical system is composed of two whispering-gallery mode micorcavities with one cavity supports the χ2 nonliearity. Compared with the previous non-Hermitian system that relies on optical gain and loss, the proposed system could achieve the ultra-fast control of anti-PT symmetry by adjusting the parameter gain and coupling strength. Moreover, by focusing on the anti-PT symmetrical system and asymmetrical gain under linear pumping conditions, we find that the system provides the asymmetric transmission under the anti-PT symmetry, meanwhile the nonreciprocal transmission would be achieved by breaking the antiPT symmetry. We believe these results may be further applied to optical diodes, optical switches and other optical devices which may pave the way of nanophotonics and quantum information science.

Abstract:Temporal interfaces introduced by abrupt switching of the constitutive parameters of unbounded media enable unusual wave phenomena. So far, their explorations have been mostly limited to lossless media. Yet, non-Hermitian phenomena leveraging material loss and gain, and their balanced combination in parity-time (PT)-symmetric systems, have been opening new vistas in photonics. Here, we unveil the role that temporal interfaces offer in non-Hermitian physics, introducing the dual of PT symmetry for temporal boundaries. Our findings reveal unexplored interference mechanisms enabling extreme energy manipulation, and open new scenarios for time-switched metamaterials, connecting them with the broad opportunities offered by non-Hermitian phenomena.

Abstract:The concept of parity-time symmetry (PT symmetry) originates from the canonical quantum mechanics and has become a hot topic recently. As a versatile platform to investigate the intriguing concept, both theoretical and experimental works in optics have been implemented. In this paper, the PT symmetry breaking phenomenon is investigated in a coupled nanobeam cavity system. An exceptional point is observed during the tuning of the gain/loss level and the coupling strength of the closely placed nanobeam pair. Unidirectional light propagation is investigated, as well as enhanced sensitivity of single particle detection in the vicinity of the exceptional point. The proposed system is easy to be integrated with photonic integrated circuits and can be strongly coupled to optical waveguides.

Abstract:In standard quantum mechanics, the Hamiltonian describing the physical system is generally Hermitian, so as to ensure that the system has real energy spectra and that the system’s evolution is unitary. In recent years, it has been found that non-Hermitian Hamiltonians with parity-time (\begin{document}${\cal {PT}}$\end{document}) symmetry also have real energy spectra, and there is a novel non-Hermitian exceptional point between \begin{document}${\cal {PT}}$\end{document}-symmetric phase and \begin{document}${\cal {PT}} $\end{document}-symmetry-broken phase, which is unique to non-Hermitian systems. Recently, people have realized \begin{document}${\cal {PT}} $\end{document} symmetric and anti-\begin{document}${\cal {PT}}$\end{document} symmetric non-Hermitian Hamiltonians in various physical systems and demonstrated novel quantum phenomena, which not only deepened our understanding of the basic laws of quantum physics, but also promoted the breakthrough of application technology. This review will introduce the basic physical principles of \begin{document}${\cal {PT}} $\end{document} symmetry and anti-\begin{document}${\cal {PT}}$\end{document} symmetry, summarize the schemes to realize \begin{document}${\cal {PT}} $\end{document} symmetry and anti-\begin{document}${\cal {PT}} $\end{document} symmetry in optical and atomic systems systematically, including the observation of \begin{document}${\cal {PT}} $\end{document}-symmetry transitions by engineering time-periodic dissipation and coupling in ultracold atoms and single trapped ion, the realization of anti-\begin{document}${\cal {PT}} $\end{document} symmetry in dissipative optical system by indirect coupling, and realizing anti-\begin{document}${\cal {PT}} $\end{document}-symmetry through fast atomic coherent transmission in flying atoms. Finally, we review the research on precision sensing using non-Hermitian exceptional points of \begin{document}${\cal {PT}} $\end{document}-symmetric systems. Near the exceptional points, the eigenfrequency splitting follows an \begin{document}${\varepsilon }^{\tfrac{1}{N}}$\end{document}-dependence, where the \begin{document}$\varepsilon$\end{document} is the perturbation and \begin{document}$ N $\end{document} is the order of the exceptional point. We review the \begin{document}${\cal {PT}}$\end{document}-symmetric system composed of three equidistant micro-ring cavities and enhanced sensitivity at third-order exceptional points. In addition, we also review the debate on whether exceptional-point sensors can improve the signal-to-noise ratio when considering noise, and the current development of exceptional-point sensors, which is still an open and challenging question.

Abstract:While gain-loss-coupled photonic platforms have achieved significant success in studying classical parity-time (PT) symmetry, they encounter challenges in demonstrating pure quantum effects due to incompatible operator transformations and Langevin noise. Here, we present compelling evidence that a non-Hermitian (NH) twin-beam system, undergoing phase-sensitive amplification (PSA) and balanced loss, not only enables observing the usual eigenvalue-associated PT phase transition but also exhibits distinctive features absent in classical NH or Hermitian quantum scenarios, encompassing quadrature PT symmetry, anomalous loss-induced quadrature squeezing, and dynamical and stationary classical-to-quantum transitions in noise fluctuations. Furthermore, our proposed bipartite open system promises optimal sensing, showcasing an improved signal-to-noise ratio and sensitivity, constrained by quantum Cramér-Rao bound or Fisher information. These findings deepen the comprehension of authentic quantum optical PT symmetry involving both gain and loss, addressing contentious issues and illuminating new facets of the subject.

Abstract:Non-Hermitian photonics based on parity-time (PT) symmetry has been considered an effective solution to achieve mode selection for optical or microwave single-mode oscillation. A PT-symmetric system is usually implemented using two mutually coupled elements with identical geometry or a single element based on precise longitudinal refractive index modulation. In this study, we propose a novel scheme to achieve PT symmetry based on polarization mode manipulation in a single optical loop. By controlling the polarization states of two light waves that are propagating along the clockwise (CW) and counter-clockwise (CCW) directions in the single optical loop, two equivalent mutually-coupled loops with identical geometry and a balanced gain and loss are formed. Based on this concept, a wavelength-tunable single-mode fiber laser with a sub-kHz linewidth is realized. The tunability is achieved by thermally tuning the wavelength of an integrated microdisk resonator (MDR) incorporated in the optical loop. Experimental results show that a continuously tunable single-mode laser with a sub-kHz linewidth of 640 Hz and a wavelength tuning range from 1552.953 to 1554.147 nm is realized. The key advantages of using a single optical loop to implement PT symmetry include greatly simplified implementation and highly improved stability. The demonstration opens new avenues to implement high-performance PT-symmetric systems for applications in photonic and microwave photonic systems.
