Abstract:A trace element, known as a minor element, is a chemical element whose concentration is very low. They are divided into essential and non-essential classes. Numerous physiological and metabolic processes in both plants and animals require essential trace elements. These essential trace elements are so directly related to the metabolic and physiologic processes of the organism that either their excess or deficiency can result in severe bodily malfunction or, in the worst situations, death. Elements can be found in nature in various forms and are essential for the body to carry out its varied functions. Trace elements are crucial for biological, chemical, and molecular cell activity. Nutritional deficits can lead to weakened immunity, increased susceptibility to oral and systemic infections, delayed physical and mental development, and lower productivity. Trace element enzymes are involved in many biological and chemical processes. These compounds act as co-factors for a number of enzymes and serve as centers for stabilizing the structures of proteins and enzymes, allowing them to mediate crucial biological processes. Some trace elements control vital biological processes by attaching to molecules on the cell membrane's receptor site or altering the structure of the membrane to prevent specific molecules from entering the cell. Some trace elements are engaged in redox reactions. Trace elements have two purposes. They are required for the regular stability of cellular structures, but when lacking, they might activate alternate routes and induce disorders. Therefore, thoroughly understanding these trace elements is essential for maintaining optimal health and preventing disease.

Abstract:Trace elements have a number of important physiological functions including roles in the elaboration of protein structure and in the synthesis of biological macromolecules such as enzymes,hormones,and vitamins,where they are bound to certain proteins and other organic precursors.Trace element research is an interdisciplinary area of scientific research with great importance for human survival and health.China has an historic record of developing researchers,with varied professional backgrounds,many of whom have made fundamental contributions to the field.In recent years,the pace of these contributions has accelerated,with more and more outstanding overseas researchers returning to work in China.Many excellent,original research projects have been conducted.We are proud to report the results of some of them here.The information is organized to make it available to readers rapidly and accurately.We believe these results represent the leading edge of trace element research worldwide and place China at the forefront of the field.

Abstract:Trace metal elements, such as iron, copper, manganese, and zinc, are essential nutrients for biological processes. Although their intake demand is low, they play a crucial role in cell homeostasis as the cofactors of various enzymes. Symbiotic intestinal microorganisms compete with their host for the use of trace metal elements. Moreover, the metabolic processes of trace metal elements in the host and microorganisms affect the organism's health. Supplementation or the lack of trace metal elements in the host can change the intestinal microbial community structure and function. Functional changes in symbiotic microorganisms can affect the host's metabolism of trace metal elements. In this review, we discuss the absorption and transport processes of trace metal elements in the host and symbiotic microorganisms and the effects of dynamic changes in the levels of trace metal elements on the intestinal microbial community structure. We also highlight the participation of trace metal elements as enzyme cofactors in the host immune process. Our findings indicate that the host uses metal nutrition immunity or metal poisoning to resist pathogens and improve immunity.

Abstract:Trace elements mean elements present at low concentrations (mg kg-1 or less) in agroecosystems. Some trace elements, including copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), molybdenum (Mo), and boron (B) are essential to plant growth and are called micronutrients. Except for B, these elements are also heavy metals, and are toxic to plants at high concentrations. Some trace elements, such as cobalt (Co) and selenium (Se), are not essential to plant growth but are required by animals and human beings. Other trace elements such as cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), mercury (Hg), and arsenic (As) have toxic effects on living organisms and are often considered as contaminants. Trace elements in an agroecosystem are either inherited from soil parent materials or inputs through human activities. Soil contamination with heavy metals and toxic elements due to parent materials or point sources often occurs in a limited area and is easy to identify. Repeated use of metal-enriched chemicals, fertilizers, and organic amendments such as sewage sludge as well as wastewater may cause contamination at a large scale. A good example is the increased concentration of Cu and Zn in soils under long-term production of citrus and other fruit crops. Many chemical processes are involved in the transformation of trace elements in soils, but precipitation-dissolution, adsorption-desorption, and complexation are the most important processes controlling bioavailability and mobility of trace elements in soils. Both deficiency and toxicity of trace elements occur in agroecosystems. Application of trace elements in fertilizers is effective in correcting micronutrient deficiencies for crop production, whereas remediation of soils contaminated with metals is still costly and difficult although phytoremediation appears promising as a cost-effective approach. Soil microorganisms are the first living organisms subjected to the impacts of metal contamination. Being responsive and sensitive, changes in microbial biomass, activity, and community structure as a result of increased metal concentration in soil may be used as indicators of soil contamination or soil environmental quality. Future research needs to focus on the balance of trace elements in an agroecosystem, elaboration of soil chemical and biochemical parameters that can be used to diagnose soil contamination with or deficiency in trace elements, and quantification of trace metal transport from an agroecosystem to the environment.

Abstract:Owing to the irreplaceable role of traditional Chinese medicine in the history of human resistance to diseases, medicine food homology teas (MFHTs) have emerged as a widely-consumed daily drink, although they may contain toxic or excessive trace elements. This study aims to determine the total and infused concentrations of nine trace elements (Fe, Mn, Zn, Cd, Cr, Cu, As, Pb, and Ni) in 12 MFHTs collected from 18 provinces in China, to evaluate their potential risks to human health, and to explore the factors affecting the trace element enrichment in traditional MFHTs. The exceedances of Cr (82%) and Ni (100%) in 12 MFHTs were higher than those of Cu (32%), Cd (23%), Pb (12%), and As (10%). The high values of the Nemerow integrated pollution index of dandelions and Flos sophorae (25.96 and 9.06, respectively) indicate severe trace metal pollution. The health risk assessment results showed that As, Cr, and Mn in the 12 types of MFHTs posed high non-carcinogenic risk. Honeysuckle and dandelion teas may be hazardous to human health through trace element exposure when consumed daily. The enrichment of Cr, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Mn, and Pb in MFHTs is influenced by the MFHT type and producing area, whereas As and Cd are mainly controlled by the MFHT type. Environmental factors such as soil background values, rainfall, and temperature also affect the enrichment of trace elements in MFHTs collected from different producing areas.

Abstract:【Objective】 To understand the present status of nutrition and trace elements for children under 3 years and give suggestion for improving children's health. 【Methods】 Nutrition survey which included microelement tested and diet investigation was carried out in 311 children under 3 years by software in children healthcare outpatient. 【Results】 Intake of zinc was lower than 80% DRIs(Dietary Reference Intakes).The rate of calcium(Ca),zinc(Zn) and iron(Fe) deficiency in blood were 19.3%,8.4% and 2.3% respectively.Calculating the intake of nutrients,there was significant high in the levels of carbohydrate in the Ca deficiency's group.Significant difference in fat was detected between the two Zn groups.There was correlation between the levels of vitamin C and Fe deficiency. 【Conclusions】 Proportions and quantity of the nutrients intakes are normal among healthy infants and toddlers.Parents need to help children to develop good food habit.

Abstract:The concentrations of four human essential trace elements [iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn), chromium (Cr)] and non-essential elements [cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), arsenic (As), and mercury (Hg)] in eighteen animal-based foods including meat, fish, and shellfish collected from markets in Shanghai, China, were analyzed, and the associated human daily intake and uptake considering bioaccessibility were estimated. The mean concentration ranges for eight trace elements measured in the foods were 3.98–131µgg−1 for Fe, 0.437–18.5µgg−1 for Mn, 5.47–53.8µgg−1 for Zn, none detected–0.101µgg−1 for Cr, 2.88×10−4–2.48×10−2µgg−1 for Cd, 1.18×10−3–0.747µgg−1 for Pb, none detected–0.498µgg−1 for As, and 8.98×10−4–6.52×10−2µgg−1 for Hg. The highest mean concentrations of four human essential elements were all found in shellfish. For all the trace elements, the observed mean concentrations are mostly in agreement with the reported values around the world. The total daily intake of trace elements via ingestion of animal-based food via an average Shanghai resident was estimated as 7371µgd−1 for the human essential elements and 13.0µgd−1 for the human non-essential elements, but the uptake decreased to 4826µgd−1 and 6.90µgd−1, respectively, after trace element bioaccessibility was considered. Livestock and fish for human essential and non-essential elements, respectively, were the main contributor, no matter whether the bioaccessibility was considered or not. Risk estimations showed that the intake and uptake of a signal trace element for an average Shanghai resident via ingestion animal-based foods from Shanghai markets do not exceed the recommended dietary allowance values; consequently, a health risk situation is not indicated.
Dietary sources apportionment and health risk assessment for trace elements among residents of the Tethys-Himalayan tectonic domain in Tibet, China

Abstract:Dietary intake of toxic elements (TEs) and essential trace elements (ETEs) can significantly impact human health. This study collected 302 samples, including 78 food, 104 drinking water, 73 cultivated topsoil, and 47 sedimentary rock from a typical area of Tethys-Himalaya tectonic domain. These samples were used to calculate the average daily dose of oral intake (ADDoral) and assess the health risks of five TEs and five ETEs. The results indicate that grain and meat are the primary dietary sources of TEs and ETEs for local residents. The intake of manganese (Mn) and copper (Cu) is mainly from local highland barley (66.90% and 60.32%, respectively), iron (Fe) is primarily from local grains (75.51%), and zinc (Zn) is mainly from local yak meat (60.03%). The ADDoral of arsenic (As), Mn, Fe and Zn were found to be higher than the maximum oral reference dose in all townships of study area, indicating non-carcinogenic health risks for local residents. Additionally, lead (Pb) and nickel (Ni) in 36.36% townships, and Cu in 81.82% townships were above the maximum oral reference dose, while As posed a carcinogenic risk throughout the study area. The concentrations of As, mercury (Hg), Pb, Mn, Cu Fe and selenium (Se) in grains were significantly correlated with those in soils. Moreover, the average concentrations of As in Proterozoic, Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous was 43.09, 12.41, 15.86 and 6.22 times higher than those in the South Tibet shell, respectively. The high concentrations of TEs and ETEs in the stratum can lead to their enrichment in soils, which, in turn, can result in excessive intake by local residents through the food chain and biogeochemical cycles . To avoid the occurrence of some diseases caused by dietary intake, it is necessary to consume a variety of exotic foods, such as high-selenium foods, foreign rice and flour in order to improve the dietary structure.

Abstract:Objective To investigate the levels of serum trace elements, so as to provide reference for prevention and health care work for children.Methods The levels of copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg) and iron (Fe) in venous blood of 2 945 children aged 2 -6 years old were detected by multielement analyzer with whole blood and serum, and the results were statistically analyzed.Results Trace elements in blood of children in Xi’ an City were deficient in different degree, and the lack rate of Ca was highest (55.7%), followed by Fe and Zn (32.5%).There was significant difference in contents of Cu, Zn and Fe in different groups (F value was 11.27, 212.89 and 19.92, respectively, all P <0.01), but no difference was found in Ca and Mg contents among groups and between different genders (all P>0.01).Conclusion The prevention and control work on trace elements deficiency in children should attract much attention.Trace elements should be detected in children on time for early discovery, diagnosis and treatment to ensure the healthy growth of them.
Do Trace Metal(loid)s in Road Soils Pose Health Risks to Tourists? A Case of a Highly-Visited National Park in China

Abstract:Nowadays,more people tend to spend their recreational time in large national parks,and trace metal(loid)s in soils have attracted long-term attention due to their possible harm to human health.To investigate the pollution levels,potential sources and health risks of trace metal(loid)s in road soils,a total of eight trace metal(loid)s (including As,Cd,Cr,Cu,Ni,Pb,Zn and Hg) from 47 soil samples along roads were studied in the Huangshan National Park in Southeast China.The results showed that the concentrations of As,Cd,Pb,Zn and Hg appeared different degrees of pollution compared with their corresponding background val-ues.According to the pollution indices,Hg and Cd were recognized as significant pollutants presenting moderate to high ecological risk.Combining principal component analysis and positive matrix factorization model,the results showed that traffic,industrial,agricultural and natural sources were the potential origins of trace metal(loid)s in this area,with contri-bution rates of 39.93％,25.92％,10.53％ and 23.62％,respectively.Non-carcinogenic risks were all negligible,while the carcinogenic risk of As was higher than the limit (1 × 10-6).More-over,children were more susceptible to trace metal(loid)s by ingestion which appeared to be a more important exposure pathway than dermal contact and inhalation.The contribu-tion rates of different sources to non-carcinogenic risks and carcinogenic risks were similar among children and adults,while traffic and industrial sources have a significant impact on health risks.This study will give more insights to control the environmental risks of trace metal(loid)s in national parks.

Abstract:Trace element is known to be one major component in determining particulate matter (PM) toxicities. However, there is still no accurate assessment of the toxic potency of the mixed valences. Here, we reported the oxidative stress and cytotoxicity potencies of 14 trace elements in their various valence states and estimated the toxic gaps of inorganic PM resulting from variations in element valences. Substantial discrepancies of up to 3 orders of magnitude in toxic potencies were observed among their different valences. When considering their abundance in PM, the toxicity gaps are estimated to range from 5 to 6 times between the greatest and weakest toxic valence states in the inorganic PM emitted from industrial sources, with iron contributing to 65.5%-91.0% of the overall gaps. Furthermore, the relative toxic variation of inorganic PM shows a significant correlation with the additive toxicities of Fe(II) and Fe(III) ions during aging process. The finding highlights that the multiple coexisting valence states of trace elements in PM need to be taken into account when estimating their toxic potencies.

Abstract:Abstract Speciation affects the bioavailability and toxicity of elements and so is important in toxicology and nutrition. Exploitation of speciation profiles in medical management is widely unexplored. Isotopic speciation in the body can also offer clues to sources of exposure. The redox state of some elements determines toxicity and affects transport across biological barriers. Distinguishing inorganic from organometallic forms of Hg, Pb, and Sn is important to assess exposure to the more toxic organometallic species, whereas the organic forms of the metalloids As and Se reflect metabolism and detoxification. Special questions of speciation arise in therapeutic metal chelation and the use of metal-based drugs, contrast, and imaging agents. Essential elements in blood plasma are distributed among one or more macromolecular species, with generally a small low molecular mass fraction that is difficult to define because of the complex composition of the biological fluid, including amino and other organic acids, and thiols. Albumin and/or transferrin dominate the macromolecular species of many essential and non-essential elements.

Abstract:Objective To study the distribution of selected nutritional and toxic trace elements in mother's hair, venous blood, and cord blood, and the blocking effects of the placental barrier to the transportation of trace elements from mother to her baby. Methods We selected 60 healthy women as the study subjects, and collected their scalp hair, venous blood and cord blood samples. We also collected hair washing frequency information, a confounding factor.Laboratory hair washing was performed according to the IAEA recommended procedure, and the microwave digestion method was used to digest hair and blood samples. Trace elements,detected by ICP-MS method, include: nutritional elements, Zn, Cu, Cr, Mn, Co and Mo; toxic elements, Pb, As, Cd and Hg; and the Lanthanons: La, Pr, Nd and Y. Results Levels of 14 elements in the hair were significantly higher than their corresponding levels in venous blood and cord blood. Both the correlation and the partial correlation studies showed that there were positive correlation relationships between venous blood and cord blood for elements of Zn, Mn, Co, Mo, Pb, As, Hg, Y, La, Pr and Nd, and positive correlation relationships were also found between mother's hair and cord blood for elements of Pb and HAs for the hair and the venous blood, positive correlation relationships were also found for elements of Mn and Cd. Conclusion Trace elements in mother's blood have influences on the fetus, and trace element in scalp hair reflects long-term average body exposure.

Abstract:Abstract: Lipid metabolism is a complex process that includes lipid uptake, transport, synthesis, and degradation. Trace elements are vital in maintaining normal lipid metabolism in the human body. This study explores the relationship between serum trace elements and lipid metabolism Methods: In this study, we reviewed articles on the relationship between alterations in somatic levels of zinc, iron, calcium, copper, chrome, manganese, selenium, and lipid metabolism. In this systematic review and mate-analysis, databases such as PubMed, Web of Science, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang was searched for articles on the relationship published between January 1, 1900, and July 12, 2022. The meta-analysis was performed using Review Manager5.3 (Cochrane Collaboration). Results: No significant association was found between serum zinc and dyslipidemia, while other serum trace elements (Iron, selenium, copper, chromium, and manganese) were associated with hyperlipidemia. Conclusion: The present study suggested that the human body's zinc, copper, and calcium content may be related to lipid metabolism. However, findings on lipid metabolism and Iron, Manganese have not been conclusive. In addition, the relationship between lipid metabolism disorders and selenium levels still needs to be further studied. Further research is needed on treating lipid metabolism diseases by changing trace elements.

Abstract:Objective To understand the contents of iron,zinc,calcium and lead in children body at the aged 0~5 of Tianhe district.To explore the control measures when lack of trace elements,and provided references for add reasonable to children.Method 1 326 samples came from outpatients in our hosptial at the age of 0~5 in 2009,using Beijing Bohui BH5100 atomic absorption spectrometry determination the contents of iron,zinc,calcium in peripheral blood,blood lead analyzed by BH2100.Results In children body first lack of zinc(29.40%),iron followed(26.21%),calcium was the third(15.72%).The lead average was 56.5μg / L at 0~1 years old group and up to 88.3μg / L at 5 years old.Conclusions 0 to 5 years old is the fastest period of growth and development,and zinc,iron,calcium are prone to deficiency at that time,the younger the more likely lack of,but the blood lead increase.parents should strengthen health education,know dietary collocation and reasonable diet.These suggest that child health care workers should take different interventions under the age groups.

Abstract:The total concentrations of trace metals and metalloids in soils, their chemical forms, mobility and availability to the food chain, provide the basis for a range of problems in crop, animal and human health. Some 15 elements present in rocks and soils, normally in very small amounts, are essential for plant and/or animal nutrition. Boron, copper, iron, manganese, molybdenum, silicon, vanadium and zinc are required by plants; copper, cobalt, iodine, iron, manganese, molybdenum, selenium and zinc by animals. The roles of arsenic, fluorine, nickel, silicon, tin and vanadium have also been established in recent years in animal nutrition. In large concentrations, many of the trace elements/metals may be toxic to plants and/or animals, or may affect the quality of foodstuffs for human consumption. These potentially toxic elements include arsenic, boron, cadmium, copper, fluorine, lead, mercury, molybdenum, nickel, selenium and zinc.
