Abstract:Dewey’s educational thought was not given due attentions in Germany until the end of the 20th century.In the period of German Empire,although Gurlitt and Kerschensteiner have used Dewey’s i-deas,they mainly translated and interpreted his thought from a nationalistic standpoint.During the period of Weimar Republic,the democratic spirits advocated by the new government and Hylla’s translation of Democracy and Education promoted German reception of Dewey’s thought.Some educators even trans-formed Dewey’s ideas into practice in their school reforms.However,Dewey’s educational ideas did not have a visible influence on German school practice,and were even misused,ignored and devalued during this period,leading to a long-term misunderstanding of Dewey in Germany.To explore its reason,the concept of “languages of education”put forward by educational historian Tr?hler was used as a research in-strument.The finding shows that this phenomenon was mainly caused by the conflicts between Gei-steswissenchaft P?dagogik informed by the language of Bildung that dominated the Germany then and the German understanding of Dewey’s democratic thought.

From World War to Woods Hole: The Use of Wartime Research Models for Curriculum Reform

Abstract:The curriculum reform movement that began in the late 1950s is widely viewed as the result of a broadly academic effort to restore disciplinary rigor to education in the United States. Much of the work that went on developing the new curricular materials and educational approaches, however, is better understood as an experiment in applying innovative research and development techniques perfected by scientists during World War II. This essay traces the development of these newer methods of scientific analysis and examines how they were imported from the military research programs to the field of education by a select group of physicists centered around Jerrold Zacharias at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. It is to these physicists, I argue, that this curriculum reform movement owes its fundamental operational characteristics, its conception of the problem of education, and the means of its solution in America at midcentury. Exploring the historical origins of these reforms reveals a good deal about how scientists of the time framed the portability of military techniques, organization, and administrative models of action and provides insight into the current emphasis on technique and performance that has come to characterize United States educational policy.

Abstract:Callaghan's Ruskin College Speech in 1976 revived interest in the reasons for the demise of the compulsory curriculum 50 years earlier. The principal reasons advanced around or before 1976 were that the President of the Board of Education in 1926, Lord Eustace Percy, was simply putting ‘the finishing touches’ to a process of emancipation which had been under way since at least 1904, or that it was a political ruse to thwart Labour's curricular ambitions when in office. The article examines these and three other interpretations, that it was part of a plan to free the curriculum to introduce technical and vocation education, to win teachers away from the Labour left and to meet the demands for retrenchment.

Abstract:Many researchers have considered recent and intergenerational immigrant children’s perspectives on immigration policies. Fewer have investigated nonimmigrant children’s views despite children’s sociopolitical identities forming long before they can vote. Drawing from data generated in spring 2017, the author illustrates how young children at an urban, midwestern school argued against the Republican administration’s (anti-)immigration policies. Framed as an ethnographic case study, the author focuses on how third graders enacted justice-oriented identities as they wrote to congressional representatives about contemporary immigration policies. By attuning to how children embedded multiple institutional and political contexts in their written rationale, the author explicates the tensions and possibilities for nonimmigrant children in writing policies and possibilities for tomorrow. Ultimately, the author argues adults must intentionally sustain children’s civic participation in ways beyond the niceties that plague early years classrooms.

Controlling the Past to Control the Future: Christian Nationalism and Mandatory Patriotic Education in Public Schools

Abstract:Recent debates about whether educators should teach America's racist history have sparked activism and legislation to ensure students are taught American history in such a way that promotes "patriotism," amplifying cherished national myths, emphasizing American exceptionalism, and erasing negative historical facts. Building on insights from both social dominance theory and Christian nationalism research, we propose Christian nationalism combines legitimizing myths that whitewash America's past with authoritarian impulses and thus seeks to enforce "patriotic" content in public school classrooms. We also theorize this connection varies across racial, partisan, and ideological identities. Data from a nationally‐representative survey of Americans affirm Christian nationalism is by far the leading predictor Americans believe "We should require public school teachers to teach history in a way that promotes patriotism." This association is consistent across race (possibly due to divergent meanings of both "Christian nationalism" and "patriotism" across groups), but varies by partisanship and ideological identity for whites. Specifically, Christian nationalism brings whites who identify with the ideological and political left into complete alignment with their conservative counterparts who are already more likely to support mandatory patriotic education. Our findings provide critical context for ongoing battles over public‐school curricula and education's role in perpetuating social privilege.

Abstract:In the literature on citizenship education, frequent references are made to Dewey. However, educationalists do not always interpret him correctly. To provide some counterbalance, I explain Dewey’s views on education and democracy. I base this, not only on ‘ Democracy and Education’, but also on 17 articles that Dewey wrote after ‘ Democracy and Education’, and on his ‘ Ethics’ and two earlier works, frequently cited by educationalists: ‘ Ethical Principles Underlying Education’ and ‘ School and Society’. According to Dewey, democracy and education are two sides of the same coin. Both involve and foster self-determination, self-development and participating in the common good, enlightened by intelligent understanding and scientific spirit. At the present, it is customary to define democratic citizenship education primarily in terms of social and moral learning, sometimes as though it can be distinguished from academic learning, as something extra besides learning subject matter. When such an approach is attributed to Dewey, as it often is, this is unwarranted.

Abstract:The following chapter chronicles the history of civic education at the primary and secondary levels in the United States. While educators advanced broad notions of what it meant to be an American – embodied by notions of republican citizenship in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and democratic citizenship in the twentieth – in both eras the quest for broad political consensus rendered “Americanism” vapid, incoherent, or reactionary. Thus, the chapter argues the nation’s educators faced the dilemma of encouraging vital membership in a political body that eschewed their efforts. While the same dynamics continue today, the chapter concludes with lessons drawn from these earlier paradigms of civic education.

Abstract:Britain was an imperial power in the quarter-century before the outbreak of World War. Leaders expressed a sense of moral responsibility for ensuring competent and just rule for the nations of the Empire. At the same time, the fulfillment of this duty was a justification for the exercise of power itself, understood in ethical terms, and involved the preparation of a citizen of the Empire, both educated and shaped by universally accessible school education. The teaching of history, linked to the formation of the identity of the model citizen, has been subordinated to this preparation. The current article is an attempt at indicating the presence and purpose of historical threads in materials intended for the initial learning of reading.

Abstract:The ANNALS of the American Academy of Political and Social Science, Volume 705, Issue 1, Page 24-38, January 2023. After being overlooked in major education debates and policy initiatives for decades, civic education has recently become the topic of highly polarized debates and legislative battles over what and how we should be teaching our young people about the nation's history. How should racial injustice be discussed in schools? Are schools indoctrinating students? In a robust democracy, controversy about what students should learn is appropriate and desirable, but some of the rhetoric that has dominated the recent discussions violates the deliberative norms that schools should help students to develop. At a time when the public should be carefully deliberating how to educate students, civic education is instead being used instrumentally to win political contests. I present one approach to facing this challenge—the Educating for American Democracy project. This project is not the conclusive answer to the question, "What should we teach?" but rather an attempt to model deliberative values, and I show that it offers important lessons for people and institutions who are attempting to address matters of curricular content.

Jesse Olney's Innovative Geography Text of 1828 for Common Schools

Abstract:In the late 18th century, American authors began producing geography texts for use by common school (elementary) children. First and foremost among them was Jedidiah Morse; however, another less celebrated author was Jesse Olney, whose work may have had a more lasting effect on young American minds. His text was published in 1828 and was followed in 1829 by a companion atlas. The text was unusual in that it began with an exercise on local geography rather than a description of the solar system. It was profusely illustrated and the pictures were integrated with the text, unusual for its day. Descriptions of national character, often of a very negative nature, were included. These descriptions were opinions presented as facts. The 98 editions, consisting of millions of copies, in widespread use over at least 30 years, meant that generations of school children grew to adulthood greatly influenced by Olney. A gift of a copy of his text from my daughter, Susanne, is responsible for my interest in Jesse Olney. Examination of the illustrations was like opening a time capsule for a glimpse of the young United States and the world of the early 19th century. I read Olney's ideas about the use of visual materials in education with great interest. When I wanted to learn more about Jesse Olney and his approach, I discovered there were few sources of information, hence this article and the research that lead to it. Thanks again, Susie. Abstract:The United States today is marked by a culture that is both militarized and commoditized, in which education has become both an enabler to a state of permanent war and a facilitator of business and industry imperatives. The increasing militarism of America’s schools, colleges, and universities demands a response. Active and informed dissent is what’s required, for nothing is more truly American or patriotic than well-informed dissent that seeks to protect vital liberties. This article suggests several ways that educators can alert students to the twin perils of militarism and an education driven too narrowly by "learn to earn" imperatives.

Abstract:This article documents the emergence of a Mexican-American political consciousness in a Central Texas Community and the efforts to dismantle decades of inequitable, exclusionary educational policies and practices. We take readers into a community on the verge of profound change by exploring primary historical data and situating the voices of community leaders in a historical context. We employ a theory of change framework (RASPPA) to chronicle a community’s response to macro-level societal changes. To understand the need for Mexican-American activism in Central Texas, we providing a survey of literature that chronicles Mexican-American experience in Texas. This is a story about a community realizing its political capacity and leveraging its own agency for change. We take a walk-through history and use place, race, identity and courage to inform a new vision for educational equity.

Abstract:ABSTRACT: This study explores Noah Webster's representation of vocabulary derived from indigenous languages in the first edition of his American Dictionary of the English Language (1828). Previous scholarship on Webster has revealed much about how his lexicography reflected his nationalist politics, but the role that his treatment of indigenous languages plays in this narrative has not been explored. By analyzing words with indigenous origins as a distinct category within the Dictionary and bringing to light new evidence of Webster's etymological theories towards indigenous languages, this study emphasizes nativism as a tool in Webster's nationalist project and explores the historic treatment of indigenous languages and cultures in American dictionaries.
“For Home, Country and Race”: The Gendered Ideals of Citizenship in English Elementary and Evening Continuation Schools, 1885-1914

Abstract:Between 1885 and 1914, English Elementary and Evening Continuation Schools - the institutions designed to cater to the educational needs of the working class - engaged in both formal and informal efforts to indoctrinate their students in the principles of “good citizenship”. This ideological initiative was an attempt to construct “appropriate” individual and collective character traits in children, many of whom were never expected to attain formal political rights. The books and lessons of the schools tended to romanticize English history and use specific figures from the past to explain values and traits deemed especially worthy in the“good citizen”. This article points to the ways in which these projected civic virtues were explained to working-class boys through association with accepted notions of virtuous masculinity. Demonstrated with examples of both real and fictitious martial heroes this masculine code resembled the ethic of service to the nation prevalent in elite educational culture, but with an entirely different result implied.
