Abstract:Additive manufacturing(AM) has been increasingly used in production. Because of its rapid growth, the efficiency and robustness of AM-based product development processes should be improved. Artificial intelligence(AI) is a powerful tool that has outperformed humans in numerous complex tasks. AI-enabled intelligent agents can reduce the workforce required to scale up AM production and achieve higher resource utilization efficiency. This study provides an introduction of AI techniques. Then,the current development of AI-enabled AM product development is investigated. Existing intelligent agents are used for problems in product design, process design and production stages. Based on the review, current research gaps and future research directions are identified. To guide future development of more efficient and comprehensive intelligent agents, a smart AM framework based on cloud-edge computing is proposed. Global consideration can be realized in the cloud environment, and a fast response can be achieved at the edge nodes.

Abstract:In situations requiring high levels of customization and limited production volumes, additive manufacturing (AM) is a frequently utilized technique with several benefits. To properly configure all the parameters required to produce final goods of the utmost quality, AM calls for qualified designers and experienced operators. This research demonstrates how, in this scenario, artificial intelligence (AI) could significantly enable designers and operators to enhance additive manufacturing. Thus, 48 papers have been selected from the comprehensive collection of research using a systematic literature review to assess the possibilities that AI may bring to AM. This review aims to better understand the current state of AI methodologies that can be applied to optimize AM technologies and the potential future developments and applications of AI algorithms in AM. Through a detailed discussion, it emerges that AI might increase the efficiency of the procedures associated with AM, from simulation optimization to in-process monitoring.

Researchers have investigated intricate structures with tailored properties and dynamic responsive behaviors by leveraging additive manufacturing (AM) methods, such as AI-guided 3D printing and 4D printing. This approach accelerates simulations, optimizes material selection, design of new structures with multi functionalities, and reduces time and costs. AI/ML techniques offer powerful tools for advancing the designs of high-performance composites and innovative functional materials. Abstract:The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms in materials design is revolutionizing the field of materials engineering thanks to their power to predict material properties, design de novo materials with enhanced features, and discover new mechanisms beyond intuition. In addition, they can be used to infer complex design principles and identify high-quality candidates more rapidly than trial-and-error experimentation. From this perspective, herein we describe how these tools can enable the acceleration and enrichment of each stage of the discovery cycle of novel materials with optimized properties. We begin by outlining the state-of-the-art AI models in materials design, including machine learning (ML), deep learning, and materials informatics tools. These methodologies enable the extraction of meaningful information from vast amounts of data, enabling researchers to uncover complex correlations and patterns within material properties, structures, and compositions. Next, a comprehensive overview of AI-driven materials design is provided and its potential future prospects are highlighted. By leveraging such AI algorithms, researchers can efficiently search and analyze databases containing a wide range of material properties, enabling the identification of promising candidates for specific applications. This capability has profound implications across various industries, from drug development to energy storage, where materials performance is crucial. Ultimately, AI-based approaches are poised to revolutionize our understanding and design of materials, ushering in a new era of accelerated innovation and advancement.

Abstract:Additive manufacturing of three-dimensional objects are now more and more realised through 3D printing, known as an evolutional paradigm in the manufacturing industry. Artificial intelligence is currently finding wide applications to 3D printing for an intelligent, efficient, high quality, mass customised and service-oriented production process. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of artificial intelligence in 3D printing. Before a printing task begins, the printability of given 3D objects can be determined through a printability checker using machine learning. The prefabrication of slicing is accelerated through parallel slicing algorithms and the path planning is optimised intelligently. In the aspect of service and security, intelligent demand matching and resource allocation algorithms enable a Cloud service platform and evaluation model to provide clients with an on-demand service and access to a collection of shared resources. We also present three machine learning algorithms to detect product defects in the presence of cyber-attacks. Based on the reviews on various applications, printability with multi-indicators, reduction of complexity threshold, acceleration of prefabrication, real-time control, enhancement of security and defect detection for customised designs are seen of good opportunities for further research, especially in the era of Industry 4.0.

This study intends to shed light on the potential of AI as a catalyst for creativity and the ethical implications of AI-driven design by discovering overlapping ideas and methodologies between design thinking and AI. According to the research, AI can significantly influence the design process by eliminating tedious processes, improving user-centricity, and stimulating creativity. AI may support designers' decision-making, prototyping, and ideation processes, resulting in more creative and effective design solutions. Abstract:During the last decade, additive manufacturing has become increasingly popular for rapid prototyping, but has remained relatively marginal beyond the scope of prototyping when it comes to applications with tight tolerance specifications, such as in aerospace. Despite a strong desire to supplant many aerospace structures with printed builds, additive manufacturing has largely remained limited to prototyping, tooling, fixtures, and non-critical components. There are numerous fundamental challenges inherent to additive processing to be addressed before this promise is realized. One ubiquitous challenge across all AM motifs is to develop processing-property relationships through precise, in situ monitoring coupled with formal methods and feedback control. We suggest a significant component of this vision is a set of semantic layers within 3D printing files relevant to the desired material specifications. This semantic layer provides the feedback laws of the control system, which then evaluates the component during processing and intelligently evolves the build parameters within boundaries defined by semantic specifications. This evaluation and correction loop requires on-the-fly coupling of finite element analysis and topology optimization. The required parameters for this analysis are all extracted from the semantic layer and can be modified in situ to satisfy the global specifications. Therefore, the representation of what is printed changes during the printing process to compensate for eventual imprecision or drift arising during the manufacturing process.

However, digital manufacturing has established itself in the current industrial revolution and it has slowed down quality control and inspection due to the different defects linked with it. Industry 4.0, the most recent industrial revolution, emphasizes the integration of intelligent production systems and current information technologies. As a result, deep learning has received a lot of attention and has been shown to be quite effective at understanding image data. This review aims to provide a cutting-edge deep learning application of the AM approach and application. This article also addresses the current issues of data privacy and security and potential solutions to provide a more significant dimension to future studies.
AI-driven image generation for enhancing design in digital fabrication: urban furnishings in historic city centres

Abstract:Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies, such as deep learning and neural networks, are being widely used across various sectors with an unprecedented acceleration in recent years, particularly in the field of image generation. Indeed, such innovation is becoming a paradigm-shifting technology in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) sector specifically for the generation of highly detailed and visually compelling images of architectural projects. The AI algorithms, trained on vast datasets, enable users to automatically generate realistic representations of buildings, interiors, and urban landscapes starting from a text string. The potential of these technologies is significant, but the current literature lacks well-defined processes for effectively utilizing these techniques to achieve implementable projects. This paper proposes a novel design approach based on AI-driven Image Generation to support design for digital fabrication, consisting of three steps. Firstly, the conceptual design is defined along with a set of keywords. Secondly, the application of AI in image generation allows designers to efficiently explore a multitude of design possibilities. The AI-based tools facilitate the automatic generation of diverse design variants, aiding professionals in evaluating different options and enhancing their visualizations. Thirdly, by leveraging a synergistic set of techniques including image processing, 3D CAD design, and additive manufacturing, it is possible to transform the images suggested by AI into an actual project that can be effectively fabricated. Finally, the potential of the proposed approach is applied to the case of urban furnishings in historic city centers in southern Italy.

Abstract:AbstractThe integration of emerging technologies into a complete digital thread promises to disrupt design and manufacturing workflows throughout the value chain to enable efficiency and productivity transformation, while unlocking completely new design freedom. A particularly appealing aspect involves the simultaneous design and manufacture of the macroscale structural topology and material microstructure of a product. Here we demonstrate such a workflow that digitally integrates: design automation – conception and automation of a design problem based on multiscale topology optimization; material compilation – computational geometry algorithms that create spatially-variable, physically-realizable multimaterial microstructures; and digital fabrication – fabrication of multiscale optimized components via voxel-based additive manufacturing with material jetting of multiple photo-curable polymers. We validate the digital design and manufacturing workflow by designing, fabricating, and testing a series of structures that illustrate capabilities, show how it empowers the exploitation of new design freedom, and even challenges traditional design principles relating form, structure, and function.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) is gaining strength, and materials science can both contribute to and profit from it. In a simultaneous progress race, new materials, systems, and processes can be devised and optimized thanks to machine learning (ML) techniques, and such progress can be turned into innovative computing platforms. Future materials scientists will profit from understanding how ML can boost the conception of advanced materials. This review covers aspects of computation from the fundamentals to directions taken and repercussions produced by computation to account for the origins, procedures, and applications of AI. ML and its methods are reviewed to provide basic knowledge of its implementation and its potential. The materials and systems used to implement AI with electric charges are finding serious competition from other information-carrying and processing agents. The impact these techniques have on the inception of new advanced materials is so deep that a new paradigm is developing where implicit knowledge is being mined to conceive materials and systems for functions instead of finding applications to found materials. How far this trend can be carried is hard to fathom, as exemplified by the power to discover unheard of materials or physical laws buried in data.

Safran Additive Manufacturing a technology platform attached to Safran Tech, Safran’s dedicated research center is aiming to support the widespread use of the additive manufacturing technology within the Group: first by recommending tools and standards while evaluating and validating the solutions through use cases, then by accompanying the companies of the Group in the deployment and use of these tools. Additive manufacturing of metal components is becoming more and more widespread in all sectors of industry. A major advantage of this technology is the geometry design freedom that allows the creation of optimized shapes according to the targeted function. It now starts to be used for the serial production of high-tech parts, particularly in the aeronautics and space industry. Another key benefit of using 3D printing technologies is the ability to reduce the weight, cost and complexity of parts production without sacrificing the reliability and durability of materials.

Abstract:Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing is a Direct Energy Deposition additive technology that uses the principle of wire welding to deposit layers of material to create a finished component. Nowadays, the boosting to transition into smart manufacturing systems and the increasingly computational resources allowed the development of intelligent applications for smart production systems for both in situ inspection and process parameter control. This paper aims to provide an review of applications developed using artificial intelligence techniques for Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing, with particular focus on defect detection software modules, feedback generation for control system and innovative control strategies as reinforcement learning to overcome problems related to model non-linearity and uncertainties.

Abstract:The improvement and the massive diffusion of additive manufacturing (AM) techniques have fostered the research of design methods to exploit at best the feature introduced by these solutions. The whole design paradigm needs to be changed taking into account new manufacturing capabilities. AM is not only an innovative method of fabrication, but it requires a new way to design products. Traditional practices of mechanical design are changing to exploit all potential of AM, new parameters and geometries could be realized avoiding technologies constrains of molding or machine tooling. The concept of “manufacturing for design” increasingly acquires greater importance and this means we have the chance to focus almost entirely on product functionality. The possibility to confer inhomogeneous properties to objects provides an important design key. We will study behavior and structure according to desired functions for each object identifying three main aspects to vary: infill type, external topology and shape, and material composition. In this research work, we focus on fused deposition modeling (FDM) technology of three dimensional (3D) printing that easily allows to explore all previous conditions. We present a new way to conceive design process in order to confer variable properties to AM objects and some guidelines to control properties of deformation and elasticity using classic infills. The ultimate aim is to apply new design rules provided by AM in the prosthetic field of lower limb amputees. The socket of the prosthesis represents a deformable interface between the residual limb and the artificial leg that must be optimized according to geometry and loads distribution of patient. An application for a transfemoral patient will be discussed.

Abstract:I-nteract is a cyber-physical system that enables real-time interaction with both virtual and real artifacts to design 3D models for additive manufacturing by leveraging on mixed reality technologies. This paper presents novel advances in the development of the interaction platform I-nteract to generate 3D models using both constructive solid geometry and artificial intelligence. The system also enables the user to adjust the dimensions of the 3D models with respect to their physical workspace. The effectiveness of the system is demonstrated by generating 3D models of furniture (e.g., chairs and tables) and fitting them into the physical space in a mixed reality environment.
