Abstract:Recent changing patterns of global climate have turned out to be a severe hazard to the horticulture crops production. A wide range of biotic and abiotic stresses often affect plants due to their sessile nature. Horticultural crop losses are mainly caused by abiotic factors such as drought, salt, heat, cold, floods, and ultraviolet radiation. For coping up with these adversities, well-developed mechanisms have been evolved in plants, which play a role in perceiving stress signals and enabling optimal growth responses. Interestingly, the use of phytohormones for suppressing the impact of abiotic stress has gained much attention in recent decades. For circumvention of stress at various levels, including physiological, molecular, as well as biochemical, a sophisticated mechanism is reported to be provided by the phytohormones, thus labeling these phytohormones a significant role in plant growth and development. Phytohormones can improves tolerance against abiotic stresses by increasing seed germination, seedling growth, leaf photosynthesis, root growth, and antioxidant enzymes and reducing the accumulation of reactive oxygen species, malonaldehyde, and electrolyte leakage. Recent discoveries highlight the significant role of a variety of phytohormones including melatonin (MEL), Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), jasmonic acid (JA), salicylic acid (SA), brassinosteroids (BRs), and strigolactones (SLs) in abiotic stress tolerance enhancement of horticultural plants. Thus, current review is aimed to summarize the developmental concepts regarding role of phytohormones in abiotic-stress mitigation, mainly in horticultural crops, along with the description of recent studies which identified the role of different phytohormones in stressed environments. Hence, such a review will help in paving the path for sustainable agriculture growth via involvement of phytohormones in enhancement of abiotic stress tolerance of horticultural crops.

Abstract:Reductions in crop yields brought about by abiotic stress are expected to increase as climate change, and other factors, generate harsher environmental conditions in regions traditionally used for cultivation. Although breeding and genetically modified and edited organisms have generated many varieties with greater abiotic stress tolerance, their practical use depends on lengthy processes, such as biological cycles and legal aspects. On the other hand, a non-genetic approach to improve crop yield in stress conditions involves the exogenous application of natural compounds, including plant metabolites. In this review, we examine the recent literature related to the application of different natural primary (proline, l-tryptophan, glutathione, and citric acid) and secondary (polyols, ascorbic acid, lipoic acid, glycine betaine, α-tocopherol, and melatonin) plant metabolites in improving tolerance to abiotic stress. We focus on drought, saline, heavy metal, and temperature as environmental parameters that are forecast to become more extreme or frequent as the climate continues to alter. The benefits of such applications are often evaluated by measuring their effects on metabolic, biochemical, and morphological parameters in a variety of crop plants, which usually result in improved yields when applied in greenhouse conditions or in the field. As this strategy has proven to be an effective way to raise plant tolerance to abiotic stress, we also discuss the prospect of its widespread implementation in the short term.

Abstract:Horticultural crops are greatly disturbed by severe abiotic stress conditions. This is considered one of the major threats to the healthy lives of the human population. Salicylic acid (SA) is famous as one of the multifunctional phytohormones that are widely found in plants. It is also an important bio-stimulator involved in the regulation of growth and the developmental stages of horticultural crops. The productivity of horticultural crops has been improved with the supplemental use of even small amounts of SA. It has good capability to reduce oxidative injuries that occur from the over-production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), potentially elevated photosynthesis, chlorophyll pigments, and stomatal regulation. Physiological and biochemical processes have revealed that SA enhances signaling molecules, enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants, osmolytes, and secondary metabolites activities within the cell compartments of plants. Numerous genomic approaches have also explored that SA regulates transcriptions profiling, transcriptional apprehensions, genomic expression, and metabolism of stress-related genes. Many plant biologists have been working on SA and its functioning in plants; however, its involvement in the enhancement of tolerance against abiotic stress in horticultural crops is still unidentified and needs more attention. Therefore, the current review is focused on a detailed exploration of SA in physiological and biochemical processes in horticultural crops subjected to abiotic stress. The current information is comprehensive and aims to be more supportive of the development of higher-yielding germplasm against abiotic stress.

Abstract:An ever-expanding world population and globally changing diet preferences have put considerable pressure on the worldwide agricultural community to produce more food, feed and bio-energy crops. As a result, marginal land areas will need to be used to meet the increasing requirement of future generations, especially in developing countries. These marginal areas commonly impose abiotic stresses on crops due to factors such as salinity, drought, temperature extremes, flooding, low nutrients and aluminium or heavy metal toxicity. As a consequence, the growth and yield of crops from such areas is typically low and their quality poor, limiting farmer income. Therefore, it is important to gain knowledge and insight of the intrinsic flexibility by which plants respond to these abiotic stresses. Throughout evolution, plants have developed a dazzling array of complex strategies for coping with abiotic stresses and adapting to a wide range of environments. Biochemical, physiological and molecular genetic studies of these strategies have been initiated, and, as in many plant research fields, those on Arabidopsis pave the way. However, the contributions in this special issue illustrate the progress made on other species and highlight the insights into this research field. The calcineurin B-like (CBL) and CBL-interacting protein kinase (CIPK) signalling pathway is a flexible, Ca signalling network that allows plants to fine-tune their stress mitigation responses. Thoday-Kennedy et al. (2015) provide a critical account of our current knowledge of CBL and CIPK interactions and their roles in ion transport under abiotic stress. Han et al. (2014) review the signalling pathways and key mechanisms of sodium detoxification mediated by ion transporters and antiporters, and give an overview of practical strategies and methodologies for functional characterisation of high-affinity potassium transporters. In addition, they discuss how to alleviate salt stress through the exogenous application of gibberellins and nitric oxide. Li et al. (2014a) focus on salt cress (Thellungiella halophila), a close relative of Arabidopsis, a species that has emerged as a model halophyte for the molecular elucidation of abiotic stress tolerance. Its seed germination is highly regulated by environmental and hormonal signals; thus, it provides opportunities to study how such external conditions are sensed. The mung bean (Vigna radiata) is salinity-sensitive and suffers considerably from soil salinity; as a consequence, reductions in germination, chlorophyll content, vigour and yield have been reported. Patel et al. (2014) draw attention to interactions that occur with this species in the rhizosphere and report on those with halotolerant Bacillus spp. These species were isolated from saline habitats and alleviate salt stress in mung beans thereby increasing germination and partially restoring root and shoot growth. Xuan et al. (2014) characterise the response of seedlings of yellowand black-seeded rape to salt and cadmium stresses, and show how tolerance is associated with flavonoid content. Li et al. (2014b) demonstrate how improvement of endogenous polyamine levels by exogenous spermidine application may promote drought tolerance of plants. Waterlogging is also a major constraint to crop production in many parts of the world due to anoxic conditions in the root zone. Najeeb et al. Abstract:The recent rapid climate changes and increasing global population have led to an increased incidence of abiotic stress and decreased crop productivity. Environmental stresses, such as temperature, drought, nutrient deficiency, salinity, and heavy metal stresses, are major challenges for agriculture, and they lead to a significant reduction in crop growth and productivity. Abiotic stress is a very complex phenomenon, involving a variety of physiological and biochemical changes in plant cells. Plants exposed to abiotic stress exhibit enhanced levels of ROS (reactive oxygen species), which are highly reactive and toxic and affect the biosynthesis of chlorophyll, photosynthetic capacity, and carbohydrate, protein, lipid, and antioxidant enzyme activities. Transgenic breeding offers a suitable alternative to conventional breeding to achieve plant genetic improvements. Over the last two decades, genetic engineering/transgenic breeding techniques demonstrated remarkable developments in manipulations of the genes for the induction of desired characteristics into transgenic plants. Transgenic approaches provide us with access to identify the candidate genes, miRNAs, and transcription factors (TFs) that are involved in specific plant processes, thus enabling an integrated knowledge of the molecular and physiological mechanisms influencing the plant tolerance and productivity. The accuracy and precision of this phenomenon assures great success in the future of plant improvements. Hence, transgenic breeding has proven to be a promising tool for abiotic stress improvement in crops. This review focuses on the potential and successful applications, recent progress, and future perspectives of transgenic breeding for improving abiotic stress tolerance and productivity in plants.

Abstract:<p class="a-plus-plus">Abiotic stresses and soil nutrient limitations are major environmental conditions that reduce plant growth, productivity and quality. Plants have evolved mechanisms to perceive these environmental challenges, transmit the stress signals within cells as well as between cells and tissues, and make appropriate adjustments in their growth and development in order to survive and reproduce. In recent years, significant progress has been made on many fronts of the stress signaling research, particularly in understanding the downstream signaling events that culminate at the activation of stress- and nutrient limitation-responsive genes, cellular ion homeostasis, and growth adjustment. However, the revelation of the early events of stress signaling, particularly the identification of primary stress sensors, still lags behind. In this review, we summarize recent work on the genetic and molecular mechanisms of plant abiotic stress and nutrient limitation sensing and signaling and discuss new directions for future studies.</p>

Abstract:Horticultural crop production is severely threatened by the changing global climate, as plants are vulnerable to a range of abiotic and biotic stresses. Abiotic stressors, such as floods, UV radiation, heat, drought, salt, and cold, often lead to crop damage and loss. However, plants have evolved sophisticated mechanisms enabling them to respond effectively to stressful conditions, thereby enhancing their ability to overcome challenges. They have evolved complex systems that detect stress signals and enable optimum growth responses, thus enabling them to survive in harsh environments. Due to their potential to mitigate the adverse impacts of abiotic stress, phytohormones have garnered significant research attention in recent years. Current findings have highlighted the crucial role that diverse phytohormones play in strengthening horticulture plants resistant to abiotic stress. Furthermore, plant growth regulators that function similarly to phytohormones, such as melatonin, have also been proven to be effective methods for mitigating the adverse impacts of both biotic and abiotic stress on fruit crops. A comprehensive understanding of the complex hormonal interactions that occur in a range of horticultural crops when exposed to biotic stress is a crucial summary of the function of phytohormones like plant growth regulators in decreasing abiotic stress and their associated crosstalk in the growth and development of plants under repeated stressful situations. The primary objective of this investigation is to focus on the fundamental advancements in the abiotic stress tolerance of fruit crops through the utilization of a diverse array of hormones including gibberellin (GA), brassinosteroids (BRs), abscisic acid (ABA), salicylic acid (SA), strigolactones (SLs), jasmonates (JAs), and melatonin (MEL). The insights gained from this study have the potential to facilitate sustainable plant growth, as hormones play a critical role in enhancing the abiotic stress resilience of horticultural crops.

Abstract:Abiotic stresses, such as low or high temperature, deficient or excessive water, high salinity, heavy metals, and ultraviolet radiation, are hostile to plant growth and development, leading to great crop yield penalty worldwide. It is getting imperative to equip crops with multistress tolerance to relieve the pressure of environmental changes and to meet the demand of population growth, as different abiotic stresses usually arise together in the field. The feasibility is raised as land plants actually have established more generalized defenses against abiotic stresses, including the cuticle outside plants, together with unsaturated fatty acids, reactive species scavengers, molecular chaperones, and compatible solutes inside cells. In stress response, they are orchestrated by a complex regulatory network involving upstream signaling molecules including stress hormones, reactive oxygen species, gasotransmitters, polyamines, phytochromes, and calcium, as well as downstream gene regulation factors, particularly transcription factors. In this review, we aimed at presenting an overview of these defensive systems and the regulatory network, with an eye to their practical potential via genetic engineering and/or exogenous application.

Abstract:Biostimulants are agronomic tools that have been gaining importance in the reduction of fertilizer applications. They can improve the yield of cropping systems or preventing crop yield losses under abiotic stresses. Biostimulants can be composed of organic and inorganic materials and most of the components are still unknown. The characterization of the molecular mechanism of action of biostimulants can be obtained using the omics approach, which includes the determination of transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolomic changes in treated plants. This review reports an overview of the biostimulants, taking stock on the recent molecular studies that are contributing to clarify their action mechanisms. The omics studies can provide an overall evaluation of a crop’s response, connecting the molecular changes with the physiological pathways activated and the performance with or without stress conditions. The multiple responses of plants treated with biostimulants must be correlated with the phenotype changes. In this context, it is also crucial to design an adequate experimental plan and statistical data analysis, in order to find robust correlations between biostimulant treatments and crop performance.

Abstract:Abiotic stress is the adverse effect of any abiotic factor on a plant in a given environment, impacting plants’ growth and development. These stress factors, such as drought, salinity, and extreme temperatures, are often interrelated or in conjunction with each other. Plants have evolved mechanisms to sense these environmental challenges and make adjustments to their growth in order to survive and reproduce. In this review, we summarized recent studies on plant stress sensing and its regulatory mechanism, emphasizing signal transduction and regulation at multiple levels. Then we presented several strategies to improve plant growth under stress based on current progress. Finally, we discussed the implications of research on plant response to abiotic stresses for high-yielding crops and agricultural sustainability. Studying stress signaling and regulation is critical to understand abiotic stress responses in plants to generate stress-resistant crops and improve agricultural sustainability.

Abstract:Climate change has increased the overall impact of abiotic stress conditions such as drought, salinity, and extreme temperatures on plants. Abiotic stress adversely affects the growth, development, crop yield, and productivity of plants. When plants are subjected to various environmental stress conditions, the balance between the production of reactive oxygen species and its detoxification through antioxidant mechanisms is disturbed. The extent of disturbance depends on the severity, intensity, and duration of abiotic stress. The equilibrium between the production and elimination of reactive oxygen species is maintained due to both enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidative defense mechanisms. Non-enzymatic antioxidants include both lipid-soluble (α-tocopherol and β-carotene) and water-soluble (glutathione, ascorbate, etc.) antioxidants. Ascorbate peroxidase (APX), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione reductase (GR) are major enzymatic antioxidants that are essential for ROS homeostasis. In this review, we intend to discuss various antioxidative defense approaches used to improve abiotic stress tolerance in plants and the mechanism of action of the genes or enzymes involved.

Abstract:Abiotic stresses pose significant threat to horticultural crop production worldwide. These stresses adversely affect plant growth, development, and ultimately declined crop growth, yield and quality. In recent years, plant scientists have been actively investigating innovative strategies to enhance abiotic stress resilience in crops, and one promising avenue of research focuses on the use of brassinosteroids (BRs). BRs are a class of plant hormones that play crucial roles in various physiological processes, including cell elongation, differentiation, and stress responses. They have emerged as potent regulators of plant growth and development, and their role in improving abiotic stress tolerance is gaining considerable attention. BRs have been shown to mitigate the negative effects of abiotic stresses by modulating key physiological and biochemical processes, including stomatal regulation, antioxidant defense, osmotic adjustment, and nutrient uptake. Abiotic stresses disrupt numerous physiological functions and lead to undesirable phenotypic traits in plants. The use of BRs as a tool to improve crop resilience offers significant promise for sustainable agriculture in the face of increasing abiotic stresses caused by climate change. By unraveling the phenomenon of BRs, this review emphasizes the potential of BRs as an innovative approach for boosting abiotic stress tolerance and improving the overall productivity and quality of horticultural crops. Further research and field trials are necessary to fully harness the benefits of BRs and translate these findings into practical applications for crop production systems.

Abstract:Fruit cultivation is one of the remunerative enterprises in the present situation as it not only provides nutritional security along with vegetables, but also helps to create lot of employment opportunities in addition to increase the income of the fruit growers. Though we produce large quantity of fruits, still productivity of most of the fruit crops are far inferior compared to other developed countries. This may be attributed to several abiotic stresses encountered at critical stages of fruit cultivation. These abiotic stresses are more aggravated in recent years due to climate change which is clearly visible in terms of increased frequency of such stresses, their intensity, and duration. Environmental stresses such as salinity, water deficiency, high water level, cold weather, and low/high temperature affect plant growth and decreases horticultural crop’s productivity worldwide. It is important to improve stress tolerance of the crop plant to increase crop yield under stress conditions and reduce the yield gaps. Drought and salinity stress can cause a variety of symptoms common to other major stresses such as light, heat, and nutrient deficiency and the symptoms are very specific to time and geographical location. In many of the fruit crops, there are several combinations of mechanisms which can help to tolerate most of these stresses. Since, abiotic stress tolerance in most of the crops is controlled by multigenes; it is very difficult to understand the stress tolerance at molecular level. Crops have evolved several mechanisms to overcome such abiotic stresses through various morphological, physiological, and biochemical mechanisms. Understanding such mechanisms may help in developing varieties which are tolerant to such stresses either through conventional breeding methods or by nontraditional methods. However, several strategies have been developed from management view point to cope up with stresses and maintain yield and quality of horticultural produce. These stresses may be alleviated by altering the pruning time to avoid stress situations at critical stages of growth. Use of some chemicals like antitranspirants, osmoprotectants, biofertilizers, practice of mulching, etc. are important practices to be followed to alleviate the adverse effects of abiotic stresses. Use of drought, salt, and flood tolerant rootstocks seems to be a good strategy to overcome the ill effects of those stresses. The advanced irrigation methods like partial root zone drying need to be implemented under limited water conditions. Use of some microbial inoculants is also reported to offer some degree of stress tolerance in certain fruit crops.

Abstract:Abiotic stress is a primary threat to fulfill the demand of agricultural production to feed the world in coming decades. Plants reduce growth and development process during stress conditions, which ultimately affect the yield. In stress conditions, plants develop various stress mechanism to face the magnitude of stress challenges, although that is not enough to protect them. Therefore, many strategies have been used to produce abiotic stress tolerance crop plants, among them, abscisic acid (ABA) phytohormone engineering could be one of the methods of choice. ABA is an isoprenoid phytohormone, which regulates various physiological processes ranging from stomatal opening to protein storage and provides adaptation to many stresses like drought, salt, and cold stresses. ABA is also called an important messenger that acts as the signaling mediator for regulating the adaptive response of plants to different environmental stress conditions. In this review, we will discuss the role of ABA in response to abiotic stress at the molecular level and ABA signaling. The review also deals with the effect of ABA in respect to gene expression.

Abstract:In recent times, the demand for food and feed for the ever-increasing population has achieved unparalleled importance, which cannot afford crop yield loss. Now-a-days, the unpleasant situation of abiotic stress triggers crop improvement by affecting the different metabolic pathways of yield and quality advances worldwide. The application of phytohormones like the classical auxins, cytokinins, ethylene, and gibberellins, as well as more recent members including brassinosteroids, jasmonic acids, etc., along with both macro and micronutrients, have enhanced significant attention in creating key benefits such as reduction of ionic toxicity, improving oxidative stress, maintaining water-related balance, and gaseous exchange modification during abiotic stress conditions. Majority of phytohormones maintain homeostasis inside the cell by detoxifying the ROS and enhancing the antioxidant enzyme activities which can enhance tolerance in plants. At the molecular level, phytohormones activate stress signaling pathways or genes regulated by abscisic acid (ABA), salicylic acid (SA), Jasmonic acid (JA), and ethylene. The various stresses primarily cause nutrient deficiency and reduce the nutrient uptake of plants. The application of plant nutrients like N, K, Ca, and Mg are also involved in ROS scavenging activities through elevating antioxidants properties and finally decreasing cell membrane leakage and increasing the photosynthetic ability by resynthesizing the chlorophyll pigment. This present review highlighted the alteration of metabolic activities caused by abiotic stress in various crops, the changes of vital functions through the application of exogenous phytohormones and nutrition, as well as their interaction.

Abstract:Genetic engineering technique offers myriads of applications in improvement of horticultural crops for biotic and abiotic stress tolerance, and produce quality enhancement. During last two decades, a large number of transgenic horticultural crops has been developed and more are underway. A number of genes including natural and synthetic Cry genes, protease inhibitors, trypsin inhibitors and cystatin genes have been used to incorporate insect and nematode resistance. For providing protection against fungal and bacterial diseases, various genes like chitinase, glucanase, osmotin, defensin and pathogenesis-related genes are being transferred to many horticultural crops world over. RNAi technique has been found quite successful in inducing virus resistance in horticultural crops in addition to coat protein genes. Abiotic stresses such as drought, heat and salinity adversely affect production and productivity of horticultural crops and a number of genes encoding for biosynthesis of stress protecting compounds including mannitol, glycine betaine and heat shock proteins have been employed for abiotic stress tolerance besides various transcription factors like DREB1, MAPK, WRKY, etc. Antisense gene and RNAi technologies have revolutionized the pace of improvement of horticultural crops, particularly ornamentals for color modification, increasing shelf-life and reducing post-harvest losses. Precise genome editing tools, particularly CRISPR/Cas9, have been efficiently applied in tomato, petunia, citrus, grape, potato and apple for gene mutation, repression, activation and epigenome editing. This review provides comprehensive overview to draw the attention of researchers for better understanding of genetic engineering advancements in imparting biotic and abiotic stress tolerance as well as on improving various traits related to quality, texture, plant architecture modification, increasing shelf-life, etc. in different horticultural crops.

Impact of Plant-Associated Microbial Communities on Host Plants Under Abiotic Stresses

Abstract:Plants face various biotic and abiotic environmental stresses in their lifetime. These environmental impacts reduce plant growth and productivity. Out of abiotic stressors, drought, salt, heat, and heavy metal ion contamination are the major challenges faced by plants. For overcoming these challenges, plants adopt certain physiological and biochemical changes. These changes include a variation in an aspect ratio of root-shoot length, leaf wilting, leaf abscission, generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), altered relative water content, and accumulation of free radicals that can disrupt cellular homeostasis, thereby affecting cell viability. Plants also produce stress hormones, namely, abscisic acid and stress ethylene which induce closure of leaf stomata leading to reduced water loss from the plants and withstand various molecular and metabolic changes. Plants undergo physiological and metabolic changes, activating signal transduction mechanism to re-establish cellular homeostasis to generate tolerance against various abiotic stressors. The expression of stress-responsive genes is regulated not only by protein regulators but also by various regulatory RNAs.The deleterious impacts of abiotic stressors in plants can be overcome by adopting different agriculture practices along with genetic engineering approaches. However, these approaches are highly technical, time-consuming, and labor intensive and, therefore, are challenging to practice. One potential alternative to improve plant growth under abiotic stressors can be the application of plant-associated microbial communities which not only provide stress tolerance to the plants by producing a wide range of metabolites and enzymes that help plants to withstand various biotic and abiotic stresses but also improve crop productivity. Microbes mediate induction of physical and chemical changes in plants at a physical, biochemical, or molecular level in the presence of abiotic stressors to alleviate their deleterious effect, a process termed as induced systemic tolerance (IST). In this chapter, we present an elaborated account of the impact of plant-associated microbial communities on the host plants challenged to the abiotic stresses.

Abstract:Salicylic acid (SA) has been recognized as a promising molecule for improving abiotic stress tolerance in plants due to its ability to enhance antioxidant defense system, and promote root architecture system. Recent research has focused on uncovering the mechanisms by which SA confers abiotic stress tolerance in horticultural crops. SA has been shown to act as a signaling molecule that triggers various physiological and morphological responses in plants. SA regulates the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Moreover, it can also act as signaling molecule that regulate the expression of stress-responsive genes. SA can directly interact with various hormones, proteins and enzymes involved in abiotic stress tolerance. SA regulates the antioxidant enzymes activities that scavenge toxic ROS, thereby reducing oxidative damage in plants. SA can also activate protein kinases that phosphorylate and activate transcription factors involved in stress responses. Understanding these mechanisms is essential for developing effective strategies to improve crop resilience in the face of changing environmental conditions. Current information provides valuable insights for farmers and plant researchers, offering new strategies to enhance crop resilience and productivity in the face of environmental challenges. By harnessing the power of SA and its signaling pathways, farmers can develop more effective stress management techniques and optimize crop performance. Plant researchers can also explore innovative approaches to breed or engineer crops with enhanced stress tolerance, thereby contributing to sustainable agriculture and food security.

Abstract:Global climate change-induced abiotic stresses (e.g., drought, salinity, extreme temperatures, heavy metals, and UV radiation) have destabilized the fragile agroecosystems and impaired plant performance and thereby reducing crop productivity and quality. Biostimulants, as a promising and eco-friendly approach, are widely used to address environmental concerns and fulfill the need for developing sustainable/modern agriculture. Current knowledge revealed that plant and animal derived stimulants (e.g., seaweeds and phytoextracts, humic substances, and protein hydrolysate) as well as microbial stimulants (e.g., plant beneficial bacteria or fungi) have great potential to elicit plant tolerance to various abiotic stresses and thus enhancing plant growth and performance-related parameters (such as root growth/diameter, flowering, nutrient use efficiency/translocation, soil water holding capacity, and microbial activity). However, to successfully implement biostimulant-based agriculture in the field under changing climate, the understanding of agricultural functions and action mechanism of biostimulants coping with various abiotic stresses at physicochemical, metabolic, and molecular levels is needed. Therefore, this review attempts to unravel the underlying mechanisms of action mediated by diverse biostimulants in relation to abiotic stress alleviation as well as to discuss the current challenges in their commercialization and implementation in agriculture under changing climate conditions.
