Abstract:In order to study the physiological and biochemical response mechanism of Rhododendron ova?tum to drought stress during its seed germination stage,the dynamics of germination rate,antioxidant enzyme activities,organic osmoregulation substances,malondialdehyde ( MDA) and relative permeability of cell mem?brane were analyzed under drought stress simulated by polyethylene glycol (PEG) ?6000.The results showed that germination rate of R.ovatum was significantly decreased and inhibited when PEG stress concentration was≥15%.At 5%-20% PEG stress concentration,SOD and CAT activities were increased when PEG was≤15%but decreased when PEG was> 15%,POD activity was continuously increased with the increase of drought stress degree.In comparison with no stress (CK) and light drought stress,the contents of proline,soluble sugar and MDA and relative permeability of cell membrane increased significantly. The results indicated that seed germination of R.ovatum was tolerant to drought in some degree under light water stress.The seed germination of R.ovatum was inhibited by moderate water stress (15% PEG),but the seeds could adapt to drought stress by changing their own physiological conditions.

Abstract:Abiotic stresses such as drought, salinity, and extreme temperatures pose significant challenges to plant growth, development, and productivity. Understanding the physiological mechanisms underlying plant adaptation to these stresses is crucial for developing strategies to enhance crop resilience and ensure food security. This review explores the key physiological responses of plants to abiotic stress, including stress perception and signaling, osmotic adjustment, antioxidant defense, and hormonal regulation. We highlight recent advances in our understanding of these mechanisms and discuss their implications for crop improvement. Additionally, we examine the role of genetic and epigenetic modifications in enhancing stress tolerance and the potential of biotechnological approaches to develop stress-resistant crop varieties. By integrating physiological insights with modern breeding and biotechnological techniques, we aim to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of knowledge and future directions in plant adaptation to abiotic stress.

Abstract:The shoot apical meristem (SAM) serves as a non-drying reservoir of pluripotent stem cells to supply new daughter cells forming above-ground tissues and organs such as leaves, stems, flowers and fruits throughout the life cycle of plants. Accordingly, the homeostasis control of stem cell division and differentiation must be an essential core mechanism for harmonic growth and development of plants as multicellular higher eukaryotes. Unlike animals, plants are sessile organisms and thus constantly face environmental factors, including abiotic stresses. Therefore, post-embryonic development derived from stem cells in the SAM likely interacts with surrounding abiotic stresses for plant adaptation and plastic development. For this reason, this review provides the most recent findings regarding comprehensive signaling networks involved in stem cell maintenance in the SAM, and then describes how stem cell signaling is related with abiotic stress response through involvement of phytohormones and reactive oxygen species in the SAM.

Abstract:<p class="a-plus-plus">Abiotic stresses and soil nutrient limitations are major environmental conditions that reduce plant growth, productivity and quality. Plants have evolved mechanisms to perceive these environmental challenges, transmit the stress signals within cells as well as between cells and tissues, and make appropriate adjustments in their growth and development in order to survive and reproduce. In recent years, significant progress has been made on many fronts of the stress signaling research, particularly in understanding the downstream signaling events that culminate at the activation of stress- and nutrient limitation-responsive genes, cellular ion homeostasis, and growth adjustment. However, the revelation of the early events of stress signaling, particularly the identification of primary stress sensors, still lags behind. In this review, we summarize recent work on the genetic and molecular mechanisms of plant abiotic stress and nutrient limitation sensing and signaling and discuss new directions for future studies.</p>

Abstract:To adapt to fluctuations in light intensity, temperatures, and water/nutrient availability, plants have to dynamically and flexibly adjust their metabolism and growth processes. Specifically, hormone synthesis and signal transduction promptly respond to environmental stimuli. Understanding the mechanisms by which plants adapt to their environment is a hot spot of plant biology research. In this editorial, we provide a summary of recent advances in the roles and underlying mechanisms of abscisic acid (ABA) in coping with various stresses. Additionally, we highlight the functions of newly discovered hormones such as strigolactone. Furthermore, we emphasize future research directions aimed at gaining a deeper understanding of how plants maintain cellular homeostasis with the goal of improving crop yield in the background of global change.

Abstract:Abiotic stress is a primary threat to fulfill the demand of agricultural production to feed the world in coming decades. Plants reduce growth and development process during stress conditions, which ultimately affect the yield. In stress conditions, plants develop various stress mechanism to face the magnitude of stress challenges, although that is not enough to protect them. Therefore, many strategies have been used to produce abiotic stress tolerance crop plants, among them, abscisic acid (ABA) phytohormone engineering could be one of the methods of choice. ABA is an isoprenoid phytohormone, which regulates various physiological processes ranging from stomatal opening to protein storage and provides adaptation to many stresses like drought, salt, and cold stresses. ABA is also called an important messenger that acts as the signaling mediator for regulating the adaptive response of plants to different environmental stress conditions. In this review, we will discuss the role of ABA in response to abiotic stress at the molecular level and ABA signaling. The review also deals with the effect of ABA in respect to gene expression.

Abstract:Abiotic stress is the primary cause of crop loss worldwide, reducing average yields for most major crop plants by more than 50%. Among abiotic stress, drought, salinity, high temperature, and cold are major adverse environmental factors that limit the crop production and productivity by inhibiting the genetic potential of the plant. So, it leads to complete change of morphological, physiological, biochemical, and molecular behavior of the plants and modifies regular metabolism of life, thereby adversely affecting plant productivity. Major effects of the drought, salinity, extreme temperatures, and cold stress are often interconnected and form similar cellular damage. To adopt plants with various abiotic stresses, plants can initiate a number of molecular, cellular, and physiological changes in its system. Sensors are molecules that perceive the initial stress signal from the outside of the plant system and initiate a signaling cascade to transmit the signal and activate nuclear transcription factors to induce the expression of specific sets of genes. Understanding this molecular and physiological basis of plant responses produced because of abiotic stress will help in molecular and modern breeding applications toward developing improved stress-tolerant crops. This review presents an overview and implications of physiological and molecular aspects of main abiotic stress, i.e., drought, heat, salt, and cold. Potential strategies to improve abiotic tolerance in crops are discussed.

Abstract:Recent changing patterns of global climate have turned out to be a severe hazard to the horticulture crops production. A wide range of biotic and abiotic stresses often affect plants due to their sessile nature. Horticultural crop losses are mainly caused by abiotic factors such as drought, salt, heat, cold, floods, and ultraviolet radiation. For coping up with these adversities, well-developed mechanisms have been evolved in plants, which play a role in perceiving stress signals and enabling optimal growth responses. Interestingly, the use of phytohormones for suppressing the impact of abiotic stress has gained much attention in recent decades. For circumvention of stress at various levels, including physiological, molecular, as well as biochemical, a sophisticated mechanism is reported to be provided by the phytohormones, thus labeling these phytohormones a significant role in plant growth and development. Phytohormones can improves tolerance against abiotic stresses by increasing seed germination, seedling growth, leaf photosynthesis, root growth, and antioxidant enzymes and reducing the accumulation of reactive oxygen species, malonaldehyde, and electrolyte leakage. Recent discoveries highlight the significant role of a variety of phytohormones including melatonin (MEL), Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), jasmonic acid (JA), salicylic acid (SA), brassinosteroids (BRs), and strigolactones (SLs) in abiotic stress tolerance enhancement of horticultural plants. Thus, current review is aimed to summarize the developmental concepts regarding role of phytohormones in abiotic-stress mitigation, mainly in horticultural crops, along with the description of recent studies which identified the role of different phytohormones in stressed environments. Hence, such a review will help in paving the path for sustainable agriculture growth via involvement of phytohormones in enhancement of abiotic stress tolerance of horticultural crops.

Abstract:An ever-expanding world population and globally changing diet preferences have put considerable pressure on the worldwide agricultural community to produce more food, feed and bio-energy crops. As a result, marginal land areas will need to be used to meet the increasing requirement of future generations, especially in developing countries. These marginal areas commonly impose abiotic stresses on crops due to factors such as salinity, drought, temperature extremes, flooding, low nutrients and aluminium or heavy metal toxicity. As a consequence, the growth and yield of crops from such areas is typically low and their quality poor, limiting farmer income. Therefore, it is important to gain knowledge and insight of the intrinsic flexibility by which plants respond to these abiotic stresses. Throughout evolution, plants have developed a dazzling array of complex strategies for coping with abiotic stresses and adapting to a wide range of environments. Biochemical, physiological and molecular genetic studies of these strategies have been initiated, and, as in many plant research fields, those on Arabidopsis pave the way. However, the contributions in this special issue illustrate the progress made on other species and highlight the insights into this research field. The calcineurin B-like (CBL) and CBL-interacting protein kinase (CIPK) signalling pathway is a flexible, Ca signalling network that allows plants to fine-tune their stress mitigation responses. Thoday-Kennedy et al. (2015) provide a critical account of our current knowledge of CBL and CIPK interactions and their roles in ion transport under abiotic stress. Han et al. (2014) review the signalling pathways and key mechanisms of sodium detoxification mediated by ion transporters and antiporters, and give an overview of practical strategies and methodologies for functional characterisation of high-affinity potassium transporters. In addition, they discuss how to alleviate salt stress through the exogenous application of gibberellins and nitric oxide. Li et al. (2014a) focus on salt cress (Thellungiella halophila), a close relative of Arabidopsis, a species that has emerged as a model halophyte for the molecular elucidation of abiotic stress tolerance. Its seed germination is highly regulated by environmental and hormonal signals; thus, it provides opportunities to study how such external conditions are sensed. The mung bean (Vigna radiata) is salinity-sensitive and suffers considerably from soil salinity; as a consequence, reductions in germination, chlorophyll content, vigour and yield have been reported. Patel et al. (2014) draw attention to interactions that occur with this species in the rhizosphere and report on those with halotolerant Bacillus spp. These species were isolated from saline habitats and alleviate salt stress in mung beans thereby increasing germination and partially restoring root and shoot growth. Xuan et al. (2014) characterise the response of seedlings of yellowand black-seeded rape to salt and cadmium stresses, and show how tolerance is associated with flavonoid content. Li et al. (2014b) demonstrate how improvement of endogenous polyamine levels by exogenous spermidine application may promote drought tolerance of plants. Waterlogging is also a major constraint to crop production in many parts of the world due to anoxic conditions in the root zone. Najeeb et al. Abstract:Drought stress is a condition that in specific climate contexts results in insufficient water availability and often limits plant productivity through perturbing development and reducing plant growth and survival. Plants use senescence of old leaves and dormancy of buds and seeds to survive extreme environmental conditions. The plant hormone ABA accumulates after drought stress, and increases plant survival by inducing quick responses such as stomatal closure, and long-term responses such as extended growth inhibition, osmotic regulation, accumulation of cuticular wax, senescence, abscission and dormancy. Here we focus on how the long-term ABA responses contribute to plant survival during severe drought stress. Leaf senescence and abscission of older leaves reduce total plant transpirational water loss and increase the transfer of nutrients to meristems and to some storage tissues. Osmotic regulation favors water consumption in sink tissues, and accumulation of cuticular wax helps to seal the plant surface and limits non-stomatal water loss.

Abstract:Agriculture production faces many abiotic stresses, mainly drought, salinity, low and high temperature. These abiotic stresses inhibit plants' genetic potential, which is the cause of huge reduction in crop productivity, decrease potent yields for important crop plants by more than 50% and imbalance agriculture's sustainability. They lead to changes in the physio-morphological, molecular, and biochemical nature of the plants and change plants' regular metabolism, which makes them a leading cause of losses in crop productivity. These changes in plant systems also help to mitigate abiotic stress conditions. To initiate the signal during stress conditions, sensor molecules of the plant perceive the stress signal from the outside and commence a signaling cascade to send a message and stimulate nuclear transcription factors to provoke specific gene expression. To mitigate the abiotic stress, plants contain several methods of avoidance, adaption, and acclimation. In addition to these, to manage stress conditions, plants possess several tolerance mechanisms which involve ion transporters, osmoprotectants, proteins, and other factors associated with transcriptional control, and signaling cascades are stimulated to offset abiotic stress-associated biochemical and molecular changes. Plant growth and survival depends on the ability to respond to the stress stimulus, produce the signal, and start suitable biochemical and physiological changes. Various important factors, such as the biochemical, physiological, and molecular mechanisms of plants, including the use of microbiomes and nanotechnology to combat abiotic stresses, are highlighted in this article.

Abstract:The sessile lifestyle of plants requires them to cope with stresses <i>in situ</i>. Plants overcome abiotic stresses by altering structure/morphology, and in some extreme conditions, by compressing the life cycle to survive the stresses in the form of seeds. Genetic and molecular studies have uncovered complex regulatory processes that coordinate stress adaptation and tolerance in plants, which are integrated at various levels. Investigating natural variation in stress responses has provided important insights into the evolutionary processes that shape the integrated regulation of adaptation and tolerance. This review primarily focuses on the current understanding of how transcriptional, post-transcriptional, post-translational, and epigenetic processes along with genetic variation orchestrate stress responses in plants. We also discuss the current and future development of computational tools to identify biologically meaningful factors from high dimensional, genome-scale data and construct the signaling networks consisting of these components.

Abstract:Seed morph, abiotic conditions and time of germination can affect plant fitness, but few studies have tested their combined effects on plasticity of plant life history traits. Thus, we tested the hypothesis that seed morph, germination season and watering regime influence phenotypic expression of post-germination life history traits in the diaspore-heteromorphic cold desert winter annual/spring ephemeral Diptychocarpus strictus. The two seed morphs were sown in watered and non-watered plots in late summer, and plants derived from them were watered or not-watered throughout the study. Seed morph did not affect phenology, growth and morphology, survival, dry mass accumulation and allocation or silique and seed production. Seeds in watered plots germinated in autumn (AW) and spring (SW) but only in spring for non-watered plots (SNW). A high percentage of AW, SW and SNW plants survived and reproduced, but flowering date and flowering period of autumn- vs. spring-germinated plants differed. Dry mass also differed with germination season/watering regime (AW > SW > SNW). Number of siliques and seeds increased with plant size (AW > SW > SNW), whereas percent dry mass allocated to reproduction was higher in small plants: SNW > SW > AW. Thus, although seed morph did not affect the expression of life history traits, germination season and watering regime significantly affected phenology, plant size and accumulation and allocation of biomass to reproduction. Flexibility throughout the life cycle of D. strictus is an adaptation to the variation in timing and amount of rainfall in its cold desert habitat.

Abstract:Senescence is an age-dependent process, ultimately leading to plant death, that in annual crop plants overlaps with the reproductive stage of development. Research on the molecular and biochemical mechanisms of leaf senescence has revealed a multi-layered regulatory network operating to control age-dependent processes. Abiotic stress-induced senescence challenges source-sink relationships and results in significant reduction in crop yields. Although processes associated with plant senescence are well studied, the mechanisms regulating stress-induced senescence are not well known. Here, we discuss the effects of abiotic stress on crop productivity, mechanisms associated with stress-induced senescence, and the possible use of these mechanisms for the generation of plant stress tolerance. We emphasize the involvement of source strength and stability of the photosynthetic apparatus in this process, and suggest a possible role of a perennial plant life strategy for the amelioration of stress-induced senescence.

Abstract:The plant senescence syndrome resembles, in many molecular and phenotypic aspects, plant responses to abiotic stresses. Both processes have an enormous negative global agro-economic impact and endanger food security worldwide. Premature plant senescence is the main cause of losses in grain filling and biomass yield due to leaf yellowing and deteriorated photosynthesis, and is also responsible for the losses resulting from the short shelf life of many vegetables and fruits. Under abiotic stress conditions the yield losses are often even greater. The primary challenge in agricultural sciences today is to develop technologies that will increase food production and sustainability of agriculture especially under environmentally limiting conditions. In this chapter, some of the mechanisms involved in abiotic stress-induced plant senescence are discussed. Recent studies have shown that crop yield and nutritional values can be altered as well as plant stress tolerance through manipulating the timing of senescence. It is often difficult to separate the effects of age-dependent senescence from stress-induced senescence since both share many biochemical processes and ultimately result in plant death. The focus of this review is on abiotic stress-induced senescence. Here, a number of the major approaches that have been developed to ameliorate some of the effects of abiotic stress-induced plant senescence are considered and discussed. Some approaches mimic the mechanisms already used by some plants and soil bacteria whereas others are based on development of new improved transgenic plants. While there may not be one simple strategy that can effectively decrease all losses of crop yield that accrue as a consequence of abiotic stress-induced plant senescence, some of the strategies that are discussed already show great promise.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Resilience to abiotic stress is associated with a suite of functional traits related to defense and longevity. Stress tolerant plants are generally slow growing with extended leave lifespans and reduced allocation to reproduction. Resurrection plants are ideal systems to test for trade-offs associated with stress tolerance due to their extreme resiliency. While, growth defense trade-offs are well-characterized, few studies have tested for natural variation associated with tolerating the harshest environments. Here, we surveyed a suite of functional traits related to stress tolerance, leaf economics, and reproductive allocation in natural populations of the South African resurrection plant Myrothamnus flabellifolia . We selected three distinct field sites in South Africa ranging from mesic to xeric. Despite considerable environmental variation across the study area, M. flabellifolia plants were extremely and similarly stress tolerant at all sites. However, we detected notable variation in other life history and morphological traits. Plants in more mesic sites were larger, faster growing, and had more inflorescences. In contrast, plants from the most xeric sites appeared to invest more in persistence and defense, with lower growth rates and less reproductive allocation. Together, this suggests that desiccation tolerance is a binary trait in M. flabellifolia with little natural variation, but that other phenotypes are more labile. The trait syndromes exhibited by plants at the different study sites align with general expectations about growth defense tradeoffs associated with the colonization of extreme environments. We show that plants from the least stressful sites are more reproductive and faster growing, whereas plants from the most stressful sites were slower growing and less reproductive. These findings suggest that M. flabellifolia plants are finely tuned to their environment.

Abstract:Abiotic stress is the adverse effect of any abiotic factor on a plant in a given environment, impacting plants’ growth and development. These stress factors, such as drought, salinity, and extreme temperatures, are often interrelated or in conjunction with each other. Plants have evolved mechanisms to sense these environmental challenges and make adjustments to their growth in order to survive and reproduce. In this review, we summarized recent studies on plant stress sensing and its regulatory mechanism, emphasizing signal transduction and regulation at multiple levels. Then we presented several strategies to improve plant growth under stress based on current progress. Finally, we discussed the implications of research on plant response to abiotic stresses for high-yielding crops and agricultural sustainability. Studying stress signaling and regulation is critical to understand abiotic stress responses in plants to generate stress-resistant crops and improve agricultural sustainability.
