Abstract:OBJECTIVE To evaluate the safety, efficacy, and durability of ureteroscopic laser papillotomy for the treatment of radiographically visible intraductal papillary calculi and/or free collecting system calculi associated with medullary sponge kidney (MSK). METHODS The medical records of 25 MSK patients who underwent ureteroscopic laser papillotomy were reviewed at our institution from 2010 to 2013. The follow-up was made in our outpatient department. Pain was assessed using a standard verbal analog pain scale. Patients' pain score, plain abdominal radiograph, ultrasound examination, and urine analysis were routinely performed for each follow-up. We evaluated the procedure-related complications and mean-estimated glomerular filtration rate. RESULTS Ureteroscopic laser papillotomy was performed a total of 37 times in 25 patients, including 12 bilateral procedures and 13 unilateral procedures. Significantly less pain was reported after 32 procedures. The mean operative time for unilateral procedure was 38.5 +/- 8.2 minutes. The main complications after surgery included urinary infection (2 patients). No serious bleeding was presented in all the patients. The maximum follow-up time was 28.5 months. There was no significant change in the mean-estimated glomerular filtration rate before and after the procedure and at the end of follow-up. Twenty-three patients remained asymptomatic, whereas 2 patients had urinary tract infection (pyelonephritis) during follow-up. CONCLUSION In MSK patients with repeated recurrences of symptomatic stones, ureteroscopic laser papillotomy could be a safe and effective treatment option for radiographically visible intraductal papillary calculi. Abstract:Fibroepithelial polyps in the urinary tract are a rare cause of obstructive uropathy with fewer than 130 cases reported in the literature. In our series, we describe polyps that were missed on preoperative imaging and later found in the operating room during pyeloplasty. It is critical for urologists to be aware of polyps as a potential source of obstruction as they can increase the complexity of a reconstruction and, if missed, may result in a failed repair and persistent obstruction. We hypothesize that performing a retrograde pyelogram prior to ureteric reconstruction will facilitate diagnosis prior to surgical repair.

Abstract:Ureteral stricture formation after ureteroscopic lithotripsy is a late complication that can lead to hydronephrosis and a subsequent risk of renal deterioration. The specific incidence is unknown, and the mechanism of stricture formation has not been completely explained. In this review, we summarize the current evidence regarding the incidence of this condition and discuss its pathogenesis. We then list preventive strategies to reduce the morbidity of ureteral strictures.
Minimally Invasive Surgical Therapies for Ureteral Polyps: A Systematic Review

Abstract:Background: Ureteral polyps are rare benign ureteral tumor. No guideline recommends that open or minimally invasive surgery is best for treating ureteral polyps. This article aims to provide a comprehensive review of the minimally invasive techniques currently available for treating ureteral polyps. Materials and Methods: We performed a comprehensive search of articles published in PubMed, using the keywords "ureteral" and "polyp," or "polyps." Results: A total of 275 studies were obtained from the literature search but 96 articles were excluded. Conclusions: Several minimally invasive approaches were developed with the advancement of medical technology, including endoscopic, laparoscopic, and robotic approaches; however, the best surgical technique was yet to be decided. Due to the advantages and disadvantages of these approaches, the best surgical approach should be tailored to each patient's needs and the surgeon's preferences and experience.

Abstract:Objective To investigate the diagnosis and treatment of primary ureteral polyps.Methods Data of 9 patients with primary urteral polyps were analysed retrospectively.Results Endoscopy and ureterography play an important role in the diagnosis.Partial nephroureterectomy was performed in 1patients; partial ureterectomy and pyeloplasty in 2 patients; partial ureterectomy and re-anastomosis in 1 patient; polyectomy and basal cautery in 3 patients; ureteroscopic polyectomy was performed in 2 patients. Pathological diagnosis was benign fibrous polyp of the ureter.Patients were followed for 3～24 months, no relapse or malignant change were found.Conclusion Uography is important tool for the diagnosis of ureteral polyps.Ureteroscopy is needed for the confirmation of the diagnosis before operation. Lumpectomy is the main treatment for ureteral polyps and the choice of specific operation dependent on the polyp size, number, location and renal function.
Natural History of Conservatively Managed Ureteral Stones: Analysis of 6600 Patients

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: Ureteral colic has a lifetime prevalence of 10%-15% and is one of the most common emergency urologic presentations. Current European Association of Urology recommends conservative management for "small" (<6 mm) ureteral stones if active removal is not indicated. It is important to understand the natural history of ureteral stone disease to help counsel patients with regard to their likelihood of stone passage and anticipated time frame with which they could be safely observed. We aimed to conduct a systematic review to better establish the natural history of stone expulsion.METHODOLOGY: Literature search was performed using Cochrane and PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses) guidelines. Outcome measures were patient and stone demographics, expulsion rates, expulsion times, and side effect of the medication. A cumulative analysis, with subgroup analysis, was performed on stone location and size. The results were depicted as percentages and an intention-to-treat basis was used.RESULTS: The literature search identified 70 studies and a total of 6642 patients, with a median age of 46 and range of 18-74 years. Overall, 64% of patients successfully passed their stones spontaneously. About 49% of upper ureteral stones, 58% of midureteral stones, and 68% of distal ureteral stones passed spontaneously. Almost 75% of stones <5 mm and 62% of stones ≥5 mm passed spontaneously. The average time to stone expulsion was about 17 days (range 6-29 days). Nearly 5% of participants required rehospitalization due to a deterioration of their condition and only about 1% of patients experienced side effects from analgesia provided.CONCLUSION: We believe this current review is the largest study for the evaluation of natural history of ureteral stones. The evidence suggests that ureteral stones will pass without intervention in 64% of patients, however, this varies from nearly 50%-75% depending on the size and location, in the span of 1-4 weeks.

Abstract:Background and objective: Ureteral fibroepithelial polyps (UFPs) are rare benign tumors and ureteroscopy has been used for treatment. We compared the effect of UFP by ureteroscopy combined with holmium laser or thulium laser. Methods: Twenty-five patients with UFPs were treated in our hospital between May 2003 and April 2013. All patients received ultrasound check and intravenous urography (IVU). We performed ureteroscopy operation and found ureteral polyps, so we resected the polyps with holmium laser (12 cases) or thulium laser (13 cases). During the 3-year follow-up, all patients received IVU 2 or 3 months after the double-J stent was removed, and ultrasonic checks every 3-6 months after that. Results: All patients had UFPs resected. Three patients in the holmium laser group had ureteral perforation during operation, and four patients in the holmium laser group developed ureterostenosis. No patients in thulium laser group experienced any severe complications during the procedure. Further, during follow-up, there was no indication of an increase of hydronephrosis in any patients. These findings lead to conclude there were no developments of ureterostenosis nor an experience of any reoccurrence in thulium laser group. Conclusions: Ureteroscopy operations, combined with holmium or thulium laser resection, are effective methods for treating UFP, but thulium laser does better in reducing the incidence of ureterostenosis.

ObjectiveTo identify the factors influencing postoperative ureteral stenosis following holmium laser lithotripsy.MethodsA retrospective study was conducted of 106 patients who underwent ureteroscopic holmium laser lithotripsy. The effects of variables including stone location, stone size, the duration of surgery, water intake, disease duration, and stone-associated polyps were investigated.ResultsLogistic regression analysis revealed significant associations of ureteral stenosis with stone location, stone size, duration of surgery, water intake, disease duration, and stone-associated polyps. Patients with proximal stones, with large stones, who underwent long surgical procedures, who drank a large amount of water, who had long-term disease, and who had stone-related polyps were more likely to develop postoperative ureteral stenosis.ConclusionSignificant perioperative complications of holmium laser lithotripsy are associated with prolonged disease, large ureteral stones, long incarceration periods, and the presence of polyps. Surgeons should consider these risk factors during the preoperative evaluation of patients and surgical planning to minimize the risk of postoperative ureteral stenosis.

Abstract:Objective To summarize the diagnosis and treatment strategy of primary ureteral fibroepithelial polyp.Methods The Clinico-pathological data of 44 primary ureteral fibroepithelial polyp cases (27 males and 17 females) treated from Jan.1998 to Mar.2013 were analyzed retrospectively.The mean age was 37 (12-67) years.Patients were admitted with flank-abdominal pain (63.6％),painless gross hematuria (18.2％) and hydronephrosis (9.1％) with a mean history of 4 (1 week-20 years) yrs.CT scan of the 38 cases revealed hydronephrosis (68.4％) and ureter tumor (63.2％).Of the 16 cases with retrograde urography,13 demonstrated filling-defects in ureter (81.3％),among whom,10 revealed long strip-shaped filling-defects suspect of ureter polyp (62.5％).Ureteroscopy was performed in 25 cases and discovered ureter polyp in 19 patients.Partial ureterectomy was performed on 28 patients,endoscopic procedure was performed on 11 cases and the left 5 patients were treated with nephroureterectomy.Results 40 patients were followed-up for 6 mon to 15 years.Of the 35 patients with the kidney reserved,31 were fully recovered with no symptoms and with no hydronephrosis or polyp recurring,3 cases with hydronephrosis were relieved,1 patient lost the affected kidney after 3 years because of severe hydronephrosis.Conclusions Primary ureteral fibroepithelial polyp should be suspected in younger patients with long term intermittent flank or abdominal pain and/or gross hematuria.CT scan and retrograde urography are the main diagnostic imaging studies.Ureteroscopy plays a pivotal role in the diagnosis and decision of treatment strategy,especially to avoid undertaking nephroureterectomy in suspicious of ureteral carcinoma.Resection of the polyp under ureteroscopy is safe and effective.

Abstract:Objective:The aim of this study is to assess the efficacy and safety of laparoscopic surgery in the treatment of pediatric ureteral fibroepithelial polyps patients. Our research aims to evaluate the clinical outcomes of the surgery, including postoperative symptom relief, improvement in kidney function, and the risk of postoperative complications. Methods: The clinical records of 34 patients who underwent ureteral polyp surgery at the Department of Urology in Anhui Children's Hospital between May 2014 and February 2023 were retrospectively analyzed.Among the 34 pediatric patients, there were 31 males and 3 females, with 2 on the right side and 32 on the left side. All children presented with varying degrees of hydronephrosis, and preoperative clinical symptoms included ipsilateral flank or abdominal pain, hematuria, and other discomforts. All pediatric patients underwent laparoscopic excision of the polyp segment of the ureter, followed by renal pelvis ureteroplasty or ureter-to-ureter anastomosis.Results: All patients underwent the surgery successfully without conversion to open surgery. The surgical duration ranged from 72 to 313 minutes, with an average of 179.5 minutes. The average intraoperative blood loss was 14ml. All patients experienced a favorable postoperative recovery, with hospitalization periods ranging from 3 to 16 days and an average stay of 8.6days. A double-J stent was inserted in all patients for a duration of 1-2 months after surgery, and upon removal, follow-up color Doppler ultrasound revealed reduced hydronephrosis within 1-3 months.Follow-up examinations were conducted at intervals ranging from 3 to108 months post-surgery, with an average follow-up time of 42.2 months, during which no recurrence of ureteral polyps or symptoms such as pain and hematuria were observed.Conclusion: The findings of this study demonstrate that laparoscopic excision of the polyp segment of the ureter, renal pelvis ureteroplasty, or ureter-to-ureter anastomosis represent safe and effective treatment modalities for pediatric fibroepithelial polyps in the ureters.

Abstract:The diagnosis and treatment of large fibroepithelial polyps in the proximal ureter have been the clinical challenges. This study retrospectively summarized the clinical diagnosis and treatment of fibroepithelial polyps >5 cm in length in the proximal ureter of 6 patients who received treatment in the Affiliated Renji Hospital of Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine between December 2010 and February 2017. The length of fibroepithelial polyps ranged from 5.8 to 8.2 cm. There were 4 males and 2 females with the mean age of 32.6 ± 9.8 years. Unilateral polyps were found in all patients (right: n = 4; left: n = 2). Hydronephrosis of different extents was noted in these patients, 4 complained of back pain and 2 were diagnosed with hydronephrosis by ultrasonography. 1 patient had macroscopic hematuria. All these patients received antegrade plus retrograde endoscopic laser polypectomy after admission. Symptoms were significantly improved after surgery, and ultrasonography showed hydronephrosis was attenuated to different extents 2 weeks later. Three months later, computed tomography urography revealed favorable recovery in 5 patients and deterioration of hydronephrosis due to ureteropelvic stenosis in 1 patient.

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate ureteroscopy for the treatment of ureteral stones. Methods: 456 patients with ureteral stones undergoing ureteroscopy were retrospectively analyzed. Results: The successful rate for the insertion of the ureteroscope was 99.6% (454/456) and the placement of the ureteroscope failed in 2 cases. The successful rate of lithotripsy under the ureteroscope was 92.7% (421/454) and lithotripsy failed in 8 cases. There were 2 cases of ureteral perforation. Conclusion: The therapeutic effects of ureteroscopy in the treatment of ureteral stones are reliable, the patients suffer less pain and the recovery after operation is rapid. Ureteroscopy is an idea therapy for ureteral stones.
Ureteral stricture after ureteroscopy for stones: A prospective study for the incidence and risk factors

Abstract:Context: A ureteral stricture is a serious complication of ureteroscopy (URS) that was reported in the literature in highly variable rates from 0.2% to 24%. Aims: Our aims are to estimate the incidence and to detect the risk factors of ureteral stricture after URS. Settings and design: This is a prospective, case-series study. Materials and methods: During the period from May 2015 to August 2016, 251 adult patients underwent 263 URS for the treatment of 304 ureteral stones. Postoperative regular follow-up was done for 12 months by ultrasound. Computed tomography urography and diuretic renogram were performed for the cases developed hydronephrosis to confirm and detect the level of the stricture. Statistical analysis: IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 19.0, Armonk, NY: IBM Corp. used for data analysis. Chi-square and Fisher's exact tests were used to compare between qualitative variables. Mann-Whitney test was used to compare between two quantitative variables in case of nonparametric data. Multiple logistic regression analysis was done to measure the risk factors. P value was considered statistically significant when <0.05. Results: The mean age was 43.5 years (standard deviation [SD]: ±13.6), and the mean body mass index was 28.39 (±3.96). The mean total stone burden was 12.8 mm (SD: ±5.9). Bilateral URS was performed in 12 cases. The mean operative time was 54.8 min (SD: ±22.68). Initial and final stone-free rates were 83.3% and 100%, respectively. The overall complications rate was 28.1%. Stricture occurred in four cases (1.5%). Conclusions: In our experience, the incidence of post-URS ureteral stricture is low. The impacted stone is the most common cause of URS complications and hence stricture formation.
Clinicopathologic characteristics, therapy and outcomes of patients with primary ureteral small cell carcinoma: a case series and systematic review of the literature.

Abstract:Purpose: The aim of this case series was to review the standard diagnosis and treatment procedures of primary small cell carcinoma (SCC) in our institution and discuss the clinico-pathologic characteristics, treatments and outcomes of patients with primary ureteral SCC. Patients and methods: Patients diagnosed with ureteral SCC in Peking University First Hospital, Beijing, China, from January 2007 to December 2016 were included. In addition, we performed a systematic literature review, in October 2016, on case reports and case series of ureteral SCC. The clinicopathologic characteristics, treatments and outcomes of this rare disease were analyzed. Results: A total of 32 patients were included in our analysis (4 cases from our institution and 28 cases from the literature). Most patients (71.0%) were male with an average age of 66.6 years (range 48-80 years). The most common symptoms were hematuria (n=14, 48.3%) and flank pain (n=14, 48.3%). All patients underwent surgery, with 12 (37.5%) patients undergoing multimodality therapy. Regional or distant recurrences developed in 11 patients, among which only 1 patient had bladder recurrence. The overall median survival of the patients was 17 months, with 1- and 3-year survival rates of 51.9% and 30.3%, respectively. In a univariate analysis, female (P=0.009), pure SCC (P=0.03) and advanced T stage (P=0.04) were associated with worse overall survival. Conclusion: Ureteral SCCs are extremely rare neoplasms with aggressive natural history and poor prognosis. T stage, tumor components and gender may be important factors influencing prognosis. A multimodality treatment is recommended for management. However, further studies are needed to improve the treatment strategy.

Abstract:Abstract Background Horseshoe kidney is one of the most common congenital renal fusion anomalies and is characterized by abnormalities in the position, rotation, vascular supply, and ureteral anatomy of the kidney. When performing surgery for colorectal cancer in patients with horseshoe kidneys, anatomical identification is important to avoid organ injuries. Several reports on surgery for colorectal cancer with horseshoe kidneys have described the usefulness of three-dimensional (3D) computed tomography (CT) angiography for detecting abnormalities in vascular supply. However, few reports have focused on the prevention of ureteral injury in surgery for colorectal cancer with horseshoe kidney, despite abnormalities in the ureteral anatomy. Here, we report a case in which laparoscopic sigmoid colon resection for sigmoid colon cancer with a horseshoe kidney was safely performed using fluorescent ureteral catheters. Case presentation A 60-year-old Japanese man presented to our hospital testing positive for fecal occult blood. Colonoscopy revealed sigmoid colon cancer, and CT confirmed a horseshoe kidney. The 3D-CT angiography showed aberrant renal arteries from the aorta and right common iliac artery, and the left ureter passed across the front of the renal isthmus. A fluorescent ureteral catheter was placed in the left ureter before the surgery to prevent ureteral injury. Laparoscopic sigmoid colon resection with D3 lymph node dissection was performed. The fluorescent ureteral catheter enabled the identification of the left ureter that passed across the front of the renal isthmus and the safe mobilization of the descending and sigmoid colon from the retroperitoneum. The operative time was 214 min, with intraoperative bleeding of 25 mL. The patient’s postoperative course was good: no complications arose and she was discharged on the seventh postoperative day. Conclusion In patients with horseshoe kidney, the use of fluorescent ureteral catheters and 3D-CT angiography enables safer laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancer. We recommend the placement of fluorescent ureteral catheters in such surgeries to prevent ureteral injury.
Single-use ureteroscopes in ectopic pelvic kidney stones

Abstract:We analyzed the results of single-use flexible ureteroscopy (su-fURS) with the holmium laser in treating renal stones associated with ectopic pelvic kidney (EPK). The study retrospectively analyzed data of 11 patients diagnosed with EPK and stone disease who underwent su-fURS between May 2017 and November 2019. The analyzed surgical data included the mean operation time, stone-free and complication rates, as well as hospitalization period. Disposable digital flexible ureteroscopes were exclusively used. The mean age was 55, with a 1.2:1 male to female ratio. The mean stone burden was 30±9 mm (ranging from 17 to 49 mm). The mean calculi digitized surface area (DSA) was 299±56 mm2 (ranging from 170 to 597 mm2). A ureteral access sheath was used in all 11 patients, and holmium laser lithotripsy was performed (dusting mode parameters: low energy - 0.5J, high frequency - 50 Hz, long pulse; pop-corn mode: high energy >1 J, medium frequency- 10-50 Hz, long pulse; fragmenting mode: high energy >1 J, low frequency <10 Hz, short pulse). The average operative time was 78±19 minutes (ranging from 68 to 144 minutes). The stone-free status (residual fragments <3 mm) after one session was 60.1%, 84.1% after the second session, and 94.4% after the third session. The hospitalization period was 29 hours (ranging from 17 to 39 hours). The overall complications rate (according to the Clavien-Dindo system) was 19.7%. Therefore, su-fURS represents an effective therapeutic approach characterized by a remarkably high stone-free rate and few complications in EPK-associated calculi.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Urothelial encrusted pyelo-ureteritis disease is an infrequent condition and there is no unified surgical treatment and reference standard to consult. We have used a minimally invasive endoscopic method to treat three such cases, which yielded excellent results.CASE SUMMARY The first case was a 45-year-old man who had unilateral ureteropelvic junction（UPJ） atresia and contralateral stenosis and was treated by double endoscopic surgery using an anterograde percutaneous nephroscope coupled with a rigid retrograde ureteroscope. The second case was a 12-year-old boy who received a percutaneous nephroscopy on one side and a percutaneous nephroscopy with a rigid ureteroscope on the other side due to the presence of bilateral UPJ stenosis. The third case was a 32-year-old woman with bilateral lower ureteral stricture treated using a rigid retrograde ureteroscope. Endoscopic surgeries were successfully performed on all the three patients. Varying degrees of encrustation and erosion of the urothelium were observed during the operation. The calcified layer composition analysis showed magnesium ammonium phosphate or carbonate apatite. Two patients achieved a good prognosis.CONCLUSION Minimally invasive endoscopic treatment for urothelial encrusted pyelo-ureteritis disease can yield better results.
The Surgical Outcomes of Reconstruction for the Treatment of Ureteral Stricture after Holmium Laser Lithotripsy: the Comprehensive Experiences

Abstract:Objective: To analyze the characteristics of ureteral stricture after ureteroscopic holmium laser litho-tripsy and summarize our experience with the reconstructive strategies.Methods: This study retrospectively reviewed 42 patients with ureteral stricture after ureteroscopic holmium laser lithotripsy between December 2009 and December 2019. Patient demographics, labora-tory data, imaging studies, perioperative variables, complications, and follow-up data were recorded. Surgical success was defined as relief of symptoms, improved/stabilized hydronephrosis, and stable renal function. Results: The upper, middle, and lower thirds of the ureter were affected in 27, 6, and 7 cases, respectively. Multiple ureteral strictures were found in 2 patients. The median length of the stricture was 3.5 cm (range 1-30 cm). In the upper ureteral strictures, lingual mucosal ureteroplasty (8/27, 29.6%) is the most commonly used treatment method for stricture longer than 3 cm but shorter than 6 cm, followed by appendiceal onlay ureteroplasty (5/27, 18.5%). Four lower ureteral strictures ranging from 3 to 8 cm were repaired with Boari flap. Reconstructive strategies of the middle ureteral strictures included Boari flap, appendiceal onlay ureteroplasty and ureteroureterostomy. Patients with the length of the stricture longer than 8 cm or multiple strictures underwent ileal ureter replacement. The median follow-up was 27.3 +/- 17.2 months. The overall success rate was 97.6%.Conclusion: Upper ureter is more vulnerable in ureteroscopic holmium laser lithotripsy. Sufficient follow-up and appropriate examination are necessary for diagnosis. Abstract:Objective:To explore and analyse the tumour outcome of primary ureteral cancer treated by kidneysparing surgery.Method:The cases of primary ureteral cancer from January 2007 to December 2015 in Peking University Shougang Hospital were reviewed and analyzed.Of 12 cases of primary ureteral cancer treated by kidneysparing surgery,11 cases were found unifocal,one was found bilateral,12 were found distal ureter and one was found middle ureter.The distal ureterectomy plus bladder cuff excision and ureteral neocystostomy were performed in five cases.Ureteroscopic ablation with holmium laser conducted in five cases.One case was performed with segmental ureterectomy and ureteroureteral anastomsis.One patient with bilateral ureteral tumor synchronically was carried out by removing bilateral distal ureter and cutaneous ureterostomy.All the cases were indwelt with ureteral stent tube,and the tube was removed four weeks postoperatively.Of them,nine cases were performed with cystic irrigation.Result:All of them were urothelial carcinoma.Except one withdraw,11 cases were followed up from 3 to 108 months with the mean of (48.08±32.75) months.The total recurrence rate was 54.55％ (6/11),while the average cancer-free survival was (24.2±19.46) months.The incidence of bladder cancer within two years postoperatively was 9.0％.The two-year overall survival was 81.81％ (9/11) and five-year overall survival was 54.54％ (6/11).Conclusion:The kidney-sparing surgery treating primary ureteral cancer is safe,feasible and effective.However,the strict surveillance and follow-up should be conducted in the patients after operation,including ureteroscopic exam.
Predictors of Ureteral Strictures after Retrograde Ureteroscopic Treatment of Impacted Ureteral Stones: A Systematic Literature Review

Abstract:Background: The stricture-formation rate following ureteroscopy ranges from 0.5 to 5% and might amount to 24% in patients with impacted ureteral stones. The pathogenesis of ureteral stricture formation is not yet fully understood. It is likely that the patient and stone characteristics, as well as intervention factors, play a role in this process. In this systematic review, we aimed to determine the potential factors responsible for ureteral stricture formation in patients having impacted ureteral stones. Methods: Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) criteria, we conducted systematic online research through PubMed and Web of Science without a time restriction, applying the keywords “ureteral stone”, “ureteral calculus”, “impacted stone”, “ureteral stenosis”, “ureteroscopic lithotripsy”, “impacted calculus”, and “ureteral strictures” singly or in combination. Results: After eliminating non-eligible studies, we identified five articles on ureteral stricture formation following treatment of impacted ureteral stones. Ureteral perforation and/or mucosal damage appeared as key predictors of ureteral stricture following retrograde ureteroscopy (URS) for impacted ureteral stones. Besides ureteral perforation stone size, embedded stone fragments into the ureter during lithotripsy, failed URS, degree of hydronephrosis, nephrostomy tube or double-J stent (DJS)/ureter catheter insertion were also suggested factors leading to ureteral strictures. Conclusion: Ureteral perforation during surgery might be considered the main risk factor for ureteral stricture formation following retrograde ureteroscopic stone removal for impacted ureteral stones.
