Abstract:We study Anderson localization in graphene with short-range disorder using the real-space Kubo-Greenwood method implemented on graphics processing units. Two models of short-range disorder, namely, the Anderson on-site disorder model and the vacancy defect model, are considered. For graphene with Anderson disorder, localization lengths of quasi-one-dimensional systems with various disorder strengths, edge symmetries, and boundary conditions are calculated using the real-space Kubo-Greenwood formalism, showing excellent agreement with independent transfer matrix calculations and superior computational efficiency. Using these data, we demonstrate the applicability of the one-parameter scaling theory of localization length and propose an analytical expression for the scaling function, which provides a reliable method of computing the two-dimensional localization length. This method is found to be consistent with another widely used method which relates the two-dimensional localization length to the elastic mean free path and the semiclassical conductivity. Abnormal behavior at the charge neutrality point is identified and interpreted to be caused by finite-size effects when the system width is comparable to or smaller than the elastic mean free path. We also demonstrate the finite-size effect when calculating the two-dimensional conductivity in the localized regime and show that a renormalization group beta function consistent with the one-parameter scaling theory can be extracted numerically. For graphene with vacancy disorder, we show that the proposed scaling function of localization length also applies. Lastly, we discuss some ambiguities in calculating the semiclassical conductivity around the charge neutrality point due to the presence of resonant states.
Obtaining Localization Properties Efficiently Using The Kubo-Greenwood Formalism

Abstract:We establish, through numerical calculations and comparisons with a recursive Green's-function based implementation of the Landauer-Buttiker formalism, an efficient method for studying Anderson localization in quasi-one-dimensional and two-dimensional systems using the Kubo-Greenwood formalism. Although the recursive Green's-function method can be used to obtain the localization length of a mesoscopic conductor, it is numerically very expensive for systems that contain a large number of atoms transverse to the transport direction. On the other hand, linear scaling has been achieved with the Kubo-Greenwood method, enabling the study of effectively two-dimensional systems. While the propagating length of the charge carriers will eventually saturate to a finite value in the localized regime, the conductances given by the Kubo-Greenwood method and the recursive Green's-function method agree before the saturation. The converged value of the propagating length is found to be directly proportional to the localization length obtained from the exponential decay of the conductance.

Abstract:Motivated by the recent numerical studies on the Chalker-Coddington network model that found a larger-thanexpected critical exponent of the localization length characterizing the integer quantum Hall plateau transitions, we revisited the exponent calculation in the continuum model and in the lattice model, both projected to the lowest Landau level or subband. Combining scaling results with or without the corrections of an irrelevant length scale, we obtain nu = 2.48 +/- 0.02, which is larger but still consistent with the earlier results in the two models, unlike what was found recently in the network model. The scaling of the total number of conducting states, as determined by the Chern number calculation, is accompanied by an effective irrelevant length scale exponent y = 4.3 in the lattice model, indicating that the irrelevant perturbations are insignificant in the topology number calculation.

Abstract:The localization length of wave functions in one-dimensional disordered systems with periodic modulation is studied. The role of spatial inhomogeneity in the problem is considered. We calculate the localization length varying with energy for the compositionally modulated systems with either the disorder of Anderson distributions or the randomness of periods. The results show that the non-uniformity of disordered systems leads to some different properties of the localized wave functions.

Abstract:We review the physics of many-body localization in models with incommensurate potentials. In particular, we consider one-dimensional quasiperiodic models with single-particle mobility edges. Although a conventional perspective suggests that delocalized states act as a thermalizing bath for the localized states in the presence of of interactions, there is evidence that such systems can display non-ergodicity. This is in part due to the fact that the delocalized states do not have any kind of protection due to symmetry or topology and are thus susceptible to localization. A study of non-interacting incommensurate models shows that they admit extended, partially extended, and fully localized many-body states. These models cannot thermalize dynamically and remain localized upon the introduction of interactions. In particular, for a certain range of energy, the system can host a non-ergodic extended (i.e. metallic) phase in which the energy eigenstates violate the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) but the entanglement entropy obeys volume-law scaling. The level statistics and entanglement growth also indicate the lack of ergodicity in these models. The phenomenon of localization and non-ergodicity in a system with interactions despite the presence of single-particle delocalized states is closely related to the so-called "many-body proximity effect" and can also be observed in models with disorder coupled to systems with delocalized degrees of freedom. Many-body localization in systems with incommensurate potentials (without single-particle mobility edges) have been realized experimentally, and we show how this can be modified to study the the effects of such mobility edges. Demonstrating the failure of thermalization in the presence of a single-particle mobility edge in the thermodynamic limit would indicate a more robust violation of the ETH.

Abstract:Disordered systems provide paradigmatic instances of ergodicity breaking and localization phenomena. Here we explore the dynamics of excitations in a system of Rydberg atoms held in optical tweezers. The finite temperature produces an intrinsic uncertainty in the atomic positions, which translates into quenched correlated disorder in the interatomic interaction strengths. In a simple approach, the dynamics in the many-body Hilbert space can be understood in terms of a one-dimensional Anderson-like model with disorder on every other site, featuring both localized and delocalized states. We conduct an experiment on an eight-atom chain and observe a clear suppression of excitation transfer. Our experiment accesses a regime which is described by a two-dimensional Anderson model on a "trimmed" square lattice. Our results thus provide a concrete example in which the absence of excitation propagation in a many-body system is directly related to Anderson-like localization in the Hilbert space, which is believed to be the mechanism underlying many-body localization.

Localization in two-dimensional fermions with arbitrary pseudospin

Abstract:In condensed matter, limited symmetry constraints allow free fermionic excitations to exist beyond the conventional Weyl and Dirac electrons of high-energy physics. These excitations carry a higher pseudospin, naturally generalizing the Weyl fermion. How do electrons beyond the conventional Dirac and Weyl fermions localize under disorder? In this Letter, we solve the problem of localization of two-dimensional free fermionic excitations carrying an arbitrary pseudospin-$s$. We derive exact analytical expressions for fermionic wavefunctions and exploit their curious mathematical connection to Pascal's triangle to evaluate relevant quantities such as scattering time, renormalized velocity, Cooperon, and magnetoconductivity. We discover that the gapless Cooperon mode solely depends on the pseudospin even when the Fermi surface is composed of multiple pockets, leading to weak localization (antilocalization) behavior for integer (half-integer) $s$, irrespective of the band index. Remarkably, the localization corrections increase with $s$, but the relative localization corrections are found to decrease with $s$, i.e., faster-moving relativistic electrons are less susceptible to disorder effects. Coupled with our elementary analysis on electron-electron interactions, this sheds insights on Anderson and many-body localization in these materials.

Abstract:This work aimed at investigating the Many-Body Localization transition in discrete disordered interacting fermionic systems when the second nearest-neighbor hoppings are considered. We studied small system sizes of spinless fermions located in a one-dimensional disordered optical lattice. Considering the disorder strength, we focused our attention on the eigenvalues and eigenstates properties of the quantum many-body system such as the level-spacing statistics and the Kullback–Leibler divergence and the entropy. As a result, the shapes of the probability distributions showed that the systems undergo delocalized and localized regimes for low and high disorder strengths respectively.

Anderson localization of elementary excitations in disordered binary Bose mixtures: Effects of the Lee-Huang-Yang quantum and thermal corrections

Abstract:We investigate analytically and numerically the Anderson localization of quasiparticles in binary Bose mixtures in the presence of the Lee-Huang-Yang quantum and thermal corrections subjected to correlated disordered potentials. We calculate the density profiles, the Bogoliubov quasiparticles modes, and the localization length in both the mixture and droplet phases. We show that for one-dimensional speckle potentials, the peculiar interplay of disorder and the Lee-Huang-Yang fluctuations may enhance localization in one component while inducing delocalization in the other. Our results reveal also that thermal fluctuations lead to the emergence of two and multiple localization maxima. In the droplet state, our findings uncover that the Anderson localization of quasiparticles is weak in the flat-top region since its excitation modes are restricted to those below the particle-emission threshold.

Abstract:The strong long-range interaction leads to localization in the closed quantum system without disorders. Employing the exact diagonalization method, the author numerically investigates thermalization and many-body localization in translational invariant quantum chains with finite Coulomb interactions. In the computational basis, excluding all trivial degeneracies, the interaction-induced localization is well demonstrated in aspects of level statistics, eigenstate expectation values, and the Anderson localization on graphs constructed of the many-body basis. The nature of localization for generic eigenstates is attributed to the quasi-disorder from the power-law interactions. However, due to the real-space symmetries, the long-time dynamics is dominated by the degenerate eigenstates and eventually reach homogeneity in real space. On the other hand, the entanglement entropy exhibits the size-dependence beyond the area law for the same reason, even deep in the localized state, indicating an incomplete localization in real space.

Optical bounds on many-electron localization

Abstract:We establish rigorous inequalities between different electronic properties linked to optical sum rules, and organize them into weak and strong bounds on three characteristic properties of insulators: electron localization length $\ell$ (the quantum fluctuations in polarization), electric susceptibility $\chi$, and optical gap $E_{\rm G}$. All-electron and valence-only versions of the bounds are given, and the latter are found to be more informative. The bounds on $\ell$ are particularly interesting, as they provide reasonably tight estimates for an ellusive ground-state property -- the average localization length of valence electrons -- from tabulated experimental data: electron density, high-frequency dielectric constant, and optical gap. The localization lengths estimated in this way for several materials follow simple chemical trends, especially for the alkali halides. We also illustrate our findings via analytically solvable harmonic oscillator models, which reveal an intriguing connection to the physics of long-ranged van der Waals forces.

Localization with non-Hermitian off-diagonal disorder

Abstract:In this work, we discuss a non-Hermitian system described via a one-dimensional single-particle tight-binding model, where the non-Hermiticity is governed by random nearest-neighbour tunnellings, such that the left-to-right and right-to-left hopping strengths are unequal. A physical situation of completely real eigenspectrum arises owing to the Hamiltonian's tridiagonal matrix structure under a simple sign conservation of the product of the conjugate nearest-neighbour tunnelling terms. The off-diagonal disorder leads the non-Hermitian system to a delocalization-localization crossover in finite systems. The emergent nature of the crossover is recognized through a finite-size spectral analysis. The system enters into a localized phase for infinitesimal disorder strength in the thermodynamic limit. We perform a careful scaling analysis of localization length, inverse participation ratio (IPR), and energy splitting and report the corresponding scaling exponents. Noticeably, in contrast to the diagonal disorder, the density of states (DOS) has a singularity at E=0 in the presence of the off-diagonal disorder and the corresponding wavefunction remains delocalized for any given disorder strength.

Abstract:We present an exact diagonalization study of the localization properties and the corresponding dynamics for two electrons interacting via on-site Hubbard terms in a finite disordered chain, We obtain three kinds of two-electron states: (i) states almost unchanged by the interaction with the two electrons well separated from each other, (ii) others with the localization length increased by the interaction, and (iii) states for which the interaction decreases the localization length. The physical origin of these states and their distribution in the band is examined from weak to strong interactions.

Abstract:We study the many-body localization aspects of single-particle mobility edges in fermionic systems. We investigate incommensurate lattices and random disorder Anderson models. Many-body localization and quantum nonergodic properties are studied by comparing entanglement and thermal entropy, and by calculating the scaling of subsystem particle number fluctuations, respectively. We establish a nonergodic extended phase as a generic intermediate phase (between purely ergodic extended and nonergodic localized phases) for the many-body localization transition of non-interacting fermions where the entanglement entropy manifests a volume law (`extended'), but there are large fluctuations in the subsystem particle numbers (`nonergodic'). We argue such an intermediate phase scenario may continue holding even for the many-body localization in the presence of interactions as well. We find for many-body states in non-interacting 1d Aubry-Andre and 3d Anderson models that the entanglement entropy density and the normalized particle-number fluctuation have discontinuous jumps at the localization transition where the entanglement entropy is sub-thermal but obeys the "volume law". In the vicinity of the localization transition we find that both the entanglement entropy and the particle number fluctuations obey a single parameter scaling. We argue using numerical and theoretical results that such a critical scaling behavior should persist for the interacting many-body localization problem with important consequences. Our work provides persuasive evidence in favor of there being two transitions in many-body systems with single-particle mobility edges, the first one indicating a transition from the purely localized nonergodic many-body localized phase to a nonergodic extended many-body metallic phase, and the second one being a transition eventually to the usual ergodic many-body extended phase.
Many-body localization of 1D disordered impenetrable two-component fermions

Abstract:We study effects of disorder on eigenstates of 1D two-component fermions with infinitely strong Hubbard repulsion. We demonstrate that the spin-independent (potential) disorder reduces the problem to the one-particle Anderson localization taking place at arbitrarily weak disorder. In contrast, a random magnetic field can cause reentrant many-body localization-delocalization transitions. Surprisingly weak magnetic field destroys one-particle localization caused by not too strong potential disorder, whereas at much stronger fields the states are many-body localized. We present numerical support of these conclusions.

Abstract:We calculated numerically the localization length index $\nu$ for the Chalker-Coddington model of the plateau-plateau transitions in the quantum Hall effect. By taking into account finite size effects we have obtained $\nu = 2.593 \pm 0.0297$. The calculations were carried out by two different programs that produced close results, each one within the error bars of the other. We also checked the possibility of logarithmic corrections to finite size effects and found, that they come with much larger error bars for $\nu$.
