Abstract:Using the alumina powders with different average particle sizes as main raw materials, the tubular ceramic membrane support was prepared by extrusion method, and the membrane interlayer (thickness ~20 μm) and top layer (thickness ~5 μm) were deposited on the membrane support surface by dip coating process. In order to improve the separation performance of the membrane, it was modified with FAS, nano metal oxide or graphene oxide, respectively. During the oil/water treatment, the water flux of the modified membrane is higher about 27.8–43% than that of the original membrane. The modified membrane has higher oil rejection (99%) than that of the original membrane. The results show the modification has an important role on the oil/water separation performance of the membrane.
Fabrication of Catalytic Ceramic Nanofiber Membrane with High Permeability and Superior Catalytic Performance

Abstract:A novel ceramic nanofiber membrane (CNM), without an intermediate layer, was successfully developed onto the surface of a mullite fiber-based porous ceramic support using a sacrificial layer-assisted multiple dip-coating method. The CNM based on attapulgite exhibited a remarkable permeability of 1602.6L/(m2·h·bar), over 24 times higher than the ceramic nanofiber membrane with a support made from alumina granular particles. Moreover, a catalytic ceramic nanofiber membrane (Mn@CNM) was fabricated via an impregnation method. The Mn@CNM coupled catalytic ozonation process achieved a removal efficiency of up to 90.3% for degrading sulfamethoxazole (SMX). Furthermore, quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis were conducted to evaluate the production of different reactive oxygen species during the catalytic ozonation of SMX. The superior performance of Mn@CNM was ascribed to the high porosity and specific surface area of the CNM support, as well as the presence of a separation layer composed of interwoven APT nanofibers. These components created nano-sized pore structures, that enhanced the nano-confinement effect and improved the interaction between ROS and SMX molecules. In addition, the excellent redox cycles of Mn (III)/Mn (IV) facilitated the generation of ROS and degradation of SMX in catalytic ozonation systems. This study presents a novel method for creating CNM with excellent permeability and Mn@CNM with superior catalytic performance, enabling efficient removal of emerging contaminants from water.

Abstract:Membrane-based catalytic ozonation has recently attracted significant attention for its simultaneous boosted contaminant degradation and separation. In this work, catalytic ceramic nanofiber membranes ((MnFe0.05) @CNM) with MnFe dual-active site are prepared by anchoring FeOx nanoparticles onto Mn@CNM via an impregnation and in-situ precipitation method. The (MnFe0.05)@CNM coupled with catalytic ozonation was applied to the degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX), achieving a removal rate of up to 99.2 %. The catalytic degradation of SMX is verified by reactive oxygen species (ROS) quenching and EPR detection experiments, which shows that the 1O2, & sdot;OH and O2 & sdot;- are involved. Furthermore, (MnFe0.05)@CNM demonstrates superior catalytic stability, redox properties, and an abundance of acidic sites, as are revealed by H2-TPR and NH3-TPD analysis. The boosted performance is attributed to the synergistic catalysis by Mn and Fe bimetals under nanoconfinement effect of membrane pores through facilitated electron transfer between Mn2+, Mn3+, Mn4+, Fe2+, and Fe3+, and promoting the decomposition of ozone and the generation of ROS. The nano-confinement effect of (MnFe0.05)@CNM also reduces the mass transfer distance between ROS and SMX, promoting ROS to attack the SMX molecules. This study presents a novel approach to developing catalytic ceramic membranes for the enhanced degradation of emerging contaminants in water.

Abstract:Catalytic ceramic nanofiber membranes (Mn@CNMs) were prepared by anchoring Mn2O3 nanoparticles on the pits of attapulgite (APT) nanofibers via an impregnation and in-situ precipitation method. An integrated catalytic ozonation/membrane filtration process applying Mn@CNM was employed to degrade sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and the removal achieved up to 81.3% during a 7-h continuous filtration. The reactive oxygen species (ROS) quenching and radical detection experiments were conducted to determine the contribution of O-1(2), (OH)-O-center dot and O(2)(center dot- )towards the catalytic degradation of SMX. Moreover, Mn@CNM exhibited wide applicability for real water matrix and the total removal of various kinds of emerging contaminants in real hospital wastewater reached up to 98.5%. The excellent performances of Mn@CNM were attributed to the nano-confinement effect in the membrane layer. First, anchoring Mn2O3 nanoparticles on the pits of the APT surface suppressed the growth and aggregation of nanosized Mn2O3, providing abundant reactive sites for catalytic ozonation. Second, the interlaced APT nanofibers formed nano-sized network structures, where ROS and SMX were confined in close vicinity and ROS have more chances to attack SMX. This work provides a promising strategy for the preparation of catalytic ceramic membrane with high catalytic efficiency for degradation of emerging contaminants in water.

Abstract:In order to prepare the ceramic ultrafiltration membrane with high-performance, the modification method of nano-metal oxides was chosen. The 19 channel porous ceramic membrane and the ZrCl4 were chosen as the raw materials. The effects of ZrCl4 concentration and modification times on the pore-size, permeability and structure of ceramic membrane were studied in detalis. The result shows that the nano-ZrO2 was generated on the surface of the ceramic membrane after being modified and sintered. It can reduce the pore-size and the surface roughness of the ceramic membrane. Meawhile, this method can improve the permeability. Consequently, the ceramic ultrafiltration membrane has the pore-size of 75nm and the permeability of 1010.12L/m2·h·bar after sintering at 600°C for 2h with the optimized concentration of modify solution was 10g/L and the modified times was twice.
Preparation of a High-Performance Porous Ceramic Membrane by a Two-Step Coating Method and One-Step Sintering

Abstract:Hole defects and uneven membrane thicknesses can lead to poor performance, especially in the separation stability of ceramic membranes. This paper uses a one-step sintering method, which avoids hole defects and uneven membrane thicknesses, for the preparation of high-performance and defect-free ceramic membranes. For this purpose, two kinds of ceramic membrane slurry with high or low viscosities were prepared by alumina particles, as raw materials. Both the effects of the two coating process with a one-step coating method for low-viscosity slurry, and the two-step coating method with a high viscosity flush after a low viscosity coating, on the surface properties of a ceramic membrane, were studied in detail. The result shows that the properties of ceramic membranes can be improved by a two-step coating method, with a high viscosity flush after a low viscosity coating, A high-performance and defect-free ceramic membrane was obtained by one-step sintering at 1450 °C for 2 hr with 7 wt % solid content and a coating time of 11 s.

Abstract:Nanotechnology-enabled water treatment is a promising solution to the challenges in the current water treatment processes, particularly to the crisis of persistent and trace emerging contaminants. Taking the integrated process coupling membrane filtration with ozonation that has been developed and widely applied in field as examples, we analyze the scientific rationale of catalytic ceramic membranes and nano-effects in membrane pores, which are considered as nano-reactors. The confinement effects are analyzed from four aspects, including the high specific surface area in membrane nano-pores, enrichment of reactants and enhancement of reaction kinetics in nano-pores, organized arrangement of water molecules in nano-reactors and the role of electric double layer during reactions. For each aspect, we build the correlation between the confinement effects and the phenomena in membrane nano-pores. Moreover, we present opportunities for the future research on nanotechnology-enabled water treatment.

Abstract:Ceramic membranes have a highly porous structure and a high surface area, which provide suitable support for heterogeneous catalytic oxidation. In this study, as effective catalysts for ozonation, Mg, Ce, and Mn oxides were coated by co-precipitation onto a flat-sheet ceramic membrane to produce two catalytic ceramic membranes (CCMs), namely an Mg-Ce membrane and an Mg-Mn membrane. This technique combines ceramic membrane filtration with catalytic ozonation for advanced water and wastewater treatment. The CCM characterization showed that the metal oxide catalysts were well coated on the membrane surface and inside the membrane pores. Compared with non-catalytic ozonation, catalytic ozonation with CCMs was more effective for the degradation and removal of organic pollutants, including a dye as a model pollutant in water and residual organics in secondary wastewater effluent. At the same ozone dosage for ozonation coupled with membrane filtration, the organic removal efficiency was increased from approximately 30% for the ceramic membrane without the catalyst coating to over 80% for the CCM with the catalyst coating. Membrane catalytic ozonation also resulted in effective membrane fouling control during ultrafiltration of the secondary effluent. Based on the hydroxyl (OH) quenching test, ozonation with CCMs produced more OH free radicals than ozonation alone, which led to enhanced organic degradation. Moreover, catalytic ozonation in the membrane reactor played an effective role in mitigation of membrane fouling. Ceramic membrane-based catalytic ozonation can be used for effective removal of toxic and persistent organic pollutants from water and wastewater.

Abstract:To improve the efficiency of wastewater reclamation, a novel Co3O4@carbon nanotubes modified ceramic membrane (Co3O4@CNT-CM) was prepared in this work for simultaneous catalytic peroxymonosulfate (PMS) oxidation and filtration of secondary effluent. The synthesized Co3O4@CNT catalyst showed better dispersibility with more active sites exposed, and Co3O4@CNT-CM exhibited relatively smooth surface, higher permeate flux and excellent catalytic PMS ability. The antifouling and water purification performance of Co3O4@CNT-CM were systematically investigated in secondary effluent purification. With the dual effect of catalytic oxidation and filtration, the organic pollutants were observably reduced. Fluorescent components were also significantly removed, and more macromolecular substances were degraded into small molecular substances. The flux of Co3O4@CNT-CM was significantly improved, with the reversible and irreversible resistances decreased by 82.5% and 78.6%, individually. With respect to the fouling mechanism, the volume entering the stage of cake filtration dramatically increased. The prepared Co3O4@CNT-CM accelerated the generation of various active species for oxidative degradation of pollutants, thus improving the antifouling performance of membrane. These results demonstrated the application potential of Co3O4@CNT-CM for wastewater treatment and reclamation.

Abstract:Wastewater increases and water shortage crises have forced the rapid innovation of water reuse technologies. Ceramic membrane process (CM), as one of the key technologies for wastewater reclamation, can effectively light the current difficulties. However, membrane fouling and low retention rate are critical bottles that hinder its further application. Herein, we proposed yolk-shell Co3O4 spheres modified CM (CoHM-CM) activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to improve membrane filtration performance. The results showed that the synergistic effect of size exclusion of CM and spatial confinement of CoHM enhanced the collision between organic pollutants and active sites. CoHM-CM/PMS (30 mg CoHM loading combined with 0.5 mM PMS dosage) degraded 100 % of 10 mg/L phenol, bisphenol F and sulfamethoxazole, and 91.29 % of 5 mg/L carbamazepine at an instant of membrane filtration. This process efficiently removed secondary effluent organic matter and reduced membrane fouling resistance by more than 70 % in actual wastewater environments. Besides, the yolk-shell catalytic membrane had strong Co2+ regeneration capacity and chemical stability. It coupled PMS-generated sulfate radicals and singlet oxygen play a core role in increasing the membrane interface energy barrier and releasing the developing tendency of membrane pore blocking to severe cake layer filtration fouling. The results provided a new opportunity for wastewater remediation based on the yolk-shell modified membrane technology.

Abstract:Catalytic ceramic membranes display synergistic functions of catalytic oxidation and membrane filtration. In the current work, a comprehensive review on chemocatalytic ceramic membranes (CCCMs) applied in the field of removing organic pollutants from wastewater is presented. This work provides a first-time review focusing solely on the CCCMs in wastewater treatment. The structures and fabrication technologies of the CCCMs are described firstly, where six configurations and three technical approaches have been summarized. Next, four systems of CCCM, i.e., catalytic ozonation ceramic membrane (COCM), Fenton/catalytic wet peroxide oxidation ceramic membrane (F/CWPOCM), catalytic wet air oxidation ceramic membrane (CWAOCM) and catalytic persulfate oxidation ceramic membrane (CPOCM), are interpreted in terms of constitution elements, operation parameters and performance indicators. Then, the applications of these four systems are analyzed and discussed, in which the recent over 10-year work progress on CCCMs for pollutant removal is summarized. The prospects and concluding remarks on the CCCMs are presented lastly.

Abstract:In this work, we proposed a facile method for preparation of hierarchical porous ceramic membrane with energetic catalytic ozonation capability aiming at enhancing the performance of water treatment by using the combined ozone-membrane system. The strategy involved preparation of TiO2 macroporous membrane as a backbone and subsequently coating it with mesoporous Ti–Mn catalyst layer. Scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope and nitrogen sorption isotherms characterization demonstrated that the TiO2 membrane was composed of TiO2 nanorods with 200–400nm diameter, 5μm length, and mesoporous Ti–Mn layer was coated on the membrane surface uniformly with the thickness of about 100nm and pore size of 10nm. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-rays photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray diffractometer showed that Ti–Mn mixed oxide was spread into the inner voids of the membrane to form a hierarchical porous structure. Treating simulated wastewater (aqueous solution of dye Red-3BS and Aniline) it was found that hierarchical porous catalytic membrane exhibited high catalytic ozonation capability which resulted in an enhancement of membrane antifouling, separation and degradation of organic pollutants when the membrane was used as a key device in the combined membrane and ozone system.
Fabrication of Mn Oxide Incorporated Ceramic Membranes for Membrane Fouling Control and Enhanced Catalytic Ozonation of P -Chloronitrobenzene

Abstract:Mn oxide incorporated membranes were fabricated by incorporation of MnO2 particles prepared using different methods (C-MnO2, M-MnO2 and S-MnO2) on the surface of ceramic ultrafiltration membranes. Initially, the physicochemical properties of prepared MnO2 particles were systematically analyzed, and S-MnO2 exhibited the best dispersibility and smallest particle size. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy analyses demonstrated that the morphologies and topographies of the fabricated membranes were significantly affected by the preparation method of MnO2 particles. Subsequently, sodium alginate was employed to investigate the antifouling properties of the fabricated membranes. Although the incorporation of MnO2 particles increased membrane intrinsic resistance to varying degrees, M-MnO2 and S-MnO2 apparently mitigated both reversible and irreversible fouling in the presence of ozone, whereas C-MnO2 exerted a minor influence. Further, p-chloronitrobenzene was used to study the activity of fabricated membranes in catalytic ozonation. C-MnO2, M-MnO2 and S-MnO2 incorporated membranes exhibited enhanced activities with the removal efficiencies of 51.7%, 61.5% and 68.0%, respectively. The results indicated that the preparation method of S-MnO2 was most appropriate for the preparation of highly dispersive MnO2 particles to incorporate with ceramic membranes. Results in this study contribute to the fabrication of Mn oxide incorporated membranes with an efficient and convenient way, and provide relevant information on their actual application.
A CuO-modified ultrafiltration ceramic membrane inducing micro-nano bubble collapse to generate hydroxyl radicals for enhancing pollutant removal

Abstract:It is desirable to develop ceramic membranes with functional performances for wastewater treatment. This work developed a CuO-modified Al 2 O 3 ceramic membrane (CuO/Al 2 O 3 CM) via a sol-gel method. The coated CuO particles provided hydrophobicity and a high zero point of charge for CM, which could accumulate H + ions and form a liquid depletion layer on the membrane surface. When coupled with micro-nano bubbles (MNBs) in a neutral aqueous solution, the modified CM led to MNBs collapse through the accumulation of H + and uneven expansion. This collapse generated high temperature sites that activated the CuO particles, leading to the production of reactive oxygen species (ROSs) through the interaction of CuO and surface OH – . Therefore, the modified CM could remove model pollutants (methylene blue) in a stable and high efficiency (88.91 %) through inducing MNBs collapse. Besides, the tests on the pure water flux, reusability and leaching revealed the modified CM had good fouling resistance, stability, and environmental friendliness. Mechanism analysis showed the ROSs, mainly hydroxyl radicals (·OH), were responsible for the methylene blue degradation. This work provides valuable insights into the development of functionalized membranes that can induce MNB collapse to enhance pollutant removal in wastewater treatment.

Spinel-based ceramic membranes coupling solid sludge recycling with oily wastewater treatment

Abstract:Highly efficient and economic treatment of wastewater sludges and wastewaters in one way is a challenging issue in the water treatment field. Herein we present a waste-to-resource strategy for rational fabrication of low-cost ceramic membranes, which simultaneously addresses the treatment of heavy metal-laden sludges and the separation of oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions. A thermal conversion mechanism is proposed for complicated reactions between simulated nickel-laden wastewater sludge and bauxite mineral. In addition to full stabilization and recycling of heavy metal wastewater sludges, rational tailoring of ceramic membrane structures can also be realized to achieve high water flux and favorable mechanical and surface properties. With rational structure design, the tailored spinel-based ceramic membranes exhibited high rejection and high flux (7473 LMH·bar-1) simultaneously for separation of oily wastewater, outperforming other reported state-of-the-art ceramic membranes. The membrane fouling mechanism revealed the dominance of cake layer formation at low cross flow velocities, while a combined model of cake layer formation and pore blocking dominated membrane fouling at high cross-flow velocities. The proposed strategy can be potentially extended toward design of functional ceramic membranes derived from other heavy metal wastewater sludges and for other water treatment applications.

Abstract:Preparing 0.2μm, 3μm and 10μm three types of ceramic membrane with membranes pore size through solid state ion sintering process, and treat tanning process wastewater by them. Analyze hardness, sulfide content, ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) and CODCr before and after the wastewater treatment, calculate and compare their removal rates. Results indicated that tanning process wastewater was treat by plate-type ceramic membrane, the removal rate of wastewater hardness was over 63%, the removal rate of sulfide, CODCr and NH3-N could be achieved 83%. It can get satisfactory removal efficiencies, and meet the national discharge standard, also can be recycled in industry.
Incorporating catalytic ceramic membrane into the integrated process of in situ ozonation, membrane filtration and biological degradation: Enhanced performance and underlying mechanisms

Abstract:The integrated process comprising of in situ ozonation, ceramic membrane filtration and biologically active carbon filtration has a bright application prospect in wastewater reclamation to confront the global water crisis. Additionally, ceramic membranes of stronger catalytic activity are highly desirable so as to further increase the process cost-efficiency. In this study, a Mn-loaded catalytic membrane was tested by conducting pilot-scale experiments of the integrated process to measure its performance in enhancing pollutant removal and in alleviating membrane fouling. Lab-scale experiments were also conducted in order to investigate the underlying mechanisms in which the conventional Al2O3 membrane was used for comparison. Results showed that the integrated process with an incorporated catalytic membrane performed very well in that at a water flux as high as 80 L/m2/h and an ozone dosage of 5 mg/L, the treated water satisfied the guideline values for indirect potable reuse and membrane fouling was minimal. Reducing the ozone dosage to 4 mg/L can still achieve significant membrane fouling control effects, and maintain good effluent quality. Catalytic ozonation could lead to the generation of hydroxyl radicals, and the catalytic ozonation effect was much stronger when the catalytic membrane was used. Catalytic ozonation took place in both the membrane tank and membrane pores, with comparable contributions to the pollutant removal and membrane fouling control. Redundancy analysis (RDA) of membrane fouling characteristics showed that residual ozone concentration in membrane tank was an essential parameter and catalytic ozonation could be more effective in abating irreversible fouling than reversible fouling. RDA also confirmed that a lower ozone dosage would be sufficient for membrane fouling control when the catalytic membrane was used. This study evidently suggested the advantage of using catalytic ceramic membrane in the integrated process for efficient while economic treatment and reclamation of wastewater.

Mitigation Mechanism of Membrane Fouling in MnFeOx Functionalized Ceramic Membrane Catalyzed Ozonation Process for Treating Natural Surface Water

Abstract:In order to efficiently remove NOMs in natural surface water and alleviate membrane pollution at the same time, a flat microfiltration ceramic membrane (CM) was modified with MnFeOX (Mn-Fe-CM), and a coagulation–precipitation–sand filtration pretreatment coupled with an in situ ozonation-ceramic membrane filtration system (Pretreatment/O3/Mn-Fe-CM) was constructed for this study. The results show that the removal rates of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), specific ultraviolet absorption (SUVA) and NH4+-N by the Pretreatment/O3/Mn-Fe-CM system were 51.1%, 67.9% and 65.71%, respectively. Macromolecular organic compounds such as aromatic proteins and soluble microbial products (SMPs) were also effectively removed. The working time of the membrane was about twice that in the Pretreatment/CM system without the in situ ozone oxidation, which was measured by the change in transmembrane pressure, proving that membrane fouling was significantly reduced. Finally, based on the SEM, AFM and other characterization results, it was concluded that the main mitigation mechanisms of membrane fouling in the Pretreatment/O3/Mn-Fe-CM system was as follows: (1) pretreatment could remove part of DOC and SUVA to reduce their subsequent entrapment on a membrane surface; (2) a certain amount of shear force generated by O3 aeration can reduce the adhesion of pollutants; (3) the loaded MnFeOX with a higher catalytic ability produced a smoother active layer on the surface of the ceramic membrane, which was conducive in reducing the contact among Mn-Fe-CM, O3 and pollutants, thus increasing the proportion of reversible pollution and further reducing the adhesion of pollutants; (4) Mn-Fe-CM catalyzed O3 to produce ·OH to degrade the pollutants adsorbed on the membrane surface into smaller molecular organic matter, which enabled them pass through the membrane pores, reducing their accumulation on the membrane surface.

Abstract:Membrane separation is an effective solution for pollutant removal, however, achieving high permeability and antifouling ability remains a pressing challenge for its widespread application. In this study, a novel method of coating flat ceramic membranes (CMs) with a conductive film (Sb-SnO 2 ) was developed to enhance the filtration and antifouling performance of CMs when the membrane filtration was coupled with electrocoagulation. After comparing the parameters, including the film sheet resistance and pure water flux, with those of other coating methods (i.e., gel coating and immersion hydrolysis), a well-fixed conductive coating with optimal permeability and stability was generated using spray pyrolysis with a substrate ceramic membrane surface temperature of 475 °C, precursor concentration of 0.5 M (calculate as SnO 2 ), and spraying amount of 50 mL (120 cm 2 ), during membrane modification. Batch filtration experiments using wastewater from the mechanical industry demonstrated that the conductive ceramic membrane (CCM) cathode integrated with electrocoagulation at an electric field of 2.8 V/cm (3.0 mA/cm 2 ) achieved permeate fluxes that were 0.34, 0.70, 0.75 and 1.41 times higher than those of sole CM separation after four cycles. Moreover, the membrane separation process was dominated by the standard pore-blocking model, and its correlation coefficient decreased with the exertion of the electric field, indicating that membrane filtration fouling changed from irreversible to reversible. This CCM combined with electrocoagulation exhibited significant potential for alleviating membrane fouling and widespread application, and could act as a promising technology for industrial wastewater treatment.
