Abstract:Electromagnetic invisible devices usually designed by transformation optics are rather complicated in material parameters and not suitable for general applications. Recently, a topology optimized cloak based on level-set method was proposed to realize nearly perfect cloaking [Fujii et al., Appl. Phys. Lett. 102, 251106 (2013)]. In this work, we experimentally implemented this idea and fabricated a unidirectional cloak with a relative large invisible region made of single dielectric material. Good cloaking performance was verified through measurement which consists very well with numerical simulation. The advantages and disadvantages of this optimization method are also discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, we report the fabrication of a homogeneous anisotropic invisibility carpet cloak that works for transverse magnetic (TM) wave in free space. Linear coordinate transformation is employed for the design of the dielectric tensors, and the cloak is made of Al2O3 slabs with a Teflon background. The triangular invisible region has a height of 32.4 mm (one third of the height of the whole device) and a width of 200 mm. The cloaking effect is examined in far-field free-space transmission experiments by measuring the scattering parameters. The results show our device has very good cloaking performance in a wide frequency range from 8 to 12 GHz.

Abstract:In this paper the authors report that perfect invisibility cloaking could be achieved in a medium designed by a non-Euclidean conformal transformation. Wave behaviors could be controlled as well as the cloaking device configured by the general Euclidean approach dealing with the full Maxwell's equations. The cloaking medium proposed here is totally isotropic and can work in waves without the geometry and polarization limits; thus it is very promising for applications to build a device to hide large objects.

Abstract:In this paper, we report a fabrication of a three-dimensional (3D) carpet cloak that works for any polarization in free space. Two-dimensional (2D) conformal mapping is first employed and the 3D structure is generated by a rotation of the 2D cloak. The structure of the cloak is hole-in-dielectric. The triangular invisible region has a height of 36 mm (one third of the height of the whole device) and a width of 240 mm. The cloaking effect is examined in free space by measuring the scattering parameters. The results show our device has very good cloaking performance in a wide frequency range from 4 to 10 GHz.

Abstract:Magnetic invisible cloaking has been previously demonstrated but only limited to objects with rotational geometries either in spherical or cylindrical shapes, for which the classic analytical bilayer scheme could be strictly applied to design the hiding coat. In this work, we show that a quasi-static cloaking effect could be achieved for irregular objects, e.g., metals with sharp edges, using a numerical optimization scheme. In the quasi-static limit, it is unambiguously proved that the disturbance of the irregular geometries could be well compensated by the inhomogeneous distribution of the soft ferromagnetic (FM) layer either in permeability values or in shapes under the framework of a bilayer cloak. An FM mesh coat with a constant thickness of 0.5 mm was successfully engineered to meet the specific requirements. Experimentally, good cloaking performance with a field disturbance of less than 0.5% has been achieved for a 2 × 2 × 5 cm3 brass bar in a wide frequency range from ∼10 to 250 kHz. A commercial metal scanner was also applied to verify the practical potential. The general strategy to hide almost arbitrary objects was discussed in the end. In principle, the numerical conformal coat engineered by the composite material proposed here could be broadly extended for objects with various geometries.

Abstract:Invisibility cloak has attracted the attention of electromagnetic researchers due to its magical properties and marvelous potential applications in the field of applied physics and engineering. Recently, a multiphysics cloaking has put the new spirit into this field. In this paper, we introduce a device, composed of three shells and each shell works as an invisibility cloak for a specific physical phenomenon. Following this technique, a number of cloaks with different implementation approaches can be proposed for distinct physical phenomena in a single structure. Here, we restrict ourselves for the case of two physical behaviors: thermal and electrical conductivities. This type of multi-cloaking structure can be best used in mechanically designed structures to better control heating and electrical effects.

Abstract:We present the design, fabrication and performance test of a quasi three-dimensional carpet cloak made of normal dielectric in the microwave regime. Taking advantage of a simple linear coordinate transformation we design a carpet cloak with homogeneous anisotropic medium and then practically realize the device with multilayer of alternating normal dielectric slabs based on the effective medium theory. As a proof-of-concept example, we fabricate the carpet cloak with multilayer of FR4 dielectric slabs with air spacing. The performance of the fabricated design is verified through full-wave numerical simulation and measurement of the far-field scattering electromagnetic waves in a microwave anechoic chamber. Experimental results have demonstrated pronounced cloaking effect in a very broad band from 8 GHz to 18 GHz (whole X and Ku band) due to the low loss, non-dispersive feature of the multilayer dielectric structure.

Abstract:A general procedure to design objects that are intrinsically invisible (without the necessity of an external cloak) has not been demonstrated so far. Here we propose a flexible method to design such self-cloaked objects by uncoupling the scattered waves from the incident radiation via judiciously manipulating the scattering potential of the object. We show that such a procedure is able to yield optical invisibility for any arbitrarily shaped object within any specified frequency bandwidth by simply employing isotropic nonmagnetic dielectric materials, without the usage of loss or gain material. The validity of the design principle has been verified by direct experimental observations of the spatial electric field profiles and scattering patterns at the microwave regime. Our self-cloaking strategy may have profound implications especially in noninvasive probing, cloaked sensor applications, and scattering-free non-Hermitian optics based systems.

Abstract:Carpet cloaking is proposed to hide an object on a dielectric half-space from electromagnetic (EM) detection. A two-dimensional conformal transformation specified by an analytic function is utilized for the design. Only one nonsingular material parameter distribution suffices for the characterization. The cloaking cover situates on the dielectric half-space, and consists of a lossless upper part for EM wave redirection and an absorbing bottom layer for inducing correct reflection coefficient and absorbing transmission. Numerical simulations with Gaussian beam incidence are performed for verification.

Abstract:A new type of cloak is discussed: one that gives all cloaked objects the appearance of a flat conducting sheet. It has the advantage that none of the parameters of the cloak is singular and can in fact be made isotropic. It makes broadband cloaking in the optical frequencies one step closer.

Practical Realization of Transformation-Optics Designed Invisibility Cloak Through Layered Structures

Abstract:The idea of cloaking objects from the observation by electromagnetic (EM) fields based on the recently proposed transformation optics requires anisotropic space-dependent inhomogeneous medium to construct the cloak. To reduce the design complexity and realization difficulty, in this paper we present an approach of constructing the invisibility cloak through layered structures of isotropic homogeneous media. We will show the practical design procedure based on the effective medium theory. Two examples, one for a cylindrical cloak and the other for a ground plane cloak, will be demonstrated and the cloaking performances will be verified through full-wave EM numerical calculations. The proposed cloaks are composed of normal dielectric multilayers, thus can lead to easy experimental demonstration of non-magnetic cloak in the frequency range from microwave to optical.

Abstract:Through a particularly chosen coordinate transformation, we propose an optical carpet cloak that only requires homogeneous anisotropic dielectric material. The proposed cloak could be easily imitated and realized by alternative layers of isotropic dielectrics. To demonstrate the cloaking performance, we have designed a two-dimensional version that a uniform silicon grating structure fabricated on a silicon-on-insulator wafer could work as an infrared carpet cloak. The cloak has been validated through full wave electromagnetic simulations, and the nonresonance feature also enables a broadband cloaking for wavelengths ranging from 1372 to 2000 nm.
Spontaneous Nambu-Goldstone Currents Generation Driven by Mismatch

Abstract:We review recent progress of understanding and resolving instabilities driven by mismatch between the Fermi surfaces of the pairing quarks in 2-flavor color superconductor. With the increase of mismatch, the 2SC phase exhibits chromomagnetic instability as well as color neutral baryon current instability. We describe the 2SC phase in the nonlinear realization framework, and show that each instability indicates the spontaneous generation of the corresponding pseudo Nambu-Golstone current. The Nambu-Goldstone currents generation state covers the gluon phase as well as the one-plane wave LOFF state. We further point out that, when charge neutrality condition is required, there exists a narrow unstable LOFF (Us-LOFF) window, where not only off-diagonal gluons but the diagonal 8-th gluon cannot avoid the magnetic instability. In this Us-LOFF window, the diagonal magnetic instability cannot be cured by off-diagonal gluon condensate in the color superconducting phase.

Abstract:The existence of a non-electrically-small scatterer adjacent to the source can severely distort the radiation and lead to a poor electromagnetic compatibility. In this work, we use a conducting hollow cylinder to shield a cylindrical scatterer. The cylinder is shelled with a single dielectric layer enclosed by an electromagnetic metasurface. The relationship between the scattering field and the surface impedance is derived analytically. By optimizing the Fourier expansion coefficients of the surface impedance distribution along ϕ-dimension, the scattering cross-section can be effectively reduced. This unidirectional cloaking method is valid for both TM/TE and non-TM/TE incident field and is not limited to a plane-wave incident field. The accuracy and effectiveness of the method are verified by four cloaking scenarios in microwave regime. We demonstrate that with the surface impedance obtained by the proposed method, a metasurface is designed with physical subwavelength structures. We also show a cloaking scenario under a magnetic dipole radiation, which is closer to the case of a realistic antenna. This method can be further applied to cloaking tasks in terahertz and optical regimes.
Simplified Ground Plane Invisibility Cloak by Multilayer Dielectrics

Abstract:Most implementations of the ground plane invisibility cloak are based on the isotropic design through the quasi-conformal transformation. However recent theoretical analysis predicts the unavoidable lateral shift of the scattering fields associated with these cloaks making them detectable. In this paper, we propose an alternative method to design the ground plane invisibility clock with electromagnetic beam modulation blocks through simple coordinate transformation discussed in our previous work. The ground plane cloak obtained with the rigorous transformation optics possesses moderate anisotropic distributions of material parameters, but results in no lateral shift of the scattering fields. To realize the design, a possible scheme is suggested by discretizing the ground plane cloak to several homogeneous sub-blocks. These sub-blocks can be realized with multilayer isotropic dielectrics with alignment angles that are determined by the effective medium theory. Thus the non-magnetic ground plane invisibility cloak can be constructed by several multilayered normal dielectrics aligned in different angles. The performance of the proposed cloak and its practical implementation is validated by full-wave electromagnetic simulations with both near field distributions and far field scattering patterns under different EM wave incident angles. The proposed cloak is composed of normal dielectric multilayers, thus can leads to easy experimental demonstration of non-magnetic ground plane cloak in the frequency range from microwave to optical.
Observation of 2D Omnidirectional Invisibility from an Electrically Large Cluster under TE Polarization.

Abstract:The concept of perfect invisibility in free space implies an object neither reflects nor refracts optical waves coming from arbitrary directions, regardless of its shape and size. An optimal solution to realize such a peculiar phenomenon is to tune the constitutive parameters of the object to be identical to air. In particular, to render zero extinction from an existing object by covering some additional structures, is of importance for practical implementations, which is challenging. Here, we demonstrate and propose that a thin metallic wire can be tuned to be air-like under TE polarization, with the aid of an external enclosure. This is achieved through a precise dispersion engineering with independently controllable electric and magnetic responses. Consequently, an electrically large cluster composed of multiple thin wires can be safely hidden in free space, without any macroscopic cloaking structure, which is verified by full-wave simulations and experiments. The measured results on an electrically large airplane-like sample show the excellent performance of 2D omnidirectional invisibility at the designed frequency. This proposed metamaterial would be helpful in enhancing the mechanical stability, electrical conduction, and heat dissipation of a device (or system) by extra wires (or pipes), without disturbing its electromagnetic characteristics.
Carpet Cloak with Photonic Crystal Shield That Permits Information Exchange

Abstract:Carpet cloaks designed by optical transformation usually include a perfect shield, which exclude the electromagnetic fields from the under cloaked region. Due to the shield, observers in the cloaked area cannot “see” the outside. In this article, we report a flat carpet cloak that permits information exchange with outer environment by using one- or two-dimensional photonic crystal structures as substitutes for the perfect shield. The lateral shifts at the reflecting surface of the effective shields, which make the carpet cloak detectable, are considered and calculated with a Gaussian beam illumination. In order to counteract the lateral shifts, we redesign the parameters of the cloaking slab based on the coordinate transformation. Good agreements have been obtained between the adjusted carpet and ideal carpet with a perfect shield.

Abstract:The concept of an invisibility cloak is a fixture of science fiction, fantasy, and the collective imagination. However, a real device that could hide an object from sight in visible light from absolutely any viewpoint would be extremely challenging to build. The main obstacle to creating such a cloak is the coupling of the electromagnetic components of light, which would necessitate the use of complex materials with specific permittivity and permeability tensors. Previous cloaking solutions have involved circumventing this obstacle by functioning either in static (or quasi-static) fields where these electromagnetic components are uncoupled or in diffusive light scattering media where complex materials are not required. In this paper, we report concealing a large-scale spherical object from human sight from three orthogonal directions. We achieve this result by developing a three-dimensional (3D) homogeneous polyhedral transformation and a spatially invariant refractive index discretization that considerably reduce the coupling of the electromagnetic components of visible light. This approach allows for a major simplification in the design of 3D invisibility cloaks, which can now be created at a large scale using homogeneous and isotropic materials.
Multi-directional cloak design by all dielectric unit-cell optimized structure

Abstract:In this manuscript, we demonstrate the design and experimental proof of an optical cloaking structure which multi-directionally conceals a perfectly electric conductor (PEC) object from an incident plane wave. The dielectric modulation around the highly reflective scattering PEC object is determined by an optimization process for multi-directional cloaking purposes. And to obtain the multi-directional effect of the cloaking structure, an optimized slice is mirror symmetrized through a radial perimeter. Three-dimensional (3D) finite-difference time-domain method is integrated with genetic optimization to achieve cloaking design. In order to overcome the technological problems of the corresponding devices in the optical range and to experimentally demonstrate the proposed concept, our experiments were carried out on a scale model in the microwave range. The scaled proof-of-concept of proposed structure is fabricated by 3D printing of polylactide material, and the brass metallic alloy is used as a perfect electrical conductor for microwave experiments. A good agreement between numerical and experimental results is achieved. The proposed design approach is not restricted only to multi-directional optical cloaking but can also be applied for different cloaking scenarios dealing with electromagnetic waves in nanoscales as well as other types of such as acoustic waves. Using nanotechnology, our scale proof-of-concept research will take the next step towards the creation of "optical cloaking" devices.

Abstract:Invisible cloak derived from the coordinate transformation requires its constitutive material to be anisotropic. In this work, we present a cloak of graded-index isotropic material based on the geometrical optics theory. The cloak is realized by concentric multilayered structure with designed refractive index to achieve the low-scattering and smooth power-flow. Full-wave simulations on such a design of a cylindrical cloak are performed to demonstrate the cloaking ability to incident wave of any polarization. Using normal nature material with isotropy and low absorption, the cloak shows light on a practical path to stealth technology, especially that in the optical range.
