Abstract:Catalytic ceramic nanofiber membranes (Mn@CNMs) were prepared by anchoring Mn2O3 nanoparticles on the pits of attapulgite (APT) nanofibers via an impregnation and in-situ precipitation method. An integrated catalytic ozonation/membrane filtration process applying Mn@CNM was employed to degrade sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and the removal achieved up to 81.3% during a 7-h continuous filtration. The reactive oxygen species (ROS) quenching and radical detection experiments were conducted to determine the contribution of O-1(2), (OH)-O-center dot and O(2)(center dot- )towards the catalytic degradation of SMX. Moreover, Mn@CNM exhibited wide applicability for real water matrix and the total removal of various kinds of emerging contaminants in real hospital wastewater reached up to 98.5%. The excellent performances of Mn@CNM were attributed to the nano-confinement effect in the membrane layer. First, anchoring Mn2O3 nanoparticles on the pits of the APT surface suppressed the growth and aggregation of nanosized Mn2O3, providing abundant reactive sites for catalytic ozonation. Second, the interlaced APT nanofibers formed nano-sized network structures, where ROS and SMX were confined in close vicinity and ROS have more chances to attack SMX. This work provides a promising strategy for the preparation of catalytic ceramic membrane with high catalytic efficiency for degradation of emerging contaminants in water.

Abstract:Membrane-based catalytic ozonation has recently attracted significant attention for its simultaneous boosted contaminant degradation and separation. In this work, catalytic ceramic nanofiber membranes ((MnFe0.05) @CNM) with MnFe dual-active site are prepared by anchoring FeOx nanoparticles onto Mn@CNM via an impregnation and in-situ precipitation method. The (MnFe0.05)@CNM coupled with catalytic ozonation was applied to the degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX), achieving a removal rate of up to 99.2 %. The catalytic degradation of SMX is verified by reactive oxygen species (ROS) quenching and EPR detection experiments, which shows that the 1O2, & sdot;OH and O2 & sdot;- are involved. Furthermore, (MnFe0.05)@CNM demonstrates superior catalytic stability, redox properties, and an abundance of acidic sites, as are revealed by H2-TPR and NH3-TPD analysis. The boosted performance is attributed to the synergistic catalysis by Mn and Fe bimetals under nanoconfinement effect of membrane pores through facilitated electron transfer between Mn2+, Mn3+, Mn4+, Fe2+, and Fe3+, and promoting the decomposition of ozone and the generation of ROS. The nano-confinement effect of (MnFe0.05)@CNM also reduces the mass transfer distance between ROS and SMX, promoting ROS to attack the SMX molecules. This study presents a novel approach to developing catalytic ceramic membranes for the enhanced degradation of emerging contaminants in water.
Fabrication of Catalytic Ceramic Nanofiber Membrane with High Permeability and Superior Catalytic Performance

Abstract:A novel ceramic nanofiber membrane (CNM), without an intermediate layer, was successfully developed onto the surface of a mullite fiber-based porous ceramic support using a sacrificial layer-assisted multiple dip-coating method. The CNM based on attapulgite exhibited a remarkable permeability of 1602.6L/(m2·h·bar), over 24 times higher than the ceramic nanofiber membrane with a support made from alumina granular particles. Moreover, a catalytic ceramic nanofiber membrane (Mn@CNM) was fabricated via an impregnation method. The Mn@CNM coupled catalytic ozonation process achieved a removal efficiency of up to 90.3% for degrading sulfamethoxazole (SMX). Furthermore, quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis were conducted to evaluate the production of different reactive oxygen species during the catalytic ozonation of SMX. The superior performance of Mn@CNM was ascribed to the high porosity and specific surface area of the CNM support, as well as the presence of a separation layer composed of interwoven APT nanofibers. These components created nano-sized pore structures, that enhanced the nano-confinement effect and improved the interaction between ROS and SMX molecules. In addition, the excellent redox cycles of Mn (III)/Mn (IV) facilitated the generation of ROS and degradation of SMX in catalytic ozonation systems. This study presents a novel method for creating CNM with excellent permeability and Mn@CNM with superior catalytic performance, enabling efficient removal of emerging contaminants from water.
Catalytic Ceramic Nanofiber Membrane Coupled with Ozonation for Degradation of Sulfamethoxazole: Critical Parameters, Mechanisms and Applicability

Abstract:Catalytic ceramic nanofiber membrane (C-CNM) filtration coupled with catalytic ozonation process was applied for the removal of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in various water matrix. The C-CNM was made from attapulgite (APT) nanofibers with Mn2O3 nanoparticles anchored on the pits of APT. Up to 89% of SMX was degraded constantly during a 1-h continuous catalytic filtration with the experimental conditions (water flux = 20 LMH, [SMX]0 = 20 mg/L, [O3 (aq)]inf = 10.5 mg/L). The effects of permeate flux, membrane layer thickness, and the presence of co-existing ions and HA on the degradation efficiency of SMX by C-CNM filtration coupled with catalytic ozonation were studied. The results shows that the degradation of SMX occurred primarily in the membrane layer and the SMX removal increased with smaller fluxes and thicker membrane layer. Besides, the presence of Cl- and H2PO4- ions obviously inhibited SMX removal while the presence of HCO3- slightly enhanced SMX removal. The reactive oxygen species (ROS) that contributed to the removal of SMX were identified to be 1O2, .OH and O2c-by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis and quenching experiments. More importantly, C-CNM/ozone filtration system demonstrated wide applicability for the treatment of a variety of emerging organic contaminants and high removal efficiency of SMX even in real waters. This work promotes the engineering application of catalytic ceramic membrane coupling with advanced oxidation in the decontamination of emerging organic contaminants from water and wastewater.

Abstract:In this study the performance of catalytic ceramic membranes in activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) was investigated. The catalytic ceramic membrane (MnCM) integrated with Mn2O3 nanoparticles was fabricated by a solid-state sintering method. Physical and chemical properties of MnCM were characterized by SEM/EDX, XRD, BET, AFM and XPS. The MnCM/PMS system has shown excellent decontamination efficiencies (81-97% removal) for different EOCs. Acetaminophen (APAP) has been efficiently degraded by MnCM/PMS in different real water matrices and harsh water conditions. Based on results of quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analyses, non-radical pathway with singlet oxygen (O-1(2)) was the dominant ROS for the degradation of EOCs. The membrane pores in active layer acted as micro-reactors for the interaction among active sites, PMS, and EOCs. The MnCM/PMS system showed outstanding catalytic stability with high mineralization (TOC removal of similar to 65%) and negligible leaching of the manganese (1.3-1.5 mu g/L) in permeate. Hydroxylation and C-N bond cleavage were found to be the main degradation pathways of APAP by MnCM/PMS system. The MnCM prepared in this study with excellent performance could be a way forward for applications at large-scale or full-scale water systems suffering from heavy loads or trace amount of refractory organic compounds

Abstract:Nanotechnology-enabled water treatment is a promising solution to the challenges in the current water treatment processes, particularly to the crisis of persistent and trace emerging contaminants. Taking the integrated process coupling membrane filtration with ozonation that has been developed and widely applied in field as examples, we analyze the scientific rationale of catalytic ceramic membranes and nano-effects in membrane pores, which are considered as nano-reactors. The confinement effects are analyzed from four aspects, including the high specific surface area in membrane nano-pores, enrichment of reactants and enhancement of reaction kinetics in nano-pores, organized arrangement of water molecules in nano-reactors and the role of electric double layer during reactions. For each aspect, we build the correlation between the confinement effects and the phenomena in membrane nano-pores. Moreover, we present opportunities for the future research on nanotechnology-enabled water treatment.

Abstract:Catalytic oxidation of sulfite is critical for the fixation of sulfite in the flue gas desulfurization process and is also an essential step related to the treatment of air and water pollution. This work designed and prepared a nano-MnO2-functionalized hydrophobic ceramic membrane with a hydrophobic surface by a hydrothermal method. The chemical composition and the nanostructure of the prepared MnO2 composite membranes were characterized using several identification techniques (X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy). The results show that the prepared nano-MnO2 was sea urchin-like, the crystal form was β-MnO2, and it grows uniformly on the surface of the ceramic membrane. The molar ratios of Mn4+/Mn3+ and Olatt/Ototal were associated with high catalytic activity and enhanced with increasing preparation concentration. The catalytic ability of nano-MnO2 composite membranes to Na2SO3 was studied by the membrane dispersion-catalysis process. The catalytic efficiency with a loaded amount of 1.6–4.5 mg was 5.4–8.3 times higher than that without the catalyst. The free radical quenching experiment showed that SO5 •– was identified as the key free radical in the chain reaction. The oxidation kinetics of sulfite were investigated using a membrane dispersion reactor. The results showed that the catalyst, sulfite, and oxygen partial pressure reaction orders were 0.411, 0.243, and 0.640, respectively, and showed an apparent activation energy of 1.89 kJ·mol–1. Based on the three-phase reaction model analysis, sulfite oxidation was considered to be controlled by the mass transfer process of oxygen from the gas phase to the liquid phase.

Mitigation Mechanism of Membrane Fouling in MnFeOx Functionalized Ceramic Membrane Catalyzed Ozonation Process for Treating Natural Surface Water

Abstract:In order to efficiently remove NOMs in natural surface water and alleviate membrane pollution at the same time, a flat microfiltration ceramic membrane (CM) was modified with MnFeOX (Mn-Fe-CM), and a coagulation–precipitation–sand filtration pretreatment coupled with an in situ ozonation-ceramic membrane filtration system (Pretreatment/O3/Mn-Fe-CM) was constructed for this study. The results show that the removal rates of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), specific ultraviolet absorption (SUVA) and NH4+-N by the Pretreatment/O3/Mn-Fe-CM system were 51.1%, 67.9% and 65.71%, respectively. Macromolecular organic compounds such as aromatic proteins and soluble microbial products (SMPs) were also effectively removed. The working time of the membrane was about twice that in the Pretreatment/CM system without the in situ ozone oxidation, which was measured by the change in transmembrane pressure, proving that membrane fouling was significantly reduced. Finally, based on the SEM, AFM and other characterization results, it was concluded that the main mitigation mechanisms of membrane fouling in the Pretreatment/O3/Mn-Fe-CM system was as follows: (1) pretreatment could remove part of DOC and SUVA to reduce their subsequent entrapment on a membrane surface; (2) a certain amount of shear force generated by O3 aeration can reduce the adhesion of pollutants; (3) the loaded MnFeOX with a higher catalytic ability produced a smoother active layer on the surface of the ceramic membrane, which was conducive in reducing the contact among Mn-Fe-CM, O3 and pollutants, thus increasing the proportion of reversible pollution and further reducing the adhesion of pollutants; (4) Mn-Fe-CM catalyzed O3 to produce ·OH to degrade the pollutants adsorbed on the membrane surface into smaller molecular organic matter, which enabled them pass through the membrane pores, reducing their accumulation on the membrane surface.

Abstract:In the present study, MnMe oxide (Me = Fe, Co, Ce) were in situ embedded on the surface and inside micropores of membranes by redox reaction to fabricate novel catalytic ceramic membranes. The synergistic effect of membrane filtration and catalytic ozonation were evaluated towards atrazine degradation. MnCe-CM owned the best performance with 99.99% atrazine removal in 40 min among four catalytic membranes because of the oxygen vacancies created by Ce3+/Ce4+ and Mn2+/Mn3+. MnCe-CM was subsequently chosen to explore the optimized operating conditions with a finding of ozone concentration 0.8 mg/min and pH 7. As the catalysts were successfully embedded on the surface and inside the micro-pores of MnCe-CM, the catalytic ozonation took place both on the surface and inside micropores. The reactions on the surface and inside micropores were proved very effective considering that the high specific surface provided sufficient reaction sites while the confined space facilitated the contact between •OH and the reactants. In addition, atrazine degradation pathways were proposed based on the identified byproducts. The reaction sites and the biotoxicity evaluation were calculated by density function theory (DFT) and Toxicity Estimation Software Tool (T.E.S.T), respectively. The present study provides a novel MnCe-CM with dual functions of filtration and catalytic ozonation and outlines the synergistic effect of separation and catalytic ozonation.

MnO 2 @CS-UF/PMS system could effectively remove fluorescent organics, and the removal rates of I - V region were 36.3 %, 72.3 %, 67.7 %, 73.5 % and 71.4 %, respectively. The permeance decline of MnO 2 @CS-UF was also effectively alleviated, with irreversible and reversible resistances reduced by 61.0 % and 23.2 % than UF membranes, individually. High-valent manganese-oxo species and singlet oxygen played a leading role in contaminants elimination, whereas radical oxidation acted as auxiliary contributors. New insights into Co3O4-carbon nanotube membrane for enhanced water purification: Regulated peroxymonosulfate activation mechanism via nanoconfinement

Abstract:Co-based peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation system with fascinating catalytic performance has become a promising technology for water purification, but it always suffers from insufficient mass transfer, less exposed active sites and toxic metal leaching. In this work, a carbon nanotube membrane confining Co3O4 inside (Co3O4-in-CNT) was prepared and was coupled with PMS activation (catalytic membrane process) for sulfamethoxazole (SMX) removal. Compared with counterpart with surface-loaded Co3O4 (Co3O4-out-CNT), the Co3O4-in-CNT catalytic membrane process exhibited enhanced SMX removal (99.5% vs. 89.1%) within residence time of 2.89 s, reduced Co leaching (20 vs. 147 μg L-1) and more interestingly, the nonradical-to-radical mechanism transformation (from 1O2 and electron transfer to SO4•- and •OH). These phenomena were ascribed to the nanoconfinement effect in CNT, which enhanced mass transfer (2.80 × 10-4 vs. 5.98 × 10-5 m s-1), accelerated Co3+/Co2+ cycling (73.4% vs. 65.0%) and showed higher adsorption energy for PMS (cleavage of O-O bond). Finally, based on the generated abundant reactive oxygen species (ROS), the seven degradation pathways of SMX were formed in system.
Layered metal oxides loaded ceramic membrane activating peroxymonosulfate for mitigation of NOM membrane fouling

Abstract:Catalytic membrane can achieve sieving separation and advanced oxidation simultaneously, which can improve the effluent water quality while reducing membrane fouling. In this study, the catalytic membranes (M 2+ ) were fabricated by loading different binary layered metal oxides (M 2+ Al-LMO: MnAl-LMO, CuAl-LMO and CoAl-LMO) on alumina ceramic substrate membranes (AM) via vacuum filtration followed by calcination process. The performance of the catalytic membranes was investigated by filtering actual surface water. It was found that the presence of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) could mitigate membrane fouling effectively, as evidenced by the increase of normalized flux from 0.28 to 0.62 in /PMS system, from 0.25 to 0.52 in /PMS system, and from 0.22 to 0.31 in /PMS system, respectively. Correspondingly, the exhibited the highest removal for UV 254 , TOC and fluorescent components in the surface water, followed by and Quenching effect of phenol and furfuryl alcohol proposed the surface-bound radicals and singlet oxygen were the major reactive oxygen species in the M 2+ /PMS systems. Interface free energy calculations confirmed the in-situ PMS activation could enhance the repulsive interactions between NOM and the membranes, thus mitigating membrane fouling. This work provides an original but simple strategy for catalytic ceramic membrane preparation and new insights into the mechanism of membrane fouling mitigation in catalytic membrane system.

In this study, as effective catalysts for ozonation, Mg, Ce, and Mn oxides were coated by co-precipitation onto a flat-sheet ceramic membrane to produce two catalytic ceramic membranes (CCMs), namely an Mg-Ce membrane and an Mg-Mn membrane. This technique combines ceramic membrane filtration with catalytic ozonation for advanced water and wastewater treatment. The CCM characterization showed that the metal oxide catalysts were well coated on the membrane surface and inside the membrane pores. Compared with non-catalytic ozonation, catalytic ozonation with CCMs was more effective for the degradation and removal of organic pollutants, including a dye as a model pollutant in water and residual organics in secondary wastewater effluent. At the same ozone dosage for ozonation coupled with membrane filtration, the organic removal efficiency was increased from approximately 30% for the ceramic membrane without the catalyst coating to over 80% for the CCM with the catalyst coating. Membrane catalytic ozonation also resulted in effective membrane fouling control during ultrafiltration of the secondary effluent. Based on the hydroxyl (OH) quenching test, ozonation with CCMs produced more OH free radicals than ozonation alone, which led to enhanced organic degradation. Moreover, catalytic ozonation in the membrane reactor played an effective role in mitigation of membrane fouling. Ceramic membrane-based catalytic ozonation can be used for effective removal of toxic and persistent organic pollutants from water and wastewater.

Fe-Mn Bimetallic Oxide-Enabled Facile Cleaning of Microfiltration Ceramic Membranes for Effluent Organic Matter Fouling Mitigation via Activation of Oxone

Abstract:Membrane fouling caused by effluent organic matters (EfOM) remains a major challenge in wastewater reclamation. Herein, we report a promising catalytic microfiltration ceramic membrane (CM) that features with ∼20 μm thickness of Fe-Mn bimetallic oxide (Mn1.5FeO6.35) active layer coating on the α-Al2O3 membrane base (α-Al2O3@Mn1.5FeO6.35 CM), which enables fantastic mitigation of irreversible EfOM fouling via in situ Oxone activation. Modeling results indicated that complete and standard pore blocking dominated an initial fouling mechanism on the α-Al2O3@Mn1.5FeO6.35 CM, followed by a cake mode as the fouling evolution. Critically, the cake fouling layer was effectively removed through a facile on-line cleaning with Oxone aqueous solutions, resulting in rapid flux restoration. The mechanism was dominated by radical cleaning pathways, and hydroxyl radicals (HO·) played a critical role in reducing EfOM fouling over other reactive species (e.g., sulfate radicals (SO4 · –) and singlet oxygen (1O2)). A key feature of as-prepared α-Al2O3@Mn1.5FeO6.35 CM is the favorable slightly basic pH cleaning conditions (∼pH 10), restricting Fe and Mn leaching and maximizing the membrane-sustained activity and durability. Hence, this study highlights the robust cleaning capability of α-Al2O3@Mn1.5FeO6.35 CM toward EfOM fouling and proposes a new strategy in developing environmentally friendly catalytic CMs for wastewater reclamation.

Abstract:Catalytic ozonation technology has attracted copious attention in water purification owing to its favorable oxidative degradation of pollutants and mitigation of membrane fouling capacity. However, its extensive industrial application has been restricted by the low ozone utilization and limited mass transfer of the short-lived radical species. Interlayer space-confined catalysis has been theoretically proven to be a viable strategy for achieving high catalytic efficiency. Here, a two-dimensional MnO2-incorporated ceramic membrane with tunable interspacing, which was obtained via the intercalation of a carbon nanotube, was designed as a catalytic ozonation membrane reactor for degrading methylene blue. Benefiting from the abundant catalytic active sites on the surface of two-dimensional MnO2 as well as the ultralow mass transfer resistance of fluids due to the nanolayer confinement, an excellent mineralization effect, i.e., 1.2 mg O3(aq) mg−1 TOC removal (a total organic carbon removal rate of 71.5%), was achieved within a hydraulic retention time of 0.045 s of pollutant degradation. Further, the effects of hydraulic retention time and interlayer spacing on methylene blue removal were investigated. Moreover, the mechanism of the catalytic ozonation employing catalytic ozonation membrane was proposed based on the contribution of the Mn(III/IV) redox pair to electron transfer to generate the reactive oxygen species. This innovative two-dimensional confinement catalytic ozonation membrane could act as a nanoreactor and separator to efficiently oxidize organic pollutants and enhance the control of membrane fouling during water purification.

Abstract:The combination of membrane filtration with catalytic ozonation was established in this study, to develop in-situ self-cleaning of membrane fouling and micropollutants degradation. Herein, a novel CuMn2O4/g-C3N4 catalytic ceramic membrane (CG/CM) was fabricated and a catalytic ozonation membrane reactor (COMR) was established. Firstly, powder catalyst CuMn2O4/g-C3N4 was synthesized under two steps and its parameters was optimized (urea (10.0 g) and CuMn2O4 (0.2 g) was combined and calcinated under 350 °C for 2.0 h) for the degradation of micropollutant benzophenone-4 (BP-4) and elimination of toxic byproduct bromate (BrO3 −). Secondly, the active catalytic ceramic membrane was fabricated, where the thickness, roughness, and hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity of CuMn2O4/g-C3N4 deposition on CG/CM was adjustable by changing the number of coating procedures. As increasing the coating times, the thickness increased but the roughness and hydrophobicity decreased, which was first reported in catalytic membrane synthesis process and was favored for interface catalytic ozonation. Therefore, the obtained CG/CM showed good in-situ self-cleaning for membrane fouling, BP-4 degradation, and BrO3 − elimination through interface catalytic ozonation, as sodium alginate (SA) selected as the model probe. The concentration of ozone and transmembrane pressure (TMP) showed a significant influence on the CG/CM performance. The best operation parameters were optimized as [ozone] = 20 mg/L, TMP = 0.2 bar, and cross flow velocity = 0.0845 m/s, achieving that the normalized flux recovering to 87% and more three times increasing of BP-4 degradation rate than that in sole ozonation. The better bromate elimination performance in COMR was first reported. Furthermore, the concentration effects of SA, bovine serum albumin, and BP-4 on the performance were studied. This represents a promising strategy for developing catalytic ceramic membranes coupled with catalytic ozonation for water treatment.

Abstract:Heterogeneous catalyst reuse and the effectiveness of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 )-based advanced oxidation processes under near-neutral conditions remain an obstacle in wastewater remediation. Herein, we put forward a versatile catalytic membrane with Cu-doped MnO active layer anchoring on the polydopamine-modified electrospinning polyvinylidene fluoride (PDA@PVDF) base. The Cu-MnO@PDA@PVDF membrane was conferred admirable sulfamethoxazole (SMX) reduction (over 90% within 90 min) and clogging alleviation (relative flux recovery to 0.98) capabilities via in situ H 2 O 2 activation at pH 8, which was slightly affected by actual water background. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and trapping tests unveiled the joint contribution of • OH, O 2 •− and 1 O 2 , with • OH exerting the supreme role in SMX oxidation. The inherent characteristics of dual Mn-Cu centers on the membrane surface for facilitation of electron transfer, H 2 O 2 adsorption and barrierless dissociation to • OH were further elucidated by electrochemical measurements and density functional theory (DFT) computation. Comprehensively, this study proposes a facile procedure and insights into engineering catalytic membrane coupled H 2 O 2 strategy for refractory organic treatment at ambient conditions.

Abstract:The catalytic membrane, which combines the physical barrier and peroxymonosulfate (PMS)/visible light (Vis)-induced catalytic oxidation functionalities while minimizing biofouling, exhibits great promise as a material for the removal of persistent organic pollutants from wastewater. In this study, three catalytic membranes composed of 2D/2D hybrid g-C 3 N 4 /kaolinite with nitrogen vacancies and modified with different iron species (γ-FeOOH nanosheets, Fe 2 O 3 quantum dots, and Fe single atoms) were prepared via vacuum filtration. Evaluation of the catalytic performance demonstrated that γ-FeOOH nanosheets-modified sample exhibited a relatively higher water flux (258.13 L m -2 h -1 ). In contrast, Fe single atom-modified sample achieved improved bisphenol A removal efficiency (97.39%) under the PMS/Vis synergetic system. Interestingly, the Fe 2 O 3 quantum dots-modified sample exhibited the highest rate constant based on the retention time. Furthermore, the Fe single atom-modified sample showed consistent removal of bisphenol A, reaching nearly 100% during continuous-flow operation for 180 min, while maintaining a flux of approximately 200 L m -2 h -1 . Quenching experiments suggested that • O 2 − , 1 O 2 , and h + were the most important oxidizing species involved in the reaction of the three membranes. Statistical analysis indicated that variations in the average pore size of the membranes were key factors influencing the catalytic activity. Overall, this study offers an in-depth insight into the systematic and quantitative assessment of 2D/2D hybrid g-C 3 N 4 /layered clay-based catalytic membranes for wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) in the aquatic systems are of growing concerns that could undermine drinking water safety. In this study, manganese (III) oxide (Mn2O3) based catalytic ceramic membrane (CCM) was developed for the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS), and its applicability has been tested in degrading the ten different EDCs (including bisphenol analogs (BPs)) in drinking water. The CCMs were synthesized at different calcination temperatures i.e., 850, 950, and 1150 °C. Optimal performance of CCMs/PMS was achieved at a higher degree of calcination. The CCMs/PMS has shown a potential to effectively degrade the EDCs at higher concentrations (mg/L) to trace levels (ng/L). The CCMs/PMS system adopted a non-radical pathway of degrading the EDCs through the extensive generation of singlet oxygen (1O2), as confirmed using quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. 1O2-based oxidation process showed special selectivity for the decontamination of phenols and bisphenols. The long-term performance of CCMs/PMS showed good stability in degradation of the EDCs in drinking water, also with efficient mineralization (TOC removal >55%) and negligible release of Mn (0.004 wt%Mn/min). CCMs/PMS system also showed high potential in improving water quality by reducing the disinfection byproducts (DBPs) formation potential, highest recorded for bromodichloromethane (CHCl2Br, 100%) and lowest for dichloroacetic acids (TCAA, ∼50%). The study provided a highly efficient catalytic ceramic membrane based advanced oxidation process (AOPs) for effective degradation multiple of EDCs in drinking water, and the findings of this work can be a baseline for full-scale water treatment applications.
