Abstract:Southeast Asian peatlands cover 0.2% of Earth's land surface, but store one-tenth of all peat soil carbon globally. Recent deforestation and drainage have destabilized these carbon stores, increasing carbon inputs to aquatic and atmospheric reservoirs. Here we investigate the impact of anthropogenic disturbance on the aquatic fate of peat dissolved organic carbon (DOC) within networks of drainage canals overlying disturbed peatlands. We measured microbial respiration rates alongside photochemical mineralization of DOC for canal waters collected across West Kalimantan, Indonesia, and found that both pathways lead to rapid DOC oxidation to carbon dioxide in the water column. Carrying out a systematic assessment of the controls on peat DOC processing, we identify key variables needed to predict daily rates and show that DOC oxidation may range from 15 to 310 mgC m −2 d −1 in drainage canals across Southeast Asia, depending on the water chemistry, hydrology and meteorology on any given day. DOC oxidation averaged 70 mgC m −2 d −1 under typical conditions, indicating that this process may reduce canal export of peat DOC by ~35%. Findings from this study demonstrate that drainage canal networks are a hotspot for terrestrial carbon loss following land disturbance and strongly regulate aquatic loss of peat carbon across the landscape.

Abstract:Underwater light availability is a crucial aspect for the ecological functioning of shallow water bodies. Light extinction from terrestrial inputs is a growing threat to these coastal habitats. The blended quasi-analytical algorithm (QAA) was extended for the derivation of colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) absorption coefficient along with other inherent optical properties (IOPs) from satellite observations for Southeast Asian waters. The contribution of these IOPs to diffuse attenuation of light (K d ) and penetration depth (Z d ) was investigated. A vulnerability assessment was performed to identify locations potentially threatened by poor light quality in Southeast Asian waters. Advection of peatland-influenced Sumatran coastal waters rich in organic matter (a g (400nm): 1.0-2.0m -1 ) and sediments (b bp (400nm): 0.5-1m -1 ) drive the spatial heterogeneity of Sunda shelf seawater. Photic zone depth, Z d (490nm), is year-round restricted to ≤5m for critically vulnerable Sumatran coastal waters (vulnerability index, VI>0.8). This critically vulnerable state is further extended towards the southern Malacca Strait, influencing the eastern Singapore Strait from June to September. The areas harbouring marine ecosystems in the shelf waters attain a higher threshold (VI=0.6-0.8), constraining the photosynthesis to depths ≤10m. A transformation of central Malacca Strait from not vulnerable (VI<0.2) to highly vulnerable (VI=0.6-0.8) state from June to September indicates poor light conditions. Further increases in CDOM and sediment inputs into these water columns, therefore, constitute a clear risk of reducing light availability, which may have damaging effects on the functioning of coastal habitats. This study underscores the need for a complete ecological risk assessment for Southeast Asia to aid in the effective management of marine ecosystems.

Abstract:Inland waters are highways of carbon and nutrient flows between the land and ocean. Aquatic environments integrate multiple sources and processes over space and time that influence ecosystem functionality. The complexity of these systems and their multiple interactions with the surrounding environment are conceptualised, but often lack empirical scrutiny that allows further understanding of how inland waters mobilise, transport, and utilise carbon and nutrients. This is particularly evident in tropical waters. Here, we apply advanced geochemical analyses of dissolved organic matter (DOM) composition in conjunction with algal pigment biomarkers, to determine the seasonal variability of organic matter production, processing and export for a tropical, floodpulse wetland, Tasik Chini (Malaysia). We identify two phases in the hydrological cycle: Phase 1 signifying a transition from the wet season with high suspended sediment and dissolved organic carbon concentrations. DOM is composed of humic substances, building blocks and lower molecular weight compounds. Towards the end this phase then are periods of increased water clarity and algal productivity. This is followed by Phase 2, which has a greater contribution of autochthonous DOM, composed of proteinaceous material, concomitant with lower dissolved nutrient concentrations, increased mixotrophic algae and emergent vegetation. Based on this framework, we highlight the role of such tropical wetland lakes as hydrological "bottlenecks," through a lentic/lotic switch that shifts aquatic transport of carbon and nutrients from lateral river continuum supply to flood pulses. We highlight the need to consider inherent biases of spatial and temporal scaling when examining freshwater ecosystems along the land-ocean aquatic continuum.

Abstract:Wetlands have long been recognized as a carbon sink, and a suggestion has been made that this may have served in the past several centuries to balance out releases from reduction of forests in the world. Cultural exploitation of wetland areas, such as excavation during exploration for fossil fuel and minerals, draining for farming of grain and fiber and production of animal protein, invariably results in the oxidation of the carbon storage sink. Destructive wetland alterations which reduce or remove the vegetative cover also decrease the fixation of atmospheric carbon, thus resulting in a net carbon release from wetlands. Wetland excavation for peat extraction is estimated to oxidize 472 metric tons of stored carbon per 1000 metric tons of dry peat combusted, while 375 metric tons of carbon are released from one hectare of mangrove swamp cleared and dug out for fish pond construction. Increasing and widespread alterations of this nature convert wetlands to a carbon source and could therefore play a significant role in the global cycle of carbon.

Abstract:The biological carbon pump is the process by which CO2 is transformed to organic carbon via photosynthesis, exported through sinking particles, and finally sequestered in the deep ocean. While the intensity of the pump correlates with plankton community composition, the underlying ecosystem structure driving the process remains largely uncharacterized. Here we use environmental and metagenomic data gathered during the Tara Oceans expedition to improve our understanding of carbon export in the oligotrophic ocean. We show that specific plankton communities, from the surface and deep chlorophyll maximum, correlate with carbon export at 150 m and highlight unexpected taxa such as Radiolaria and alveolate parasites, as well as Synechococcus and their phages, as lineages most strongly associated with carbon export in the subtropical, nutrient-depleted, oligotrophic ocean. Additionally, we show that the relative abundance of a few bacterial and viral genes can predict a significant fraction of the variability in carbon export in these regions.

Abstract:Rivers play an important role in global water and carbon cycling, but there are still large uncertainties concerning evaporation and aquatic photosynthesis. Here we combined measurements of water chemistry, isotopic compositions (i.e., <math>δDw</math>, <math>δ18Ow</math>, <math>δ13CDIC</math> <math>δ13CDIC</math> and <math>δ14CDIC</math>) and geographic characteristics (i.e., river width) to elucidate in-stream hydrological and biogeochemical processes across rivers in Hainan Island, China. The results showed that dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in river waters was largely of modern origin, with about 95% from contemporary biogenic sources based on an isotopic mass balance of <math>δ14CDIC</math>. Significant evaporation and aquatic primary production co-occurred in these tropical rivers with large amounts of water and DIC being rapidly turned over in the water column, altering the water cycle and the carbon balance. High rates of evaporation and aquatic primary production were observed in the headwater segments, with narrow river width but broad available reactive surface area at the air-water interface. The asymmetric aquatic photosynthesis at different river segments caused the spatial heterogeneities of dissolved solutes. The results suggest that the available reactive area at the water-air interface is responsible for synchronous water loss and dissolved carbon evolution in flat tropical rivers. This study provides evidence that intense evaporation and aquatic photosynthesis mainly occurred in headwater segments, which has implications for understanding global carbon cycling.

Abstract:Coastal wetlands are important for their ability to regulate global climate through the sequestration and long‐term storage of carbon. Accurate quantification of ecosystem‐specific carbon dynamics (including sequestration, storage, and fluxes) is needed to develop accurate carbon budgets that inform climate change mitigation. Most work to quantify carbon dynamics either use subsampling in core habitats or benefit transfers to upscale values. While these approaches are valuable, our understanding of carbon dynamics across ecosystem transitions and overall heterogeneity remains a critical gap in coastal ecosystems as boundaries are not always clear. In this study, we established transects across both mangrove and seagrass ecotones into adjacent tidal flats in Singapore to quantifying vegetation cover, soil carbon storage, and CO2 fluxes. Vegetation cover in all transitions and soil carbon storage in most transitions followed a decreasing sigmoidal pattern from vegetated to unvegetated portions, but differed in rate and width. CO2 fluxes followed a peak distribution in mangrove–tidal flat transitions with maximum values occurring within the mangroves and were correlated with pneumatophore density, while seagrasses saw a linear increase in CO2 fluxes from the seagrass to tidal flat. Seascape analysis of soil carbon showed site‐specific impacts that resulted in differences in carbon stocks (0%–8%) as well as the width of these transitions. This study highlights the importance of understanding ecotones to better account for edge effects, which can lead to the over or under estimation of carbon, and provides a needed step in increasing the accuracy of blue carbon assessments in these critical ecosystems.

Contrasting organic carbon respiration pathways in coastal wetlands undergoing accelerated sea level changes

Abstract:Carbon cycling in coastal wetland soil is controlled by a complex interplay between microbial processes and porewater chemistry that are often influenced by various external forcings like wind, river discharge, and sea-level changes, where most of the organic carbon is mineralized to its inorganic form by various aerobic and anaerobic respiration pathways. The export of this inorganic carbon (DIC) from coastal wetlands has long been recognized as a significant component of the global carbon cycle. The major objective of this work is to determine the relative contribution of various respiration pathways to seasonal DIC production in two contrasting marshes (brackish and salt). The DIC fluxes estimates for the brackish and salt marshes were found to range between 36.52 ± 5.81 and 33.98 ± 2.21 mmol m-2 d-1 in winter and 133.10 ± 102.60 and 82.37 ± 30.87 mmol m-2 d-1 during summer of 2020. For the brackish marsh, aerobic respiration and iron reduction were found to be the primary contributors to DIC production representing 17.91-35.21 % and 61.13-81.97 % of total measured organic matter (OM) respiration respectively. On the other hand, aerobic respiration and sulfate reduction were the primary contributors to DIC production in the salt marsh, accounting for 37.91-83.93 % and 15.87-62.04 % of the total measured OM respiration respectively. The Mississippi River Deltaic Plain experiences high relative sea level rise and expected to undergo rapid change in salinity regime in near future from additional changes in river discharge, proposed sediment diversion plans, and storm surge intensities. The current study represents the first attempt to concurrently estimate various respiration pathways in this region and more studies are needed to understand the trajectories of soil OM respiration pathways and its impact on coastal carbon cycling.

Abstract:Waterlogging and submergence are the major constraints to which wetland plants are subjected, with inevitable impacts on their physiology and productivity. Global warming and climate change, as driving forces of sea level rise, tend to increase such submersion periods and also modify the carbonate chemistry of the water column due to the increased concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere. In the present work, the underwater O2 fluxes in the leaves of two abundant Mediterranean halophytes were evaluated at different levels of dissolved CO2. Photosynthetic enhancement due to increased dissolved CO2 was confirmed for both Halimione portulacoides and Spartina maritima, probably due to high tissue porosity, formation of leaf gas films and reduction of the oxygenase activity of Rubisco. Enhancement of the photosynthetic rates in H. portulacoides and S. maritima was concomitant with an increase in energy trapping and transfer, mostly due to enhancement of the carboxylation reaction of Rubisco, leading to a reduction of the energy costs for carbon fixation. Transposing these findings to the ecosystem, and assuming increased dissolved CO2 concentration scenarios, the halophyte community displays a new ecosystem function, increasing the water column oxygenation and thus reinforcing their role as principal primary producers of the estuarine system.
Microbial diversity and community respiration in freshwater sediments influenced by artificial light at night

Abstract:An increasing proportion of the Earth's surface is illuminated at night. In aquatic ecosystems, artificial light at night (ALAN) may influence microbial communities living in the sediments. These communities are highly diverse and play an important role in the global carbon cycle. We combined field and laboratory experiments using sediments from an agricultural drainage system to examine how ALAN affects communities and alters carbon mineralization. Two identical light infrastructures were installed parallel to a drainage ditch before the start of the experiment. DNA metabarcoding indicated that both sediment communities were similar. After one was lit for five months (July–December 2012) we observed an increase in photoautotroph abundance (diatoms, Cyanobacteria ) in ALAN-exposed sediments. In laboratory incubations mimicking summer and winter (six weeks each), communities in sediments that were exposed to ALAN for 1 year (July 2012–June 2013) showed less overall seasonal change compared with ALAN-naive sediments. Nocturnal community respiration was reduced in ALAN-exposed sediments. In long-term exposed summer-sediments, we observed a shift from negative to positive net ecosystem production. Our results indicate ALAN may alter sediment microbial communities over time, with implications for ecosystem-level functions. It may thus have the potential to transform inland waters to nocturnal carbon sinks.

Diversity of Carbon Cycle-Linked Phyllosphere Microorganisms: A Key Driver of CO2 Flux in Macrophyte-Dominated Aquatic Systems

Abstract:Planktonic microorganisms have been recognized as important components in biogeochemical cycling in lakes. However, research into the impact of phyllosphere microorganisms, particularly those involved in carbon cycling, on CO2 fluxes in macrophyte-dominated lakes within the context of global environmental changes remains scarce. Here, by employing high-throughput sequencing techniques, we experimentally tested how nutrient enrichment, top-down effects of fish and increases in dissolved organic carbon (DOC) affect CO2 exchange flux at the water-air interface by altering the community structure and functioning of phyllosphere bacteria on macrophytes. We found that our mesocosm ecosystems exhibited a net absorption of CO2, but nutrient enrichment significantly decreased the absorption ability. Mantel tests and multiple regression modeling also showed that eutrophication-associated parameters (total nitrogen, total phosphorus and ammonium nitrogen), pH, and extinction coefficient are the key drivers influencing abundance of phyllosphere functional microorganisms. In addition, these experimental treatments significantly altered the composition, diversity and co-occurrence networks of carbon cycling-associated phyllosphere microorganisms, which impacted the CO2 flux. Structural equation models and linear regression further showed that the Shannon Index of phyllosphere functional microorganisms related to carbon cycling (rather than plant volume inhabited - PVI) had a significant positive impact on CO2 fixation. This means that environmental changes—especially eutrophication—may hinder carbon sequestration by decreasing the diversity of phyllosphere microorganisms rather than reducing the abundance of submerged macrophytes. This study increases our understanding of carbon cycling processes in aquatic environments from a management perspective by emphasizing the importance of protecting the diversity of phyllosphere microorganisms in macrophyte-dominated lakes.
Influence of Light on Particulate Organic Matter Utilization by Attached and Free-Living Marine Bacteria

Abstract:Light plays a central role on primary productivity of aquatic systems. Yet, its potential impact on the degradation of photosynthetically produced biomass is not well understood. We investigated the patterns of light-induced particle breakdown and bacterial assimilation of detrital C and N using 13C and 15N labeled freeze-thawed diatom cells incubated in laboratory microcosms with a marine microbial community freshly collected from the Pacific Ocean. Particles incubated in the dark resulted in increased bacterial counts and dissolved organic carbon concentrations compared to those incubated in the light. Light also influenced the attached and free-living microbial community structure as detected by 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. For example, Sphingobacteriia were enriched on dark-incubated particles and taxa from the family Flavobacteriaceae and the genus Pseudoalteromonas were numerically enriched on particles in the light. Isotope incorporation analysis by phylogenetic microarray and NanoSIMS (a method called Chip-SIP) identified free-living and attached microbial taxa able to incorporate N and C from the particles. Some taxa, including members of the Flavobacteriaceae and Cryomorphaceae, exhibited increased isotope incorporation in the light, suggesting the use of photoheterotrophic metabolisms. In contrast, some members of Oceanospirillales and Rhodospirillales showed decreased isotope incorporation in the light, suggesting that their heterotrophic metabolism, particularly when occurring on particles, might increase at night or may be inhibited by sunlight. These results show that light influences particle degradation and C and N incorporation by attached bacteria, suggesting that the transfer between particulate and free-living phases are likely affected by external factors that change with the light regime, such as time of day, water column depth and season.

Abstract:Water-logged peatlands store tremendous amounts of soil carbon (C) globally, accumulating C over millennia. As peatlands become disturbed by human activity, these long-term C stores are getting destabilized and ultimately released as greenhouse gases that may exacerbate climate change. Oxidation of the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) mobilized from disturbed soils to streams and canals may be one avenue for the transfer of previously stored, millennia-aged C to the atmosphere. However, it remains unknown whether aged peat-derived DOC undergoes oxidation to carbon dioxide (CO2) following disturbance. Here, we use a new approach to measure the radiocarbon content of CO2 produced from the oxidation of DOC in canals overlying peatland soils that have undergone widespread disturbance in Indonesia. This work shows for the first time that aged DOC mobilized from drained and burned peatland soils is susceptible to oxidation by both microbial respiration and photomineralization over aquatic travel times for DOC. The bulk radiocarbon age of CO2 produced during canal oxidation ranged from modern to ~1300 years before present. These ages for CO2 were most strongly influenced by canal water depth, which was proportional to the water table level where DOC is mobilized from disturbed soils to canals. Canal microbes preferentially respired older or younger organic C pools to CO2, and this may have been facilitated by the use of a small particulate organic C pool over the dissolved pool. Given that high densities of canals are generally associated with lower water tables and higher fire risk, our findings suggest that peatland areas with high canal density may be a hotspot for the loss of aged C on the landscape. Taken together, the results of this study show how and why aquatic processing of organic C on the landscape can enhance the transfer of long-term peat C stores to the atmosphere following disturbance.

Abstract:The capacity for coastal river networks to transport and transform dissolved organic matter (DOM) is widely accepted. However, climate‐induced shifts in stormwater runoff and tidal extension alter fresh and marine water source contributions, associated DOM, and processing rates of nutrients entering coastal canals. We investigate how time‐variable interactions among coastal water source contributions influence the concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), nutrients, and DOM composition in urban canals. We quantified the spatiotemporal variability of DOM quality and nutrient concentrations to determine contributions of tidal marine water, rainwater, stormwater runoff, and groundwater to three coastal urban canals of Miami, Florida (USA). We created a Bayesian Monte Carlo (BMC) mixing model using measurements of fluorescent DOM (fDOM), DOC concentrations, δ18O and δ2H isotopic signatures, and chloride (Cl‒). Fractional contributions of groundwater averaged 17% in the dry season and 26% at peak high tide during the subtropical wet season (September‐November). The canal‐to‐marine head difference (CMHD) was a primary driver of groundwater contributions to coastal urban canals and monthly patterns of fDOM/DOC. High tide (>1 m) and discharge events were found to connect canals to upstream sources of terrestrial DOM. Loading of terrestrially sourced DOC and DOM is pulsed to urban canals, shunted downstream and supplemented by microbially sourced DOM during the wet season at high tide. Overall, we demonstrate that a combined tracer approach with isotopes and fDOM can help identify groundwater contributions to coastal waterways and that autochthonous fDOM may prime the degradation of carbon or nutrients as the CMHD pushes inland. Interactions between elevated CO2 and warming could amplify DOC exports from peatland catchments

Abstract:Peatlands export more dissolved organic carbon (DOC) than any other biome, contributing 20% of all terrestrial DOC exported to the oceans. Both warming and elevated atmospheric CO2 (eCO2) can increase DOC exports, but their interaction is poorly understood. Peat monoliths were, therefore, exposed to eCO2, warming and eCO2 + warming (combined). The combined treatment produced a synergistic (i.e., significant interaction) rise in DOC concentrations available for export (119% higher than the control, interaction P < 0.05) and enriched this pool with phenolic compounds (284%). We attribute this to increased plant inputs, coupled with impaired microbial degradation induced by competition with the vegetation for nutrients and inhibitory phenolics. Root biomass showed a synergistic increase (407% relative to the control, P < 0.1 only), while exudate inputs increased additively. Phenol oxidase was suppressed synergistically (58%, interaction P < 0.1 only) and beta-glucosidase (27%) additively, while microbial nutritional stress increased (51%) additively. Such results suggest intensified carbon exports from peatlands, with potentially widespread ramifications for aquatic processes in the receiving waters.
Effects of conversion of coastal marshes to aquaculture ponds on sediment anaerobic CO 2 production and emission in a subtropical estuary of China

Abstract:The extensive conversion of carbon-rich coastal wetland to aquaculture ponds in the Asian Pacific region has caused significant changes to the sediment properties and carbon cycling. Using field sampling and incubation experiments, the sediment anaerobic CO 2 production and CO 2 emission flux were compared between a brackish marsh and the nearby constructed aquaculture ponds in the Min River Estuary in southeastern China over a three-year period. Marsh sediment had a higher total carbon and lower C:N ratio than aquaculture pond sediment, suggesting the importance of marsh vegetation in supplying labile organic carbon to the sediment. Conversion to aquaculture ponds significantly decreased sediment anaerobic CO 2 production rates by 69.2% compared to the brackish marsh, but increased CO 2 emission, turning the CO 2 sink (−490.8 ± 42.0 mg m −2 h −1 in brackish marsh) into a source (6.2 ± 3.9 mg m −2 h −1 in aquaculture pond). Clipping the marsh vegetation resulted in the highest CO 2 emission flux (382.6 ± 46.7 mg m −2 h −1 ), highlighting the critical role of marsh vegetation in capturing and sequestering carbon. Sediment anaerobic CO 2 production and CO 2 uptake (in brackish marsh) and emission (in aquaculture ponds) were highest in the summer, followed by autumn, spring and winter. Redundancy analysis and structural equation modeling showed that the changes of sediment temperature, salinity and total carbon content accounted for more than 50% of the variance in CO 2 production and emission. Overall, the results indicate that vegetation clearing was the main cause of change in CO 2 production and emission in the land conversion, and marsh replantation should be a primary strategy to mitigate the climate impact of the aquaculture sector.

Abstract:Tropical rivers are dynamic CO2 sources. Regional patterns in the partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) and relationships with other a/biotic factors in densely populated and rapidly developing river delta regions of Southeast Asia are still poorly constrained. Over one year, at 21 sites across the river system in the Red River Delta (RRD), Vietnam, we calculated pCO2 levels from temperature, pH, and total alkalinity and inter-linkages between pCO2 and phytoplankton, water chemistry and seasonality were then assessed. The smaller, more urbanized, and polluted Day River had an annual median pCO2 of 5,000 ± 3,300 μatm and the larger Red River of 2,675 ± 2,271 μatm. pCO2 was 1.6 and 3.2 times higher during the dry season in the Day and Red rivers respectively than the rainy season. Elevated pCO2 levels in the Day River during the dry season were also 2.4-fold higher than the median value (2,811 ± 3,577 μatm) of calculated and direct pCO2 measurements in > 20 sub/tropical rivers. By further categorizing the river data into Hanoi City vs. other less urban-populated provinces, we found significantly higher nutrients, organic matter content, and riverine cyanobacteria during the dry season in the Day River across Hanoi City. Forward selection also identified riverine cyanobacteria and river discharge as the main predictors explaining pCO2 variation in the RRD. After accounting for the shared effects (14%), river discharge alone significantly explained 12% of the pCO2 variation, cyanobacteria uniquely a further 21%, while 53% of the pCO2 variance was unexplained by either. We show that the urbanization of rivers deltas could result in increased sources of riverine pCO2, water pollution, and harmful cyanobacterial blooms. Such risks could be mitigated through water management to increase water flows in problem areas during the dry season.
