Abstract:This study was conducted to assess the levels of trace elements and their relationship with growth and development of children in Shanghai, China, to offer scientific evidence for supplementing trace elements in children. A stratified, clustered, random sampling method was used in the study. Blood samples were taken from 2141 Shanghai children from 0 to 6.0 years old, and the concentrations of zinc (Zn), calcium (Ca), iron (Fe), copper (Cu), and magnesium (Mg) were measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Nutritional status was determined and Z -scores of anthropometric parameters, such as height for age (HFA), weight for age (WFA), and body mass index (BMI) were calculated, indicated by HAZ, WAZ, and BMIZ, respectively. The overall median blood levels of Zn, Ca, Fe, Cu, and Mg were 8.83, 79.02, 9.49, 1.04, and 15.45 mg/L, respectively. Fe, Cu, and Mg increased with age and Zn, Fe, and Cu differed by sex. HAZ and WAZ were positively correlated with Zn ( r 2 = 0.072 and 0.053, respectively; P < 0.05). Trace elements were significantly related to children’s growth and development. Dietary supplementation and screening of nutritional states are potential solutions to improve children’s growth and development.

Abstract:【Objective】 To understand the present status of nutrition and trace elements for children under 3 years and give suggestion for improving children's health. 【Methods】 Nutrition survey which included microelement tested and diet investigation was carried out in 311 children under 3 years by software in children healthcare outpatient. 【Results】 Intake of zinc was lower than 80% DRIs(Dietary Reference Intakes).The rate of calcium(Ca),zinc(Zn) and iron(Fe) deficiency in blood were 19.3%,8.4% and 2.3% respectively.Calculating the intake of nutrients,there was significant high in the levels of carbohydrate in the Ca deficiency's group.Significant difference in fat was detected between the two Zn groups.There was correlation between the levels of vitamin C and Fe deficiency. 【Conclusions】 Proportions and quantity of the nutrients intakes are normal among healthy infants and toddlers.Parents need to help children to develop good food habit.

Abstract:Objective To understand the contents of iron,zinc,calcium and lead in children body at the aged 0~5 of Tianhe district.To explore the control measures when lack of trace elements,and provided references for add reasonable to children.Method 1 326 samples came from outpatients in our hosptial at the age of 0~5 in 2009,using Beijing Bohui BH5100 atomic absorption spectrometry determination the contents of iron,zinc,calcium in peripheral blood,blood lead analyzed by BH2100.Results In children body first lack of zinc(29.40%),iron followed(26.21%),calcium was the third(15.72%).The lead average was 56.5μg / L at 0~1 years old group and up to 88.3μg / L at 5 years old.Conclusions 0 to 5 years old is the fastest period of growth and development,and zinc,iron,calcium are prone to deficiency at that time,the younger the more likely lack of,but the blood lead increase.parents should strengthen health education,know dietary collocation and reasonable diet.These suggest that child health care workers should take different interventions under the age groups.

Abstract:Some trace elements are essential for newborns, their deficiency may cause abnormal biological functions, whereas excessive intakes due to environmental contamination may create adverse health effects. This study was conducted to measure the levels of selected trace elements in Chinese fish consumers by assessing their essentiality and toxicity via colostrum intake in newborns, and evaluated the effects of these trace elements on birth outcomes. Trace elements in umbilical cord serum and colostrum of the studied population were relatively high compared with other populations. The geometric means (GM) of estimated daily intake (EDI, mgday−1) of the trace elements were in the safe ranges for infant Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) recommended by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). When using total dietary intake (TDI, mgkg−1bwday−1), zinc (Zn) (0.880mgkg−1bwday−1) and selenium (Se) (6.39×10−3mgkg−1bwday−1) were above the Reference Doses (RfD), set by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Multivariable linear regression analyses showed that Se was negatively correlated with birth outcomes. Our findings suggested that overloading of trace elements due to environmental contamination may contribute to negative birth outcomes.

Abstract:Objective To investigate the levels of serum trace elements, so as to provide reference for prevention and health care work for children.Methods The levels of copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg) and iron (Fe) in venous blood of 2 945 children aged 2 -6 years old were detected by multielement analyzer with whole blood and serum, and the results were statistically analyzed.Results Trace elements in blood of children in Xi’ an City were deficient in different degree, and the lack rate of Ca was highest (55.7%), followed by Fe and Zn (32.5%).There was significant difference in contents of Cu, Zn and Fe in different groups (F value was 11.27, 212.89 and 19.92, respectively, all P <0.01), but no difference was found in Ca and Mg contents among groups and between different genders (all P>0.01).Conclusion The prevention and control work on trace elements deficiency in children should attract much attention.Trace elements should be detected in children on time for early discovery, diagnosis and treatment to ensure the healthy growth of them.

Abstract:Early-life exposure to heavy metals and/or trace metal imbalances can have negative developmental effects. Here we sought to characterize exposure profiles for 20 heavy metals and trace elements in umbilical cord blood plasma and identify demographic predictors of exposure. Twenty metals were measured in cord plasma from 357 Chinese infants using ICP-MS. Relationships between demographic variables and metals were analyzed using generalized linear models and logistic regression. Ten metals (antimony [Sb], cobalt [Co], cesium [Cs], copper [Cu], lead [Pb], molybdenum [Mo], rubidium [Rb], selenium [Se], strontium [Sr], titanium [Ti], zinc [Zn]) were detected in all samples. Season of birth was the strongest predictor of metals in cord blood across analyses. Infants born in the spring had 0.1-0.2 mu g L-1 higher logAs and logCo in their cord blood (beta [95%CI] = 0.22 [0.01,0.42], p = 0.04; 0.11 [0.01,0.22], p = 0.04), while infants born in the summer had higher Sb, logB, logHg, and logZn (beta [95%CI] = 0.74 [0.24,1.24], p = 0.004; 0.11 [0.00,0.21], p = 0.04; 0.29 [0.08,0.49], p = 0.007; 0.18 [0.06,0.31], p = 0.005), compared to those born in fall/winter. Prenatal heavy metal exposure and/or trace metal deficiencies are global concerns because of increasing awareness of downstream developmental effects. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Iron is essential in various life processes, and its imbalance is closely related to disorders in multiple systems such as the nervous, cardiovascular, and immune systems, as well as many chronic diseases such as infections and cancer. Therefore, accurately assessing the status of iron in the body is of great significance for both basic and clinical research. The gold standard for iron status is still bone marrow stainable iron, but its actual application is very limited due to its invasive sampling and high cost. Other traditional biomarkers such as serum iron, ferritin, and related composite indicators are all affected to varying degrees by factors such as inflammation, age, and circadian fluctuations, but they also have their own suitable application scenarios. However, biomarkers that can fully assess iron status are far from perfect, leading to inaccurate diagnosis and treatment of iron imbalance in many cases. Although new biomarkers such as hepcidin, reticulocyte hemoglobin content, and erythroferrone have emerged, and with the rapid advancement of high-throughput technologies, multi-omics may help diagnose iron status in the future, more exploration and mining are still needed to expand the widespread and rational application of these potential markers. This article reviews the research progress of iron biomarkers, aiming to provide more references and directions for future related research.

Abstract:Congenital heart defects (CHDs) are congenital abnormalities involving the gross structures of the heart and large blood vessels. Environmental factors, genetic factors and their interactions may contribute to the pathogenesis of CHDs. Generally, trace elements can be classified into essential trace elements and non-essential trace elements. Essential trace elements such as copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), selenium (Se), and manganese (Mn) play important roles in human biological functions such as metabolic function, oxidative stress regulation, and embryonic development. Non-essential trace elements such as cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), lead (Pb), nickle (Ni), barium (Ba), chromium (Cr) and mercury (Hg) are harmful to health even at low concentrations. Recent studies have revealed the potential involvement of these trace elements in the pathogenesis of CHDs. In this review, we summarized current studies exploring exposure to essential and non-essential trace elements and risks of CHDs, in order to provide further insights for the pathogenesis and prevention of CHDs.

Abstract:Objective To study the trace elements for children of diarrhea prevention and assisted effect,trace element analysis for children the importance of growth.Methods Selection in the first half of 2010 in our hospital maternity smooth the production of 200 cases of healthy babies for 42 days check,another choice for the same period different factors of diarrhea hospital 200 pediatric patients as the research object,the baby group will randomly divided into trace elements with A group of control group A,diarrhea children into trace elements group B and the control group B.A control group do not emphasize the use of any trace elements,the control group B use the way in treating pediatric diarrhea,also not give trace elements.Group A trace elements from the date of birth family members told the daily according to basic diets children add trace elements,trace elements of group B in the basic treatment of pediatric diarrhea based on began to add A certain amount of daily trace elements.Observe all participants were followed 12 to 16 months,compared to the baby group diarrhea happen times,another pediatric diarrhea occurred number of diarrhea and curative effect.Results In the follow-up period,healthy babies in A control group in the exclusion of other infectious diarrhea cases showed significantly higher incidence of diarrhea trace elements in group A;And trace elements of group B of diarrhea one-time effective cure rate children was significantly higher than the control group B,its curative effect is better than the control group B.Conclusion Trace elements for pediatric diarrhea may be effectively prevent and reduce for nutritional imbalance caused by diarrhea,and treatment for pediatric diarrhea also has a certain auxiliary effect,in clinical can be widely used for promotion.

Abstract:Magnesium (Mg), iron (Fe), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn) are indispensable elements in children’s growth and development. However, epidemiological evidence regarding essential elements and their mixed exposure to behavior problems remains in its infancy. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the association between essential elements and the manifestation of behavior problems, with an additional focus on the implications of their mixture. An electronic medical records review was performed among 4122 subjects aged 6–18 years who underwent examinations at Children’s Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine, between January 2019 and July 2022. The concentrations of essential elements were measured by atomic absorption spectrometry, and behavior problems were assessed by using the Conners’ Parent Rating Scale (CPRS). A total of 895 (21.7%) children and adolescents were identified as having behavior problems. For single exposure, inversely linear dose–response relationships were identified between continuous Mg and Zn levels and the prevalence of behavior problems, and the prevalence ratios (PRs) in the categorical lowest tertile were 1.28 (95% confidence interval, CI: 1.07–1.54) for Mg and 1.31 (95% CI: 1.05–1.63) for Zn compared to the highest tertile. For mixture exposure, an inverse association between essential elements and behavior problems was also found, mainly contributed by Mg (posterior inclusion probability, PIP = 0.854). Whole blood levels of Mg and Zn were significantly inversely associated with behavior problems. The findings highlight the pivotal role of essential elements in behavior problems and emphasize the importance of maintaining adequate levels of essential elements during children’s maturation.

Abstract:Objective To explore macroelements(Ca,Mg)and trace elements(Fe,Zn,Cu)levels in whole blood of children,and establish their normal range of reference value for clinical care.Methods 20 946 healthy children(12 447males,8 499 females)were divided into 4 groups according to the age(under 1 year,1～3 year,3～6 year,over 6 year).Atomic absorption spectrum was applied to detect the content of Ca,Mg,Fe,Zn,Cu of the blood samples.The data were analyzed and the values of P3,P10,P25,P50,P75,P90,P97 were calculated with SPSS 11.5 software.Results Blood levels of these 5 elements were highly relevant to age.The values of P25～P75 were to be convenient for clinical use.Conclusions Age factor should be considered when judging the normality of these 5 elements.Their normal range in whole blood of children can vary with age.

Abstract:Objective To understand 0-3 years old children' serum trace element content status in a community of Chaoyang district in Beijing,so as to make health intervention measures,implement health interventions,effectively enhance children's health status.Methods Random selected a community in Beijing Chaoyang district,all the children who aged 0-3 took part in the routine physical examination.Informed consent in ethics,serum trace element of 461 children of voluntary were tested.Results The levels of serum lead and serum zinc among children under the age of 1 year old were lower than any other age group,and no difference of serum copper,calcium and magnesium was found between three age groups.There was no gender difference was found in serum trace element level among the children.Conclusion Health education should be strengthened for parents and preschool educators.Solid food should be introduced for babies,adjust the dietary structure,advocate added foods rich in the iron and zinc.

Abstract:Nutrient elements are essential for human health. The intake of nutrient elements (Na, K, Ca, Mg, P, Mn, Fe, Zn, Cu, Se, Mo, and Cr) in the general Chinese population was comprehensively evaluated via a recent total diet study (2016–2019), covering more than two-thirds of the total population. The contents of nutrient elements in 288 composite dietary samples were determined by ICP-MS. The dietary sources, regional distribution, the relationship with the earth's crust, dietary intake, and health effects were discussed. Plant foods were the main source of both macro-elements and trace elements, accounting for 68–96% of total intake. Trace elements in food were compatible with their abundance in the earth's crust. Na intake reduced by 1/4 over the last decade but was still high. The average intake of Ca, Mg, Zn, and Se did not reach the health guidance values, while the average intake of K, P, Mn, Fe, Cu, Mo, and Cr fell within a reasonable range. No element exceeded the UL. However, an imbalance was identified in the dietary Na/K ratio and Ca/P ratio. This paper provides a most recent and national-representative assessment of nutrient element intake, indicating the significance of salt reduction and dietary structure optimization for the population.

Abstract:Objective To explore the level of the trace elements in hair of children in Guangzhou and the correlation analysis. Methods The level of trace elements in hair were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotomtyer and some correlated materials were obtained by using questionnaire. Results The level of Zn, Fe, Cu, Mn, and Ca in hair of children were lower commonly in our city. The boy's deficient ratios were 78.69% ,86.34%,37.16% ,78.69%, and 69.95%, respectively; Zn and Ca , Ca and Mn, Zn and Pb showed correlations. The girl's deficient ratios were 84.30%, 16.86%,47.08%,86.63%, and 86.63% respectively;Zn and Mn, Ca and Mn, Zn and Pb showed correlations. The level of Pb was higher than that of the normal, the boy's exceeding ratio was 72.68%,and girl's was 66.28%. Conclusions We suggest that some trace elements might be related to some clinical manifestation and custom of the children, which is helpful to prevent some diseases in advance and treat them.

Abstract:Summary Trace elements and heavy metals play pivotal roles in health status by regulating a myriad of vital biological functions. Abnormal metal homeostasis has been linked to a constellation of pathogenic complications, including oxidative stress, inflammatory processes, dyslipidemia, and impaired insulin‚Äźmediated metabolism of carbohydrates, thereby increasing the odds of developing childhood obesity and related comorbidities. Herein, we provide a comprehensive revision of recent literature on the association between childhood obesity, trace elements, and heavy metals. Further, we emphasize on the crucial importance of addressing the influence that interindividual variability factors (e.g., sex, age, genetic determinants, concomitance of comorbidities, and environmental factors) may have in modulating the susceptibility to disease development. Altogether, this review article represents a concise guide to better understand the involvement of metals in childhood obesity pathogenesis and discusses future needs with the aim of establishing robust biomarkers in the context of precision medicine.

Six kinds of mineral material level among preschool children in Xianyang area and multivariate regression analysis

Abstract:Objective To analyze the levels of six kinds of trace elements calcium (Ca) ,magnesium(Mg) ,copper(Cu) ,zinc(Zn) , iron(Fe) and plumbum(Pb) among preschool children in Xianyang area ,and influence factor .Methods The cluster random sam-pling method was adopted to sampled 365 preschool children with different genders as research subjects from urban districts (Qindu District ,Weicheng District) ,southern plain districts(except Beiwu County and urban area) and northern mountain districts(Ganjing Town ,Yongshou County) ,in which 118 cases in the urban district group ,118 cases in the southern plain districts group and 129 ca-ses in the northern mountain districts group .The levels of whole blood Ca ,Mg ,Cu ,Zn ,Fe and Pb were detected .The multivariate regression analysis was performed by combining with the questionnaire investigation indicators .Results The levels of Zn and Pb had statistically significant difference among 3 groups(F=13 .145 ,35 .438 ,P<0 .05);in the comparison of feeding and parenting patterns among 3 groups ,the difference was statistically significant (χ2 =37 .409 ,7 .023 ,P<0 .05) .The feeding pattern of domestic milk powder was negatively correlated with the Ca and Fe levels ,the family income was positively correlated with the Ca and Fe lev-els ;the plain district was positively correlated with the Mg level .No adding complementary feeding was negatively correlated with the Mg level ;the skip-generation raising was positively correlated with the Cu level ;relative to the urban area ,the mountain district was negatively correlated with the Zn level and positively correlated with the Pb level ;the dinner as the main thing in the dietary structure was positively correlated with the Zn level .Conclusion The imbalance of different regional economy development in Xian-yang area and different dietary and living style in preschool children are the major causes generating the differences of trace elements levels .It is necessary to formulate the targeting comprehensive prevention and treatment programs for promoting the physical and mental health of children .
