Abstract:Rational design and targeted synthesis of efficient supported metal nanocatalysts for catalytic transformation of renewable biomass into value-added chemicals and fuels has attracted increasing attentions in heterogeneous catalysis. Precisely tailoring the surface microenvironment of supported metal nanocatalysts including geometric coordination environment and electronic state of metal active sites, especially for highly dispersed single atoms (SAs), nanoclusters (NCs) and nanoparticles (NPs), plays significant roles in improving catalytic performance for biomass conversion. Owing to the atomic-level uniform distribution of constituent metal species, flexible chemical compositions, unique confinement effect and topological transformation property, layered double hydroxides (LDHs) as a family of 2D layered nanomaterials, are believed to be ideal structure platforms to acquire highly dispersed supported metal nanocatalysts with well-designed surface microenvironments. Herein, classic synthesis approaches of LDHs precursors and typical confinement synthesis strategies of highly dispersed LDHs-based metal nanocatalysts (e.g. SAs, NCs, NPs) with specific surface microenvironments are systematically discussed. Particular emphasis is placed on specific microenvironment effects of LDHs-based metal nanocatalysts and their advanced applications for reductive, oxidative and reforming upgrading of various biomass-derived molecules with aim to reveal structure–property relationship and catalytic reaction mechanism. Finally, challenges and perspectives are illustrated to provide further guidance for developing high-performance LDHs-based metal nanocatalysts for efficient and sustainable biomass transformation.

Abstract:In biomass refinery, ionic liquids (ILs) enable more efficient conversion and higher product selectivity at milder conditions compared with conventional molecular solvents. Carbohydrates and lignin are the dominating components in biomass. The aim of this article is to update the recent progresses of ionic liquids‐based catalytic systems for lignocellulosic biomass conversions based on the published works mostly in the last 5 years. Mechanistic understanding of the catalytic processes in converting biomass to renewable chemicals and fuels is critically important for the design of superior catalysts. Apart from theoretical approaches, two recently developed characterization techniques, in situ far infrared spectroscopy and two‐dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance have been applied in the molecular level understanding of both catalysts and catalyzed reactions during biomass conversions in ILs. Engineering Functional Hydrochar Based Catalyst with Corn Stover and Model Components for Efficient Glucose Isomerization

Abstract:The conversion of biomass to functional hydrochar based catalysts for sustainable biorefinery application is critical but still challenging. In this study, mild hydrothermal treatment combined with limited oxygen calcination was developed to treat corn stover and model components for directional preparation of hydrochar based catalysts. The prepared catalysts with various Al active species, exhibited high specific surface area, hierarchical pores, cross-linked carbon microspheres, and excellent catalytic and recycling performances for glucose isomerization. After optimization, a fructose yield of 35.1% (selectivity 77.4%) was obtained at 160 degrees C for 20 min and it was still more than 25% after the fourth recycling. The reaction kinetics for glucose isomerization was studied. This study established the physicochemical properties performance relationships of hydrochar based catalysts. The optimized hydrothermal and calcination steps were crucial to improving performance by regulating the active sites and catalyst structures. Moreover, nitrogen, silicon and other elements coupled together could form functional compounds, which is vital for improving the catalytic performance by the synergy between support and Al active center. Three components in corn stover played distinct roles in the catalysis step. This study provides a novel way for developing efficient and recyclable catalysts from biomass, which could be applied in biorefining. (C) 2022 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Layered double hydroxides (LDH) have significant attention in recent times due to their unique characteristic properties, including layered structure, variable compositions, tunable acidity and basicity, memory effect, and their ability to transform into various kinds of catalysts, which make them desirable for various types of catalytic applications, such as electrocatalysis, photocatalysis, and thermocatalysis. In addition, the upcycling of lignocellulose biomass and its derived compounds has emerged as a promising strategy for the synthesis of valuable products and fine chemicals. The current review focuses on recent advancements in LDH‐based catalysts for biomass conversion reactions. Specifically, this review highlights the structural features and advantages of LDH and LDH‐derived catalysts for biomass conversion reactions, followed by a detailed summary of the different synthesis methods and different strategies used to tailor their properties. Subsequently, LDH‐based catalysts for hydrogenation, oxidation, coupling, and isomerization reactions of biomass‐derived molecules are critically summarized in a very detailed manner. The review concludes with a discussion on future research directions in this field which anticipates that further exploration of LDH‐based catalysts and integration of cutting‐edge technologies into biomass conversion reactions hold promise for addressing future energy challenges, potentially leading to a carbon‐neutral or carbon‐positive future.

Abstract:Valorization of biomass and plastics is an urgent assignment to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality. Hydrodeoxygenation using bimetallic catalysts with distinct active sites is one of the most effective approaches to producing fuels and chemicals via C-O/C-C bonds hydrogenolysis and hydrogenation. Rational design of bimetallic catalysts has been progressed in recent studies owing to the understanding of synergy and strong mutual interaction between metal nanoparticles and metal oxide species. Thus, activity of bimetallic catalysts has been further improved, and the chemoselectivity for suppression of C-C bond dissociation and the regioselectivity among different C-O bonds, which have less been achieved before, are realized in the hydrodeoxygenation reactions. The catalytic performances, catalyst structures, and reaction mechanisms are directly compared and discussed in details based on the C-O bond cleavage using glycerol and 1,2-propanediol hydrogenolysis as model reactions over Ir-, Pt-, and Ru-based bimetallic catalysts. Finally, application of these bimetallic catalysts to conversion of lignocellulose-derived feedstocks, carbonyl compounds, and typical plastic of polycarbonates is introduced. Abstract:Biomass is one of the most promising renewable resources, and biomass energy is also recognized as the zero-carbon emission energy. Over the past decade, thermochemical conversion technologies have been well developed to convert different types of biomass feedstocks into solid biochar, liquid fuels, and gas, in which catalysts are commonly applied. This review summarizes the types of catalysts used in three common thermochemical conversion pathways (pyrolysis, hydrothermal liquefaction and gasification), while focusing on the most recent progress in the applications of catalysts in these processes. The catalytic reaction mechanisms, catalysts deactivation and regeneration, industrial utilization, as well as the challenges and knowledge gaps for applications of catalyst in these processes are analyzed and discussed.

Abstract:Review of layered double hydroxides (LDH)‐derived materials as catalysts for thermal and/or solar‐assisted pyrolysis (including hydropyrolysis and copyrolysis) of biomass to produce high‐quality bio‐oil. Owing to the enormous consumption of petroleum products and their environmental polluting nature, attention has been given to seeking alternative resources for the development of sustainable products. Biomass is a renewable source that can be converted to a variety of fuels and chemicals by different approaches, which are the best replacements for traditional petroleum‐derived products. Pyrolysis is a process in which chemical bonds of biomass macromolecules such as cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, are fractured into small molecular intermediates under high pressure, and results bio‐oil, biochar, and fuel gases as desired products. Of these pyrolysis products, bio‐oil is the primary product that usually contains large amounts of oxygen and nitrogen compounds that hinder its application potential. Catalytic pyrolysis is a beneficial method that is reported to alter the constituents and quality of bio‐oil and to upgrade them for diverse applications. Catalytic hydropyrolysis and copyrolysis of biomass are an alternative approaches to overcome the drawbacks raised toward product formation in the pyrolysis process. Layered double hydroxides (LDH) and their derived forms are well‐known catalytic/catalytic support materials for various chemical reactions due to their superior properties, such as easy preparation, thermal stability, and tuneable acid/base properties. This review summarizes the progress in the utilization of as‐synthesized LDH and their modified forms such as mixed metal oxides and functionalized/composite materials as active catalysts for the pyrolysis of various biomass sources.

Synthesis of Sustainable Aviation Biofuels Via Catalytic Hydropyrolysis of Lignin

Abstract:The exploitation of bimetallic catalysts to lignin for sustainable aviation biofuels remains a daunting challenge due to the low selectivity of aviation biofuel-range hydrocarbons and inconsistent reaction mechanism. Herein, bimetallic supported on SiO2 catalysts were prepared and their hydrodeoxygenation reactivity during lignin catalytic hydropyrolysis was explored. Approximately 100% selectivity toward aviation-range hydrocarbons were achieved using eugenol as model compound under relatively mild conditions with the presence of NiMo/SiO2. For lignin catalytic hydropyrolysis, the yield of liquid hydrocarbons and the selectivity of aviation-range hydrocarbons was 21.99wt% and 70.50%, respectively. High mass balance (89.66%) was verified by scale-up experiments in a continuous flow high-pressure reactor system. The reactivity of demethoxylation reaction, dehydroxylation reaction, and benzene ring hydrogenation reaction with the presence of bimetallic catalysts were analyzed. The density functional theory calculation and verification experiments revealed the evolution pathway of aromatic hydrocarbons and cycloalkanes from lignin catalytic hydropyrolysis. The proposed reaction mechanism can provide guidance for the regulation of aviation biofuel components from lignin catalytic hydropyrolysis.

Abstract:The catalytic conversion of biomass into high value-added products has attracted wide attention, especially the efficient and selective conversion of cellulose into valuable chemicals and fuels. In this paper, using Ni, Al and Ni, Zn, Al layered double hydroxides (LDHs) as precursors, mixed metal oxides Ni-MMO and NiZn-MMO catalysts were synthesized. In the process of catalyzing the conversion of cellulose to polyols, the reaction condition was an H2 pressure of 4 MPa, and the temperature was 240 °C for 2 hours, the NiZn-MMO catalyst, which can achieve 100% conversion rate and excellent cycling performance in the process of catalytic conversion of cellulose to polyols. The characterization and reaction results showed that the size of the active metal particles Ni in the synthesized Ni-MMO and NiZn-MMO catalysts were very small, and only 1-2nm. ZnO in the NiZn-MMO catalyst mainly play an isomerization role, promoting the formation of more 1,2-PG, while the strong interaction between Ni and Zn can inhibit the dissolution of metal Ni in the hydrothermal reaction. On the other hand, Ni mainly plays the role of rapid hydrogenation to avoid coking, which constitutes a multi-functional synergistic catalytic process for the conversion of cellulose to polyols in high temperature water. This work provides an economical and efficient catalyst, which is of great significance for the effective conversion of biomass.

Abstract:A series of biomass-derived platform molecules, such as glucose, furans, levulinic acid, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, and acetic acids, can be converted into a variety of value-added chemicals through catalytic transformations that include dehydration, hydrogenation, oxidation, isomerization, reforming, ketonization, and aldol condensation over heterogeneous catalysts. Aqueous-phase processing is an important issue and a great challenge for the heterogeneous catalytic conversion of biobased chemicals due to the high water content of the biomass and the formation of water during the transformation process. In this paper, heterogeneous catalysts that are applicable to the aqueous-phase conversion process of biomass platform chemicals, including noble metal catalysts, non-noble metal catalysts, bimetallic catalysts, metal oxides, and zeolite, are introduced, and a comprehensive evaluation of the catalyst performance, including the catalytic activity, stability, and regeneration performance of different kinds of heterogeneous catalysts, are made. Besides, we highlighted the effect of water on heterogeneous catalysts and the deactivation mechanism in the aqueous phase. Beyond this, several catalytic mechanisms of aqueous-phase conversion over heterogeneous catalysts are summarized in order to help understand the reaction process on the surface of catalysts in the aqueous phase, so as to design targeted catalysts. At last, a prospect of biobased chemicals and fuels is forecasted.

Abstract:Transforming plant biomass to biofuel and chemicals has become a global effort as results of increasing fuel demand but diminishing fossil-based energy preservation and rising concerns of climate and environmental impact. Various conversion routes involving thermochemical and biological conversions have been established and well-studied. Heterogeneous catalysis is playing a critical role in the biomass conversion and, with some unique catalytic properties, nanoporous catalysts have been extensively utilized in catalytic process of biomass conversion and exhibited exciting catalytic performance. This chapter will be devoted to nanoporous catalysts used in biomass conversion. It will start with a brief introduction of current biomass conversion technologies and then a detailed review of the application of various nanoporous materials in a large diversity of catalytic reactions in biomass conversion. The nanoporous materials include zeolites and zeotypes, metal–organic frameworks, nanoporous carbons and carbon nitrides, nanoporous oxides, hydroxides and complex oxide forms, porous organic polymers, and porous metals.

Abstract:The production of fuels and chemicals from renewable lignocellulosic biomass resources has been a major research focus in the last few decades. The most efficient method for synthesizing value-added chemical products from sustainable feedstocks is direct catalytic conversion, however, the multifunctional and highly oxygenated biomass-derived substrates are significantly different from petroleum-based feedstocks. Thus, systematic development of new catalytic materials is required to take advantage of the only substantial source of renewable carbon. In this review, we discuss the foundational methodologies that enable rational catalyst design through the investigation of surface-adsorbate interactions and the elucidation of descriptors for selectivity control. Molecular spectroscopies, efficient and predictive computational modeling, rigorous kinetic investigations, and highly controlled materials synthesis have generated fundamental insights leading to general catalyst design principles in biomass upgrading processes. The application of each technique in biomass research is discussed in the context of several case studies, with a focus on the unique insights available from each technique. Moreover, the interplay among multiple techniques, particularly between experimental and computational methods, is also highlighted. Despite the impressive progress made in the biomass field, major roadblocks still exist due to the complexity in the composition and structure of both substrates and catalysts. We share our perspectives regarding future needs in selective catalytic conversions of multifunctional substrates and methods for accelerating catalyst development.

Abstract:Herein, an efficient and practical approach for dipolar modification of commercially available solid catalysts is reported. The solid catalysts HMS (hexagonal mesoporous silica)-DMSO decorated with organic dipolar layers are designed and synthesized by radiation technology under simple and accessible conditions. The dipolar catalysts can serve as platforms to introduce various active sites, benefiting from the flexibility and diversity of the dipolar layer, which in turn allow them to achieve catalytic performance in relatively friendly systems. Specifically, the upgraded dipolar catalyst HMS-DMSO-SO3H exhibits good performance in converting the oxidized lignin model compound of α-hydroxyacetophenone to 1,3-dioxolane derivatives and dehydrating isomaltulose to glycosyloxymethyl-furfural (GMF).

Abstract:Bio-fuels emerge as a promising candidate for a sustainable and cheap energy source that can replace diminishing fossil fuels. Among various methods used for the production of bio-fuel, catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is one of the most efficient route due to high conversion efficiency, easy handling and flexibility of using raw biomass. In this context, we present the use of noble-metal-free oxo-vanadium-substituted potassium salt of phosphotungstic acid as a catalyst for HDO of pine sawdust into hydrocarbons and valuable chemicals with a high carbon yield (73.5%) and excellent conversion efficiency (86.2%). The high Bronsted acidity of phosphotungstic acid greatly favors deoxygenation reactions of lignocellulosic components. Moreover, the synergistic effect between kegginanion, potassium and vanadium entities supports fast multielectron redox transformations and much improves thermal stability. The cellulosic components are selectively converted into pentanes and hexanes. The lignin fraction of biomass is converted into phenolic compounds. It is worth mentioning that raw biomass is directly utilized as obtained without pretreatment, separation and hydrolysis processes in comparison with the existing approaches, thus saving tremendous amount of energy and reducing the cost for large scale production.
Supported catalysts based on layered double hydroxides for catalytic oxidation and hydrogenation: general functionality and promising application prospects

Abstract:Oxidation and hydrogenation catalysis plays a crucial role in the current chemical industry for the production of key chemicals and intermediates. Because of their easy separation and recyclability, supported catalysts are widely used in these two processes. Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) with the advantages of unique structure, composition diversity, high stability, ease of preparation and low cost have shown great potential in the design and synthesis of novel supported catalysts. This review summarizes the recent progress in supported catalysts by using LDHs as supports/precursors for catalytic oxidation and hydrogenation. Particularly, partial hydrogenation of acetylene, hydrogenation of dimethyl terephthalate, methanation, epoxidation of olefins, elimination of NOx and SOx emissions, and selective oxidation of biomass have been chosen as representative reactions in the petrochemical, fine chemicals, environmental protection and clean energy fields to highlight the potential application and the general functionality of LDH-based catalysts in catalytic oxidation and hydrogenation. Finally, we concisely discuss some of the scientific challenges and opportunities of supported catalysts based on LDH materials.

Abstract:Biomass, as a very important renewable resource, its efficient conversion was an important way to achieve zero CO 2 emissions, provide clean and renewable energy, and promote the resource utilization of agricultural waste. Biomass pyrolysis, as a technology that could simultaneously obtain high value-added energy and chemical products such as biochar, bio-oil, and combustible gas, had received widespread attention, in which the role of catalysts in biomass pyrolysis had also been widely studied. In this thesis, the application of catalysts in biomass pyrolysis was reviewed in detail on the basis of introducing the principle and pyrolysis methods of biomass pyrolysis, and found that catalysts could effectively improve the distribution and properties of pyrolysis products, especially for the reforming of bio-oil and bio-gas, which had shown outstanding performance in green energy and functional chemicals. At the same time, the current problems of catalysts in biomass pyrolysis were analyzed, and new thoughts were proposed for future research on biomass catalytic pyrolysis, with a view to providing new ways for efficient catalytic pyrolysis and green sustainable development of biomass.

Abstract:Biofuel or biochemical production from biomass, especially lignocellulosic biomass, is the most promising option to replace fossil-based products to achieve sustainability. However, biomass is currently under-utilized because biomass conversion technologies have faced significant challenges to compete with incumbent petroleum technologies. Advancement in catalysis plays a central role in increasing the readiness of biomass conversion technologies. In this respect, improving catalyst stability is one of the well-known grand challenges for biomass conversion catalysis, which impedes the scaling up and commercialization of many biomass conversion techniques. In comparison to conventional processing of fossil fuels (petroleum, coal, and natural gas), biomass conversion is largely challenged by three unique properties of biomass-derived feedstockshigh water and oxygen content, high contamination by minerals and heteroatoms, and high degree and reactivity of oxygen functionalizationwhich all cause greater catalyst deactivation in different ways. Therefore, research on catalyst deactivation mitigation and catalyst regeneration is extremely important for the development of biomass conversion technologies. This review aims to highlight studies on catalyst deactivation and mitigation for thermo-catalytic processes in biomass conversion, with emphasis on the deactivation of heterogeneous catalysts caused by the three unique characteristics of biomass-derived feedstocks. This work will provide information on correlating the characteristics of biomass-derived streams, their potential impact on catalyst lifetime, and a potential mitigation approach, which could guide a more rational design of a robust catalyst and processes for biomass conversion.
