Abstract:Ti-doped alpha-Fe2O3 (Ti-Fe2O3) is regarded as one of the most promising hematite-based photoanodes for photoelectrochemical oxidation of water. However, the sluggish interfacial transfer and rapid recombination of photo generated holes still limit its efficiency. In this article, we report that an approach of surface modification for this material by electrodeposition in In(NO3)(3) containing aqueous solutions was attempted to overcome these disadvantages. The results show that a thin layer of InOOH was formed on the photoelectrodes, confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. This modification could enhance the photoelectrochemical oxidation rate of water. The reason for the improvement was investigated quantitatively by a combination of multiple (photo-)electrochemical techniques and transient absorption spectroscopy. It is demonstrated that the kinetics of photogenerated holes can be well described by a model of involving photogenerated surface-state mediated charge transfer and recombination. The improvement resulted predominantly from the enhanced interfacial transfer rate constant (kappa(ct)) of the photoholes, despite that the surface recombination rate constant (kappa(sr)) slightly increased. Energetically, the increase in kappa(ct) was attributed to more potential drop in the Helmholtz layer. The higher potential drop resulted from more accumulation of photoholes on the surface due to a larger band bending as the Hatband potential negatively shifted. Physically, the increase in kappa(ct) can be explained by that InOOH acts as a so-called cocatalyst to promote the hole transfer. In addition, the implication of these findings is addressed for further designing efficient Ti-Fe2O3 photoanodes.

Abstract:Development of low-cost electrocatalysts is a challenging task and has been the focus in the field of advanced water oxidation in comparison to ruthenium and iridium oxide-based electrodes. The current research focused on Ti doped α-Fe2O3 electrodes for water oxidation. The water oxidation rate initially enhanced and then decreased as Ti doping levels increase. The enhanced activity can be ascribed to the increased surface area and charge transfer rate constant kct. The increase in kct results from a greater potential drop on the Helmholtz layer, which is mainly attributed to an increased surface state density. The decreased performance for the electrodes with high Ti levels is due to the formation of a TiO2-Fe2O3 mixture where TiO2 shows poor activity. Moreover, the mechanism of charge transfer is discussed. This study may provide an alternative hematite semiconductor anode for water dark oxidation, environmental pollution control, and may even be helpful for better understanding the photoelectrochemical oxidation of water under the weak light illumination and high bias potential.
Highly Enhanced Photoelectrocatalytic Properties by Α-Fe 2 O 3 Modified NF-TiO 2 Pyramids with Dominant (101) Facets

Abstract:Visible-light-active Fe2O3/NF-TiO2 film was prepared by depositing alpha-Fe2O3 nanoparticles onto the surface of pyramid-shaped NF-TiO2 via sequential electro-deposition and electro-anodization processes. NF-TiO2 with dominant (101) facets was obtained via calcining TiO2 nanotubes (TiO2-NTs) in the presence of NH4F. The structural and optical properties were carefully studied by XRD, SEM, HRTEM, XPS and UV-Vis-DRS. Photoelectrochemical measurements, such as linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and Mott-Schottky (M-S) plots, were also carried out to investigate the generation, separation and transfer of photogenerated charges. It was found that Fe2O3/NF-TiO2 exhibited the best photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) activity relative to Fe2O3/TiO2-NTs or Fe2O3/N-TiO2. The formation of anatase-rutile heterojunction, wider spectral response, increased photocurrent response and greatly reduced charge transfer resistance, could be positive driving force for the enhanced PEC activity. Simultaneous PEC reduction of Cr(VI) and degradation of phenol were evaluated under visible light using Fe2O3/NF-TiO2 film as photoanode and Ti sheet as cathode. The calculated rate constants for Cr(VI) and phenol were 4.3 and 3.6 times relative to that on Fe2O3/TiO2-NTs, respectively. Abstract:Tin-doped α-Fe2O3 nanostructured films with further loading of FeOOH cocatalyst are prepared to serve as photoanodes to perform photoelectrochemical water splitting. The abundant oxygen vacancies generated by vacuum heat treatment and the introduced Sn ions resulted in defect sites in the α-Fe2O3 lattice, which improve light absorption. FeOOH supported on the surface of the Sn-Fe2O3 films not only further enhances the absorption of incident light, but also improves the water oxidation kinetics. As a result, the Sn-Fe2O3@ FeOOH composite films reveal much enhanced photoelectrochemical water splitting performance in comparison with the pristine α-Fe2O3 films.
Synergy of Ultrathin CoOx Overlayer and Nickel Single Atoms on Hematite Nanorods for Efficient Photo‐Electrochemical Water Splitting

Abstract:By successively depositing ultrathin CoOx overlayer and Ni single atoms on Ti‐doped α‐Fe2O3 (Ti:Fe2O3) nanorods, the surface electrochemical and electronic properties are rationally engineered to inhibit the surface carrier recombination and accelerate the water oxidation kinetics for the improved photo‐electrochemical water splitting performance. To solve surface carrier recombination and sluggish water oxidation kinetics of hematite (α‐Fe2O3) photoanodes, herein, an attractive surface modification strategy is developed to successively deposit ultrathin CoOx overlayer and Ni single atoms on titanium (Ti)‐doped α‐Fe2O3 (Ti:Fe2O3) nanorods through a two‐step atomic layer deposition (ALD) and photodeposition process. The collaborative decoration of ultrathin CoOx overlayer and Ni single atoms can trigger a big boost in photo‐electrochemical (PEC) performance for water splitting over the obtained Ti:Fe2O3/CoOx/Ni photoanode, with the photocurrent density reaching 1.05 mA cm−2 at 1.23 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), more than three times that of Ti:Fe2O3 (0.326 mA cm−2). Electrochemical and electronic investigations reveal that the surface passivation effect of ultrathin CoOx overlayer can reduce surface carrier recombination, while the catalysis effect of Ni single atoms can accelerate water oxidation kinetics. Moreover, theoretical calculations evidence that the synergy of ultrathin CoOx overlayer and Ni single atoms can lower the adsorption free energy of OH* intermediates and relieve the potential‐determining step (PDS) for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). This work provides an exemplary modification through rational engineering of surface electrochemical and electronic properties for the improved PEC performances, which can be applied in other metal oxide semiconductors as well.

Interface And Surface Engineering Of Hematite Photoanode For Efficient Solar Water Oxidation

Abstract:Engineering the interface and surface structures of semiconductor-based photoelectrodes for improved charge transfer dynamics and promoted water redox reaction kinetics is essential to achieve efficient photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. In this work, alpha -Fe2O3 nanorods, successively coated with TiO2 and CoOx thin layers, were reported as the photoanode for solar-driven water oxidation. The obtained alpha -Fe2O3/TiO2/CoOx photoanode exhibits superior PEC performance as compared to bare alpha -Fe2O3, with a 3.3-time improvement in photocurrent density at 1.23 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode. This significant enhancement results from the formed heterojunction between alpha -Fe2O3 and TiO2 for the accelerated photogenerated charge separation and transfer as well as the passivated surface defects by the TiO2 overlayer for reduced charge recombination. Additionally, the existence of CoOx as the oxygen evolution catalyst significantly facilitates the surface reaction kinetics and thus reduces the overpotential for water oxidation. This study demonstrates a collaborative strategy of interface and surface engineering to design novel structures of alpha -Fe2O3 based photoanodes for highly efficient solar water oxidation.

Abstract:Surface modification and doping of titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanotubes are efficient ways to obtain improved photosensitive characteristics. Here we report photocatalytic activity of alpha-Fe2O3 decorated Ti-Nb-Zr-O nanotube arrays. The Ti-Nb-Zr-O nanotube arrays were fabricated through anodization of Ti-Nb-Zr alloy in electrolytes of 1 M NaH2PO4 containing 0.5 wt% HF. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to characterize the heterojunction nanofilms. Nb- and Zr-doping could enhance the photocatalytic properties of the titanium oxide. However, more Zr-doping could lead to many defects that acted as recombination centers, which reduced the photocatalytic activity of the titanium oxide. The photocurrent density of the Ti-Nb-Zr-O nanotube photoanodes decorated with a small quantity of alpha-Fe2O3 could exhibit three times as high as that of the undoped TiO2 nanotube photoanodes. Abstract:Effectively regulating and promoting the charge separation and transfer of photoanodes is a key and challenging aspect of photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation. Herein, a Ti-doped hematite photoanode with a CoFe-LDH cocatalyst loaded on the surface was prepared through a series of processes, including hydrothermal treatment, annealing and electrodeposition. The prepared CoFe-LDH/Ti:α-Fe2O3 photoanode exhibited an outstanding photocurrent density of 3.06 mA/cm2 at 1.23 VRHE, which is five times higher than that of α-Fe2O3 alone. CoFe-LDH modification and Ti doping on hematite can boost the surface charge transfer efficiency, which is mainly attributed to the interface interaction between CoFe-LDH and Ti:α-Fe2O3. Furthermore, we investigated the role of Ti doping in enhancing the PEC performance of CoFe-LDH/Ti:α-Fe2O3. A series of characterizations and theoretical calculations revealed that, in addition to improving the electronic conductivity of the bulk material, Ti doping also further enhances the interface coupling of CoFe-LDH/α-Fe2O3 and finely regulates the interfacial electronic structure. These changes promote the rapid extraction of holes from hematite and facilitate charge separation and transfer. The informative findings presented in this work provide valuable insights for the design and construction of hematite photoanodes, offering guidance for achieving excellent performance in photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation.

Abstract:To improve the charge carrier transfer ability in the bulk and at the surface of alpha-Fe2O3 and accelerate the water oxidation kinetics at the photoanode/electrolyte interface, herein, starting with Ti-doped alpha-Fe2O3 nanorods, a nitrogen (N) doped carbon (C) nanolayer was coated on the surface of nanorods through a facile hydrothermal method, following a thermal treatment in Ar atmosphere. It was revealed that the N-doped C nanolayer, acting as the passivation layer and/or the water oxidation catalyst, could efficiently extract and collect photoexcited holes from the bulk of alpha-Fe2O3 and then inject them into the electrolyte for the accelerated water oxidation reaction, by inhibiting both the bulk and surface charge carrier recombination. As a result, the photocurrent density of Tidoped alpha-Fe2O3 nanorods coated with N doped C nanolayer was increased by similar to 2.7 folds at 1.8 V vs. RHE, as compared with the pristine one.
Selective Doping of Titanium into Double Layered Hematite Nanorod Arrays for Improved Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

Abstract:Element doping is effective to improve the photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance of photoelectrodes, as it can increase the carrier density and then enhance electrical conductivity for efficient charge transfer. In this study, titanium (Ti) was selectively doped into the bottom and/or top layer of the double layered hematite (alpha-Fe2O3/alpha-Fe2O3) nanorod arrays grown on conducive transparent substrate (F:SnO2, FTO) via a two-step hydrothermal method to optimize the electron donor distribution and improve the charge separation efficiency for a remarkable enhancement in PEC water splitting. It was demonstrated that, by selectively doping Ti into the bottom layer, the obtained FTO/alpha-Fe2O3:Ti/alpha-Fe2O3 nanorod photoanode showed the highest PEC performance for water splitting, with photocurrent density reaching 1.69 mA/cm(2) at 1.9 V vs. RHE under AM 1.5G illumination, which was 4.3 times that of undoped alpha-Fe2O3/alpha-Fe2O3 nanorod film (0.39 mA/cm(2)) and even much higher than the top layer and double layer doped alpha-Fe2O3 nanorod films (FTO/alpha-Fe2O3/alpha-Fe2O3:Ti and FTO/Fe2O3:Ti/alpha-Fe2O3:Ti/alpha-Fe2O3:Ti). By introducing the Ti electron donor dopants into alpha-Fe2O3, the electron density will be increased in the alpha-Fe2O3:Ti layer, raising the Fermi level. For the FTO/Fe2O3:Ti/alpha-Fe2O3 nanorod film, the band realignment will create a terraced band structure and then build an internal electric field at the interface of the bottom and top layers. As a result, the photoexcited electrons and holes will transfer to the FTO substrate and the photoanode surface, respectively, as driven by the internal electric field. This study demonstrated an alternative approach to the design of novel photoanodes with improved PEC performances, by engineering the electron density distribution and the band structure for efficient charge carrier separation.
Improved Water Oxidation of Fe 2 O 3 /Fe 2 TiO 5 Photoanode by Functionalizing with a Hydrophilic Organic Hole Storage Overlayer

Abstract:The integration of inorganic and organic materials has been demonstrated as an effective route for photoanodes to yield enhanced photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation performance. In this study, we report the preparation of an inorganic/organic composite photoanode by depositing 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid (HEDP) onto the surface of an Fe2O3/Fe2TiO5 heterostructure. It is found that the HEDP overlayer as an efficient and highly hydrophilic hole storage layer can effectively promote the surface charge dynamics by facilitating charge transfer and meanwhile by suppressing charge recombination. Consequently, the as-fabricated HEDP-Fe2O3/Fe2TiO5 photoanode exhibits an increased photocurrent density of 3.10 mA cm–2 at 1.23 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and a significant cathodic shift in the onset potential (∼120 mV). Furthermore, after the loading of FeNiOOH cocatalyst, a comparable photocurrent density of 3.40 mA cm–2 at 1.23 V versus RHE accompanied with a lowered onset potential are obtained. This work demonstrates an effective route to synthesize highly active hematite photoanodes via organic semiconductor integration.

Abstract:Cobalt-based metal-organic frameworks (Co-MOFs) are considered excellent cocatalysts for improving the photoelectrochemical performance of photoanodes. Considering the boundedness of monometallic MOFs, introducing a second metal is an efficient method to enhance the activity and stability of Co-MOFs. In this work, Cu doped Co-MOFs was successfully decorated on Ti–Fe 2 O 3 to prepare Ti–Fe 2 O 3 /CoCu-MOF. The photocurrent density of composite photoanode at 1.23 V vs. RHE reaches 2.06 mA/cm 2 , 5.5 times higher than that of Ti–Fe 2 O 3 , and the onset potential shifts 170 mV negatively. The results showed that CoCu-MOFs thin layer not only provided abundant active sites, but also effectively passivated the acceptor surface states of Ti–Fe 2 O 3 , thus inhibiting surface charge recombination. In addition, the introduction of Cu 2+ can induce the generation of higher valence Co species, which significantly promotes the transfer of holes from Ti–Fe 2 O 3 to the electrolyte. Our work demonstrates a new and promising photoelectrochemical cocatalyst, and provides a convenient method for the construction of other bimetallic MOFs materials.

Abstract:Hematite is an ideal photoanode candidate for its appropriate energy band position, small band gap and good stability. However, sluggish charge carriers transport process and severe recombination reaction caused by surface and interface flaws always leads to inferior photoelectrochemical performance. In this study, we synthesized a SnO 2 passivation layer with several-nanometer thickness on Fe 2 O 3 nanorod arrays by a facile sonochemical method. And such passivated Fe 2 O 3 was labeled as T-Fe 2 O 3 . After ultrasonic treatment, the surface chemical state of Fe 2 O 3 was availably adjusted by SnO 2 layer, the as-prepared T-Fe 2 O 3 photoanode exhibits a 28-fold increase in photocurrent density compared with pristine Fe 2 O 3 photoanode under simulated solar illumination. Based on systematic investigations, it is found that SnO 2 layer efficiently compensates the surface states on Fe 2 O 3 , prolonging charge carrier lifetime and promoting charge separation greatly. As a result, the remarkably improved photoelectrochemical water splitting performance of T-Fe 2 O 3 is attributed to unrestrained and fast hole transport way provided by SnO 2 mediated photoanode/electrolyte interface.

Abstract:This work reports a facile method for preparing highly photoactive α-Fe(2)O(3) films as well as their implementation as photoanodes for water oxidation. Transparent α-Fe(2)O(3) films were prepared by a new deposition-annealing (DA) process using nontoxic iron(III) chloride as the Fe precursor, followed by annealing at 550 °C in air. Ti-doped α-Fe(2)O(3) films were prepared by the same method, with titanium butoxide added as the Ti precursor. Impedance measurements show that the Ti-dopant serves as an electron donor and increases the donor density by 2 orders of magnitude. The photoelectrochemical performance of undoped and Ti-doped α-Fe(2)O(3) photoanodes was characterized and optimized through controlled variation of the Fe and Ti precursor concentration, annealing conditions, and the number of DA cycles. Compared to the undoped sample, the photocurrent onset potential of Ti-doped α-Fe(2)O(3) is shifted about 0.1-0.2 V to lower potential, thus improving the photocurrent and incident photon to current conversion efficiency (IPCE) at lower bias voltages. Significantly, the optimized Ti-doped α-Fe(2)O(3) film achieved the highest photocurrent density (1.83 mA/cm(2)) and IPCE values at 1.02 V vs RHE for α-Fe(2)O(3) photoanode. The enhanced photocurrent is attributed to the improved donor density and reduced electron-hole recombination at the time scale beyond a few picoseconds, as a result of Ti doping.
