Abstract:Recent development of aircraft-based,satellite-based,ship-based and vehicle-based tactical laser weapons shows the practical prospects of tactical laser weapons,although existing series of experiments could only beat targets like rockets,unmanned aerial vehicle and so on at short range.Key technologies of tactical laser weapons include high energy pulse or composite (cw and pulse together) solid laser technology,beam combination technology,etc.The development trend of laser weapons has made a transition from super high power strategic overawe to low power tactical application.The ship-based laser weapons are expected to be the first actual combat equipment;the development of space-based laser weapons is one of the important directions of laser weapon research because of their important strategic value,the ideal working condition in space without air and no need of high laser power.In the near future,laser weapons will be the subversive weapons that can change existing war forms.

Abstract:With the development of science and technology,the scope of future war expands into outer space gradually.The space-based anti-satellite kinetic missile with the advantages of high accuracy,strong anti-interference,good mobility,light weight and small size,becomes one of the most important space weapons.It is a new concept weapon that launches from satellites or other spacecrafts,hits enemy satellite directly with high relative velocity,and destroys it by large kinetic energy.It can be considered as an extension of ammunition technologies on the space-based platform.By tracking the development of this kind of missile abroad,its system composition and principle are studied,and related key technologies,including launch and separation,space autonomous navigation,target detection and identification,accurate terminal guidance,etc.,are presented and analyzed.Some research foundation is established for following study on the anti-satellite kinetic missile.

Abstract:Laser technology has observed a great advancement over the last few decades. This technology is used for a wide range of applications including medical sciences, military, industrial manufacturing, electronics, holography, spectroscopy, astronomy and much more. Military operations often demand a secure and timely transmission of a massive amount of information from one place to another. Until now, the military has relied on the radio spectrum for effective communication, which is vulnerable to security threats and susceptible to electromagnetic interference (EMI). Also, this spectrum is hard-pressed to meet the current bandwidth requirement for high-resolution images, on-air video conferencing and real-time data transfer. Therefore, the focus has shifted to visible and infrared spectrum using laser technology which is capable of providing secure data transfer because of its immunity to EMI. The probability of intercepting a laser signal is very low due to its narrow beam divergence and coherent optical beam, making the laser a suitable candidate for secure military tactical operations. Besides the communication aspect, the highly directive nature of a laser beam is also used as a directed energy laser weapon. These highly powerful and light weighted directed energy laser weapons are very cost-effective countermeasures for airborne threats. Furthermore, laser sensors are deployed in the battlefield or in space for tracking the path of a wide range of military vehicles like missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles, fighter aircraft, warships, submarines, and so on. Advancements in space operations and laser technology have offered synergistic possibilities of using lasers from space-based platforms during military operations. In this paper, we are providing our readers with a comprehensive study of laser applications, used by the military, to carry out tactical operations on the ground or space-based platforms. Also, an intensive investigation on the development of laser technology for sensors, range-finders and target designators that are used for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance is presented in the paper. The advancement of laser communication for military purposes and its current state of the art is reviewed as well as some recent scientific developments in the area of high-energy directed laser weapons are discussed, which have revolutionized military battlefields. Therefore, this manuscript highlights recent trends and engineering breakthroughs for the use of lasers in tactical operations.

Abstract:The United States must continue to push the major concentration of its missile defense tracking sensor architecture to space to improve the overall performance of the nation's Missile Defense System against an increasingly diverse missile threat. Without the ability to track the missile payload throughout the flight, especially hypersonic payloads, the ability of a missile defense system to intercept the payload diminishes significantly and the armed forces will be unable to engage and intercept the threat with any meaningful consistency. The country must overcome technological, acquisition, commercial, and policy challenges in order to deploy a space tracking layer and achieve what ultimately may be viewed as the greatest leap in capability that could be achieved in missile defense today. Current development and initial deployments efforts require continued funding and advocacy for satellite and ground system development as well as emphasis on the development of responsive launch capabilities.

Abstract:Over the last decade a large number of weapon systems have appeared that use blast as their primary damage mechanism. This is a notable trend; until recently very few warheads relied on blast as their primary output. Most warheads in service use explosives to drive metal such as fragments and shaped charge jets to engage targets. New technologies are now being integrated into warheads that claim to have enhanced blast performance. Blast weapons could have been designed to fill a gap in capability; they are generally used for the attack of 'soft' targets including personnel, both in the open and within protective structures. With the increased number and range of these weapons, it is likely that UK forces will have to face them in future conflicts. This paper briefly describes fuel-air explosive blast weapons and reviews a range of enhanced blast weapons that have been developed recently. The paper concludes with a brief discussion on the reasons why enhanced blast technologies may be proliferating and how this could affect the Defence Medical Services.

Abstract:Given the increasing tensions between world powers, missile defense is a topic that is more relevant than ever. However, information on the subject is often fragmented, confusing and untrustworthy. On the other hand, we believe that an informed overview of the current status is important for decision makers and citizens alike. A missile is essentially a guided rocket and therefore the term can be used to describe a very wide range of weapon systems. In this paper, we focus on long-range and intercontinental threats, which we believe are more important and problematic to defend against. We provide an overview of the two most common types of sensors, space-based infrared sensors and radars, and highlight their peculiarities and, most importantly, their drawbacks that severely limit their effectiveness.

Abstract:Since the beginning of the 1990s, the advent and success of US “cruise-missile diplomacy”1 has resulted in the emergence of cruise missiles as a coercive political tool and a versatile military weapon. During the initial phase of the last two decades, cruise missiles were predominantly deployed by a select group of advanced industrial countries, in particular the United States. However, the last decade had witnessed a new trend with emerging industrial countries showing increased propensity to develop cruise missiles. In addition to the effectiveness in carrying out all-weather precision strikes at standoff ranges, the rationale for acquiring cruise missiles is also driven due to the belief in the weapon systems’ ability to penetrate air defenses and the affordability in development and deployment.2

Abstract:The concepts,composition,applications and key techniques of space-based laser weapons are introduced in detail in this article. The destruction degree of laser on the target has been analyzed and the corresponding reference threshold is given. Some solutions to the key problems of the systems are put forward,including the development and variety of high-energy laser,the development technology of large aperture mirror and its structure,as well as affecting factors on system precision and methods of improving the accuracy about space-based target acquisition tracking and pointing( ATP). The research direction and basic theory are provided for the further development and improvement of the precision of the systems through the research of the development of space-based laser weapon systems.

Abstract:The use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or “drones” in military contexts has skyrocketed in the last two decades, with missions ranging from surveillance, reconnaissance, and intelligence to combat support. Technological advances have led to an increase in drone capabilities and reliability, on the one hand, and to a decrease of production costs, on the other hand. Furthermore, drone availability has also drastically increased, and equipment that was once the exclusive privilege of a few countries can now be obtained by all national armed forces – and, as evidenced by recent attacks, by non-official forces. In this context, drones can become part of any conflict, and military strategists have to include response to drones and to potential drone swarms in their operational scenarios. Therefore, defense against drones has to become a component of any full-fledged military strategy. This analysis explores the conceptual and operational changes for military forces triggered by the massive emergence of drones, including the theoretical and practical challenges related to training and implementing specific anti-drone units. First, the evolution of the threats related to drones and drone swarms is identified. We then summarize the different possible countermeasures. Finally, we propose practical solutions to deploy these countermeasures, notably by exploring the possibilities of development and deployment of specialized anti-drone units and examining some of the challenges associated with fighting high-tech unmanned enemies rather than fighting soldiers in conventional battlefields.

Abstract:This chapter delves much deeper into three areas — nuclear weapons, space and satellites, and missile defense. It argues that these are among the subjects in military technology that are both simple enough to be accessible to the generalist, and important and enduring enough that they can be expected to remain relevant for policymakers well into the future. The chapter also discusses the significance of space and its purposes for military activities, noting the basic principles of the national security space subject are grounded in immutable principles of physics. It examines the approach used in the study which suggests a methodology for diving deeper into other key areas of defense technology. Ultimately, the chapter contends that constructing adequate defenses, stable military balances of power, and robust means of national protection is fated to be a very difficult undertaking. To put it bluntly, two opposing countries or blocs of nations with roughly comparable military capabilities are generally not inherently safe from each other.

Abstract:The emergence of Lethal Autonomous Weapon Systems (LAWS) offers a comparatively low adoption-cost strategy to emerging great powers that would allow them to offset the conventional military advantage enjoyed by their rivals, which threatens the established global balance of power. This article critically analyses the role of China and the United States in the development of the "hardware" and "software" components of LAWS, concluding that, while the demonstration point has not yet been reached, the incubation of this emerging revolution in military affairs has already begun to have a geopolitical impact.

Abstract:Abstract In modern warfare, precision guided munitions have become one of the major equipment to attack and hit the enemy’s crucial value targets. In addition, they are the critical targets of the missile defense and anti-aircraft interceptor system of varying countries during interception and destruction, and the world has increased investment in missile defense. Therefore, the penetration and countermeasures capacities of missiles holds the key to the victory, and the stealth technology of tactical missiles provides a vital orientation for the future advancement of weapons and equipment technology. Based on the current military requirements, this paper summarizes the application of stealth technology in varying tactical missiles and analyzes the development trend of such technology in the future, which is expected to have great implications for further research and application of both stealth and anti-stealth technology.
