Abstract:Acid treatment of Ti-doped α-Fe 2 O 3 photoanode can reduce the onset potential and promote the photocurrent density for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting reaction. However, the inner mechanism of how this occurs has not yet been clarified. This report compares the effect of HCl hydrothermal treatment on α-Fe 2 O 3 photoanodes doped with Ge, Pt, Ti, and Sn or codoped with TiGe, TiPt, and TiSn. The findings show that the promotion effect of HCl hydrothermal treatment was far less significant on the Ge-, Pt-, and Sn-doped α-Fe 2 O 3 than on the Ti-doped one. In contrast, the codoped photoanodes could realize a lift in the photocurrent of up to 39% at 1.23 V RHE ( versus the reversible hydrogen electrode) and a reduction in the potential onset by ∼60 mV after HCl hydrothermal treatment. Anatase TiO 2 was detected by Raman spectroscopy on the Ti-doped α-Fe 2 O 3 with adequate treatment in HCl solution. Thus, the performance promotion by acid treatment was ascribed to the surface-concentrated Ti–O bonds acting as a passivation layer that could increase the charge-capture capacity and reduce the charge-transfer resistance, as demonstrated by the potential-modulated electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results. HCl treatment of the in situ -doped α-Fe 2 O 3 and an excessive treatment time for the ex situ -doped α-Fe 2 O 3 caused an inhibition in the PEC performance, which could be attributed to the adverse effect of lattice defects induced by acid corrosion. The application scope of HCl treatment on the doped α-Fe 2 O 3 was determined by revealing its working mechanism.

Abstract:In this work, TiO2@BaTiO3@Ag composite photoanodes were synthesized. By fabricating BaTiO3 with different phase structures, the influence of crystalline phase of BaTiO3 on PEC water splitting was investigated. Furthermore, hot electrons generated in the plasmonic effect of Ag nanoparticles can be efficiently injected into TiO2 film with the assistance of spontaneous polarization electric field (SPEF). Benefitting from this SPEF coupled plasmonic effect, the optimized TiO2@BaTiO3@Ag photoanode (T-TB@Ag) achieved a maximum photocurrent density of 7.30 mA cm-2 (1.23 V vs. RHE) under AM 1.5 G simulated sunlight, which is 6 times that of the nonferroelectric cubic phase TiO2@BaTiO3@Ag photoanode (C-TB@Ag). This ferroelectric spontaneous polarization coupling plasmonic effect can effectively reduce carrier recombination and promote the separation of photocarriers, which ultimately increases PEC water splitting activity.

Influence of the Potential on the Charge-Transfer Rate Constant of Photooxidation of Water over Α-Fe2o3 and Ti-Doped Α-Fe2o3

Abstract:It has been reported that applying a certain external anodic potential over un-doped (alpha-Fe2O3) and Ti-doped alpha-Fe2O3 (Ti-Fe2O3) electrodes can improve the photocurrent or the photoelectrochemical oxidation rate of water. However, it is assumed in the literature that the potential drops completely across the side of the solid semiconductor (band edge pinning), and the influence of the potential on the interfacial charge-transfer rate constant is rarely reported. In this article, the impact of the applied potential on the interfacial charge-transfer rate constant during photoelectrochemical oxidation of water over the two electrodes was investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results showed that by increasing the applied anodic potential, the interfacial charge-transfer rate constants for both electrodes were increased. The smaller increase in the magnitude of the rate constant than determined by theory indicates that not all of the applied potential drops across the Helmholtz layer, but takes place in both the space charge and Helmholtz layers simultaneously (Fermi level pinning). The results of the surface-state capacitance measurements suggested that the photo-generated charge can be accumulated in the surface states, resulting in the re-distribution of the potential at the interface and an improvement in the rate constant. Under the same applied potential, the higher the light intensity is, the more the photogenerated holes accumulated in the surface states. This causes an increase in the potential drop across the Helmholtz layer and consequently increases the charge-transfer rate constant. Compared with the alpha-Fe2O3, the improvement of the charge-transfer rate constant by the anodic potential is more obvious.
Highly Enhanced Photoelectrocatalytic Properties by Α-Fe 2 O 3 Modified NF-TiO 2 Pyramids with Dominant (101) Facets

Abstract:Visible-light-active Fe2O3/NF-TiO2 film was prepared by depositing alpha-Fe2O3 nanoparticles onto the surface of pyramid-shaped NF-TiO2 via sequential electro-deposition and electro-anodization processes. NF-TiO2 with dominant (101) facets was obtained via calcining TiO2 nanotubes (TiO2-NTs) in the presence of NH4F. The structural and optical properties were carefully studied by XRD, SEM, HRTEM, XPS and UV-Vis-DRS. Photoelectrochemical measurements, such as linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and Mott-Schottky (M-S) plots, were also carried out to investigate the generation, separation and transfer of photogenerated charges. It was found that Fe2O3/NF-TiO2 exhibited the best photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) activity relative to Fe2O3/TiO2-NTs or Fe2O3/N-TiO2. The formation of anatase-rutile heterojunction, wider spectral response, increased photocurrent response and greatly reduced charge transfer resistance, could be positive driving force for the enhanced PEC activity. Simultaneous PEC reduction of Cr(VI) and degradation of phenol were evaluated under visible light using Fe2O3/NF-TiO2 film as photoanode and Ti sheet as cathode. The calculated rate constants for Cr(VI) and phenol were 4.3 and 3.6 times relative to that on Fe2O3/TiO2-NTs, respectively. Abstract:Effectively regulating and promoting the charge separation and transfer of photoanodes is a key and challenging aspect of photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation. Herein, a Ti-doped hematite photoanode with a CoFe-LDH cocatalyst loaded on the surface was prepared through a series of processes, including hydrothermal treatment, annealing and electrodeposition. The prepared CoFe-LDH/Ti:α-Fe2O3 photoanode exhibited an outstanding photocurrent density of 3.06 mA/cm2 at 1.23 VRHE, which is five times higher than that of α-Fe2O3 alone. CoFe-LDH modification and Ti doping on hematite can boost the surface charge transfer efficiency, which is mainly attributed to the interface interaction between CoFe-LDH and Ti:α-Fe2O3. Furthermore, we investigated the role of Ti doping in enhancing the PEC performance of CoFe-LDH/Ti:α-Fe2O3. A series of characterizations and theoretical calculations revealed that, in addition to improving the electronic conductivity of the bulk material, Ti doping also further enhances the interface coupling of CoFe-LDH/α-Fe2O3 and finely regulates the interfacial electronic structure. These changes promote the rapid extraction of holes from hematite and facilitate charge separation and transfer. The informative findings presented in this work provide valuable insights for the design and construction of hematite photoanodes, offering guidance for achieving excellent performance in photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation.

Abstract:Hematite (α-Fe 2 O 3 ) is an ideal oxide semiconductor candidate for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. Doping of Fe 2 O 3 is known to benefit the PEC water oxidation efficiency, but despite extensive research efforts, the underlying mechanism still remains elusive. In this work, we report a comprehensive study on the relationship between the electronic structure, interfacial reaction kinetics and PEC activity of Ti-doped Fe 2 O 3 photoanodes. The results show that the interfacial charge transfer efficiency at the Fe 2 O 3 /electrolyte interface is the main factor in the significant increase of the PEC activity of doped Fe 2 O 3 . Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy reveals that the interfacial charge transfer efficiency is determined by energy overlap between the water oxidation potential and energy distribution of an intermediate surface state that has been identified as Fe IV =O groups on Fe 2 O 3 surface generated during PEC process. Interestingly, the potential energy distribution of this intermediate surface state can be modulated by Ti doping, and a shift towards a more positive potential of the intermediate surface state increases the overlap with the water oxidation potential and thus enhances the kinetics of charge transfer for PEC water splitting. The origin of such potential energy modulation is traced to the inductive effect from Ti-doping on the Fe 3+ /Fe 4+ redox transition and the Fe-O bond covalency. Our results provide new insight into the mechanism for the doping effect on the PEC water splitting, introducing new strategies to optimize the PEC activity by tuning the redox properties of active metal oxides.

Abstract:Hematite has been recognized as a promising photoanode materials for the photoelectrochemical water splitting application. A Co–Pi/Fe2TiO5/Fe2O3 composite film has been fabricated by photo-assisted electrodeposition of Co–Pi nanoparticles on the surface of Ti-treated Fe2O3 nanorod arrays, grown perpendicularly on the FTO substrate via one-step hydrothermal method. The films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The photocurrent response of obtained photoanode with an enhanced photocurrent density of 1.09 and 0.75 mA/cm2 under front-side and back-side illumination compared to Fe2TiO5/Fe2O3, Co–Pi/Fe2O3, and Co–Pi/Fe2TiO5/Fe2O3, due to the suppressed charge carrier recombination and water oxidation dynamics, further indicating that the different effect for the improvement of PEC performance for the front or back sides. Meanwhile, the onset potential for front-side are also improved compared to back-side illumination. The present work demonstrates an exploration for the possible mechanism of front-side and back-side illumination effect via surface modification treatment for the improvement of PEC water splitting application.

Abstract:Development of low-cost electrocatalysts is a challenging task and has been the focus in the field of advanced water oxidation in comparison to ruthenium and iridium oxide-based electrodes. The current research focused on Ti doped α-Fe2O3 electrodes for water oxidation. The water oxidation rate initially enhanced and then decreased as Ti doping levels increase. The enhanced activity can be ascribed to the increased surface area and charge transfer rate constant kct. The increase in kct results from a greater potential drop on the Helmholtz layer, which is mainly attributed to an increased surface state density. The decreased performance for the electrodes with high Ti levels is due to the formation of a TiO2-Fe2O3 mixture where TiO2 shows poor activity. Moreover, the mechanism of charge transfer is discussed. This study may provide an alternative hematite semiconductor anode for water dark oxidation, environmental pollution control, and may even be helpful for better understanding the photoelectrochemical oxidation of water under the weak light illumination and high bias potential.
Enhancing the photoelectrochemical performance of TiO2 photoanode by employing carbon nanoparticles as electron reservoirs and photothermal materials

Abstract:Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting is regarded as a potential technique for converting solar energy. However, the fast charge recombination and slow water oxidation kinetics significantly have hindered its practical application. It is found that an elevation in operation temperature can activate the charge transport in the photoanodes. Here, a strategy was performed that carbon nanoparticles were employed to TiO2 nanorods, acting as electron reservoirs as well as photothermal materials. More specifically, a record photocurrent density of 1.62 mA cm-2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE has been achieved, accompanied by a high charge separation efficiency of 96% and a long-term durability for 8 h. The detailed experimental results reveal that under NIR light irradiation, the synergistic effect between electron storage and temperature rise leads to accelerated charge transport in the bulk and water oxidation kinetics on the surface. This research offers a new perspective on how to boost the PEC performance of photoelectrodes.
Cathodic Shift of Onset Potential for Water Oxidation on A Ti4+ Doped Fe2o3 Photoanode by Suppressing the Back Reaction

Abstract:We present a surface corrosion method to shift the photocurrent onset potential cathodically for water oxidation on a Ti4+ doped Fe2O3 by about 100 mV. After the surface treatment, the doped hematite photoanodes showed a similar photocurrent onset potential to the lowest values obtained by loading with electrocatalysts or depositing functional over-layers. Moreover, the cathodic shift of the onset potential was preserved well even after a long operating time. The results indicated the effectiveness of this simple surface treatment. In order to make clear the reason for the onset potential shift, the doped hematite samples before and after surface corrosion were investigated by SEM, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), Mott–Schottky and so on. Based on the experimental evidence, we proposed a new mechanism for the onset potential shift. The cathodic shift of the onset potential was due to decreasing the back reaction, but not accelerating water oxidation kinetics, passivating surface states or ions adsorption as reported in the previous studies. This strategy of suppressing the back reaction can offer a reference to reduce the overpotential for other photoelectrodes.

Abstract:Designing an efficient photoanode is of great importance for photoassisted solar water splitting. Herein, a series of modifications to a nanorod structure hematite, to be used as anode for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water-splitting reactions is designed. Ti doping, oxygen vacancy formation by N2 treatment, TiO2 passivation, and FeOOH cocatalyst decoration are explored for their roles and contributions to the improvement of the PEC water oxidation performance. It is found that Ti doping and N2 treatment can greatly increase the charge carrier density, which has boosted the photocurrent. TiO2 passivation enhances the photovoltage, resulting in a cathodic shift in the onset potential (≈170 mV with respect to prepassivation). Further, the FeOOH cocatalyst decoration improves the reaction kinetics, thereby improving the overall photoassisted water oxidation performance.

Abstract:Element doping is effective to improve the photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance of photoelectrodes, as it can increase the carrier density and then enhance electrical conductivity for efficient charge transfer. In this study, titanium (Ti) was selectively doped into the bottom and/or top layer of the double layered hematite (alpha-Fe2O3/alpha-Fe2O3) nanorod arrays grown on conducive transparent substrate (F:SnO2, FTO) via a two-step hydrothermal method to optimize the electron donor distribution and improve the charge separation efficiency for a remarkable enhancement in PEC water splitting. It was demonstrated that, by selectively doping Ti into the bottom layer, the obtained FTO/alpha-Fe2O3:Ti/alpha-Fe2O3 nanorod photoanode showed the highest PEC performance for water splitting, with photocurrent density reaching 1.69 mA/cm(2) at 1.9 V vs. RHE under AM 1.5G illumination, which was 4.3 times that of undoped alpha-Fe2O3/alpha-Fe2O3 nanorod film (0.39 mA/cm(2)) and even much higher than the top layer and double layer doped alpha-Fe2O3 nanorod films (FTO/alpha-Fe2O3/alpha-Fe2O3:Ti and FTO/Fe2O3:Ti/alpha-Fe2O3:Ti/alpha-Fe2O3:Ti). By introducing the Ti electron donor dopants into alpha-Fe2O3, the electron density will be increased in the alpha-Fe2O3:Ti layer, raising the Fermi level. For the FTO/Fe2O3:Ti/alpha-Fe2O3 nanorod film, the band realignment will create a terraced band structure and then build an internal electric field at the interface of the bottom and top layers. As a result, the photoexcited electrons and holes will transfer to the FTO substrate and the photoanode surface, respectively, as driven by the internal electric field. This study demonstrated an alternative approach to the design of novel photoanodes with improved PEC performances, by engineering the electron density distribution and the band structure for efficient charge carrier separation.

Abstract:Photoelectrochemical water oxidation mechanism of Ti–Fe2O3/NH2–MIL–53(FeCo) composite photoanode. α–Fe2O3 is a promising photoanode that can be used for solar‐driven photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. However, due to low carrier separation efficiency and slow water oxidation kinetics, the PEC performance of Ti–Fe2O3 is still severely hindered. Here, a novel inorganic–organic hybrid composite photoanode is prepared by depositing NH2–materials of institute Lavoisier (MIL)–53(FeCo) cocatalyst on the surface of Ti–Fe2O3 using solvothermal method. In the results, it is shown that the Ti–Fe2O3/NH2–MIL–53(FeCo) photoanode has a high photocurrent density (3.0 mA cm−2 at 1.23 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), which is 5.1 times that of bare Ti–Fe2O3, and the initial potential of water oxidation also undergoes a negative change of about 100 mV. The separation efficiency of Ti–Fe2O3/NH2–MIL–53(FeCo) is significantly enhanced, and the charge injection efficiency increases from 17.6% to 68% at 1.23 V versus RHE. In the further research, it is suggested that the excellent PEC performance of Ti–Fe2O3/NH2–MIL–53(FeCo) may be attributed to an increase in carrier density, prolonged carrier recombination time, and an increase in exposed reactive sites. In this study, a new understanding for the design of Ti–Fe2O3 photoanodes with superior PEC performance based on metal organic framework modification is provided.

Tannic Acid-Fe complex with dual-function modified TiO2 photoanode for enhanced photoelectrochemical water oxidation

Abstract:TiO2, as a promising photoanode material, has been commonly investigated in recent years, but its poor photoelectric conversion efficiency limits its practical application. Here, we fabricated in-situ a low-cost and eco-friendly tannic acid-Fe modified TiO2 nanorod arrays photoanode (TiO2/Tan-Fe) with improved photoelectric conversion efficiency. Compared with pristine TiO2 nanorod arrays (0.55 mA/cm2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE), the TiO2/Tan-Fe exhibits the enhanced photocurrent density (0.98 mA/cm2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE). The enhancement of photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance is mainly attributed to tannic acid-Fe as a light absorber with a wide absorbance region and increasing charge separation and transport in the composite photoanode, which is testified via ultraviolet–visible absorption, enhanced charge separation efficiency and Motty-Schottky curves, and so on. Importantly, the modification of tannic acid-Fe as a cocatalyst facilitates the water oxidation dynamic, which is confirmed by charge injection efficiency and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). These results indicate that the rationally designed and assembled photoanode has the potential to improve PEC performance and fabricate solar cell for efficient photoelectric conversion.

Abstract:An ultrathin FeOOH cocatalyst is deposited on α-Fe2O3 photoanodes in a simple room temperature immersion process for efficient photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. The prepared FeOOH/Fe2O3 photoanode has a photocurrent density of up to 2.4 mA/cm2 at 1.23 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), and the photocurrent density is increased by about 160% compared to the bare Fe2O3 of 1.55 mA/cm2. An obvious cathodic shift of the photocurrent onset potential from 0.661 to 0.582 V was also observed, and excellent stability was maintained with almost no deterioration for 5 h. The enhanced PEC performance is attributed to the decrease of the interfacial resistance between electrode and electrolyte and the increase of the injection efficiency of holes in Fe2O3.

Abstract:Water splitting using semiconductor photoelectrodes is a promising approach to solar hydrogen production. Previous studies have well-demonstrated that electrochemical reduction (ER) pretreatment of bare and Ti-doped α-Fe2O3 electrodes enhances water photooxidation efficiencies, however, the mechanism underlying this improvement remains poorly understood. In this study, this was quantitatively investigated by multiple photoelectrochemical techniques and transient absorption spectroscopy, using the doped electrodes as examples. The results reveal that the kinetics of photoholes after moving to the electrode surface can be well described by a model of surface-state mediated charge transfer and recombination. The reason for the photocurrent enhancement is attributed to a significantly increased charge transfer rate constant (kct) and a decreased surface recombination rate constant (ksr) by ER. The reason for the accelerated kct is that a new type of surface state, with a favorable energy position for water oxidation, is produced. The decreased ksr is due to the reduced electron density at the surface of the semiconductor, resulted predominately from the negatively shifted flat band potential. These findings provide new insights into the mechanism of water photooxidation and enlighten a simple way to develop more efficient electrodes.
