Abstract:Zinc N,N′-piperazinebis(methylenephosphonic acid) (PPMPA-Zn) was melt blended with high-density polyethylene-g-maleic anhydride (HDPE-MA) to fabricate flame-retardant HDPE-MA/PPMPA-Zn composites. The thermal stability and flame retardancy of the composites were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and cone calorimetry. The incorporation of PPMPA-Zn did not appreciably increase the thermal stability of HDPE-MA, but the residual char content increased to 18.7% when the content of PPMPA-Zn reached 25 wt%. X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy tests showed that the residual char was composed mainly of Zn(PO3)2, Zn11(HPO 3)8(OH)6 and amorphous graphite. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of samples collected after cone calorimetric tests also confirmed the formation of char in the sample with 25 wt% PPMPA-Zn loading in HDPE-MA, and the char layer acted as a compact and intact physical barrier in the condensed phase. Even at a loading as low as 5 wt% PPMPA-Zn, the peak value of the heat release rate (PHRR) was reduced by 38% compared with that of pure HDPE-MA. In contrast to other intumescent flame retardants, the introduction of PPMPA-Zn enhanced not only the flame retardancy but also the mechanical properties of HDPE-MA. For example, the yield strength and Young's modulus of HDPE-MA with 5 wt% PPMPA-Zn were 125% and 128% higher, respectively, than those of the pure HDPE-MA matrix. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are considered as the potential flame retardant substances with proper flame retardancy. Despite their unique structural features and adjustable chemical composition, MOFs alone could hardly meet all the requirements of the commercial flame retardant applications. Recently, co-application of MOFs and inorganic or organic additives has been introduced as a novel approach to obtaining highly efficient flame retardant polymer nanocomposites. The synergistic effect of these additives can resolve the limitations of MOFs. This review addresses the flame retardant mechanism of MOFs, and their composites application and new prospects of MOFs to promote fire safety in polymers. This review focuses on the latest studies on MOFs as efficient flame retardant additives for diverse polymer composites and their impact on thermal stability and flame retardancy.

Abstract:Abstract High flammability of polymers has become a major issue which has restricted its applications. Recently, highly crystalline materials and metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), which consisted of metal ions and organic linkers, have been intensively employed as novel fire retardants (FRs) for a variety of polymers (MOF/polymer). The MOFs possessed abundant transition metal species, fire-retardant elements and potential carbon source accompanied with the facile tuning of the structure and property, making MOF, its derivatives and MOF hybrids promising for fire retardancy research. The recent progress and strategies to prepare MOF-based FRs are emphasized and summarized. The fire retardancy mechanisms of MOF/polymer composites are explained, which may guide the future design for efficient MOF-based FRs. Finally, the challenges and prospects related to different MOF-based FRs are also discussed and aim to provide a fast and holistic overview, which is beneficial for researchers to quickly get up to speed with the latest development in this field.

Abstract:<p>Metal-organic flame retardants (MOFRs) have been constantly applied to enhance fire safety of polymers. Metallic compounds positively improve the MOFRs' performance in suppressing smoke and toxic gases emissions during combustion of polymers. While organics endow MOFRs with the possibility of high efficiency and excellent compatibility. Based on the combination types between organics and metallic compounds, MOFRs are systematically divided into three categories in this review, that is, organic modified inorganic flame retardants (OMIFRs), metal-organic salts (MOSs) and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Metallic components in OMIFRs are bonded with organics in three approaches: encapsulation, intercalation and chemical grafting. Metal ions in MOSs can be replaced via ion-exchange method and thus produce different organometallic salts. Based on sodium alginate, phytic acid and phosphate, various high-efficiency flame-retardant alginates, phytates and metal-organic phosphates are synthesized and applied. As burgeoning flame-retardant substance, MOFs are divided into different types based on types of ligands, that is 2-MIM, aromatic polyacids, and other synthesized materials. Under guidelines of molecular design and metal-organic synergistic flame-retardant mechanisms, MOFRs will be continuously updated and developed. This review summarizes combustion behaviors of polymer/MOFRs composites and presents short comments about upcoming research opportunities and challenges in this field.</p>

Abstract:Polymer matrix is vulnerable to fire hazards and needs to add flame retardants to enhance its performance and make its application scenarios more extensive. At this stage, it is more necessary to add multiple flame-retardant elements and build a multi-component synergistic system. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have been studied for nearly three decades since their introduction. MOFs are known for their structural advantages but have only been applied to flame-retardant polymers for a relatively short period of time. In this paper, we review the development of MOFs utilized as flame retardants and analyze the flame-retardant mechanisms in the gas phase and condensed phase from the original MOF materials, modified MOF composites, and MOF-derived composites as flame retardants, respectively. The effects of carbon-based materials, phosphorus-based materials, nitrogen-based materials, and biomass on the flame-retardant properties of polymers are discussed in the context of MOFs. The construction of MOF multi-structured flame retardants is also introduced, and a variety of MOF-based flame retardants with different morphologies are shown to broaden the ideas for subsequent research.

Abstract:Most organic polymeric materials have high flammability, for which the large amounts of smoke, toxic gases, heat, and melt drips produced during their burning cause immeasurable damages to human life and property every year. Despite some desirable results having been achieved by conventional flame-retardant methods, their application is encountering more and more difficulties with the ever-increasing high flame-retardant requirements such as high flame-retardant efficiency, great persistence, low release of heat, smoke, and toxic gases, and more importantly not deteriorating or even enhancing the overall properties of polymers. Under such condition, some advanced flame-retardant methods have been developed in the past years based on "all-in-one" intumescence, nanotechnology, in situ reinforcement, intrinsic char formation, plasma treatment, biomimetic coatings, etc., which have provided potential solutions to the dilemma of conventional flame-retardant methods. This review briefly outlines the development, application, and problems of conventional flame-retardant methods, including bulk-additive, bulk-copolymerization, and surface treatment, and focuses on the raise, development, and potential application of advanced flame-retardant methods. The future development of flame-retardant methods is further discussed.

Abstract:During the combustion of polymeric materials, plenty of heat, smoke, and toxic gases are produced that may cause serious harm to human health. Although the flame retardants such as halogen- and phosphorus-containing compounds can inhibit combustion, they cannot effectively reduce the release of toxic fumes. Zinc hydroxystannate (ZHS, ZnSn(OH)6) is an environmentally friendly flame retardant that has attracted extensive interest because of its high efficiency, safety, and smoke suppression properties. However, using ZHS itself may not contribute to the optimal flame retardant effect, which is commonly combined with other flame retardants to achieve more significant efficiency. Few articles systematically review the recent development of ZHS in the fire safety field. This review aims to deliver an insight towards further direction and advancement of ZHS in flame retardant and smoke suppression for multiple polymer blends. In addition, the fire retarded and smoke suppression mechanism of ZHS will be demonstrated and discussed in depth.

Abstract:The general flammability of polymer materials is a crucial problem to be solved in industrial applications. Polyphosphazenes, a kind organic-inorganic polymer and whose main chain is alternating by single and double bonds of phosphorus, nitrogen are endowed with excellent natural flame retardant synergies and thermal stability. Therefore, utilizing the designability of molecular structure and excellent flame retardant performance of polyphosphazene, a series of polyphosphazene flame retardants based on linear and cyclocrosslinked structures have been synthesized to improve the comprehensive properties especially the flame retardant properties, thermal stability and mechanical properties of materials, which is reviewed here. In particular, the molecular structure design and morphological changes of polyphosphazenes, flame retardant mechanism and the performance of flame retardant materials have been systematically discussed. As an important member of environmentally friendly halogen-free flame retardants, the challenges and opportunities encountered by polyphosphazene flame retardant materials have also been proposed in this review. In view of the excellent physical and chemical properties of polyphosphazenes, it's believed that an increasingly important role would be played by polyphosphazenes not only in flame retardant application but also in other application fields such as biomedicine and environmental adsorption.

Abstract:With the increasing emphasis on environmental protection, the development of flame retardants for epoxy resin (EP) has tended to be non-toxic, efficient, multifunctional and systematic. Currently reported flame retardants have been capable of providing flame retardancy, heat resistance and thermal stability to EP. However, many aspects still need to be further improved. This paper reviews the development of EPs in halogen-free flame retardants, focusing on phosphorus flame retardants, carbon-based materials, silicon flame retardants, inorganic nanofillers, and metal-containing compounds. These flame retardants can be used on their own or in combination to achieve the desired results. The effects of these flame retardants on the thermal stability and flame retardancy of EPs were discussed. Despite the great progress on flame retardants for EP in recent years, further improvement of EP is needed to obtain numerous eco-friendly high-performance materials.

Abstract:The progress of flame retarded polymer nanocomposites and coatings in China over the past decades are described in this review. Emphasis on flammability performance of polymer nanocomposites containing nanofillers, mainly layered inorganic compounds, nanofibers and nanoparticles, combined with conventional flame retardant additives are addressed based on the open literature. Polymeric coatings with improved flame retardancy prepared using a wide variety of additives and UV‐curing technology are also introduced. Derived from this research, the combination of multiple methods and technologies including catalyst and nanotechnology, is predicted to have a high probability to enhance char formation and improve the flame retardancy of polymeric materials. Abstract:This state‐of‐the‐art review is geared towards elucidating the molecular understanding of the carbon‐based flame‐retardant mechanisms for polymers via holistic characterisation combining detailed analytical assessments and computational material science. The use of carbon‐based flame retardants, which include graphite, graphene, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), carbon dots (CDs) and fullerenes, in their pure and functionalised forms are initially reviewed to evaluate their flame retardancy performance and to determine their elevation of the flammability resistance on various types of polymers. The early transition metal carbides such as MXenes, regarded as next generation carbon‐based flame retardants, are discussed with respect to their superior flame retardancy and multifunctional applications. At the core of this review is the utilisation of cutting‐edge molecular dynamics (MD) simulations which sets a precedence of an alternative bottom‐up approach to fill the knowledge gap through insights into the thermal resisting process of the carbon‐based flame retardants, such as the formation of carbonaceous char and intermediate chemical reactions offered by the unique carbon bonding arrangements and microscopic in‐situ architectures. Combining MD simulations with detailed experimental assessments and characterisation, a more targeted development as well as a systematic material synthesis framework can be realised for the future development of advanced flame‐retardant polymers. Abstract:As an abundant and attractive element, the emergence of new carbon-based materials brings revolutionary development in material science and technology. Carbon-based materials have spawned considerable interest for fabricating polymer composites/nanocomposites with greatly improved mechanical, thermal, gas barrier, conductivity, and flame retardant performance. In this review, the importance of carbon-based materials and the necessity of fire resistance for polymeric materials are initially introduced. Then, the fundamental flame retardant mechanisms and experimental analytical techniques are described to understand the relationship between structures and flame retardant properties. The main section is dedicated to the preparation and properties of multifunctional polymer composites/nanocomposites with carbon-based materials, with special emphasis on the flame retardant properties of these materials. A wide variety of carbon-based materials are discussed for use in flame retardant polymer nanocomposite, including graphite, graphene, carbon nanotubes, fullerenes as well as some new emerging carbon forms (carbon nitride, carbon aerogels, etc). Finally, a brief outlook at the developments in carbon-based materials for flame retardant polymeric composites is given by discussing the major progress, opportunities, and challenges.
Rare earth-based flame retardants for polymer composites: Status and challenges

Abstract:Rare earth elements, the collection for 17 chemical elements in the third main group B on the periodic table of chemical elements, have received intensive attention in recent years. Based on the special electronic structure and physiochemical properties, rare earth elements are used as efficient flame retardants for polymers. Nowadays, various methods have been used for the synthesis of rare earth-based flame retardants, including precipitation, in situ polymerization and self-assembly methods. To date, zero-dimensional (0D), one-dimensional (1D), two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) rare earth-based flame retardants have been developed to impart excellent fire safety to versatile polymeric materials, e.g. polyester, epoxy resin, polyurethane and polyolefin. The processing methods and flame retardancy of rare earth-based flame retardant/polymer composites are summarized. Subsequently, the flame-retardant mechanism of rare earth-based flame retardants in polymers is reviewed. Finally, the challenges and development prospects of rare earth-based flame retardant/polymer composites are discussed.

Abstract:The catalytic flame retardant system has the characteristics of the low addition amount, high char formation efficiency, stable carbon structure at high temperature and so on. The research on flame retardant method and mechanism of the catalytic flame retardant system has become more and more important. In this paper, the status of research and development on catalytic flame-retardant polymer systems at home and abroad was reviewed. The applications research progress on metal oxides, carbon materials, metal salts, montmorillonite, molecular sieves and boron phosphors in catalytic flame-retardant polymer systems was introduced. The catalytic mechanism in the char-forming process of condensed phase was discussed. At last, it was pointed out that the development trend of catalytic flame retardant polymer materials is to develop new carbon materials represented by graphene and to achieve superfine and organic of catalytic flame retardant.

Abstract:An overview of recent developments of flame-retardant nylon 6 and nylon 66 is presented in this paper. The research of flame-retardant composites is mainly through adding flame-retardant elements to nylon molecules, which can be divided into physical addition and chemical addition. Each of these two methods has its advantages and disadvantages. In this paper, according to the different addition methods and flame-retardant mechanism of various flame-retardants, the flame-retardant properties of phosphorus flame-retardants, nitrogen flame-retardants, bio based flame-retardants and synergistic systems, as well as their effects on the mechanical properties of flame-retardant composites have been critically reviewed and summarized. This review will objectively explore and give new direction for the development of the flame-retardant nylon materials, which would be more accessible to the emerging field of materials science.

Abstract:<p>Over the past decade, hybrid flame retardant technology has gained increasing research interests because hybridization could integrate the special function of solo ingredient into a whole, thus showing potential as advanced flame retardants to endow polymer composites with high flame retardant efficiency, reinforcing effect and multifunctionality. In this review, diverse preparation methods of hybrid flame retardants through covalent linkage, ionization assembly, hydrogen bonding and π-π interaction are firstly introduced. The main part is dedicated to the effect of binary hybrid flame retardants including inorganic-organic and inorganic-inorganic hybrid systems on the properties of polymer composites/nanocomposites, with focus on their fire safety characteristics. Subsequently, the comprehensive properties of the ternary or more complicated hybrid flame retardant systems are also discussed. Finally, we give a brief summary on perspective for this new arising flame retardant technology.</p>

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), as a new family of nanomaterials with multiple dimensions, present enormous potential in different applications due to their high specific surface area and porosity, easy chemical functionalization, and excellent designability of nanostructure. These peculiar properties make MOFs promising alternatives as nanofillers for the fabrication of high-performance and multifunctional composites. In the past five years from 2017 to 2022, many researchers have investigated the flame retardant effects and mechanisms of MOFs in various polymeric materials. Statistical analysis based on bibliometrics showed that the research of MOFs flame retardant epoxy composites accounts for about 40% of the flame retardant field of MOFs, which is also very necessary to be sorted out separately. And to our knowledge there is no comprehensive report on MOFs flame retardant epoxy composites. Here, this review provides the latest advances of MOFs in flame retardant epoxy composites using pure MOFs, MOFs derivatives, functionalized MOFs, and synergistic systems based on MOFs and other functional components. The modification strategies and flame retardant efficiency of MOFs-based flame retardants are analyzed with special emphasis on the flame retardant mechanisms of different components. In addition, most MOFs-based flame retardant composites exhibit multiple functions that benefit from their inherent properties such as wave absorption as well as mechanical enhancement, thus promising in some high-end applications. Finally, the opportunities and challenges for the future development of MOFs-based flame retardants were summarized and prospected. This work is also expected to facilitate researchers to quickly understand the latest developments in this field and guide their effective design.

Abstract:Polymer materials are ubiquitous in daily life. While polymers are often convenient and helpful, their properties often obscure the fire hazards they may pose. Therefore, it is of great significance in terms of safety to study the flame retardant properties of polymers while still maintaining their optimal performance. Current literature shows that although traditional flame retardants can satisfy the requirements of polymer flame retardancy, due to increases in product requirements in industry, including requirements for durability, mechanical properties, and environmental friendliness, it is imperative to develop a new generation of flame retardants. In recent years, the preparation of modified two-dimensional nanomaterials as flame retardants has attracted wide attention in the field. Due to their unique layered structures, two-dimensional nanomaterials can generally improve the mechanical properties of polymers via uniform dispersion, and they can form effective physical barriers in a matrix to improve the thermal stability of polymers. For polymer applications in specialized fields, different two-dimensional nanomaterials have potential conductivity, high thermal conductivity, catalytic activity, and antiultraviolet abilities, which can meet the flame retardant requirements of polymers and allow their use in specific applications. In this review, the current research status of two-dimensional nanomaterials as flame retardants is discussed, as well as a mechanism of how they can be applied for reducing the flammability of polymers.
