Abstract:The whole evolution of the incident shock propagation in a convergent shock tube with small angle is studied in detail by using the direct numerical simulation. Specifically, the shape of the curved shock and the unsteady flow patterns which differs from the K-H instability, have been evaluated. The results show that as a disturbance of the inclined wall on the shock, the bending position of the incident shock represents periodically changed and its non-dimensional wavelength is larger when the convergent angle becomes greater, indicating a faster response to the curvature variation. At the same time, two different flow instable patterns for the shock propagation in the area reduction channel are discovered, one of which is the asymmetric shock bifurcations when the reflected shock from the collision of the right wall interacts with the boundary layer. This instability is closely related to the unsteady vortex shedding behind the bifurcated feet, resulting in the dramatic pressure fluctuation. Another pattern occurs when the reflected shocks generated by the curved incident shock impinge on the upper and lower walls. The collision position moves at a modest speed, which causes the formation of small vortices near the reflection regions. Abstract:A comprehensive understanding of shock formation and propagation in shock tubes is crucial for their diverse applications. The shock velocity in single-diaphragm shock tubes, characterized by initial acceleration and subsequent attenuation due to viscous effects, has been extensively investigated. However, limited studies exist on the double-diaphragm mode of operation. In this study, shock tube experiments were conducted using helium at pressures of 10–60 bar as driver gas and argon at pressures of 100–600 Torr as driven gas. The shock velocity profiles in the double-diaphragm mode show a sequence of acceleration and deceleration stages of the shock front, strongly influenced by the driver-to-driven pressure ratios (P41) and the pressure in the intermediate section (Pmid). Particularly, at high values of P41, peak shock velocities can exceed those measured near the end wall by about 12%. Large axial temperature gradients arise in the driven gas due to the accelerating and decelerating shock. Selecting appropriate diaphragms to maintain the intermediate section's pressure close to the value of the driver pressure can reduce peak shock velocities and post-shock temperatures. An in-house one-dimensional (1D) weighted essentially non-oscillatory scheme-based code was utilized to analyze wave interactions in the shock formation region, revealing that the post-shock gas behind the secondary diaphragm and inhibition of the primary diaphragm's opening and subsequent reopening can lead to unique shock profiles in double-diaphragm shock tubes. These insights deepen our understanding of wave propagation in shock tubes and suggest ways to mitigate undesirable effects in double-diaphragm shock tubes.

Abstract:A new manually operated pressure driven shock tube is proposed and demonstrated. Shock wave-associated parameters like velocity, Mach number, pressure, and temperature are computed using acoustic method. Experiment involves manually loading train of pressure pulses into a driver tube using a bicycle pump. The high pressure buildup in driver tube ruptures the diaphragm at critical pressure and generates a propagating shock wave in the driven section coupled with sensor section in which a couple of microphones are separated by a fixed distance. The propagating shock wave acoustical profile is recorded and its arrival time lag is measured using sound recording software. In a conventional method, piezo-electric pressure sensors are utilized to measure both pressure and time lag of shock wave between the sensors. In the proposed method, microphones are utilized to measure time lag of shock wave with sampling frequency of 768 KHz using computer supporting audio software. Utilizing time data, the said shock wave parameters are evaluated and reported. The performance of the proposed shock tube is compared with manually operated piston-driven Reddy tube.
A review of diaphragmless shock tubes for interdisciplinary applications

Abstract:Shock tubes have emerged as an effective tool for applications in various fields of research and technology. The conventional mode of shock tube operation employs a frangible diaphragm to generate shockwaves. The last half-century has witnessed significant efforts to replace this diaphragm-bursting method with fast-acting valves. These diaphragmless methods have good repeatability, quick turnaround time between experiments, and produce a clean flow, free of diaphragm fragments in contrast to the conventional diaphragm-type operation. The constantly evolving valve designs are targeting shorter opening times for improved performance and efficiency. The present review is a compilation of the different diaphragmless shock tubes that have been conceptualized, developed, and implemented for various research endeavors. The discussions focus on essential factors, including the type of actuation mechanism, driver-driven configurations, valve opening time, shock formation distance, and operating pressure range, that ultimately influence the shockwave parameters obtained in the shock tube. A generalized mathematical model to study the behavior of these valves is developed. The advantages, limitations, and challenges in improving the performance of the valves are described. Finally, the present-day applications of diaphragmless shock tubes have been discussed, and their potential scope in expanding the frontiers of shockwave research and technology are presented.

Abstract:Shockwave processes in a shock tube equipped with a high-speed low-inertia electromagnetic pneumatic valve are experimentally investigated. Graphs of the pressure sensor signals in the shock tube channel are given. The dependence of the valve opening time on the pressure in the high and low gas density chambers is shown. A physical simulation of the valve operation at the initial moments of its opening with the formation of a shock wave is carried out.

Abstract:Recently, micro shock tubes have been widely used in various fields such as aerospace, combustion and medical science. Needle-free drug delivery device is a typical example of the application of the micro shock tube used in the field of medical science. Compared to the macro shock tube, the flow viscosity and micro scale effects considerably influence the shock wave propagation in the micro shock tube, which makes shock wave behaviors significant difference from the theoretical prediction. Boundary layers which develop behind the moving shock wave attenuate the shock wave propagation as well. Additionally, the gas-particle flows are also shown the different characteristics compared to the single gas flow in the micro shock tube. Particles are induced by the shock wave inside the micro shock tube and accelerated in the supersonic nozzle. Supersonic flows and particle velocity make experimental studies difficult to be performed in the micro shock tube. Even though micro shock tubes have been studied for decades, shock flow characteristics and particle dynamics inside the micro shock tube are not well known to date. For the present study, pressure measurements and optical visualization have been carried out in a micro shock tube. Static pressure measurements were used for investigating the shock wave propagation in the driven section, and Pitot pressure measurements were used for obtaining flow characteristics at the exit of nozzles. Two high sensitive pressure transducers were used for recording pressure changes as the shock wave moved through pressure transducers and the shock Mach number was calculated. Particle tracking velocimetry was conducted to analyze particle-gas two-phase flows. Particle distribution and velocity were obtained in the present experiment study.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Widths of shocks are compared, under liquid and solid conditions, for a two-dimensional layer of charged microspheres levitated in a plasma. In this strongly coupled dusty plasma, a shock was launched as a blast wave by moving an exciter wire at a supersonic speed and then bringing it to a halt. Runs were repeated with the layer of microspheres prepared two ways: a crystalline-like solid, and a liquid. The liquid was sustained using laser heating, with conditions that were otherwise the same as in the solid. The shock width was found to be less in a liquid than in a solid, where it was 4 to 6 lattice constants. These measurements were based on the high-gradient region of density profiles. The profiles were obtained from particle coordinates, measured by high-speed video imaging. The spatial resolution was improved by combining particle coordinates, in the shock's frame of reference, from a sequence of images.

Predicting Non-Ideal Effects from the Diaphragm Opening Process in Shock Tubes

Abstract:Shock tubes are instrumental in studying high-temperature kinetics and simulating high-speed flows. They swiftly elevate the thermodynamic conditions of test gases, making them ideal for examining rapid chemical reactions and generating high-enthalpy flows for aerodynamic research. However, non-ideal effects, stemming from factors like diaphragm opening processes and viscous effects, can significantly influence thermodynamic conditions behind the shock wave. This study investigates the impact of various diaphragm opening patterns on the shock parameters near the driven section end-wall. Experiments were conducted using helium and argon as driver and driven gases, respectively, at pressures ranging from 1.32 to 2.09 bar and temperatures from 1073 to 2126 K behind the reflected shock. High-speed imaging captured different diaphragm rupture profiles, classified into four distinct types based on their dynamics. Results indicate that the initial stages of diaphragm opening, including the rate and profile of opening, play crucial roles in resulting incident shock Mach number and test time. A sigmoid function was employed to fit the diaphragm opening profiles, allowing for accurate categorization and analysis. New correlations were developed to predict the incident shock attenuation rate and post-shock pressure rise, incorporating parameters such as diaphragm opening time, rupture profile constants, and normalized experimental Mach number. The results emphasize the importance of considering diaphragm rupture dynamics in shock tube experiments to achieve accurate predictions of shock parameters.

Internal Shocks Hydrodynamics: the Collision of Two Cold Shells in Detail

Abstract:Emission in many astrophysical transients originates from a shocked fluid. A central engine typically produces an outflow with varying speeds, leading to internal collisions within the outflow at finite distances from the source. Each such collision produces a pair of forward and reverse shocks with the two shocked regions separated by a contact discontinuity (CD). As a useful approximation, we consider the head-on collision between two cold and uniform shells (a slower leading shell and a faster trailing shell) of finite radial width, and study the dynamics of shock propagation in planar geometry. We find significant differences between the forward and reverse shocks, in terms of their strength, internal energy production efficiency, and the time it takes for the shocks to sweep through the respective shells. We consider the subsequent propagation of rarefaction waves in the shocked regions and explore the cases where these waves can catch up with the shock fronts and thereby limit the internal energy dissipation. We demonstrate the importance of energy transfer from the trailing to leading shell through $pdV$ work across the CD. We outline the parameter space regions relevant for models of different transients,e.g., Gamma-ray burst (GRB) internal shock model, fast radio burst (FRB) blastwave model, Giant flare due to magnetars, and superluminous supernovae (SLSN) ejecta. We find that the reverse shock likely dominates the internal energy production for many astrophysical transients.

Numerical simulation of primary-secondary shock wave propagation in tube with varing cross-section

Abstract:Numerical simulation has been conducted on the propagation of the explosion wave on the primary-secondary basis in an axisymmetric tube with varying cross section,using the MUSCL with second-order precision,the non-structural,self-adaptable mesh technique,and the finite volume form.The results show that the shock wave flow field is uniform and steady with good waveform when the explosion wave on the primary-secondary basis runs into the target region.Desired overpressure and duration of the shock wave could be obtained if the explosive energy of the driver section is properly increased.

Abstract:Detonation of a high-explosive produces shock-blast wave, shrapnel, and gaseous products. While direct exposure to blast is a concern near the epicenter, shock-blast can affect subjects, even at farther distances. When a pure shock-blast wave encounters the subject, in the absence of shrapnels, fall, or gaseous products the loading is termed as primary blast loading and is the subject of this paper. The wave profile is characterized by blast overpressure, positive time duration, and impulse and called herein as shock-blast wave parameters (SWPs). These parameters in turn are uniquely determined by the strength of high explosive and the distance of the human subjects from the epicenter. The shape and magnitude of the profile determine the severity of injury to the subjects. As shown in some of our recent works (1-3), the profile not only determines the survival of the subjects (e.g., animals) but also the acute and chronic biomechanical injuries along with the following bio-chemical sequelae. It is extremely important to carefully design and operate the shock tube to produce field-relevant SWPs. Furthermore, it is vital to identify and eliminate the artifacts that are inadvertently introduced in the shock-blast profile that may affect the results. In this work, we examine the relationship between shock tube adjustable parameters (SAPs) and SWPs that can be used to control the blast profile; the results can be easily applied to many of the laboratory shock tubes. Further, replication of shock profile (magnitude and shape) can be related to field explosions and can be a standard in comparing results across different laboratories. Forty experiments are carried out by judiciously varying SAPs such as membrane thickness, breech length (66.68-1209.68 mm), measurement location, and type of driver gas (nitrogen, helium). The effects SAPs have on the resulting shock-blast profiles are shown. Also, the shock-blast profiles of a TNT explosion from ConWep software is compared with the profiles obtained from the shock tube. To conclude, our experimental results demonstrate that a compressed-gas shock tube when designed and operated carefully can replicate the blast time profiles of field explosions accurately. Such a faithful replication is an essential first step when studying the effects of blast induced neurotrauma using animal models.

Abstract:The prevalence of blast-induced traumatic brain injury in conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan has motivated laboratory scale experiments on biomedical effects of blast waves and studies of blast wave transmission properties of various materials in hopes of improving armor design to mitigate these injuries. This paper describes the design and performance of a table-top shock tube that is more convenient and widely accessible than traditional compression driven and blast driven shock tubes. The design is simple: it is an explosive driven shock tube employing a rifle primer which explodes when impacted by the firing pin. The firearm barrel acts as the shock tube, and the shock wave emerges from the muzzle. The small size of this shock tube can facilitate localized application of a blast wave to a subject, tissue, or material under test.

Abstract:A shock tube facility for generating a cylindrical converging shock wave is developed in this work. Based on the shock dynamics theory, a specific wall profile is designed for the test section of the shock tube to transfer a planar shock into a cylindrical one. The shock front in the converging part obtained from experiment presents a perfect circular shape, which proves the feasibility and reliability of the method. The time variations of the shock strength obtained from numerical simulation, experiment, and theoretical estimation show the desired converging effect in the shock tube test section. Particular emphasis is then placed on the problem of shock-interface interaction induced by cylindrical converging shock waves. For this purpose, membrane-less gas cylinder is adopted to form the interface between two different fluids while the laser sheet technique to visualize the flow field. The result shows that it is convenient to perform such experiments in this facility.

Abstract:This is a numerical and experimental study on shock attenuation in shock tubes. Tube geometry, boundary layer, and reduction in cross-sectional area induced by burst diaphragms are often considered the main causes of shock speed reduction (or shock attenuation) observed during the experiments. In order to distinguish how each single phenomenon contributes toward shock attenuation, the National Cheng Kung University shock tube is simulated for driver and test (driver–test) gas pairs involving air–air and He–air. For low pressure ratios, the diaphragm effect was found to be negligible. For a pressure ratio of 200 and helium as driver gas, the shock speed was found to decrease linearly with the size of the diaphragm orifice. In general, wall viscous effects caused a 2.5% decrease in shock speed, while an additional 7% reduction was caused by the presence of the diaphragm. The gradual opening of the diaphragm mainly contributed to a decrease in shock oscillations.

Abstract:This study evaluates the performance of a new shock tube facility used to produce blast loading in controlled laboratory environments. The facility was found to generate a planar shock wave over the tube cross section by measuring the pressure distribution on a massive steel plate located at the end of the tube. The properties of the shock wave proved to be a function of driver length and driver pressure, and the positive phase of the measured pressure–time histories was similar to those generated from actual far-field explosive detonations. However, the shock tube is also suited to investigate fluid–structure interaction effects and the behaviour of materials in blast events. This was demonstrated using a three-dimensional digital image correlation technique to measure the deformation field of thin steel plates. Synchronization of the three-dimensional digital image correlation and pressure measurements enabled a thorough investigation of the entire experiment and identification of fluid–structure interaction effects. Finally, one-dimensional numerical simulations were performed to investigate the wave patterns during the experiments.
Insights into Spatio-temporal dynamics during shock -- droplet flame interaction

Abstract:The study comprehensively investigates the response of a combusting droplet during its interaction with a high-speed transient flow that is imposed by a coaxially propagating blast wave. The blast wave is generated using a specially designed unique miniature shock generation apparatus that generates blast waves using the wire-explosion technique which facilitates a wide range of shock Mach number (1.03 < Ms < 1.8). The experiments are performed in two configurations: Open field blast wave and focused blast wave. The charging voltage and the configuration determine the shock Mach number (Ms) and flow characteristics. The flame is found to exhibit two major response patterns: partial extinction followed by re-ignition and full extinction. Simultaneously, the droplet also interacts with the flow imposed by the blast wave exhibiting different modes of response ranging from pure deformation, Rayleigh-Taylor piercing bag breakup, and shear-induced stripping. The KH instability is exhibited along the windward side interface of the droplet during the interaction with the blast wave decay profile which gets aggravated when the induced flow interaction ensues. Increasing the Mach number (Ms > 1.1) makes the droplet flame more vulnerable to extinction. However, the flame exhibits stretching and shedding, followed by re-ignition at lower Mach numbers (Ms < 1.06). In all cases, the flame base lifts off in response to the imposed flow, and the advection of the flame base interacting with the flame tip results in flame extinction. The entire interaction occurs in two stages: 1) interaction with the blast wave and the decaying velocity profile associated with it, and 2) interaction with the induced flow behind the blast wave as a result of the entrainment (delayed response). The criteria for partial and complete extinction of flame have been postulated which is in good agreement with the experiments.

Abstract:An experimental study of shock wave propagation and its influence on the spontaneous ignition during high-pressure hydrogen release through a tube are measured by pressure transducers and light sensors. Results show that the pressure behind a shock wave first increases, and subsequently remains near constant value with an increase of the propagation distance. That is, a certain propagation distance is required to form a stable shock wave in the tube. In the front of the tube, the minimum value of pressure behind the shock wave (Pshock) required for spontaneous ignition decreases with the increase in axial distance to the diaphragm. However, the minimum Pshock remains nearly a constant value in the rear part of the tube. Moreover, the critical values of shock Mach number (MS) for spontaneous ignition decrease with the increase in tube length. And the ignition delay time decreases with the increase of the MS. As the ignition kernel grows in size to a flame, it propagates downstream along the tube with velocity greater than the theoretical flow velocity of the hydrogen-air contact surface. The flame propagation velocity relative to tube wall increases with MS. When the self-sustained flame exits from the tube, a rapid non-premixed turbulent combustion is observed in the chamber. The combustion-wave overpressure increases with the increase of the MS.

Abstract:Shock tubes can carry out dynamic mechanical impact tests on civil engineering structures. The current shock tubes mostly use an explosion with aggregate charge to obtain shock waves. Limited effort has been made to study the overpressure field in shock tubes with multi-point initiation. In this paper, the overpressure fields in a shock tube under the conditions of single-point initiation, multi-point simultaneous initiation, and multi-point delayed initiation have been analyzed by combining experiments and numerical simulations. The numerical results match well with the experimental data, which indicates that the computational model and method used can accurately simulate the blast flow field in a shock tube. For the same charge mass, the peak overpressure at the exit of the shock tube with the multi-point simultaneous initiation is smaller than that with single-point initiation. As the shock waves are focused on the wall, the maximum overpressure on the wall of the explosion chamber near the explosion zone is not reduced. The maximum overpressure on the wall of the explosion chamber can be effectively reduced by a six-point delayed initiation. When the interval time is less than 10 ms, the peak overpressure at the nozzle outlet decreases linearly with the interval of the explosion. When the interval time is greater than 10 ms, the overpressure peak remains unchanged.

Abstract:A shock-tube facility capable of generating a planar shock with the Mach number higher than 3.0 is developed for studying Richtmyer-Meshkov instability induced by a strong shock wave (referred to as strong-shock RMI). Shock enhancement is realized through the convergence of shock within a channel with the profile determined by using shock dynamics theory. The facility is designed considering the repeatability of shock generation, transition of shock profile, and effects of viscosity and flow choking. By measuring the dynamic pressure of the tube flow using pressure sensors and capturing the shock movement through the high-speed shadowing technique, the reliability and repeatability of the shock tube for generating a strong planar shock are first verified. Particular emphasis is then placed on the ability of the facility to study strong-shock RMI, for which a thin polyester film is adopted to form the initial interface separating gases of different densities. The results indicate that the shock tube is reliable for conducting strong-shock RMI experiments.

Shock Waves

Abstract:We describe a numerical modelling technique used to simulate the gas flow in the complete X2 facility in non-reflected shock tube mode. The technique uses a one-dimensional model to simulate piston dynamics and diaphragm rupture and couples this to an axisymmetric simulation of the shock tube which captures viscous and finite-rate chemistry effects. This technique is used to simulate a nonequilibrium radiation condition relevant to a Titan atmospheric manoeuvre. The condition is a 7,km/s shock propagating into a N2/CH4 mixture at 80,Pa. The results show that the shock remains relatively planar at the exit of the shock tube such that there should be little difficulty for the optics. In terms of modelling, the finite-rate chemistry gas performs better than the equilibrium gas for these flows with regards to flow property estimates.
