Abstract:A new type of cloak is discussed: one that gives all cloaked objects the appearance of a flat conducting sheet. It has the advantage that none of the parameters of the cloak is singular and can in fact be made isotropic. It makes broadband cloaking in the optical frequencies one step closer.

Abstract:Invisibility cloak has attracted the attention of electromagnetic researchers due to its magical properties and marvelous potential applications in the field of applied physics and engineering. Recently, a multiphysics cloaking has put the new spirit into this field. In this paper, we introduce a device, composed of three shells and each shell works as an invisibility cloak for a specific physical phenomenon. Following this technique, a number of cloaks with different implementation approaches can be proposed for distinct physical phenomena in a single structure. Here, we restrict ourselves for the case of two physical behaviors: thermal and electrical conductivities. This type of multi-cloaking structure can be best used in mechanically designed structures to better control heating and electrical effects.

Abstract:In this paper the authors report that perfect invisibility cloaking could be achieved in a medium designed by a non-Euclidean conformal transformation. Wave behaviors could be controlled as well as the cloaking device configured by the general Euclidean approach dealing with the full Maxwell's equations. The cloaking medium proposed here is totally isotropic and can work in waves without the geometry and polarization limits; thus it is very promising for applications to build a device to hide large objects.

Abstract:Electromagnetic invisible devices usually designed by transformation optics are rather complicated in material parameters and not suitable for general applications. Recently, a topology optimized cloak based on level-set method was proposed to realize nearly perfect cloaking [Fujii et al., Appl. Phys. Lett. 102, 251106 (2013)]. In this work, we experimentally implemented this idea and fabricated a unidirectional cloak with a relative large invisible region made of single dielectric material. Good cloaking performance was verified through measurement which consists very well with numerical simulation. The advantages and disadvantages of this optimization method are also discussed.

Abstract:Magnetic invisible cloaking has been previously demonstrated but only limited to objects with rotational geometries either in spherical or cylindrical shapes, for which the classic analytical bilayer scheme could be strictly applied to design the hiding coat. In this work, we show that a quasi-static cloaking effect could be achieved for irregular objects, e.g., metals with sharp edges, using a numerical optimization scheme. In the quasi-static limit, it is unambiguously proved that the disturbance of the irregular geometries could be well compensated by the inhomogeneous distribution of the soft ferromagnetic (FM) layer either in permeability values or in shapes under the framework of a bilayer cloak. An FM mesh coat with a constant thickness of 0.5 mm was successfully engineered to meet the specific requirements. Experimentally, good cloaking performance with a field disturbance of less than 0.5% has been achieved for a 2 × 2 × 5 cm3 brass bar in a wide frequency range from ∼10 to 250 kHz. A commercial metal scanner was also applied to verify the practical potential. The general strategy to hide almost arbitrary objects was discussed in the end. In principle, the numerical conformal coat engineered by the composite material proposed here could be broadly extended for objects with various geometries.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrated an alternative approach of invisibility cloaking that can combine technical advantages of all current major cloaking strategies in a unified manner and thus can solve bottlenecks of individual strategies. A broadband cylindrical invisibility cloak in free space is designed based on scattering cancellation (the approach of previous plasmonic cloaking), and implemented with anisotropic metamaterials (a fundamental property of singular-transformation cloaks). Particularly, non-superluminal propagation of electromagnetic waves, a superior advantage of non-Euclidian-transformation cloaks constructed with complex branch cuts, is inherited in this design, and thus is the reason of its relatively broad bandwidth. This demonstration provides the possibility for future practical implementation of cloaking devices at large scales in free space.

Abstract:We investigate the scattering of 2D cylindrical invisibility cloaks with simplified constitutive parameters with the assistance of scattering coefficients. We show that the scattering of the cloaks originates not only from the boundary conditions but also from the spatial variation of the component of permittivity/permeability. According to our formulation, we propose some restrictions to the invisibility cloak in order to minimize its scattering after the simplification has taken place. With our theoretical analysis, it is possible to design a simplified cloak using some peculiar composites such as photonic crystals which mimic an effective refractive index landscape rather than offering effective constitutives, meanwhile cancelling the scattering from the inner and outer boundaries.

Abstract:A new recipe for concealing objects from detection is suggested. Different with traditional cloak which deflects light around the core of the cloak to make the object inside invisible, our cloak guides the light to penetrate the core of the cloak but without striking some region of the cloak shell - the so called folded region. Full wave analytical calculation shows that this cloak will lead to a scattering enhancement instead of scattering reduction in contrast to the traditional cloak; the scattered field distribution can also be changed as if the scatterer is moved from its original position. Such interesting phenomenon indicates the proposed cloak can be used to disguise the true information of the object, e.g. the position, the size, etc, and further mislead the observer and avoid being detected.

Abstract:The existence of a non-electrically-small scatterer adjacent to the source can severely distort the radiation and lead to a poor electromagnetic compatibility. In this work, we use a conducting hollow cylinder to shield a cylindrical scatterer. The cylinder is shelled with a single dielectric layer enclosed by an electromagnetic metasurface. The relationship between the scattering field and the surface impedance is derived analytically. By optimizing the Fourier expansion coefficients of the surface impedance distribution along ϕ-dimension, the scattering cross-section can be effectively reduced. This unidirectional cloaking method is valid for both TM/TE and non-TM/TE incident field and is not limited to a plane-wave incident field. The accuracy and effectiveness of the method are verified by four cloaking scenarios in microwave regime. We demonstrate that with the surface impedance obtained by the proposed method, a metasurface is designed with physical subwavelength structures. We also show a cloaking scenario under a magnetic dipole radiation, which is closer to the case of a realistic antenna. This method can be further applied to cloaking tasks in terahertz and optical regimes.

Abstract:Unidirectional cloaks or carpet cloaks have become an essential branch of invisibility cloaks due to non-extreme parameters that are relatively easy for realization and potential applications. So far, a unidirectional cloak for transverse electric (TE) polarized wave has been successfully realized to hide an object in the air along a single direction with almost ideal performance. However, a practical method to achieve a unidirectional cloak for transverse magnetic (TM) polarization is still missing. In this paper, we successfully have designed, fabricated, and measured a full-parameter unidirectional TM-wave cloak in free space. In comparison to the previously-realized TE-wave counterpart, our cloak uses a perfect electric conductor boundary to obey the free-space symmetry condition of the TM incident wave and is therefore much more convenient to fabricate. The cloaking performance of the fabricated sample has been demonstrated via both full-wave numerical simulation and near-field measurement.

Abstract:Invisibility cloaks have attracted wide interest recently because of their possible realization. As is one of types of invisibility cloaks, carpet cloaks were first presented by Pendry in 2008. However, most of the realized carpet cloaks in microwave region can only conceal the metal bump under TM-polarized incident wave because non-magnetism is required in the realization of the carpet cloak. Here, we demonstrate a Te-polarized microwave broadband carpet cloak based on the Tranformation Optics. Closed-rings, which are used to construct cloaking layer, can provide anisotropic permeability with little dispersion in a large frequency range required in our design. The cloaking behavior is confirmed in our measurements from 2-7 GHz.
Carpet Cloak with Photonic Crystal Shield That Permits Information Exchange

Abstract:Carpet cloaks designed by optical transformation usually include a perfect shield, which exclude the electromagnetic fields from the under cloaked region. Due to the shield, observers in the cloaked area cannot “see” the outside. In this article, we report a flat carpet cloak that permits information exchange with outer environment by using one- or two-dimensional photonic crystal structures as substitutes for the perfect shield. The lateral shifts at the reflecting surface of the effective shields, which make the carpet cloak detectable, are considered and calculated with a Gaussian beam illumination. In order to counteract the lateral shifts, we redesign the parameters of the cloaking slab based on the coordinate transformation. Good agreements have been obtained between the adjusted carpet and ideal carpet with a perfect shield.

Abstract:Due to the correspondence of the acoustic equations to Maxwell’s equations of one polarization in two dimensions, we exploit theoretically the acoustic counterpart of the recently proposed remote invisibility cloak. The cloak consists of a circular cylindrical core with designed bulk moduli, and an “anti-object” embedded inside a shell with anisotropic mass densities. The material parameters of the cloaking shells are obtained by using the coordinate transformation method. The essence of the new design of cloaks relies on the ability that the cloaked object is no longer deafened by the cloaking shell, which is verified by both the far-field and near-field full-wave finite-element simulations in two dimensions.

Abstract:We present the design, fabrication and performance test of a quasi three-dimensional carpet cloak made of normal dielectric in the microwave regime. Taking advantage of a simple linear coordinate transformation we design a carpet cloak with homogeneous anisotropic medium and then practically realize the device with multilayer of alternating normal dielectric slabs based on the effective medium theory. As a proof-of-concept example, we fabricate the carpet cloak with multilayer of FR4 dielectric slabs with air spacing. The performance of the fabricated design is verified through full-wave numerical simulation and measurement of the far-field scattering electromagnetic waves in a microwave anechoic chamber. Experimental results have demonstrated pronounced cloaking effect in a very broad band from 8 GHz to 18 GHz (whole X and Ku band) due to the low loss, non-dispersive feature of the multilayer dielectric structure.

Abstract:Carpet cloaking is proposed to hide an object on a dielectric half-space from electromagnetic (EM) detection. A two-dimensional conformal transformation specified by an analytic function is utilized for the design. Only one nonsingular material parameter distribution suffices for the characterization. The cloaking cover situates on the dielectric half-space, and consists of a lossless upper part for EM wave redirection and an absorbing bottom layer for inducing correct reflection coefficient and absorbing transmission. Numerical simulations with Gaussian beam incidence are performed for verification.

Practical Realization of Transformation-Optics Designed Invisibility Cloak Through Layered Structures

Abstract:The idea of cloaking objects from the observation by electromagnetic (EM) fields based on the recently proposed transformation optics requires anisotropic space-dependent inhomogeneous medium to construct the cloak. To reduce the design complexity and realization difficulty, in this paper we present an approach of constructing the invisibility cloak through layered structures of isotropic homogeneous media. We will show the practical design procedure based on the effective medium theory. Two examples, one for a cylindrical cloak and the other for a ground plane cloak, will be demonstrated and the cloaking performances will be verified through full-wave EM numerical calculations. The proposed cloaks are composed of normal dielectric multilayers, thus can lead to easy experimental demonstration of non-magnetic cloak in the frequency range from microwave to optical.
A Third Way to Cloak an Object: Cover-Up with A Background Object

Abstract:Based on a space folding transformation, we propose a new way to hide an object in full space, namely, to cover-up the scattering of the hidden object with the scattering of a background object so that only the scattering of the background object can be detected by an outside observer and the hidden object disappears electromagnetically (a very weak "ghost image" or perturbation may appear inside the strong background object image in an experiment). The present method is essentially different from previous methods of cloaking an object, namely, the optically isolated cloak and the scattering cancellation cloak, and thus provide a third way to cloak an object. Unlike all the previous methods of cloaking, the present full-space omni-directional invisibility simultaneously has the following features: (i) the hidden object can "see" the outside world without being detected; (H) the cloak can still work when some characteristics (e.g., shape and medium) of the hidden object change; and (Hi) there is no need to know the information of the incident wave in advance. The present work furthers efforts to achieve invisibility and conceal an object in a real environment in full space.

Abstract:A general procedure to design objects that are intrinsically invisible (without the necessity of an external cloak) has not been demonstrated so far. Here we propose a flexible method to design such self-cloaked objects by uncoupling the scattered waves from the incident radiation via judiciously manipulating the scattering potential of the object. We show that such a procedure is able to yield optical invisibility for any arbitrarily shaped object within any specified frequency bandwidth by simply employing isotropic nonmagnetic dielectric materials, without the usage of loss or gain material. The validity of the design principle has been verified by direct experimental observations of the spatial electric field profiles and scattering patterns at the microwave regime. Our self-cloaking strategy may have profound implications especially in noninvasive probing, cloaked sensor applications, and scattering-free non-Hermitian optics based systems.

Full-wave Analysis of Conical Cloaking Structures

Abstract:Concealing an object by only covering an open space can be realized with a conical cloak. It is shown that we can not only use a conical cloak to guide the electromagnetic (EM) wave totally around an open region without introducing any scattered field, but also design one which produces the reflection exactly the same as that caused by a dielectric half space, in addition, it is demonstrated that introducing a little loss can significantly reduce the electric field distributed at the infinite side of the conical cloak, which indicate the possibility of truncating the conical cloak in axial direction and opens a path to its physical realization. Our approach provides a practical way to achieve invisibility, especially in the case where there are two half spaces composed of different media.
