Abstract:Abstract Electrochromic supercapacitors (ESCs) are appealing for smart electronic device applications due to their advantages of dual-function integration. Unfortunately, the synchronous dual-function evaluation and the essential reaction mechanism are ambiguous. Herein, we constructed a 3D WO 3-x nanowire networks/fluorine-doped tin oxide (WO 3-x NWNs/FTO) bifunctional electrode for ESCs by a solvothermal self-crystal seeding method. The synchronous correspondence relationship between the optical and electrochemical performances of the WO 3-x NWNs/FTO electrode was explored using an operando spectra-electrochemical characterization method. It reveals an excellent areal capacity of 57.57 mF cm −2 with a high corresponding optical modulation (ΔT) of 85.05% and high optical-electrochemical cycling stability. Furthermore, the synergistic reaction mechanism between the Al 3+ ion intercalation behavior and the surface pseudocapacitance reaction during electrochemical cycling is revealed utilizing in situ X-ray diffraction. Based on these results, an ESC device was constructed by pairing WO 3-x /FTO as the cathode with V 2 O 5 nanoflowers/FTO (V 2 O 5 NFs/FTO) as the anode, which simultaneously deliver high capacity and large optical modulation. Moreover, the energy storage level of the ESC device could be visually monitored by rapid and reversible color transitions in real time. This work provides a promising pathway to developing multi-functional integrated smart supercapacitors.

Abstract:The crystal structure of WO3 is orderly arranged with WO6 structure, possessing crystal channels for convenient charge transfer and ion diffusion. Using effective strategies to broaden the crystal channels of this materials can improve the charge transfer and ion diffusion. In this work, we have facilely utilized a sample hydrogenation method to introduce distorted WO6 structures into the crystal of tungsten oxide, which leads to the crystal reconstruction and W5O14 formation with large crystal channels. Due to the existence of large crystal channels, as-fabricated W5O14 nanosheet arrays achieve a high specific capacitance of 1352 mF cm(-2) (524 F g(-1)) at current density of 1 mA cm(-2), much higher than that of WO3. In addition, W5O14 nanosheet arrays also exhibit good stability with 84% capacitance retention after 4000 cycles. Finally, the high energy and power density of the asymmetric full supercapacitor W5O14//RuO2 device shed light on the potentially commercial application of W5O14. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Facile fabrication of advanced tungsten oxide (WO3) or WO3 hydrate materials with superior electrochemical and electrochromic properties is of great value in energy-related applications. Self-doping (oxygen vacancy doping) and nanostructure regulation are considered efficient strategies to enhance the performance of bulk WO3 materials. Herein, novel WO3-x hydrate nanosheets were prepared by a one-pot template/surfactant-free solvothermal method employing Na2WO4·2H2O as precursors and ethanol as solvent. The morphology, structure, and composition of the prepared WO3-x hydrate nanosheets were demonstrated by TEM, AFM, XRD, Raman spectrum, and XPS. Furthermore, WO3-x hydrate nanosheets films with mesostructured architecture were formed on FTO glass substrates by the dip-coating process, which exhibited excellent electrochemical and electrochromic performance. As a proof-of-concept example, an analog smart window device (ASWD) was assembled by using the WO3-x hydrate nanosheet film on FTO glass as the working electrode, an FTO glass as the counter electrode, and LiClO4 in propylene carbonate as the electrolyte. The fabricated ASWD presented fascinating electrochromic performance with a wide optical modulation range (82.1%) at the wavelength of 670 nm, moderate switching time (9.6/10.4 s for bleaching/coloration), high coloration efficiency (111.8 cm2/C) and good cyclic stability (maintains 71.6% of the maximum dynamic modulation range after 1000 cycles). Ascribed to the easy preparation process and outstanding electrochromic properties, this kind of WO3-x hydrate nanosheet and its corresponding electrochromic devices are believed to have great potential applications in energy-saving engineering.

Abstract:Tungsten trioxide (WO3) is believed to be a promising electrode candidate for supercapacitors, due to its reversible surface redox reaction resulted from the almost same W-O bond lengths with different oxidation states. However, the specific capacitance of WO3 electrode is very low (< 250 mF cm(-2)) because of its low conductivity and slow surface redox reaction kinetics. Herein, to address these issues, mesoporous WO3 nanosheets with exposed (200) facets were anchored on activated carbon cloth (ACC) via a simple two-step process including heat treatment and alcohol-thermal process. The ACC was coated on WO3 seeds and proceed a heat treatment at 500 degrees C and the time of alcohol-thermal process were 7 h, 8 h, and 9 h labeled as WO3@ACC-n (n = 7, 8, 9). SEM and TEM images confirmed the WO3 nanosheets were successful anchored on the ACC. The WO3@ACC-8 electrode showed the best specific areal capacitance which could reach as high as 659 mF cm(-2) at a current density of 5 mA cm(-2) and superior stability with almost no decrease in 10,000 cycles in the presence of Na2SO4 as the neutral electrolyte. The capacitance is encouragingly much higher than the previously reported values in a three-electrode system in the neutral aqueous condition. DFT calculations reveal that, in comparison to the (002) and (020) facets, the exposed (200) facets of the mesoporous WO3 nanosheets triggers the superior Na+-adsorption, which accelerates the Na+-involved surface redox reaction for the boosted supercapacitor performance. A flexible asymmetric supercapacitor (FASC) was fabricated from the WO3@ACC electrode, which exhibits high energy density (0.5 mWh cm(-3)) and power density (62 mW cm(-3)) without any attenuation during +/- 180 degrees wide-angle bending.

Abstract:The electrochemical performance of tungsten oxide (WO3) is closely related to its morphology and lattice symmetry. However, current synthetic approaches are typically limited by product controllability, environmental friendliness, and low scalability. Here, a facile and high-efficient synthesis is reported of WO3 nanosheets based on the synergistic intercalation and oxidation of layered tungsten disulfide (WS2). The complete conversion from WS2 to WO3 is confirmed by crystallographic, spectroscopic, microscopic, and elemental analysis. The prepared WO3 nanosheets exhibit a superior specific capacitance of 480 F g(-1) at a current density of 1 A g(-1) and a good cycling stability at a current density of 10 A g(-1). Notably, benefitting from the 2D nanosheet structure and the high lattice symmetry, the cubic WO3 nanosheets possess a high specific capacitance of 384 F g(-1) at a high current density of 20 A g(-1), which is much higher than that of other WO3-based electrode materials.
Binder-Free Ws2 Nanosheets With Enhanced Crystallinity As A Stable Negative Electrode For Flexible Asymmetric Supercapacitors

Abstract:Tungsten disulfide (WS2) has been emerging as an attractive electrode material for supercapacitors because of its intrinsically layered structure and high capacitance. Unfortunately, most of the currently developed WS2-based electrodes suffer from poor conductivity and fast capacitance fading. In this work, we demonstrated that the durability of WS2 nanosheets can be remarkably boosted via improving their crystallinity and the first example of using these WS2 nanosheets as a high-energy and stable negative electrode for flexible asymmetric supercapacitors (ASCs). Electrochemical results reveal the WS2 nanosheets with enhanced crystallinity were able to deliver an excellent durability with more than 82% capacitance retention after 10 000 cycles and an areal capacitance of 0.93 F cm(-2) at 4 mA cm(-2). Importantly, when using the as-prepared WS2 nanosheets as a negative electrode, a flexible and stable ASC device with an extraordinary volumetric energy density of 0.97 mW h cm(-3) is obtained. This work affords new opportunities to use WS2 nanostructures and other 2D TMDs in constructing high-performance energy-storage devices.
Tungsten Oxide Nanofibers Self-Assembled Mesoscopic Microspheres As High-Performance Electrodes for Supercapacitor

Abstract:Mesoscopic WO3 microspheres composed of self-assembly nanofibers were prepared by hydrothermal reaction of tungsten acid potassium and H2O2. The mesoscopic WO3 microspheres offer desired porous properties and large effective active areas provided by intertwining nanofibers, thereby resulting in excellent supercapacitive properties due to facile electrolyte flow and fast reaction kinetics. In three electrode configuration, mesoscopic WO3 microspheres exhibit specific capacitance value of 797.05 Fg(-1) at the current density of 0.5 Ag-1 and excellent cycling stability without decay after 2000 cycles in 2 M H2SO4 aqueous solution. These values are superior to other reported WO3 composites. An asymmetric supercapacitor is constructed using the as-prepared WO3 mesoscopic microspheres as the positive electrode and the activated carbon as the negative electrode, which displays excellent electrochemical performance with a maximum energy density of 97.61 Wh kg(-1) and power density of 28.01 kW kg-1. These impressive performances suggest that the mesoscopic WO3 microspheres are promising electrode materials for supercapacitor. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
N-doped two-dimensional ultrathin NiO nanosheets for electrochromic supercapacitor

Abstract:The performance of electrochromic supercapacitors (ESCs) can be improved by the use of electrodes with high electronic conductivity and ion transport ability. Herein, two-dimensional (2D) N-doped NiO ultrathin nanosheets (N-NiO UTNSs) synthesized in situ on fluorine-doped tin oxide glass were used as bifunctional ESC electrodes. These electrodes exhibited an elevated specific capacitance (540 F g−1 at 1 A g−1), superior cycling stability (85% capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles), and good electrochromic properties (color change from colorless to black with a transmittance modulation of 73% and a coloration efficiency of up to 83.47 cm2 C−1 at 550 nm), which was ascribed to the high electronic conductivity of NiO (due to N doping) and the short ion diffusion path (due to the ultralow nanosheet thickness). To further explore the practical applications of N-NiO UTNSs, we constructed asymmetric ESCs by integrating NiO films with Fe2O3 films and revealed that these devices displayed applied voltage–dependent colors. Two charged asymmetric ESCs connected in series could light up a red light-emitting diode and changed color synchronously with charge state alteration. Thus, our results contribute to the development of Ni-based electrochromic supercapacitors exhibiting charge state-dependent color changes.

Abstract:WO3 nano-fibers with super large aspect ratio are synthesized on a Cu conductive current collector by using a simple hydrothermal method. The as-prepared WO3 nano-fibers can accommodate a large number of electrolyte ions and provide a rapid route for the migration of electrons and electrolyte ions due to its direct growth, high specific surface area, and one dimensional (1D) pipeline structure. The WO3 nano-fibers exhibit excellent cyclic reversibility (98% at 1.0 A g(-1)), good cycling stability (93% after 5000 cycles), high specific capacitance (436 F g(-1) at 1.0 A g(-1)) and low charge transfer resistance (29 Omega). After the WO3 nano-fibers are assembled into a symmetric supercapacitor, the symmetric supercapacitor device has a wide effective operating range of 0-1.8 V and high energy density of 99.0 Wh kg(-1) at the power density of 450 W kg(-1). The good electrochemical performances of as-prepared WO3 nano-fibers make it an attractive candidate for high energy storage systems and promising supercapacitor electrode material. Abstract:For making full use of the discoloration function of electrochromic (EC) devices and better show the charge and discharge states of supercapacitors (SCs), electrochromic supercapacitors (ECSCs) have attracted much attention and expectations in recent years. The research progress of tungsten-oxide-based electrochromic supercapacitors (ECSCs) in recent years is reviewed in this paper. Nanostructured tungsten oxide is widely used to facilitate ion implantation/extraction and increase the porosity of the electrode. The low-dimensional nanostructured tungsten oxide was compared in four respects: material scale, electrode life, coloring efficiency, and specific capacitance. Due to the mechanics and ductility of nano-tungsten oxide electrodes, they are very suitable for the preparation of flexible ECSCs. With the application of an organic protective layer and metal nanowire conductive electrode, the device has higher coloring efficiency and a lower activation voltage. Finally, this paper indicates that in the future, WO3-based ECSCs will develop in the direction of self-supporting power supply to meet the needs of use.
3D nanoporous ZnWO4 nanoparticles with excellent electrochemical performances for supercapacitors

Abstract:A new three-dimensional (3D) nanoporous ZnWO4 nanoparticles with WCl6 and Zn(NO3)2·6H2O as the precursors was prepared by electrospinning through a simple and facile progress of electrospinning. The 3D nanoporous ZnWO4 nanoparticles(3DN ZnWO4) were used as the electrode for supercapacitor application, and the electrochemical performance was analyzed, indicating the 3DN ZnWO4 supercapacitor is an ideal electrode material with an outstanding cycle, high specific capacitance and excellent rate capacitance, especially it can resist a high current charge and discharge with a little capacitance fading(specific capacitance decreases only 10% with the current density being increased from 40Ag−1 to 100Ag−1).

Abstract:Electrochromic-supercapacitors (ESCs) have shown great perspective in multifunctional smart devices due to their special function of monitoring the energy storage level by the visible color changes. However, the poor areal capacitance at high optical modulation(ΔT) and the inferior bifunctional lifespan hinder the practical application of ESCs. It is thus important to develop feasible ways to boost the optical-electrochemical properties and comprehend the corresponding inner mechanism. Inspired by nature’s conifer structure, herein, 3D hexagonal WO3 branched nanowire arrays/F-doped SnO2 (h-WO3 BNW/FTO) electrode have been successfully constructed via a single-step hydrothermal reaction followed by annealing process. Such biomimetic conifer-like structure is shaped by the separating crystal growth effect coupled with the specific topological structure of h-WO3. Benefiting from bionic structure, h-WO3 BNW/FTO electrode delivers a high areal specific capacity (0.0223 mAh cm−2) and large corresponding ΔT respond (80% ΔT at 650 nm) at 5 mV s−1, as well as outstanding optical-electrochemical cycle stability. Moreover, the aluminum storage mechanism during the optical-electrochemical process is affirmed using cyclic voltammetry and in-situ X-ray method. For practical application, the assembled ESC device based on the h-WO3 BNW/FTO electrode delivers a high 22.75 mF cm−2 areal specific capacitance, corresponding 45.81% ΔT (at 650 nm) and long-term bifunctional stability (over 90% bifunctional retention after 5000 cycles). Meanwhile, the visually monitoring capacity of the device is realized through the color changes. This study provides some insights into the biomimetic design for advanced bifunctional electrodes and the underlying mechanism affecting the electrochromic-charge storage performance.

Abstract:We successfully fabricate flexible electrochromic supercapacitor (SC) electrodes employing novel flexible transparent conducting substrates. The as-synthesized flexible electrochromic SC electrodes exhibit great electrochemical performances (13.6 mF cm(-2), 138.2 F g(-1)) and high coloration efficiency (80.2 cm(2) C-1), which demonstrate their potential applications in flexible smart windows combining energy storage and electrochromism.

Abstract:The design of transition metal oxides-based battery-type electrode materials with well-defined nanostructure have shown great potential in supercapacitors, due to high electrical conductivity and superior redox activity. Herein, the promising CoWO 4 @WO 3 -1 heterostructured nanosheets with rich oxygen vacancies is designed via two-step in situ construction process and following thermal treatment. The CoWO 4 @WO 3 -1 heterostructured nanosheet arrays grown on a flexible carbon cloth substrate can provide effective nanoporous framework, facilitate the electrons/ions transport, and generate effective synergistic effect of high conductivity from WO 3 and superior redox activity from CoWO 4 . As a result, the as-prepared CoWO 4 @WO 3 -1 electrodes exhibit a high area specific capacity of 578.6 mF cm -2 at the current density of 0.5 mA cm -2 and keep 98.38% capacity retention at 20 mA cm -2 over 30000 cycles. Additionally, the all-solid-state supercapacitors assembled with CoWO 4 @WO 3 -1 as cathodes and O v -NiMoO 4 as anodes, showing a maximum area energy density of 13.93 mWh cm -2 and power density of 6502.11 mW cm -2 , keeping outstanding cycling stability of 98.1% capacity retention over 20000 cycles.

Abstract:As a promising electrode material for supercapacitor, two dimensional (2D) porous cobaltite with spinel structure shows high specific capacitance, long cycle life and especially high energy density, which have great potential in electrochemical energy storage. In the present work, we demonstrated for the first synthesis of 2D porous ZnCo2O4 thin sheets (CQU-Chen-Zn-Co-O-2) with micro-mesoporous structure and high specific surface area of 89.63, 151.65 and 63.72 m(2).g(-1) through simple hydrothermal treatment of a mixed aqueous solution containing two kinds of transition metal nitrates (zinc nitrate (Zn(NO3)(2)) and cobalt nitrate (Co(NO3)(2))) and benzoic acid (C6H5COOH, BA) at 180, 200 and 220 degrees C for 12 h. The 3D nanoflake array assembled nanostructures of the ZnCo2O4 thin sheets facilitate the transmission of ions and electrons throughout the electrochemical testing process, which yield a higher specific capacitance of 3.07 F.cm(-2) at 1.04 mA.cm(-2) in a three-electrode system and a high energy density of 36.31 Wh.kg(-1) at a power density of 850 W.kg(-1) in an aqueous asymmetric supercapacitor (ZnCo2O4 thin sheets//active carbon (AC)). The results indicate that the 2D ZnCo2O4 thin sheets exhibt superior supercapacitor performance.
Preparation of WO3 Nano-material Negative Electrode for Asymmetric Supercapacitor

Abstract:Tungsten oxide nanomaterials were deposited on flexible conductive carbon fiber sheets by a simple thermal evaporation method and compared with conventional hydrothermal tungsten oxide nanomaterials. The morphology and composition of the product were characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope. The electrochemical properties of WO3 nano-electrode materials were tested by three-electrode system. The results showed that the area capacitance of WO3 nanoelectrode was 0.24F/cm2at a current density 10mA/cm(2), which was similar to that of tungsten oxide composite electrode prepared by complex evaporation plating process. After charging and discharging, the capacitance retention rate can be maintained about 80%, proving that WO3 nanocrystalline has large capacitance, good redox reversibility and electrochemical stability, and can be used as negative electrode material for asymmetric supercapacitors.
Structure modulated amorphous/crystalline WO3 nanoporous arrays with superior electrochromic energy storage performance

Abstract:In this work, porous bilayer hybrid WO3 nanoarray devices are constructed in which the active materials are composed of a crystalline WO3 nanobowl arrays layer modified by a nanoholey amorphous WO3 layer. The hybrid nanoarrays exhibit outstanding electrochromic performance with high color contrast in both visible and near infrared regions (93.9% at 633 nm, 89.6% at 1500 nm), fast response speed (3.0 s for coloring and 3.6 s for bleaching), exceptional cycling stability (95.4% contrast retention after 10,000 cycles) and decent coloring efficiency (92.3 cm2C-1) at low colored/bleached potentials (-1.0/1.0 V). In addition, the hybrid nanoarrays display high areal capacitance (47.4 mF/cm2), superior rate capability and cyclic stability (areal capacitance remains 84.0% after 2000 cycles). An electrochromic supercapacitor nanodevice is constructed based on the excellent electrochromic and capacitive performance of the hybrid nanoarrays. The enhanced electrochemical properties can be ascribed to the synergistic effect between the unique top amorphous layer structure and the underlying crystalline WO3 layer. In addition, oxygen partial pressure plays a crucial role in modulating the microstructure of the amorphous layer as well as electrochemical performance of the nanodevice. The obtained hybrid WO3 nanoarrays as well as the structure modulation promise great potential in developing high quality smart energy-efficient devices.

Abstract:WO3–x@Au@MnO2 core–shell nanowires (NWs) are synthesized on a flexible carbon fabric and show outstanding electrochemical performance in supercapacitors such as high specific capacitance, good cyclic stability, high energy density, and high power density. These results suggest that the WO3–x@Au@MnO2 NWs have promising potential for use in high-performance flexible supercapacitors.
