Abstract:The emission of nitrogen oxides (NOx), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and carbon dioxide (CO2) is a significant contributor to air pollution and global warming, negatively affecting both the environment and human health. Photocatalysis has emerged as an effective technology for eliminating the aforementioned species from waste gases. Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have attracted increasing attention for their potential as the photocatalysts in gaseous pollutant and CO2 abatement reactions, relying on the advantages including earth abundance, easy fabrication, and low cost. This review provides a comprehensive summarization of recent progresses on the photocatalytic removal of NOx, VOCs, and CO2 using the LDHs-based materials. Simply put, the fundamentals of LDHs such as the crystal structures and the relevant synthesis methods were introduced at first. As activity and selectivity are recognized as the key properties for evaluating these catalysts, the advances in enhancing these properties were summarized and discussed in the subsequently sections. Furthermore, mechanisms of NOx oxidation, VOCs degradation, and CO2 reduction were also elucidated from a microscopic perspective. Finally, this review emphasizes the directions for improving the photocatalytic activity of the LDHs-based photocatalysts, along with the need to investigate the simultaneous removal of multi-pollutants and the catalysts’ gas component adaptability.

Abstract:Transition-metal-catalyzed transfer hydrogenation with an in situ hydrogen donor has received a great deal of attention from both academia and industry as an alternative to the traditional high-pressure-hydrogen process, owing to its better efficiency, atom economy, and sustainability features. Hydrogen stored in the chemical bonds of formic acid (FA), a promising hydrogen storage compound that could be derived from biomass or reduction of CO2, can be extracted selectively and used for diverse catalytic transformations. This Review summarizes and compares recent progress in catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) via heterogeneous hydrogen transfer from FA. Trans formations of biomass-derived platform chemicals (e.g., aromatic units, C5 and C6 sugars, furans, glycerol, fatty acids, levulinic acid (LA)), nitrogen-containing compounds (e.g., nitroarenes, quinolines), and organochlorinated compounds via transfer hydrogenation, hydrogenolysis, and hydrodechlmination (HDC) are outlined. Synthesis strategies of the heterogeneous metal catalysts (e.g., metal and support type, metal-support interaction, single-atom, alloy effect, and confinement effect) and optimization of the reaction conditions (e.g., temperature, solvents, additives, and FA dosages) for enhancing the catalytic activity and regulating the product distribution are presented. Structure-activity relationships based on both dehydrogenation and hydrogenation of metal catalysts as well as the mechanistic interpretation of CTH with FA are also highlighted. Finally, current challenges and outlook for the future development of the field are discussed.

Abstract:The adage of new generation of fine chemicals process is the best process applied in the absence of conventional methods. However, many methods use different reaction parameters, such as basic and acidic catalysts, for example oxidation, reduction, bromination, water splitting, cyanohydrin, ethoxylation, syngas, aldol condensation, Michael addition, asymmetric ring opening of epoxides, epoxidation, Wittig and Heck reaction, asymmetric ester epoxidation of fatty acids, combustion of methane, NOx reduction, biodiesel synthesis, propylene oxide polymerization. Layered Double Hydroxides (LDHs) have received considerable attention due their potential applications in flame retardant and has excellent medicinal property for reducing acidity. These catalysts are characterized using analytical techniques, such as: X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), Raman spectroscopy, Thermogravimetric-Differential Thermal Analyzer (TG-DTA), Scanning electron microscope (SEM), Transmission electron microscopes (TEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area, N2 Adsorption-desorption, Temperature programmed reduction (TPR), X-ray photoelectrons spectroscopy (XPS), which gives its overall picture of its structure, porosity, morphology, thermal stability, reusability, and activity of catalysts. LDHs catalysts have proven to be economic and environmentally friendly. The above discussed applications make these catalysts unique from Green Chemistry point of view since they are reusable, and eco-friendly catalysts. Abstract:Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are a class of anionic clays with flexible tunability, facile exchangeability of intercalated anions, good thermal stability, and plentiful active sites. By virtue of their advantages, LDHs, as catalysts, catalyst precursors or catalyst supports, have been widely used in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) to degrade organic pollutants in water and showed prominent catalytic performance as concluded from nearly 100% removal of contaminants in a relatively short time. To shed light on the synthesis, application and catalytic performance of LDH-based catalysts, this review summarized the properties, categories, synthesis and characterization methods of LDH-based catalysts, and their applications, reaction mechanisms and the corresponding influencing factors in heterogeneous Fenton-like processes, sulfate radical based AOPs and photocatalysis. Compared with LDHs, LDOs and nanocomposites possess other performances that are beneficial for AOPs catalysis process, such as good dispersity, easy separability and synergistic effect. Moreover, the optimum material design and corresponding reaction mechanisms would be varied with the types of AOPs. In the end, based on the current challenges in LDH-based catalysts, future researches are suggested to focus on developing green and efficient synthetic method, optimizing material design, and promoting their practical application.

Abstract:This graphical abstract showcases an overview of self‐supported layered double hydroxides (LDHs) within the electrocatalysis arena, unraveling the sophisticated state‐of‐the‐art synthetic approaches along with intriguing modification strategies such as doping, vacancy, phase engineering and interfacial engineering using various coupling materials to form heterostructures. This review delves into the renaissance of this frontier across multifarious electrocatalytic applications. Amid the ongoing transition toward renewable fuels, the self‐supported layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are envisioned as propitious electrocatalysts for reinvigorating the electrocatalysis realm, thereby facilitating environmental remediation and bolstering sustainable global energy security. Exploiting appealing attributes such as unique lamellar structure, abundant active sites, tunable intercalation spacing and compositional flexibility, LDHs boast remarkable activity, selectivity and stability across diverse energy‐related applications. By virtue of addressing the technological and time prominence of excavating their renaissance, this review first encompasses the facile state‐of‐the‐art synthetic approaches alongside intriguing modification strategies, toward deciphering the authentic structure–performance correlations for advancing more robust and precise catalyst design. Aside from this, heterostructure engineering employing diversified ranges of coupling materials is highlighted, to construct ground‐breaking binder‐free LDHs‐based heterostructures endowing with unprecedented activity and stability. Subsequently, the milestone gained from experimental research and theoretical modeling of this frontier in multifarious electrocatalytic applications, including HER, OER, UOR, AOR, seawater splitting and other fundamental conversion reactions is rigorously unveiled. Abstract:Propane dehydrogenation (PDH) is an industrial technology for direct propylene production, which has received extensive attention and realized large-scale application. At present, the commercial Pt/Cr-based catalysts suffer from fast deactivation and inferior stability resulting from active species sintering and coke depositing. To overcome the above problems, several strategies such as the modification of support and the introduction of additives have been proposed to strengthen the catalytic performance and prolong the robust stability of Pt/Cr-based catalysts. This review firstly gives a brief description on the development of PDH and PDH catalysts. Then, the advanced research progress of supported noble metals, non-noble metals together with metal-free materials for PDH are systematically summarized along with the material design and active origin as well as the existing problems in the development of PDH catalysts. Furthermore, the review also emphasizes advanced synthetic strategies based on novel design of PDH catalysts with improved dehydrogenation activity and stability. Finally, the future challenges and directions of PDH catalysts are provided for the development their further industrial application.

Abstract:Layered double hydroxide (LDH) is regarded as an advanced platform material in catalysis and attracts vast attrition recently. As a kind of two-dimensional layered material, it exhibits great advantages including cation-tunability in layer, lattice limitation, topological transformation, ion exchange and intercalation characteristics. It also can be used as building blocks for composite catalytic materials. Over 100 years, a large number of works have been accomplished and researchers made great progress on investigating the LDH-based catalytic materials. In this review, we summarize representative achievements and significant progress in recent years, which mainly include constructing high entropy catalytic material, high dispersion/stability and interfacial supported catalytic material, composite catalytic materials and nano-reactor based on LDH. Furthermore, through collecting the excellent works, we conclude the future development potential of LDH and provide a perspective.

Abstract:Rational design and targeted synthesis of efficient supported metal nanocatalysts for catalytic transformation of renewable biomass into value-added chemicals and fuels has attracted increasing attentions in heterogeneous catalysis. Precisely tailoring the surface microenvironment of supported metal nanocatalysts including geometric coordination environment and electronic state of metal active sites, especially for highly dispersed single atoms (SAs), nanoclusters (NCs) and nanoparticles (NPs), plays significant roles in improving catalytic performance for biomass conversion. Owing to the atomic-level uniform distribution of constituent metal species, flexible chemical compositions, unique confinement effect and topological transformation property, layered double hydroxides (LDHs) as a family of 2D layered nanomaterials, are believed to be ideal structure platforms to acquire highly dispersed supported metal nanocatalysts with well-designed surface microenvironments. Herein, classic synthesis approaches of LDHs precursors and typical confinement synthesis strategies of highly dispersed LDHs-based metal nanocatalysts (e.g. SAs, NCs, NPs) with specific surface microenvironments are systematically discussed. Particular emphasis is placed on specific microenvironment effects of LDHs-based metal nanocatalysts and their advanced applications for reductive, oxidative and reforming upgrading of various biomass-derived molecules with aim to reveal structure–property relationship and catalytic reaction mechanism. Finally, challenges and perspectives are illustrated to provide further guidance for developing high-performance LDHs-based metal nanocatalysts for efficient and sustainable biomass transformation.

Abstract:Water electrolysis is regarded as one of the most viable technologies for the generation of green hydrogen. Nevertheless, the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) constitutes a substantial obstacle to the large-scale deployment of this technology, due to the considerable overpotential resulting from the retardation kinetics associated with the OER. The development of low-cost, high-activity, and long-lasting OER catalysts has emerged as a pivotal research area. Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have garnered significant attention due to their suitability for use with base metals, which are cost-effective and exhibit enhanced activity. However, the current performance of LDHs OER catalysts is still far from meeting the demands of industrial applications, particularly in terms of their long-term stability. In this review, we provide an overview of the causes for the deactivation of LDHs OER catalysts and present an analysis of the various mechanisms employed to improve the stability of these catalysts, including the synthesis of LDH ultrathin nanosheets, adjustment of components and doping, dissolution and redeposition, defect creation and corrosion, and utilization of advanced carbon materials.

Abstract:Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) and their derivatives are a family of promising photocatalysts that have been widely used in photodegradation of organic pollutants. We review the most recent advances in visible-light driven photodegradation of organic pollutants using LDHs based materials with emphasis on the manipulation of their morphological, compositional, and electronic properties and the mechanistic understandings of the photocatalytic processes. Based on the characteristic structures of LDHs, i.e., stable layered structure, specific “memory effect”, switchable property of layered composites and high surface area, we overview the performance and mechanism of LDHs based catalysts for the photodegradation of common and persistent organic pollutants. First, LDHs-based photocatalysts were classified into five categories, LDHs-derived mixed metal oxides, supporting LDHs, intercalated LDHs, modified LDHs, and LDHs with unique structures (e.g., core-shell LDHs), and reviewed individually in terms of their synthetic methodologies, and structural, atomistic topological and electronic properties. Second, for mechanistic understandings of the photocatalytic processes, we summarize major factors that govern the performance of LDHs-based photocatalysts, including catalytically-relevant properties at the metal/LDHs heterojunctions, adsorption effect, acid-base pairs and the presence of vacancy sites. Third, depending on the photodegradation reactions, the targeting organic pollutants were classified into four types, azo dyes, phenols, persistent organic pollutants and other types of organic pollutants; LDHs-based photocatalysts with optimized performance for each type of molecule are summarized with mechanistic understandings. In addition, we review recent trend in the application of LDHs-based materials in new-emerging areas including CO2 reduction, hydrolysis to produce hydrogen, and photo-assisted organic synthesis with promising performances. Mechanistic details of the photocatalytic processes that lead to the different outcomes in terms of the efficiency, reaction routes and practically-relevant applications in energy harvesting and removal of organic pollutants are the primary focus of the present review. Outlook of major future directions in LDHs-based photocatalysis is outlined by the end.

Abstract:Efficient upgrading of biomass-derived platform chemicals plays a crucial role in the sustainable synthesis of fine chemicals. Herein, the noble-metal free and robust Ni/Fe3O4 catalysts originated from NiFe-layered double hydroxides (LDHs) was efficient for the selective upgrading of benzaldehyde (BzH) and furfural (Fur), accordingly, the highest yield of fine chemical benzyl alcohol (99.0%, BAL) and biofuel 2-methylfuran (78.4%, 2-MF) were obtained under mild conditions over the Ni/Fe ratio of 1, respectively. These performance is far superior to most of preciously reported candidates and their counterpartners. Systematic characterizations further revealed that Ni2+/Fe3+ ratio was closely related to the dispersion and the surface acidity of catalysts, which played crucial roles in achieving excellent catalytic performance. Besides, the solvent effect, reaction parameters and reusability of catalysts in the hydrogenation process of benzaldehyde were then studied as example. Finally, the reaction pathways of benzaldehyde and furfural hydrogenation were rationally proposed. This work provides a promising way to upgrade biomass-derived chemicals.

Abstract:Recently, persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes (persulfate-AOPs) are booming rapidly due to their promising potential in treating refractory contaminants. As a type of popular two-dimensional material, layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are widely used in energy conversion, medicine, environment remediation and other fields for the advantages of high specific surface area (SSA), good tunability, biocompatibility and facile fabrication. These excellent physicochemical characteristics may enable LDH-based materials to be promising catalysts in persulfate-AOPs. In this work, we make a summary of LDHs and their composites in persulfate-AOPs from different aspects. Firstly, we introduce different structure and important properties of LDH-based materials briefly. Secondly, various LDH-based materials are classified according to the type of foreign materials (metal or carbonaceous materials, mainly). Latterly, we discuss the mechanisms of persulfate activation (including radical pathway and nonradical pathway) by these catalysts in detail, which involve (i) bimetallic synergism for radical generation, (ii) the role of carbonaceous materials in radical generation, (iii) singlet oxygen (1O2) production and several special nonradical mechanisms. In addition, the catalytic performance of LDH-based catalysts for contaminants are also summarized. Finally, challenges and future prospects of LDH-based composites in environmental remediation are proposed. We expect this review could bring new insights for the development of LDH-based catalyst and exploration of reaction mechanism.

Abstract:Hydrogen production via electrochemical water splitting is one of the most green and promising ways to produce clean energy and address resource crisis, but still suffers from low efficiency and high cost mainly due to the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) process. Alternatively, electrochemical hydrogen-evolution coupled with alternative oxidation (EHCO) has been proposed as a considerable strategy to improve hydrogen production efficiency combined with the production of high value-added chemicals. Although with these merits, high-efficient electrocatalysts are always needed in practical operation. Typically, layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have been developed as a large class of advanced electrocatalysts toward both OER and EHCO with high efficiency and stability. In this review, we have summarized the latest progress of hydrogen production from the perspectives of designing efficient LDHs-based electrocatalysts for OER and EHCO. Particularly, the influence of structure design and component regulation on the efficiency of their electrocatalytic process have been discussed in detail. Finally, we look forward to the challenges in the field of hydrogen production via electrochemical water splitting coupled with organic oxidation, such as the mechanism, selected oxidation as well as system design, hoping to provide certain inspiration for the development of low-cost hydrogen production technology.

Abstract:Abstract Hydrogen energy is considered as promising renewable resource and desirable alternative to fossil fuels for future energy supply. Hydrogen production from electrocatalytic water splitting is a green and key approach for hydrogen energy development and application, and the effective electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with low cost is the focus of ongoing research. Currently, noble metals‐based materials are the most effective and durable electrocatalysts for HER, while the high cost and low reserves greatly hinder their commercial applications. Recently, layered double hydroxides (LDHs) with interesting properties, such as the tunability of metal cation and interlayer anions, the adjustability of the thickness and spacing for the layers, low cost, and memory effect, have emerged as excellent electrocatalysts to enhance HER performance. Herein, the principal mechanisms and some key parameters for HER are firstly briefly introduced. Afterwards, the structural features and characteristics of LDHs are provided, and the typical design strategies to improve the HER activity of binary and ternary LDHs‐based catalysts are analyzed and discussed. In addition, the relationship between the morphology, structure, composition and involved electronic effects are focused and emphasized. Finally, the challenges and prospects of LDHs‐based catalysts for enhanced HER performance are proposed.

Abstract:Layered double hydroxides (LDH) have significant attention in recent times due to their unique characteristic properties, including layered structure, variable compositions, tunable acidity and basicity, memory effect, and their ability to transform into various kinds of catalysts, which make them desirable for various types of catalytic applications, such as electrocatalysis, photocatalysis, and thermocatalysis. In addition, the upcycling of lignocellulose biomass and its derived compounds has emerged as a promising strategy for the synthesis of valuable products and fine chemicals. The current review focuses on recent advancements in LDH‐based catalysts for biomass conversion reactions. Specifically, this review highlights the structural features and advantages of LDH and LDH‐derived catalysts for biomass conversion reactions, followed by a detailed summary of the different synthesis methods and different strategies used to tailor their properties. Subsequently, LDH‐based catalysts for hydrogenation, oxidation, coupling, and isomerization reactions of biomass‐derived molecules are critically summarized in a very detailed manner. The review concludes with a discussion on future research directions in this field which anticipates that further exploration of LDH‐based catalysts and integration of cutting‐edge technologies into biomass conversion reactions hold promise for addressing future energy challenges, potentially leading to a carbon‐neutral or carbon‐positive future.

Abstract:Oxygen evolution reaction (OER), as an important process in water splitting has attracted more and more attention in clean energy production and efficient energy storage. Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are typical two-dimensional materials with unique layered structures, high specific surface area, exchangeability of metal ions, diversity of intercalated anions and unique electron distribution, which can serve as catalysts for OER. However, their poor conductivity limits their application in catalysis. In this review, three classes of LDHs materials, including pure LDHs, LDHs derivatives and LDHs composites are systematically reviewed and their development and applications in OER are comprehensively presented. Moreover, further research methods and directions on LDHs as OER catalysts were also prospected. In particular, this review highlights the potential synthesis-structure-property correlations of these layered materials. These will provide guidance for designing efficient OER electrocatalysts and evaluating their performance.

Abstract:CO2 conversion to solar fuels/chemicals is an alluring approach for narrowing critical issues of global warming, environmental pollution, and climate change, caused by excess atmospheric CO2 concentration. Amongst various CO2 conversion strategies, photocatalytic CO2 conversion (PCC) is considered as a promising approach, which utilizes inexpensive sunlight and water with a photocatalyst material. Hence, development of an efficient and a stable photocatalyst is an essential activity for the respective scientific community to upscale the PCC research domain. Until today, metal oxides, such as TiO2, ZnO, etc., are categorized as standard photocatalysts because of their relative stability, abundant availability and low cost. However, their performance is tethered by limited light absorption and somewhat physical properties. Recently, layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have offered an exciting and efficient way for PCC due to their superb CO2 adsorption and moderate photocatalytic properties. The LDH based photocatalysts show marvelous physiochemical and electrical properties like high surface area, stability, and excellent conductivity. In the present review article, a summarized survey is portrayed regarding latest development for LDH based photocatalysts with a focus on synthesis strategies employing various photocatalyst materials, influencing parameters and possible mechanism involved in PCC to useful fuels and chemicals like CO, CH4, CH3OH, and H2.

Abstract:Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) can be used as catalysts and adsorbents due to their high stability, safety, and reusability. The preparation of modified LDHs mainly includes coprecipitation, hydrothermal, ion exchange, calcination recovery, and sol–gel methods. LDH-based materials have high anion exchange capacity, good thermal stability, and a large specific surface area, which can effectively adsorb and remove heavy metal ions, inorganic anions, organic pollutants, and oil pollutants from wastewater. Additionally, they are heterogeneous catalysts and have excellent catalytic effect in the Fenton system, persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes, and electrocatalytic system. This review ends with a discussion of the challenges and future trends of the application of LDHs in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Photocatalytic (PC) and Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting have been regarded as an attainable and sustainable strategy to obtain hydrogen and oxygen. Developing earth-abundant H2/O2-production catalysts with high catalytic activity and robust stability has attracted much attention. Due to the flexible multiple metal cations in the host layers, intercalated anions with interlayer spaces, and good chemical/physical stability, Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have been proved as versatile and robust catalysts/co-catalysts in PC/PEC water splitting. In this article, recent progress in the rational design of LDH-based catalysts toward PC/PEC are well reviewed. Firstly, the characteristic of LDH is briefly introduced. Then, we specifically addressed the recent research efforts toward the application of pristine LDHs and semiconductor/LDH materials as photocatalytic catalysts in photocatalytic H2-generation, O2-evolution and photoelectrochemical water splitting. Finally, the remaining challenges to investigate and optimize the catalyzing ability of LDH based catalysts are stated to promote possible future development of LDH.
