Abstract:Rational nanostructure design has been a promising route to address critical materials issues for enabling next-generation high capacity lithium ion batteries for portable electronics, vehicle electrification, and grid-scale storage. However, synthesis of functional nanostructures often involves expensive starting materials and elaborate processing, both of which present a challenge for successful implementation in low-cost applications. In seeking a sustainable and cost-effective route to prepare nanostructured battery electrode materials, we are inspired by the diversity of natural materials. Here, we show that crab shells with the unique Bouligand structure consisting of highly mineralized chitin-protein fibers can be used as biotemplates to fabricate hollow carbon nanofibers; these fibers can then be used to encapsulate sulfur and silicon to form cathodes and anodes for Li-ion batteries. The resulting nanostructured electrodes show high specific capacities (1230 mAh/g for sulfur and 3060 mAh/g for silicon) and excellent cycling performance (up to 200 cycles with 60% and 95% capacity retention, respectively). Since crab shells are readily available due to the 0.5 million tons produced annually as a byproduct of crab consumption, their use as a sustainable and low-cost nanotemplate represents an exciting direction for nanostructured battery materials.

Abstract:Porous structure design is generally considered to be a reliable strategy to boost ion transport and provide active sites for disordered carbon anodes of Na‐ion batteries (NIBs). Herein, a type of waste cork‐derived hard carbon material (CC) is reported for efficient Na storage via tuning the pore species. Benefiting from the natural holey texture of this renewable precursor, CCs deliver a novel hierarchical porous structure. The effective skeletal density test combined with small angle X‐ray scattering analysis (SAXS) is used to obtain the closed pore information. Based on a detailed correlation analysis between pore information and the electrochemical performance of CCs, improving pyrolysis temperature to reduce open pores (related to initial capacity loss) and increase closed pores (related to plateau capacity) endows an optimal CC with a high specific capacity of ≈360 mAh g−1 in half‐cells and a high energy density of 230 Wh kg−1 in full‐cells with a capacity retention of 71% after 2000 cycles at 2C rate. The bioinspired high temperature pore‐closing strategy and the new insights about the pore structure–performance relationship provide a rational guide for designing porous carbon anode of NIBs with tailored pore species and high Na storage capacity.

Abstract:Carbon -based materials have become the most commonly used electrode materials for supercapacitors due to their simple production and low preparation cost. The preparation of hierarchical porous carbon materials with excellent properties using biomass materials is a very valuable study. Therefore, we used crab shells as carbon precursors to prepare crab shell -based carbon materials by using the self-templating method (CaCO3) combined with low -temperature eutectic molten salt. When the composition of the eutectic salt was CaCl2/KCl (molar ratio of 43:57) and the mass ratio of crab shells to eutectic salt was 1:5, the prepared crab -shell -based carbon material (CC-CaK-5) exhibited excellent physical and electrochemical properties with high specific surface area (1193.7 m2g- 1), rich heteroatom doping (O (7.83 %) and N (6.71 %)), and high specific capacitance (290 Fg- 1 at 0.5 Ag-1).The CC-CaK-5//CC-CaK-5 devices assembled with CC-CaK-5 as the electrode material exhibited excellent electrochemical performance. At a current density of 1 Ag-1 , the capacitance value of the device remained at 93.11 % of the initial capacitance value after 5000 cycles. The energy density reached 6.95 Whkg-1 at a power density of 302.09 Wkg-1 and remained at 4.71 Whkg-1 at a power density of 13,037.54 Wkg- 1.

Abstract:Although it has been proven that porous, heteroatomic, and defective structures improve Na storage performance, they also severely affect the initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) due to the huge irreversible capacity in the first cycle, which always limits the practical application of carbon anodes in commercial Na-ion batteries (NIBs). Here, we show the successful synthesis of nanocrystalline cellulose and the derivative hard carbons. A series of treatments including acid hydrolysis, hydrothermal carbonization, and high-temperature pyrolysis help tune the pores, heteroatoms, and defects to achieve an optimized balance between superior ICE and reversible capacity of up to 90.4% and 314 mAh g(-1). This study highlights that tailoring the electrode microstructure could be an important strategy in the future design of carbonaceous anode materials for high-performance Na-ion batteries.

Abstract:Si is a promising high-capacity anode material; however, its practical implementation is hindered by its huge volume expansion, low initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE), poor cycling life, and high cost. To address these issues, a novel microscale Si skeleton (MSS) material is synthesized, and a dual carbon-hybridized MSS hierarchical architecture composite (MSS@CC@CS) is fabricated by a conformal carbon first coating and nonfilling carbon shell secondary encapsulation. The MSS consisting of interconnected Si nanoskeletons and continuous interpenetrating pores avoids pulverization and accommodates volume expansion, resulting in low electrode swelling. The conformal carbon coating enhances the internal conductivity and structural stability of MSS, and the carbon shell encapsulation further strengthens the structural integrity and greatly improves the ICE of the Si anode. As an anode, MSS@CC@CS shows a high ICE of 90.5%, a high half-cell capacity of 1353.8 mA h g(-1) at 0.5 C with 89.8% capacity retention after 800 cycles, and a low electrode swelling of 12.4%. Paired with a commercial NCA cathode after blending graphite to assemble a 3.5 A h cylindrical cell, an energy density of 286.4 W h kg(-1) and superior cycle performance with 82.7% capacity retention after 1200 cycles are achieved, showing a great application potential in powering large devices.

Abstract:Currently, the specific capacity and cycling performance of various MoS2/carbon-based anode materials for Na-ion storage are far from satisfactory due to the insufficient structural stability of the electrode, incomplete protection of MoS2 by carbon, difficult access of electrolyte to the electrode interior, as well as inactivity of the adopted carbon matrix. To address these issues, this work presents the rational design and synthesis of 3D interconnected and hollow nanocables composed of multiwalled carbon@MoS2@carbon. In this architecture, (i) the 3D nanoweb-like structure brings about excellent mechanical property of the electrode, (ii) the ultrathin MoS2 nanosheets are sandwiched between and doubly protected by two layers of porous carbon, (iii) the hollow structure of the primary nanofibers facilitates the access of electrolyte to the electrode interior, (iv) the porous and nitrogen-doping properties of the two carbon materials lead to synergistic Na-storage of carbon and MoS2. As a result, this hybrid material as the anode material of Na-ion battery exhibits fast chargetransfer reaction, high utilization efficiency, and ultrastability. Outstanding reversible capacity (1045 mAh g(-1)), excellent rate behavior (817 mAh g(-1) at 7000 mA g(-1)), and good cycling performance (747 mAh g(-1) after 200 cycles at 700 mA g(-1)) are obtained.
A porous biomass-derived anode for high-performance sodium-ion batteries

Abstract:Although hard carbons have been turned out to be suitable for sodium storage, their high cost and low initial coulombic efficiency (ICE) need to be addressed for the commercial application. Here, we report an effective route including a pyrolysis process and a reductive strategy to synthesize high-performance hard carbons from waste apricot shell. The obtained hard carbons inherit the unique architecture of the apricot shell, delivering a large interlayer spacing and a well-connected structure, which are beneficial for the Na+ intercalation and transport. The anode performance is further enhanced by H2 reduction treatment, which efficiently reduces the defects and thus improves the ICE. The final prepared hard carbons exhibit a promising anode performance with a desirable reversible capacity of ca. 400 mAhg−1, an improved ICE of 79% and an excellent cycling stability. This study should contribute to the better utilization of the biomass waste for the future large-scale application of sodium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Using biowastes as precursors for the preparation of value-added nanomaterials is critical to the sustainable development of devices. Lignosulphonates are the by-products of pulp and paper-making industries and usually discarded as wastes. In the present study, lignosulphonate is used as the precursor to prepare hierarchical ordered porous carbon with interconnected pores for the electrochemical energy storage application. The unique molecular structure and properties of lignosulphonate ensure the acquisition of high-quality porous carbon with a controllable pore structure and improved physical properties. As a result, the as-prepared hierarchical order porous carbon show excellent energy storage performance when used to assemble the symmetric supercapacitor, which exhibits high-specific capacitance of 289 F g−1 at a current density of 0.5 A g−1, with the energy density of 40 Wh kg−1 at the power density of 900 W kg−1. The present study provides a promising strategy for the fabrication of high-performance energy storage devices at low cost.

Abstract:A green and sustainable approach was employed to synthesize N, O-codoped porous carbon nanorods with two-end-open characteristics. In this method, a crab shell was utilized as a template and activator, while egg white served as a carbon precursor. The resulting carbon nanorods sintered at 700 °C (CNRs-700), exhibited cross-linked pore channels, a high surface area, and abundant defects and active sites. These features imparted superior energy storage properties to the material, enabling its application as both an anode for lithium-ion batteries and a supercapacitor. The CNRs-700 demonstrated an exceptional lithium storage capacity of 530.6 mAh g −1 at 2 A g −1 , corresponding to 90.1% of the capacity achieved at 100 mA g −1 , which is ascribed to the pseudocapacitive contribution. Furthermore, in an evaluation combining a three-electrode configuration in KOH electrolyte at a high current density of 50 A g −1 , the CNRs-700 retained a specific capacitance of 140 F g −1 . For symmetrical supercapacitors based on CNRs-700 in 1 M Na 2 SO 4 electrolyte, the energy density reached 27.1 Wh kg −1 at a 375 W kg −1 power density, demonstrating remarkable cyclability over 10,000 consecutive cycles. The superior rate performance and cycling stability would accentuate the suitability of the biomass-derived carbon materials for such systems.

Abstract:Hollow nanoporous carbon architectures (HNCs) present significant utilitarian value for a wide variety of applications. Facile and efficient preparation of HNCs has long been pursued but still remains challenging. Herein, we for the first time demonstrate that single-component metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) crystals, rather than the widely reported hybrid ones which necessitate tedious operations for preparation, could enable the facile and versatile syntheses of functional HNCs. By controlling the growth kinetics, the MOFs crystals (STU-1) are readily engineered into different shapes with designated styles of crystalline inhomogeneity. A subsequent one-step pyrolysis of these MOFs with intraparticle difference can induce a simultaneous self-hollowing and carbonization process, thereby producing various functional HNCs including yolk-shell polyhedrons, hollow microspheres, mesoporous architectures, and superstructures. Superior to the existing methods, this synthetic strategy relies only on the complex nature of single-component MOFs crystals without involving any other constituents and tedious operations, making it convenient, efficient, and easy to scale up. An ultra-stable Na-ion battery anode is demonstrated by the HNCs with extraordinary cyclability (93% capacity retention over 8000 cycles), highlighting a high level of functionality of the HNCs.

Abstract:Hard carbon attracts great attention as an anode material for sodium‐ion battery, owing to its high conductivity and environmental benignity. However, the practical applications of hard carbon anodes are largely limited by the poor cycling stability and high cost. Herein, bagasse, one of the most abundant biological wastes, is used as carbon source to construct hard carbon anode by high‐temperature thermal decomposition. This special material with moderate surface area exhibits long‐term cycling stability (91.5% retention upon 800 cycles at 1000 mA g−1). Remarkably, the full battery delivers high midpoint voltage with 2.9 V and superior initial Coulombic efficiency with 93.1% as well as excellent cycling stability (61% retention upon 300 cycles at 125 mA g−1). Abstract:Despite graphite has been commercialized in the lithium ion batteries, further exploration of biomass-derived carbon-based anode materials with high specific capacity and rate performance is necessary owning to their natural abundance and low-cost production. Heteroatoms-doped, hierarchical porous, high disordered, and two-end-open carbon nanorods with interconnected networks were fabricated via a green, sustained route using crab shell as both the biological template and activation reagent and honey as biomass carbon precursor. The hierarchical porous structure with heteroatoms-doping leads to a high surface area of 502.5 m2 g−1, sufficient defects/active sites, and the convenient access of ions to the electrochemically active surface. This elaborated architecture provides a fast ion/electron transfer pathway, demonstrating high pseudocapacitive charge storage behavior. As a result, the hierarchical porous carbon nanorod electrode delivers outstanding rate performance (374.1 mAh g−1 at 5.0 A g−1) and remarkable cycling stability (623.3 mAh g−1 at 1.0 A g−1 after 500 cycles), which may have the great potential of HPCRs as a sustainable high-rate carbon anode material for LIBs.

Abstract:Mesoporous carbons with large uniform pore sizes and high surface areas are of great interest due to their potential applications in electrochemical double layer capacitors (EDLCs), hydrogen storage, separation and catalysis. Here, we report a facile synthesis approach to highly ordered mesoporous carbon nanofiber arrays (MCNAs) by combining surfactant-templating self-assembly of organic resols with a natural crab shell hard-templating process. The obtained materials consist of a mesoporous carbon nanofiber (70 nm in mean diameter and 11 nm in mesopore), an interspacing void of 70 nm between nanofibers, and 1 micrometre of pores between nanofiber arrays. The unique structure (ordered mesopores, macroporous voids and partially graphitic framework) provides a more favorable path for electrolyte penetration and transportation, good electronic conductivity, as well as possess a large specific surface area (1270 m(2) g(-1)) and more vacancies or defects in a graphite plane, which facilitate uniform distribution of metal nanoparticles and a synergistic effect between the nanoparticles and MCNAs, and give rise to promising electrocatalytic activity as a supporting medium for Pt in direct methanol fuel cells. The resultant materials also have excellent capacitive performance for supercapacitor application.

Abstract:Transformation of biomass wastes into sustainable low cost carbon materials is now a topic of great interest. Here, we describe porous carbon from biomass derived waste shrimp shells and its application in two different energy storage systems. The unique porous structure with the presence of heteroatoms (O, N) makes it promising material for both lithium ion batteries and supercapacitors. When applied as anode materials for lithium ion batteries, the as-prepared carbon showed a specific capacity as high as 1507 mA h g(-1) and 1014 mA h g(-1) at current densities of 0.1 A g(-1) and 0.5 A g(-1), respectively, good rate performance and superior cycling stability. The porous carbon-based supercapacitor also delivered a specific capacitance of 239 F g(-1) at a current density of 0.5 A g(-1) in 6 M KOH electrolyte. The specific capacitance retention is 99.4% even after 5000 charge-discharge cycles, indicating excellent cycling stability. The superior electrochemical performances for both lithium ion batteries and supercapacitors could be ascribed to the high specific surface area, porous structure and nitrogen doping effect. Coralline-Like N-Doped Hierarchically Porous Carbon Derived from Enteromorpha as a Host Matrix for Lithium-Sulfur Battery

Abstract:Coralline-like N-doped hierarchically porous carbon (CNHPC) was prepared through a hydrothermal carbonization process using a sea pollutant enteromorpha as the starting material. The addition of a small amount of glucose during carbonization improved the yield of carbon, and the inherent N contents, especially for pyrrolic N and pyridinic N atoms. After loading 40 wt. % sulfur, the CNHPC/S composite, as a cathode in a Li-S battery, exhibited an initial discharge capacity of 1617 mAh g-1 (96.5 % of theoretical capacity) at 0.1 C and a capacity loss of 0.05 % per charge-discharge cycle after 500 cycles at 0.5 C with a stable Coulombic efficiency of 100 % in carbonate based electrolyte. Such a great performance can be attributed to the coralline-like hierarchically porous infrastructure and inherently abundant N doping. Given the conversion of waste pollutants into valuable energy-storage materials and the easy process, this work features a promising approach to prepare C/S cathodes for Li-S batteries. The special structural and textural characteristics of CNHPC might be attractive to other practical applications such as supercapacitors and catalysis.

Abstract:Chromium-based transition metal sulfide such as chromium hemi trisulfide (Cr2S3) gradually emerges as a potential lithium-ion host material considering its relatively large specific capacity along with low cost advantage. However, some excruciating issues such as serious particle aggregation, large volume expansion and insufficient inherent conductivity always result in an inferior Li-storage behavior such as low reversible capacity, limited cycling life and poor high-rate performance. Rational structure design and effective combination with suitable component are crucial to achieve superior Li-storage performance. Herein, a heterostructured composite with small Cr2S3 nanosheets embedded into phenanthroline-derived N-doped porous carbon skeleton (Cr2S3/NC) has been synthesized through a calcination and sulfuration route. In as-prepared Cr2S3/NC composite, Cr2S3 nanosheets are well confined by carbon matrix, which is conductive to an effective suppression on aggregation and volume change. Meanwhile, porous conductive carbon framework supplies desirable expressway for fast electron delivery and reduces the distance for lithium ions diffusion. Consequently, the Cr2S3/NC anode delivers a remarkably elevated Li-storage performance.
