Abstract:ABSTRACTBecause freshwater covers such a small fraction of the Earth’s surface area, inland freshwater ecosystems (particularly lakes, rivers, and reservoirs) have rarely been considered as potentially important quantitative components of the carbon cycle at either global or regional scales. By taking published estimates of gas exchange, sediment accumulation, and carbon transport for a variety of aquatic systems, we have constructed a budget for the role of inland water ecosystems in the global carbon cycle. Our analysis conservatively estimates that inland waters annually receive, from a combination of background and anthropogenically altered sources, on the order of 1.9 Pg C y−1 from the terrestrial landscape, of which about 0.2 is buried in aquatic sediments, at least 0.8 (possibly much more) is returned to the atmosphere as gas exchange while the remaining 0.9 Pg y−1 is delivered to the oceans, roughly equally as inorganic and organic carbon. Thus, roughly twice as much C enters inland aquatic systems from land as is exported from land to the sea. Over prolonged time net carbon fluxes in aquatic systems tend to be greater per unit area than in much of the surrounding land. Although their area is small, these freshwater aquatic systems can affect regional C balances. Further, the inclusion of inland, freshwater ecosystems provides useful insight about the storage, oxidation and transport of terrestrial C, and may warrant a revision of how the modern net C sink on land is described.

Abstract:Inland waters comprise of rivers, streams, lakes, reservoirs, and ponds, and serve as active processing areas in the global carbon cycle. In total, inland waters emit 4.40 Pg C/year as carbon dioxide and methane, representing 73% of terrestrial carbon entering the systems from land. Anthropogenically driven climate and landscape changes, such as climate warming, precipitation, and land use conversion, are influencing the quantity and quality of terrestrial carbon transported to inland waters, the rates of internal processing in these systems, and its fate of burial, export, or emissions once in inland waters. Inland waters serve as important hydrological connections between the terrestrial landscape and oceans but are often overlooked in global carbon (C) budgets and Earth System Models. Terrestrially derived C entering inland waters from the watershed can be transported to oceans but over 83% is either buried in sediments or emitted to the atmosphere before reaching oceans. Anthropogenic pressures such as climate and landscape changes are altering the magnitude of these C fluxes in inland waters. Here, we synthesize the most recent estimates of C fluxes and the differential contributions across inland waterbody types (rivers, streams, lakes, reservoirs, and ponds), including recent measurements that incorporate improved sampling methods, small waterbodies, and dried areas. Across all inland waters, we report a global C emission estimate of 4.40 Pg C/year (95% confidence interval: 3.95–4.85 Pg C/year), representing a 13% increase from the most recent estimate. We also review the mechanisms by which the most globally widespread anthropogenically driven climate and landscape changes influence inland water C fluxes. The majority of these drivers are expected to influence terrestrial C inputs to inland waters due to alterations in terrestrial C quality and quantity, hydrological pathways, and biogeochemical processing. We recommend four research priorities for the future study of anthropogenic alterations to inland water C fluxes: (1) before‐and‐after measurements of C fluxes associated with climate change events and landscape changes, (2) better quantification of C input from land, (3) improved assessment of spatial coverage and contributions of small inland waterbodies to C fluxes, and (4) integration of dried and drawdown areas to global C flux estimates. Improved measurements of inland water C fluxes and quantification of uncertainty in these estimates will be vital to understanding both terrestrial C losses and the "moving target" of inland water C emissions in response to rapid and complex anthropogenic pressures.

Abstract:Estimates of sedimentary organic carbon burial fluxes based on inventory and isotope mass balance methods have been divergent. A new calculation of the isotope mass balance using a revised assessment of the inputs to the ocean-atmosphere system resolves the apparent discrepancy. Inputs include weathering of carbonate and old kerogen, geogenic methane oxidation, and volcanic and metamorphic degassing. Volcanic and metamorphic degassing comprise ≈23% of the total C input. Inputs from isotopically light OCpetro and CH4-geo drive the mean δ13C of the input to =-8.0 ± 1.9‰, notably lower than the commonly assumed volcanic degassing value. The isotope mass balance model yields a modern burial flux =15.9 ± 6.6 Tmol y-1. The impact of the mid-Miocene Climatic Optimum isotope anomaly is an integrated excess deposition ≈ 4.3 × 106 Tmol between 18 and 11 Ma, which is both longer and larger than estimates for the total degassing by the Columbia River Basalt eruptions, implying a complex carbon system response to large eruptive events. Monte Carlo evaluation finds that late Cenozoic net growth of the carbonate reservoir is very likely while net growth of the Corg reservoir is less certain but more likely than not. At present, subduction does not appear to keep up with net sedimentation and the overall masses of sedimentary carbonate and organic carbon are likely increasing. Growth in the sedimentary Corg reservoir implies oxidation of the surface environment and likely increases in atmospheric pO2.

Abstract:Streams, rivers, lakes, and other inland waters are important agents in the coupling of biogeochemical cycles between continents, atmosphere, and oceans. The depiction of these roles in global‐scale assessments of carbon (C) and other bioactive elements remains limited, yet recent findings suggest that C discharged to the oceans is only a fraction of that entering rivers from terrestrial ecosystems via soil respiration, leaching, chemical weathering, and physical erosion. Most of this C influx is returned to the atmosphere from inland waters as carbon dioxide (CO2) or buried in sedimentary deposits within impoundments, lakes, floodplains, and other wetlands. Carbon and mineral cycles are coupled by both erosion–deposition processes and chemical weathering, with the latter producing dissolved inorganic C and carbonate buffering capacity that strongly modulate downstream pH, biological production of calcium‐carbonate shells, and CO2 outgassing in rivers, estuaries, and coastal zones. Human activities substantially affect all of these processes.

Abstract:<p>Inland waters receive a significant quantity of carbon (C) from land. The fate of this C during transit, whether it is emitted to the atmosphere, accumulated in sediments, or transported to the ocean, can considerably reshape the landscape C balance. However, these different fates of terrestrial C are not independent but are instead linked via several catchment and aquatic processes. Thus, according to mass conservation, any environmental change inducing a shift in a particular C fate should come at the expense of at least one other fate. Nonetheless, studies that have investigated C emission, accumulation, and transport concertedly are scarce, resulting in fragmented knowledge of the role of inland waters in the global C cycle. Here, we propose a framework to understand how different C fates in aquatic systems are interlinked and covary under environmental changes. First, to explore how C fates are currently distributed in streams, rivers, reservoirs, and lakes, we compiled data from the literature and show that 'C fate allocation' varies widely both within and among inland water systems types. Secondly, we developed a framework that integrates C fates in any inland water system by identifying the key processes underlying their linkages. Our framework places the partitioning between the different C forms, and how this is controlled by export from land, internal transformations, and hydrology, as central to understanding C fate allocation. We argue that, by focusing on a single fate, studies could risk drawing misleading conclusions regarding how environmental changes will alter the role of inland waters in the global C cycle. Our framework thus allows us to holistically assess the consequences of such changes on coupled C fluxes, setting a foundation for understanding the contemporary and future fate of land derived C in inland water systems.</p>

Abstract:Annually integrated measurements of pCO(2) have demonstrated that seasonally stratified regions of temperate shelf seas can be an important sink of atmospheric CO2. A key process to support this sink is the transport of carbon from shelf seas to below the permanent pycnocline of the deep ocean. Using a hydrodynamic model simulation of the northwest European Continental shelf, we find that both the large scale circulation and frictional processes support the off-shelf transport of carbon sufficiently quickly to remove similar to 40% of the carbon sequestered by one growing season before the onset of the next. This transport is highly heterogeneous, with some regions being only weakly flushed. Only 52% of this exported carbon is transported below the permanent pycnocline, hence the shelf sea and open ocean carbon cycles are intrinsically coupled. Citation: Holt, J., S. Wakelin, and J. Abstract:This contribution reviews the role of the terrestrial-aquatic interface in the global carbon cycle. We highlight that carbon leakage through this interface has profound ramifications for the terrestrial carbon balance and for the anthropogenic CO2 budget. Our budget analysis identifies the need for an integrated process-based quantitative understanding of the terrestrial-aquatic interface that includes its response to anthropogenic perturbations. Complementary observational and modeling efforts in this direction are presented.

Abstract:Abstract Many inland waters exhibit complete or partial desiccation, or have vanished due to global change, exposing sediments to the atmosphere. Yet, data on carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions from these sediments are too scarce to upscale emissions for global estimates or to understand their fundamental drivers. Here, we present the results of a global survey covering 196 dry inland waters across diverse ecosystem types and climate zones. We show that their CO 2 emissions share fundamental drivers and constitute a substantial fraction of the carbon cycled by inland waters. CO 2 emissions were consistent across ecosystem types and climate zones, with local characteristics explaining much of the variability. Accounting for such emissions increases global estimates of carbon emissions from inland waters by 6% (~0.12 Pg C y −1 ). Our results indicate that emissions from dry inland waters represent a significant and likely increasing component of the inland waters carbon cycle.

Abstract:The Arctic Ocean plays a key role in the global carbon cycle and budget.This semi-closed ocean and its vast and shallow marginal shelf seas surrounded by widespread tundra makes it a unique area to study the carbon source, sink and budget, with consideration of land-ocean interaction and land and ocean as a whole.Over the last three decades because of global warming, sea ice has rapidly decreased.This has induced air-ice-sea-land multi-geosphere interaction that has greatly affected the carbon source and sink in the arctic areas.Such rapid change has not only led to the release of methane and carbon dioxide in degraded permafrost but has also altered the physical, biological and microbial carbon pumps.This process may be attributed to changes of freshwater input, water mixing and circulation, terrestrial fluvial transport, and nutrient supply to the Arctic Ocean.In this review paper, we discuss how global warming and rapid sea ice retreat affects the Arctic carbon sink and source, with a focus on the biological pump, terrestrial carbon input, and carbon burial in the Arctic Ocean. Abstract:Knowledge of carbon exchange between the atmosphere, land and the oceans is important, given that the terrestrial and marine environments are currently absorbing about half of the carbon dioxide that is emitted by fossil-fuel combustion. This carbon uptake is therefore limiting the extent of atmospheric and climatic change, but its long-term nature remains uncertain. Here we provide an overview of the current state of knowledge of global and regional patterns of carbon exchange by terrestrial ecosystems. Atmospheric carbon dioxide and oxygen data confirm that the terrestrial biosphere was largely neutral with respect to net carbon exchange during the 1980s, but became a net carbon sink in the 1990s. This recent sink can be largely attributed to northern extratropical areas, and is roughly split between North America and Eurasia. Tropical land areas, however, were approximately in balance with respect to carbon exchange, implying a carbon sink that offset emissions due to tropical deforestation. The evolution of the terrestrial carbon sink is largely the result of changes in land use over time, such as regrowth on abandoned agricultural land and fire prevention, in addition to responses to environmental changes, such as longer growing seasons, and fertilization by carbon dioxide and nitrogen. Nevertheless, there remain considerable uncertainties as to the magnitude of the sink in different regions and the contribution of different processes.

Abstract:Climate-sensitive northern cryosphere inland waters emit greenhouse gases (GHGs) into the atmosphere, yet their total emissions remain poorly constrained. We present a data-driven synthesis of GHG emissions from northern cryosphere inland waters considering water body types, cryosphere zones, and seasonality. We find that annual GHG emissions are dominated by carbon dioxide ( 1149.2 1004.8 1307.5 teragrams of CO 2 ; median Q 1 Q 3 ) and methane ( 14.2 10.1 18.5 teragrams of CH 4 ), while the nitrous oxide emission ( 5.4 − 1.4 12.2 gigagrams of N 2 O) is minor. The annual CO 2 –equivalent (CO 2 e) GHG emissions from northern cryosphere inland waters total 1.5 1.3 1.8 or 2.3 1.8 2.8 petagrams of CO 2 e using the 100- or 20-year global warming potentials, respectively. Rivers emit 64% more CO 2 e GHGs than lakes, despite having only one-fifth of their surface area. The continuous permafrost zone contributed half of the inland water GHG emissions. Annual CO 2 e emissions from northern cryosphere inland waters exceed the region's terrestrial net ecosystem exchange, highlighting the important role of inland waters in the cryospheric land-aquatic continuum under a warming climate.

Simulated Effects of Interactions Between Ocean Acidification,marine Organism Calcification, and Organic Carbon Export on Ocean Carbon and Oxygen Cycles

Abstract:Ocean acidification caused by oceanic uptake of anthropogenic carbon dioxide(CO 2 ) tends to suppress the calcification of some marine organisms. This reduced calcification then enhances surface ocean alkalinity and increases oceanic CO 2 uptake, a process that is termed calcification feedback. On the other hand, decreased calcification also reduces the export flux of calcium carbonate(Ca CO 3 ), potentially reducing Ca CO 3 -bound organic carbon export flux and CO 2 uptake, a process that is termed ballast feedback. In this study, we incorporate a range of different parameterizations of the links between organic carbon export, calcification, and ocean acidification into an Earth system model, in order to quantify the long-term effects on oceanic CO 2 uptake that result from calcification and ballast feedbacks. We utilize an intensive CO 2 emission scenario to drive the model in which an estimated fossil fuel resource of 5000 Pg C is burnt out over the course of just a few centuries. Simulated results show that, in the absence of both calcification and ballast feedbacks, by year 3500, accumulated oceanic CO 2 uptake is2041 Pg C. Inclusion of calcification feedback alone increases the simulated uptake by 629 Pg C(31%), while the inclusion of both calcification and ballast feedbacks increase simulated uptake by 449–498 Pg C(22–24%), depending on the parameter values used in the ballast feedback scheme. These results indicate that ballast effect counteracts calcification effect in oceanic CO 2 uptake. Ballast effect causes more organic carbon to accumulate and decompose in the upper ocean, which in turn leads to decreased oxygen concentration in the upper ocean and increased oxygen at depths. By year 2600, the inclusion of ballast effect would decrease oxygen concentration by 11% at depth of ca. 200 m in tropics. Our study highlights the potentially critical effects of interactions between ocean acidification, marine organism calcification, and Ca CO3-bound organic carbon export on the ocean carbon and oxygen cycles.

Abstract:Global carbon dioxide (CO2) evasion from inland waters (rivers, lakes, and reservoirs) and carbon (C) export from land to oceans constitute critical terms in the global C budget. However, the magnitudes, spatiotemporal patterns, and underlying mechanisms of these fluxes are poorly constrained. Here, we used a coupled terrestrial–aquatic model to assess how multiple changes in climate, land use, atmospheric CO2 concentration, nitrogen (N) deposition, N fertilizer and manure applications have affected global CO2 evasion and riverine C export along the terrestrial‐aquatic continuum. We estimate that terrestrial C loadings, riverine C export, and CO2 evasion in the preindustrial period (1800s) were 1,820 ± 507 (mean ± standard deviation), 765 ± 132, and 841 ± 190 Tg C yr−1, respectively. During 1800–2019, multifactorial global changes caused an increase of 25% (461 Tg C yr−1) in terrestrial C loadings, reaching 2,281 Tg C yr−1 in the 2010s, with 23% (104 Tg C yr−1) of this increase exported to the ocean and 59% (273 Tg C yr−1) being emitted to the atmosphere. Our results showed that global inland water recycles and exports nearly half of the net land C sink into the atmosphere and oceans, highlighting the important role of inland waters in the global C balance, an amount that should be taken into account in future C budgets. Our analysis supports the view that a major feature of the global C cycle–the transfer from land to ocean–has undergone a dramatic change over the last two centuries as a result of human activities.

Abstract:The geochemical disequilibrium of our planet is due mainly to carbon sequestration by marine organisms over geological time. Changes in atmospheric CO2 during interglacial‐glacial transitions require biological sequestration of carbon in the oceans. Nutrient‐limited export flux from new production in surface waters is the key process in this sequestration. The most common model for export flux ignores potentially important nutrient sources and export mechanisms. Export flux occurs as a result of biological processes whose complexity appears not to be accommodated by the principal classes of simulation models, this being especially true for food webs dominated by single‐celled protists whose trophic function is more dispersed than among the multicelled metazoa. The fashionable question concerning a hypothetical “missing sink” for CO2 emissions is unanswerable because of imprecision in our knowledge of critical flux rates. This question also diverts attention from more relevant studies of how the biological pump may be perturbed by climatic consequences of CO2 emissions. Under available scenarios for climate change, such responses may seem more likely to reinforce, rather than mitigate, the rate of increase of atmospheric CO2.

Abstract:Inland water bodies are observed as major sources of the emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) including carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O). This study shows that these entities (e.g. wetlands, constructed wetlands, reservoirs, lakes, ponds, and rivers) have a major contribution in GHG flux. However, understanding of the carbon dynamics of these water bodies is not well described. It was noticed that the emissions of GHGs from inland water bodies is a result of heavy supply of organic matters into them. Approximately 2.2–3.7% of the Earth's non-glaciated land area and inland waters are having almost similar amounts of carbon emission as also observed in case of both net terrestrial productivity and net oceanic uptake. Wetlands and lakes are among the most studied water bodies. However, efforts should be made to understand the emission dynamics from ponds and rivers as recent studies say these are also among the potent sources of GHG emissions in the atmosphere. This review paper aims to highlight and give an elaborate insight into the contribution of inland waters to the global carbon cycle along possible remediative measures.

Abstract:Observational reconstructions indicate a contemporary increase in coastal ocean CO 2 uptake. However, the mechanisms and their relative importance in driving this globally intensifying absorption remain unclear. Here we integrate coastal carbon dynamics in a global model via regional grid refinement and enhanced process representation. We find that the increasing coastal CO 2 sink is primarily driven by biological responses to climate-induced changes in circulation (36%) and increasing riverine nutrient loads (23%), together exceeding the ocean CO 2 solubility pump (41%). The riverine impact is mediated by enhanced export of organic carbon across the shelf break, thereby adding to the carbon enrichment of the open ocean. The contribution of biological carbon fixation increases as the seawater capacity to hold CO 2 decreases under continuous climate change and ocean acidification. Our seamless coastal ocean integration advances carbon cycle model realism, which is relevant for addressing impacts of climate change mitigation efforts.

Abstract:Inland lakes are crucial for processing, storing, and releasing carbon dioxide (CO2), and they play a significant role in the global carbon cycle and climate change. Studies have shown that inland lakes are mostly supersaturated in CO2, making them significant sources to the atmosphere. However, estimating CO2 fluxes from inland lakes is still challenging due to large variations in surface water CO2 partial pressure (pCO2). Submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) is widely found in aquatic ecosystems, especially in shallow lakes. However, their role in lake-wide carbonate chemistry has not been thoroughly investigated. Accurately measuring air-water CO2 exchange and understanding the environmental factors that control these fluxes in vegetated ecosystems are essential for reducing uncertainties in global CO2 emission estimates. In this study, high-resolution (3-h interval) field measurements were made along the nearshore of eastern Lake Taihu during the SAV growing seasons to examine their effects on surface water pCO2 and air-water exchange. Our results showed evident daily variations in water chemistry and air-water fluxes. Daytime air-water CO2 exchange switched from sinks in summer to sources in autumn. The vegetation sites were observed to be strong CO2 sources consistently at night. The density of aquatic vegetation was found to be positively correlated with the daily range of pCO2, highlighting their role in regulating surface water carbonate chemistry. Negative correlations were found between water depth and surface pCO2. These results highlight the importance of aquatic vegetation and daily variations in reducing uncertainties in carbon budgets of shallow aquatic systems.

Abstract:Climate change is driving a fundamental reorganization of the coastal zone, in which carbon-rich ecosystems are simultaneously migrating, accreting and submerging. In this Review, we discuss the geomorphic processes constraining soil carbon accumulation and the ecological processes constraining greenhouse gas emissions that together determine the net radiative forcing of the coastal landscape and the size of the coastal carbon sink. Sea level rise creates vertical and lateral accommodation space that potentially enhances soil carbon accumulation in marshes and mangroves. However, sea level rise and saltwater intrusion lead to ecosystem transitions that result in loss of existing carbon pools, altering the balance between carbon sequestration and greenhouse gas emissions. We propose that ecosystem reorganization results in large, but mostly offsetting, changes in radiative forcing. At the continental scale, losses in soil carbon sequestration and wood production are offset by reduced methane emissions associated with salinization of freshwater ecosystems. Nevertheless, climate effects on the coastal carbon sink remain largely studied within individual ecosystems. Future work is needed to determine the connectivity of carbon between ecosystems, changes in carbon accumulation and greenhouse gas emissions as ecosystem transitions occur, and the fate of carbon as it moves through the coastal landscape.
