Abstract:Meng Wentong's study of Chinese ancient history has pushed forward the Movement consciously or unconsciously.His Gu Shi Zheng Wei proposes multi-analysis of Chinese ancient history,coincident with the view of Multidimensional Ancient History supported by the New Historiography ,has subverted the one unitary lineage of the Remote Antiquity,drawing great attention from academia of that time.However,as to the academic venation of Meng Wentong's study,it is not difficult to find that Gu Shi Zheng Wei is to assist Classical Studies.Through casting back the root of history of Rulers of Remote Antiquity,Meng Wentong puts forward multi-analysis of Chinese ancient history based on perspectives of geography,nation and culture,trying to reconstruct Chinese ancient history,to clarify relations between Historical Studies and Classical Studies,to testify the classics with the help of history,and eventually to illuminate the important role Classical Studies has played in Chinese culture.

Abstract:The study of the aborigines in Taiwan began from Qing Dynasty ,and developed into the phase of indagation during the time that Taiwan was occupied by Japan. Then the study of the aborigines leaded by scholars in Taiwan got great development on the indagation of ethnography and the research of social and cultural anthropology. A kind of inaccurate tendency that several scholars unilaterally emphasize the relation between the aborigines in Taiwan and Austronesian family has been appearing in recent years. Basing on the new research of ethnography indagation and by integrated multi-subject research , rebuilding the important item such as the origin, the history, the relationship and the identifying of the nation on the aborigines in Taiwan, is the unshirkable responsibility to the continent scholars in the new century.

Abstract:This article reanalyzes petroglyphs from the Red Bird River Shelter (15CY52), a small sandstone shelter in Kentucky. In 2009–2013, it was claimed that some of the carvings at the site represented the earliest known examples of Cherokee Syllabary writing, dating to the first two decades of the nineteenth century. It was also suggested that Sequoyah, the Cherokee artist and intellectual who invented the Cherokee Syllabary in the early nineteenth century, had made these petroglyph versions during a visit to see his white paternal family living in Kentucky. Our reanalysis categorically contests this interpretation. We do not see Cherokee Syllabary writing at Red Bird River Shelter. We do not believe that historical evidence supports the notion that Sequoyah had white relatives in Kentucky whom he visited there at the time required for him to have authored those petroglyphs. We also believe that this account misrepresents Sequoyah's Cherokee identity by tying him to white relatives for whom there is no historical warrant. We argue that the Red Bird River Shelter is a significant precontact petroglyph site with several panels of line-and-groove petroglyphs overlain by numerous examples of modern graffiti, but there is no Sequoyan Syllabary inscription there.

Abstract:Abstract: This article examines a selection of work by contemporary tattoo artist John Henry Gloyne (Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians) to understand how tattooing functions as an Indigenous creative practice that can imagine alternative realities and reestablish connections to Native pasts and presents. Gloyne's work redefines contemporary Native tattooing by highlighting its continuing significance and artistic innovations in the present. In doing so, Gloyne's work challenges the settler notion that Native cultural practices are static and stuck in the past. The authors' analysis includes Gloyne's reinvention of Cherokee symbols (water spider and Booger mask tattoos), early/mid-twentieth-century Americana tattoo flash, and his tattoo-inspired painting Sacred Realms: Tobacco Offerings to the Picture Machine . Honma and Francoso employ an analytic of "reimagining" to investigate how Gloyne's work embraces an ethos of experimentation and innovation that moves beyond settler frameworks of comprehension. In order to understand how he challenges various modes of representation and ways of looking that normalize the settler project, they historicize the symbols and motifs found in Gloyne's work. They incorporate interdisciplinary methods of visual analysis, historical recontextualization, and interview data to center Gloyne's unique aesthetic approach, which foregrounds renewed ways of envisioning and embodying Indigenous worlds.

Abstract:Abstract: Over the last decade, Cree visual and performance artist Kent Monkman has undertaken an innovative and searching exploration of Romantic painting. Yet, the centrality of Romanticism in his oeuvre has hitherto been misunderstood. Drawing on the resources of Romantic historiography, he modulates historical distance—sympathetic proximity and cerebral distanciation—not only to "redistance" history to meet contemporary needs, but to complicate the movements of identification and alienation. Monkman's work may be ironic, but his is a strangely compassionate irony in which the relationship between European and non-Indigenous peoples is framed with a delicate hope for sincere reconciliation.
Chief John Ross Protests the Treaty of New Echota

Abstract:The Cherokee continued to remain on their land after the Supreme Court case of 1831 and another suit in 1832. Cherokee leaders refused to negotiate over removal, despite the efforts of Georgia authorities to force them to do so. Finally, in 1835, a small group of men claiming to represent the Cherokee signed the removal treaty. Other Cherokee rejected the treaty on the grounds that these men were unauthorized and did not reflect the wishes of the community.

Reading the History of a Tibetan Mahakala Painting: The Nyingma Chod Mandala of Legs Ldan Nagpo Aghora in the Royal Ontario Museum

Abstract:This thesis presents a detailed study of a large Tibetan painting in the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) that was collected in 1921 by an Irish fur trader named George Crofts. The painting represents a mandala, a Buddhist meditational diagram, centered on a fierce protector, or dharmapala, known as Mahakala or “Great Black Time” in Sanskrit. The more specific Tibetan form depicted, called Legs Idan Nagpo Aghora, or the “Excellent Black One who is Not Terrible,” is ironically named since the deity is himself very wrathful, as indicated by his bared fangs, bulging red eyes, and flaming hair. His surrounding mandala includes over 100 subsidiary figures, many of whom are indeed as terrifying in appearance as the central figure. There are three primary parts to this study. First, I discuss how the painting came to be in the museum, including the roles played by George Croft s, the collector and Charles Trick Currelly, the museum’s director, and the historical, political, and economic factors that brought about the ROM Himalayan collection. Through this historical focus, it can be seen that the painting is in fact part of a fascinating museological story, revealing details of the formation of the museum’s Asian collections during the tumultuous early Republican era in China. The second section explores the stylistic features of the painting to ascertain the date and provenance of its production. By examining both the earliest and latest features

Abstract:Public structures known as townhouses were hubs of public life within Cherokee communities in the southern Appalachians before and after European contact. Townhouses themselves were architectural manifestations of Cherokee towns. The architectural symbolism of townhouses was related to the symbolism of late precontact Mississippian platform mounds, mythical connections between earthen mounds and Cherokee townhouses, and color symbolism that was widespread in the Southeast during the eighteenth century. These points are evident from documentary sources, oral tradition, and the sequence of protohistoric Cherokee townhouses at the Coweeta Creek site in southwestern North Carolina.

Abstract:William Holland Thomas, whose father dies before he is born, is adopted by a Cherokee chief, Yonaguska. Upon his deathbed, the chief names Thomas-a white man-as the new chief of the eastern band of Cherokee. He becomes a fierce advocate for the Cherokee, insuring that they own the land on which they live. Late in life he marries Sarah Love, the much younger daughter of his best friend. The Cherokee declare war on the United States-which marched so many of their tribe away form their ancestral lands along the Trail of Tears. Thomas raises a regiment of Cherokees and mountaineers and spends himself in the war, eventually failing in health and dangerously insane.
Some Analysis and Discussion on Hu Sansheng's Word Explanation to the History as a Mirror

Abstract:Hu Sansheng’s annotation to the History As A Mirror is extensive in scope and penetrating in thought, and word explanation is one of its important content. The parts after “Wei’s Chronicles” in the book has no annotation references in original texts, so the annotations are all done by Hu himself. Overall, Hu’s word explanations are accurate and full with research significance in terms of the history of ancient annotation and Chinese language development. But there are still some items not accurate, and can be analyzed and discussed. This paper selected 20 items of Hu‘s word explanation in the parts of the chronicles from Wei to Chen in this book, discusses and analyzes their errors and provides some supplements.

Abstract:Abstract: This article explores the provenance of two portraits of the eighteenth-century Swiss painter Angelica Kauffman. One the original self-portrait and the other evidently a contemporary copy, the paintings have intersecting histories that have led to confusion and some enduring mysteries. The author sifts through documentary sources and consults with experts at the Angelika Kauffmann Research Project to firmly establish which is the original self-portrait and—even more tantalizingly—attempt to reconstruct the paintings' distinct but intertwining histories, speculate on the identity of the copyist, and explain how various misunderstandings (some of which linger into the present day) might have occurred.

Abstract:his article is devoted to analysis the theme of the “scholar’s study” in Netherland XVII century painting. The reason for the rise of this theme is closely related to the great development of science and navigation in the XVII century in Netherland. Under the economic development, the tradition of collecting prevails among scholars. People admire knowledge and work on scientific inquiry. The author analyzes Gerrit Dou’s self-portrait The Artist’s studio and the symbolic meanings of objects in the painting. The author states that his self-portrait portrays himself as a scholar, reflecting the social ethos of worshiping knowledge. The specificity of his work, the themes of the scholar’s study, the influence of science, religion, philosophy on the painting of Gerrit Dou, the symbolic meanings of objects surrounding the scientist are considered. Jan van der Hayden’s paintings Still Life with a Globe, Books, Sculpture and Other Objects reflect the wide-ranging style of the collection at that time, reflecting both the worship of religion and the abundance of Netherland foreign products under the background of the great geographical discovery in the XVII century. During this period, establishment of Netherland universities and advent of the maritime age encouraged a thriving cartography producing. A large number of globes and scientific tools appeared in the paintings. They not only have religious meaning, but also show the progress of the new era. Audience can get a glimpse of the characteristics of a typical Netherland scholar’s collection from his paintings. The purpose of this article is to analyze the scientific progress, social development of the Netherlands. This allows you to take a fresh look at the assessment of creativity on the theme of the scholar’s study. To fulfill that purpose, need to complete following tasks: to characterize the specifics of paintings in the themes of the scholar’s study, to reveal the symbolism in the paintings The Artist’s studio by Gerrit Dou, Still Life with a Globe, Books, Sculpture and Other Objects and A Corner of a Room with Curiosities by Jan van der Hayden, to show the close connection between the development of science in the 17th century and the topic of the scientist’s office. The author concludes that the theme of the “scholar’s study” in Netherland XVII century paintings reflect the collection characteristics and aesthetics in the XVII century.

Abstract:Abstract Despite an extensive literature on Castle Howard and its innovative landscape, few details have been known about the important naturalistic garden at Wray Wood. This article identifies four drawings attributed to Nicholas Hawksmoor as designs for the wood's rockwork and watercourses. Although these features have long since disappeared, building records, letters and visitor accounts confirm their existence and show that Hawksmoor was also involved in the display of the sculpture and fountains, with subjects drawn from classical myths and legends. His later designs for the two temples on the east wall of the wood further illustrate his personal vision of the woodland garden and of the sources that inspired its mythological theme. This article draws together all the evidence relating to the wood and considers it in the context of innovative European garden design and its transfer to England in the first years of the eighteenth century. The wood has usually been attributed in more or less equal measure to Hawksmoor, Vanbrugh and their patron Lord Carlisle, but the evidence indicates that it was Hawksmoor who took the lead in carrying out Carlisle's wishes.
Art as Maps: Influence of Cartography on Two Chinese Landscape Paintings of the Song Dynasty (960-1279 CE)

Abstract:In this article I examine the influence of cartography on two Chinese Song dynasty (960-1279 CE) landscape paintings: the Changjiang wan li tu (panoramic view of the Changjiang) and the Shu chuan shenggai (beautiful scenery along the Changjiang in Sichuan). Western readers may be more familiar with the Changjiang as the Yangtze River. In addition to discussion of their artists, dates, and nature, the cartographic elements depicted in these two paintings have also been examined in detail. Although there are still some uncertainties about the artists and dates of the two paintings, the evidence provided by the place names inscribed on these two scrolls indicates that the Changjiang wan li tu could not have been created before 1196 and that the Shu chuan shenggai could not have been painted earlier than 1208. The theme, content, and artistic style of these two Chinese landscape paintings and the history of the collections in which they were treasured through the centuries suggest that they would be more appropriately regarded as artistic masterpieces than as maps. However, both paintings include significant cartographic elements, reflecting the influence of traditional Chinese cartography. That influence is evident in the inscription of place names according to their relative locations, the use of geographical texts as sources, the indication of distance between the sites, and the identification of the locations and changes of historical place names.

Abstract:In 1916, Dr. Colton began the archaeological survey of the Museum of Northern Arizona by recording sites in the vicinity of Flagstaff. In order to locate additional sites and to visit the Hopi Mesas, he and his wife, during the summer of 1916, journeved to Oraibi by means of wagon and mule team. In days before modern roads were available this was indeed a perilous trip, but one successfully completed within a period of two weeks.

Abstract:In the latter half of the first century A.D. a Chinese scholar picked up his brush and began to compile historical records. A political indiscretion prematurely terminated his labors, but he gave twenty years of his life to the task. The result of his work is one of a group of compilations that constitute part of the world's most remarkable historical literature. The scholar was Pan Ku (32–92 A.D.), and the work that consumed much of his life is known as the Han shu, i.e., Han documents, or Documents of the [former] Han dynasty.

Abstract:In Pieter Wonder's oil painting, Patrons and Lovers of Art (1830), considered to be an idealised prefiguration of London's National Gallery, we can identify sixteen British gentlemen collectors and connoisseurs, and forty-four Old Master and British paintings which are today considered collection highlights of major art museums across Europe and North America. This essay focuses on the lives of two of Wonder's sitters in order to better understand how transatlantic slavery is deeply ingrained in Britain's cultural past. The painting provides a useful springboard for considering the cultural legacies of slave-ownership, highlighting the myriad connections between the brutal system of colonial slavery and the world of aesthetics and taste, and encouraging reflection about a history that has for so long remained silent. In uncovering the sources of wealth which helped to facilitate the development and lavish display of such grand collections, it becomes possible to reconsider our understanding of the history of art collecting in the early decades of the nineteenth century. The essay argues that today art museums across Europe and North America are faced with an urgent moral imperative to acknowledge and better understand the extent of their debt to transatlantic slavery.
