Abstract:To reduce human efforts and burden on human intelligence in software-engineering activities, Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques have been employed to assist or automate these activities. On the other hand, human's domain knowledge can serve as starting points for designing AI techniques. Furthermore, the results of AI techniques are often interpreted or verified by human users. Such user feedback could be incorporated to further improve the AI techniques, forming a continuous feedback loop. We recently proposed cooperative testing and analysis including human-tool cooperation (consisting of human-assisted computing and human-centric computing) and human-human cooperation. In this paper, we present example software-engineering problems with solutions that leverage the synergy of human and artificial intelligence, and illustrate how cooperative testing and analysis can help realize such synergy.

Abstract:Industry 4.0 encompasses a new industrial revolution in which advanced manufacturing systems are interconnected with information technologies. These sophisticated data-gathering technologies have led to a shift toward smarter manufacturing processes involving the use of smart materials (SMs). The properties of SMs make them highly attractive for numerous biomedical applications. The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) enables them to be effectively used in the design of novel biomedical platforms to overcome shortcomings in the current biotechnology industry. This review summarizes recent advances in AI-assisted SMs for different healthcare products. The current challenges and future perspectives of AI-supported smart biosystems are also discussed, particularly with the regard to their applications in drug design, biosensors, theranostics, and electronic skins.

Abstract:Synthetic biology is a rapidly emerging field with broad underlying applications in health, industry, agriculture, or environment, enabling sustainable solutions for unmet needs of modern society. With the very recent addition of artificial intelligence (AI) approaches, this field is now growing at a rate that can help reach the envisioned goals of bio-based society within the next few decades. Integrating AI with plant-based technologies, such as protein engineering, phytochemicals production, plant system engineering, or microbiome engineering, potentially disruptive applications have already been reported. These include enzymatic synthesis of new-to-nature molecules, bioelectricity generation, or biomass applications as construction material. Thus, in the not-so-distant future, synthetic biologists will help attain the overarching goal of a sustainable yet efficient production system for every aspect of society.

The goal is to understand how AI technologies may advance the design process, encourage innovation, and produce more individualized and user-centric solutions. This study intends to shed light on the potential of AI as a catalyst for creativity and the ethical implications of AI-driven design by discovering overlapping ideas and methodologies between design thinking and AI. According to the research, AI can significantly influence the design process by eliminating tedious processes, improving user-centricity, and stimulating creativity. AI may support designers' decision-making, prototyping, and ideation processes, resulting in more creative and effective design solutions. Addressing bias in AI algorithms and data privacy is imperative to ensure ethical AI integration. Virtual reality, bio-design, and inclusive design are untapped areas where AI can be used.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence, which people originally modeled after human intelligence, has made significant advances in recent years. These advances have caused many to fear that machines will surpass human intelligence and dominate humans. Intelligence augmentation (IA) has the potential to turn the tension between the two intelligence types into a symbiotic one. Although IA has not gained momentum until recent years, the idea that machines can amplify human abilities has existed for many decades. Expanded from a panel discussion on Intelligence Augmentation at the 2020 International Conference of Information Systems (ICIS), we define IA in light of its history and evolution and classify IA based on its capabilities, roles, and responsibilities. Based on reviewing the IA literature in terms of research themes, enabling technology, and applications, we identify key research issues, challenges, and future opportunities.

Abstract:Drawing on the idea that brain development is a Darwinian process of ``evolution + selection'' and the idea that the current state is a local equilibrium state of many bodies with self-organization and evolution processes driven by the temperature and gravity in our universe, in this work, we describe an artificial intelligence system called the ``Synergetic Learning Systems''. The system is composed of two or more subsystems (models, agents or virtual bodies), and it is an open complex giant system. Inspired by natural intelligence, the system achieves intelligent information processing and decision-making in a given environment through cooperative/competitive synergetic learning. The intelligence evolved by the natural law of ``it is not the strongest of the species that survives, but the one most responsive to change,'' while an artificial intelligence system should adopt the law of ``human selection'' in the evolution process. Therefore, we expect that the proposed system architecture can also be adapted in human-machine synergy or multi-agent synergetic systems. It is also expected that under our design criteria, the proposed system will eventually achieve artificial general intelligence through long term coevolution.

Abstract:The field of synthetic biology benefits significantly from the application of artificial intelligence. I'd want to make three suggestions, which all have something to do with the past, the present, and the future of artificial intelligence. The works of Turing and von Neumann in biology and artificial systems from the past are exciting to investigate within the new framework of synthetic biology, particularly regarding the concepts of self-modification and self-replication as well as their links to the emergence and the bottom-up approach. The ongoing epistemological investigation into the emergence and the research being conducted on swarm intelligence, superorganisms, and biologically inspired cognitive architecture may result in discoveries on the potential uses of synthetic biology to explain mental processes. Finally, the current discussion on the future of artificial intelligence and the rise of superintelligence may point to some research trends for the future of synthetic biology and help to better define the boundary of concepts such as "life," "cognition," "artificial," and "natural," as well as their interconnections in theoretical synthetic biology. Abstract:Collectiveness is an important property of many systems--both natural and artificial. By exploiting a large number of individuals, it is often possible to produce effects that go far beyond the capabilities of the smartest individuals, or even to produce intelligent collective behaviour out of not-so-intelligent individuals. Indeed, collective intelligence, namely the capability of a group to act collectively in a seemingly intelligent way, is increasingly often a design goal of engineered computational systems--motivated by recent techno-scientific trends like the Internet of Things, swarm robotics, and crowd computing, just to name a few. For several years, the collective intelligence observed in natural and artificial systems has served as a source of inspiration for engineering ideas, models, and mechanisms. Today, artificial and computational collective intelligence are recognised research topics, spanning various techniques, kinds of target systems, and application domains. However, there is still a lot of fragmentation in the research panorama of the topic within computer science, and the verticality of most communities and contributions makes it difficult to extract the core underlying ideas and frames of reference. The challenge is to identify, place in a common structure, and ultimately connect the different areas and methods addressing intelligent collectives. To address this gap, this paper considers a set of broad scoping questions providing a map of collective intelligence research, mostly by the point of view of computer scientists and engineers. Accordingly, it covers preliminary notions, fundamental concepts, and the main research perspectives, identifying opportunities and challenges for researchers on artificial and computational collective intelligence engineering.

Abstract:This paper introduces Fusion Intelligence (FI), a bio-inspired intelligent system, where the innate sensing, intelligence and unique actuation abilities of biological organisms such as bees and ants are integrated with the computational power of Artificial Intelligence (AI). This interdisciplinary field seeks to create systems that are not only smart but also adaptive and responsive in ways that mimic the nature. As FI evolves, it holds the promise of revolutionizing the way we approach complex problems, leveraging the best of both biological and digital worlds to create solutions that are more effective, sustainable, and harmonious with the environment. Abstract:Big Data &Society, Volume 9, Issue 2, July-December 2022. There is little consensus on what artificial intelligence (AI) systems may or may not embrace. Although this may point to multiplicity of interpretations and backgrounds, a lack of conceptual clarity could thwart the development of common ground around the concept among researchers, practitioners and users of AI and pave the way for misinterpretation and abuse of the concept. This article argues that one of the effective ways to delineate the concept of AI is to compare and contrast it with human intelligence. In doing so, the article broaches the unique capabilities of humans and AI in relation to one another (human and machine tacit knowledge), as well as two types of AI systems: one that goes beyond human intelligence and one that is necessarily and inherently tied to it. It finally highlights how humans and AI can augment their capabilities and intelligence through synergistic human–AI interactions (i.e., human-augmented AI and augmented human intelligence), resulting in hybrid intelligence, and concludes with a future-looking research agenda.

Abstract:For decades, much software engineering research has been dedicated to devising automated solutions aimed at enhancing developer productivity and elevating software quality. The past two decades have witnessed an unparalleled surge in the development of intelligent solutions tailored for software engineering tasks. This momentum established the Artificial Intelligence for Software Engineering (AI4SE) area, which has swiftly become one of the most active and popular areas within the software engineering field. This Future of Software Engineering (FoSE) paper navigates through several focal points. It commences with a succinct introduction and history of AI4SE. Thereafter, it underscores the core challenges inherent to AI4SE, particularly highlighting the need to realize trustworthy and synergistic AI4SE. Progressing, the paper paints a vision for the potential leaps achievable if AI4SE's key challenges are surmounted, suggesting a transition towards Software Engineering 2.0. Two strategic roadmaps are then laid out: one centered on realizing trustworthy AI4SE, and the other on fostering synergistic AI4SE. While this paper may not serve as a conclusive guide, its intent is to catalyze further progress. The ultimate aspiration is to position AI4SE as a linchpin in redefining the horizons of software engineering, propelling us toward Software Engineering 2.0.

Abstract:The pervasive application of artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms is transforming many industries and aspects of the human experience. One very important industry trend is the move to convert existing human dwellings to smart buildings, and to create new smart buildings. Smart buildings aim to mitigate climate change by reducing energy consumption and associated carbon emissions. To accomplish this, they leverage artificial intelligence, big data, and machine learning algorithms to learn and optimize system performance. These fields of research are currently very rapidly evolving and advancing, but there has been very little guidance to help engineers and architects working on smart buildings apply artificial intelligence algorithms and technologies in a systematic and effective manner. In this paper we present B-SMART: the first reference architecture for autonomic smart buildings. B-SMART facilitates the application of artificial intelligence techniques and technologies to smart buildings by decoupling conceptually distinct layers of functionality and organizing them into an autonomic control loop. We also present a case study illustrating how B-SMART can be applied to accelerate the introduction of artificial intelligence into an existing smart building.
