Abstract:Entropy decreases on the Earth due to day/night temperature differences. This decrease exceeds the decrease in entropy on the Earth related to evolution by many orders of magnitude. Claims by creationists that science is somehow inconsistent with regard to evolution are thus show to be baseless.

Abstract:The dynamics of molecular collisions in a macroscopic body are encoded by the parameter Thermodynamic entropy - a statistical measure of the number of molecular configurations that correspond to a given macrostate. Directionality in the flow of energy in macroscopic bodies is described by the Second Law of Thermodynamics: In isolated systems, that is systems closed to the input of energy and matter, thermodynamic entropy increases. The dynamics of the lower level interactions in populations of replicating organisms is encoded by the parameter Evolutionary entropy, a statistical measure which describes the number and diversity of metabolic cycles in a population of replicating organisms. Directionality in the transformation of energy in populations of organisms is described by the Fundamental Theorem of Evolution: In systems open to the input of energy and matter, Evolutionary entropy increases, when the energy source is scarce and diverse, and decreases when the energy source is abundant and singular. This article shows that when rho to 0, and N to infinity, where rho is the production rate of the external energy source, and N denote the number of replicating units, evolutionary entropy, an organized state of energy; and thermodynamic entropy, a randomized state of energy, coincide. Accordingly, the Fundamental Theorem of Evolution, is a generalization of the Second Law of Thermodynamics.

Abstract:Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection on the basis of inherited random individual variation and excessive offspring remains controversial. Arguments derive from religion (creationism)--disagreement with the Darwinian reduction of teleology to physical causation, from science--nonselective mechanism, and from logic--negation of the possibility of proof of any scientific theory allowing only for validity thusfar. Experimentation on Darwinism is beset with a practical obstacle--unattainable duration, and a logical one--nonpredictability inherent in the randomness of variation. Evolution and creationism need not be contradictive if viewed in their separate domains--rational versus miraculous.
Remarkable Evolutionary Laws of Absolute and Relative Entropies with Dynamical Systems

Abstract:The evolution of entropy is derived with respect to dynamical systems. For a stochastic system, its relative entropy $D$ evolves in accordance with the second law of thermodynamics; its absolute entropy $H$ may also be so, provided that the stochastic perturbation is additive and the flow of the vector field is nondivergent. For a deterministic system, $dH/dt$ is equal to the mathematical expectation of the divergence of the flow (a result obtained before), and, remarkably, $dD/dt = 0$. That is to say, relative entropy is always conserved. So, for a nonlinear system, though the trajectories of the state variables, say $\ve x$, may appear chaotic in the phase space, say $\Omega$, those of the density function $\rho(\ve x)$ in the new ``phase space'' $L^1(\Omega)$ are not; the corresponding Lyapunov exponent is always zero. This result is expected to have important implications for the ensemble predictions in many applied fields, and may help to analyze chaotic data sets.

Abstract:We argue that in Universes where future and past differ only by the entropy content a psychological arrow of time pointing in the direction of entropy increase can arise from natural selection in biological evolution. We show that this effect can be demonstrated in very simple toy computer simulations of evolution in an entropy increasing or decreasing environment.

Abstract:Universe, ecosystem, social system, etc. are evolving systems. The evolving processes of these systems have gradual small changes and rapid drastic changes with uncertainties under the constraints of environment. Systems, as a whole, are evolving toward complexity, diversity and variety with fluctuations and jumps. New order emerges from “mutations”. The evolution is both chance-dependent and path-dependent. In this paper three basics: entropy, information and noise are emphasized with regard to system evolution which is a field that can give people wisdom to solve system problems with domain knowledge.

Abstract:Understanding the evolution of entropy in the universe is a fundamental aspect of cosmology. This paper investigates the evolution of entropy in a spatially flat $K=0$ universe, focusing on the contributions of matter, radiation, and dark energy components. The study derives the rate of change of entropy with respect to cosmic time, taking into account the scaling relations of energy densities and temperatures for different components. The analysis reveals the dominance of radiation entropy at early times, transitioning to matter dominance as the universe expands. The constant contribution of dark energy entropy throughout cosmic time is also considered. The paper acknowledges the limitations of the simplified model and the omission of entropy generation processes, emphasizing the importance of future research to incorporate these aspects. The results highlight the complex interplay between different components and provide insights into the dynamics of entropy in the expanding universe. This study lays the foundation for further investigations into entropy evolution, urging the consideration of more comprehensive models and numerical techniques to achieve a deeper understanding of the universe's thermodynamic behavior.

Abstract:Darwinian fitness describes the capacity of an organism to appropriate resources from the environment and to convert these resources into net-offspring production. Studies of competition between related types indicate that fitness is analytically described by entropy, a statistical measure which is positively correlated with population stability, and describes the number of accessible pathways of energy flow between the individuals in the population. Directionality theory is a mathematical model of the evolutionary process based on the concept evolutionary entropy as the measure of fitness. The theory predicts that the changes which occur as a population evolves from one non-equilibrium steady state to another are described by the following directionality principle–fundamental theorem of evolution: (a) an increase in evolutionary entropy when resource composition is diverse, and resource abundance constant; (b) a decrease in evolutionary entropy when resource composition is singular, and resource abundance variable. Evolutionary entropy characterizes the dynamics of energy flow between the individual elements in various classes of biological networks: (a) where the units are individuals parameterized by age, and their age-specific fecundity and mortality; where the units are metabolites, and the transitions are the biochemical reactions that convert substrates to products; (c) where the units are social groups, and the forces are the cooperative and competitive interactions between the individual groups. % This article reviews the analytical basis of the evolutionary entropic principle, and describes applications of directionality theory to the study of evolutionary dynamics in two biological systems; (i) social networks–the evolution of cooperation; (ii) metabolic networks–the evolution of body size. Statistical thermodynamics is a mathematical model of macroscopic behavior in inanimate matter based on entropy, a statistical measure which describes the number of ways the molecules that compose the a material aggregate can be arranged to attain the same total energy. This theory predicts an increase in thermodynamic entropy as the system evolves towards its equilibrium state. We will delineate the relation between directionality theory and statistical thermodynamics, and review the claim that the entropic principle for thermodynamic systems is the limit, as the resource production rate tends to zero, and population size tends to infinity, of the entropic principle for evolutionary systems.

Abstract:Ludwig Boltzmann's move in his seminal paper of 1877, introducing a statistical understanding of entropy, was a watershed moment in the history of physics. The work not only introduced quantization and provided a new understanding of entropy, it challenged the understanding of what a law of nature could be. Traditionally, nomological necessity, that is, specifying the way in which a system must develop, was considered an essential element of proposed physical laws. Yet, here was a new understanding of the Second Law of Thermodynamics that no longer possessed this property. While it was a new direction in physics, in other important scientific discourses of that time—specifically Huttonian geology and Darwinian evolution, similar approaches were taken in which a system's development followed principles, but did so in a way that both provided a direction of time and allowed for non-deterministic, though rule-based, time evolution. Boltzmann referred to both of these theories, especially the work of Darwin, frequently. The possibility that Darwin influenced Boltzmann's thought in physics can be seen as being supported by Boltzmann's later writings.

Abstract:The challenges and claims of hypothetical violations of the Second Law of thermodynamics have been a topic of many scientific, philosophical and social publications, even in the most prestigious scientific journals. Fascination with challenging the Second Law has further accelerated throughout the development of statistical and quantum physics, and information theory. It is phenomenologically reasoned here that non-equilibrium, useful work-energy potential is always dissipated to heat, and thus thermodynamic entropy (a measure of thermal disorder, not any other disorder) is generated always and everywhere, at any scale without exception, including life processes, open systems, micro-fluctuations, gravity or entanglement. Furthermore, entropy cannot be destroyed by any means at any scale (entropy is conserved in ideal, reversible processes and irreversibly generated in real processes), and thus, entropy cannot overall decrease, but only overall increase. Creation of ordered structures or live species always dissipate useful energy and generate entropy, without exception, and thus without Second Law violation. Entropy destruction would imply spontaneous increase in non-equilibrium, with mass-energy flux displacement against cause-and-effect, natural forces, as well as negate the reversible existence of the very equilibrium. In fact, all resolved challengers’ paradoxes and misleading violations of the Second Law to date have been resolved in favor of the Second Law and never against. We are still to witness a single, still open Second Law violation, to be confirmed.

Abstract:We formulate a field theory for a class of spin-singlet quantum Hall states (the Haldane-Rezayi state and its variants) which have been proposed for the quantized Hall plateaus observed at the second lowest Landau level. A new essential ingredient is a class of super Chern-Simons field. We show that the known properties of the states are consistently described by it. We also give a 2+1 dimensional hierarchical construction. Implications of the proposal are discussed and a new physical picture of composite particles at the second lowest Landau level emerges.

Abstract:It is a common belief that in any environment where life is possible, life will be generated. Here it is suggested that the cause for a spontaneous generation of complex systems is probability driven processes. Based on equilibrium thermodynamics, it is argued that in low occupation number statistical systems, the second law of thermodynamics yields an increase of thermal entropy and a canonic energy distribution. However, in high occupation number statistical systems, the same law for the same reasons yields an increase of information and a Benford's law/power-law energy distribution. It is therefore, plausible, that eventually the heat death is not necessarily the end of the universe.

Abstract:In its business-as-usual scenario, the 1972 Club-of-Rome report—The Limits to Growth—describes the collapse of the world economy around the year 2030, either because of the scarcity of natural resources or because of pollution. Mainstream economists, the high priests of secular societies, condemned it fiercely. Their gospel of perpetual economic growth, during which technological progress would solve all problems, promises a bright future for all mankind. On the other hand, engineers, natural scientists, and mathematicians realized that the breakdown scenario is due to the inclusion of the First and the Second Law of Thermodynamics in the Club-of-Rome's world model. According to these laws, nothing happens in the world without energy conversion and entropy production. In 1865, Rudolph Clausius, the discoverer of entropy, published the laws as the constitution of the universe. Entropy is the physical measure of disorder. Without a proper understanding of energy and entropy in the economy, all efforts to achieve sustainability will fail.

Abstract:Life is a planetary feature that depends on its environment, but it has also strongly shaped the physical conditions on Earth, having created conditions highly suitable for a productive biosphere. Clearly, the second law of thermodynamics must apply to these dynamics as well, but how? What insights can we gain by placing life and its effects on planetary functioning in the context of the second law? In Kleidon (2010), I described a thermodynamic Earth system perspective by placing the functioning of the Earth system in terms of the second law. The Earth system is represented by a planetary hierarchy of energy transformations that are driven predominantly by incoming solar radiation, these transformations are constrained by the second law, but they are also modified by the feedbacks from various dissipative activities. It was then hypothesised that life evolves its dissipative activity to the limits imposed by this hierarchy and evolves feedbacks aimed at pushing these limits to higher levels of dissipative activity. Here I provide an update of this perspective. I first review applications to climate and global climate change to demonstrate its success in predicting magnitudes of physical processes, particularly regarding temperatures, heat redistribution and hydrological cycling. I then focus on the limits to dissipative activity of the biosphere. It would seem that the limitations by thermodynamics act indirectly by imposing limitations associated with transport and material exchange. I substantiate this interpretation and discuss the broader implications for habitability, the emergence and evolution of life, and the contemporary biosphere.

Abstract:Darwin's book, Origin of the Species has been a source of public controversy for more than hundred and fifty years. Court cases and mountains of words have not dispelled this controversy. In this paper, a quantitative approach using simple mathematics shows that the concept of evolution by natural selection using only random choice of variables does work. The procedure applied to the optical equations forming the phenotype of a spider eye produces an eye design modeled after the measurements by Land and Barth.

Abstract:The concept of entropy in nonequilibrium macroscopic systems is investigated in the light of an extended equation of motion for the density matrix obtained in a previous study. It is found that a time-dependent information entropy can be defined unambiguously, but it is the time derivative or entropy production that governs ongoing processes in these systems. The differences in physical interpretation and thermodynamic role of entropy in equilibrium and nonequilibrium systems is emphasized and the observable aspects of entropy production are noted. A basis for nonequilibrium thermodynamics is also outlined

Equivalence of 'Reversible' and 'Irreversible' Entropy Modeling

Abstract:There are currently two main, continuum models of entropy: a 'reversible', Clausius entropy model and an 'irreversible', Onsager-Prigogine entropy model. It is shown that the equations of the 'reversible' and the 'irreversible' entropy models are equivalent with respect to entropy accumulation, which entails same values of entropy change and, thus, same values of entropy. The equivalence contradicts the 'second fundamental equation' of the 'reversible' entropy model, dS = dQ/T, holding true for 'reversible' phenomena, only. The equivalence conforms with entropy history independence, which entails that equation dS = dQ/T must hold true for not 'reversible' phenomena, also. Several examples, e.g. by commercial engineering software, show that equation dS = dQ/T holds true for not 'reversible' phenomena, also. The two results of this analysis, the equivalence of the two entropy models and the falsity of 'reversibility', would be falsified by evidence for equation dS = dQ/T not holding true for not 'reversible' phenomena. No such evidence has been presented. The main consequence of the equivalence of the two entropy models is a signification simplification of the language used in the context of entropy modeling.

Abstract:The backbone of nonequilibrium thermodynamics is the stability structure, where entropy is related to a Lyapunov function of thermodynamic equilibrium. Stability is the background of natural selection: unstable systems are temporary, and stable ones survive. The physical concepts from the stability structure and the related formalism of constrained entropy inequality are universal by construction. Therefore, the mathematical tools and the physical concepts of thermodynamics help formulate dynamical theories of any systems in social and natural sciences.

Abstract:This paper presents a comprehensive introduction and systematic derivation of the evolutionary equations for absolute entropy H and relative entropy D, some of which exist sporadically in the literature in different forms under different subjects, within the framework of dynamical systems. In general, both H and D are dissipated, and the dissipation bears a form reminiscent of the Fisher information; in the absence of stochasticity, dH/dt is connected to the rate of phase space expansion, and D stays invariant, i.e., the separation of two probability density functions is always conserved. These formulas are validated with linear systems, and put to application with the Lorenz system and a large-dimensional stochastic quasi-geostrophic flow problem. In the Lorenz case, H falls at a constant rate with time, implying that H will eventually become negative, a situation beyond the capability of the commonly used computational technique like coarse-graining and bin counting. For the stochastic flow problem, it is first reduced to a computationally tractable low-dimensional system, using a reduced model approach, and then handled through ensemble prediction. Both the Lorenz system and the stochastic flow system are examples of self-organization in the light of uncertainty reduction. The latter particularly shows that, sometimes stochasticity may actually enhance the self-organization process.
