Abstract:Neurons in the temporal visual cortical areas of primates have large receptive fields, which can show considerable selectivity for what the stimulus is irrespective of exactly where it is in the visual field. This is called translation invariance. However, such results have been found when there is only one stimulus in the visual field. The question arises of how the visual system operates in a cluttered environment. To investigate this we measured the responses of neurons with face-selective responses in the cortex in the anterior part of the superior temporal sulcus of rhesus macaques performing a visual fixation task. We found that the response of neurons to an effective face centred 8.5° from the fovea was decreased to 71% if an ineffective face stimulus for that cell was present at the fovea. In a similar way, introduction of a parafoveal ineffective face stimulus decreased the responses of these neurons to an effective face stimulus at the fovea to 75%. In addition to these interactions, it was found that an effective stimulus object at the fovea produced a larger response than when it was parafoveal, and that this weighting towards an object at the fovea was also seen when more than one object was present in the visual field. The implication of this weighting of the responses of neurons towards objects at the fovea, even in an environment with more than one object present, is that the output of the visual system provides information to subsequent systems particularly about objects at the fovea, so that learning about these objects (and less about other objects elsewhere in the visual field) is facilitated.
Responses of neurons in macaque area V4 during memory-guided visual search

Abstract:In a typical scene with many different objects, attentional mechanisms are needed to select relevant objects for visual processing and control over behavior. To test the role of area V4 in the selection of objects based on non-spatial features, we recorded from V4 neurons in the monkey, using a visual search paradigm. A cue stimulus was presented at the center of gaze, followed by a blank delay period. After the delay, a two-stimulus array was presented extrafoveally, and the monkey was rewarded for detecting the target stimulus matching the cue. The array was composed of one 'good' stimulus (effective in driving the cell when presented alone) and one 'poor' stimulus (ineffective in driving the cell when presented alone). When the choice array was presented in the receptive field (RF) of the neuron, many cells showed suppressive interactions between the stimuli as well as strong attention effects. Within 150--200 ms of array onset, responses to the array were determined by the target stimulus. If the target was the good stimulus, the response to the array became equal to the response to the good stimulus presented alone. If the target was the poor stimulus, the response approached the response to that stimulus presented alone. Thus the influence of the nontarget stimulus was filtered out. These effects were reduced or eliminated when the poor stimulus was located outside the RF and, therefore, no longer competing for the cell's response. Overall, the results support a 'biased competition' model of attention, according to which objects in the visual field compete for representation in the cortex, and this competition is biased in favor of the behaviorally relevant object.

After the delay, an array of two to five choice stimuli was presented extrafoveally, and the monkey was rewarded for detecting a target stimulus matching the cue. The behavioral response was a saccadic eye movement to the target in one version of the task and a lever release in another. The array was composed of one "good" stimulus (effective in driving the cell when presented alone) and one or more "poor" stimuli (ineffective in driving the cell when presented alone). Most cells showed higher delay activity after a good stimulus used as the cue than after a poor stimulus. The baseline activity of cells was also higher preceding a good cue, if the animal expected it to occur. This activity may depend on a top-down bias in favor of cells coding the relevant stimulus. When the choice array was presented, most cells showed suppressive interactions between the stimuli as well as strong attention effects. When the choice array was presented in the contralateral visual field, most cells initially responded the same, regardless of which stimulus was the target. However, within 150-200 ms of array onset, responses were determined by the target stimulus. If the target was the good stimulus, the response to the array became equal to the response to the good stimulus presented alone. If the target was a poor stimulus, the response approached the response to that stimulus presented alone. Thus the influence of the nontarget stimulus was eliminated. These effects occurred well in advance of the behavioral response. When the array was positioned with stimuli on opposite sides of the vertical meridian, the contralateral stimulus appeared to dominate the response, and this dominant effect could not be overcome by attention. Overall, the results support a "biased competition" model of attention, according to which 1) objects in the visual field compete for representation in the cortex, and 2) this competition is biased in favor of the behaviorally relevant object by virtue of "top-down" feedback from structures involved in working memory.

Abstract:Abstract In natural vision, primates actively move their eyes several times per second via saccades. It remains unclear whether, during this active looking, visual neurons exhibit classical retinotopic properties, anticipate gaze shifts or mirror the stable quality of perception, especially in complex natural scenes. Here, we let 13 monkeys freely view thousands of natural images across 4.6 million fixations, recorded 883 h of neuronal responses in six areas spanning primary visual to anterior inferior temporal cortex and analyzed spatial, temporal and featural selectivity in these responses. Face neurons tracked their receptive field contents, indicated by category-selective responses. Self-consistency analysis showed that general feature-selective responses also followed eye movements and remained gaze-dependent over seconds of viewing the same image. Computational models of feature-selective responses located retinotopic receptive fields during free viewing. We found limited evidence for feature-selective predictive remapping and no viewing-history integration. Thus, ventral visual neurons represent the world in a predominantly eye-centered reference frame during natural vision.

Condition-dependent and condition-independent target selection in the macaque posterior parietal cortex

Abstract:During a visual search, information about the visual attributes of an object and associated behavioral requirements is essential for discriminating a target object from others in the visual field. On the other hand, information about the object's position appears to be more important when orienting the eyes toward the target. To understand the neural mechanisms underlying such a transition (i.e., from nonspatial- to spatial-based target selection), we examined the dependence of neuronal activity in the macaque posterior parietal cortex (PPC) on visual sensory properties and ongoing task demands. Monkeys were trained to perform a visual search task in which either a shape or color singleton within an array was the target, depending on the ongoing search dimension. The visual properties and the task demands were manipulated by independently changing the stimulus features (shape and color), singleton type, and search dimension. We found that a subset of PPC neurons significantly discriminated the target from other stimuli only when the target was defined by a particular stimulus dimension and had specific stimulus features, such as a shape-singleton, bar stimulus (condition-dependent target selection), whereas another subset did so irrespective of the stimulus features and the target-defining dimension (condition-independent target selection). There was thus a great deal of variety in the neural representations specifying the locus of the target. The coexistence of these distinctly different types of target-discrimination processes suggests that the PPC may be situated at the level where the transition from nonspatial- to spatial-based target selection takes place.
Neurophysiological Implementation of a Scheme for Visual Selective Attention

Abstract:Abstract : The method of single cell recording in the behaving monkey was used to study mechanisms of selective attention in extrastriate cortex. The animal indicated whether any item in a display of one or more colour patches matched a previously presented target. Recordings were obtained from 186 single cells in cortical area V4. In the match task, attentional selection of the target patch must be controlled by an advance description of the target colour. No evidence for such enduring target descriptions was found in V4: Few if any units showed sustained, target-specific activity. While there was clear evidence for attentional modulation of the visual response, this modulation was quite different from that previously reported for a location selection task. Units did not always respond more strongly when attention was directed to a patch of their preferred colour; instead the distribution of attentional preferences was bimodal, with roughly half the cells giving stronger responses when their preferred colour was ignored. Such effects, furthermore, were dependent only on preferences for colour (the relevant dimension); location preferences seemed immaterial. The findings are inconsistent with hypotheses for attentional selection based on either input gating or selective priming. Alternative possibilities are discussed.

Abstract:Abstract Objects play an important role in guiding spatial attention through a cluttered visual environment. We used event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (ER-fMRI) to measure brain activity during cued discrimination tasks requiring subjects to orient attention either to a region bounded by an object (object-based spatial attention) or to an unbounded region of space (location-based spatial attention) in anticipation of an upcoming target. Comparison between the two tasks revealed greater activation when attention selected a region bounded by an object. This activation was strongly lateralized to the left hemisphere and formed a widely distributed network including (a) attentional structures in parietal and temporal cortex and thalamus, (b) ventral-stream object processing structures in occipital, inferior-temporal, and parahippocampal cortex, and (c) control structures in medial-and dorsolateral-prefrontal cortex. These results suggest that object-based spatial selection is achieved by imposing additional constraints over and above those processes already operating to achieve selection of an unbounded region. In addition, ER-fMRI methodology allowed a comparison of validly versus invalidly cued trials, thereby delineating brain structures involved in the reorientation of attention after its initial deployment proved incorrect. All areas of activation that differentiated between these two trial types resulted from greater activity during the invalid trials. This outcome suggests that all brain areas involved in attentional orienting and task performance in response to valid cues are also involved on invalid trials. During invalid trials, additional brain regions are recruited when a perceiver recovers from invalid cueing and reorients attention to a target appearing at an uncued location. Activated brain areas specific to attentional reorientation were strongly right-lateralized and included posterior temporal and inferior parietal regions previously implicated in visual attention processes, as well as prefrontal regions that likely subserve control processes, particularly related to inhibition of inappropriate responding.

Midbrain activity supports high-level visual properties in primate temporal cortex

Abstract:Abstract The evolution of the primate brain is marked by a dramatic increase in the number of neocortical areas that process visual information 1 . This cortical expansion supports two hallmarks of high-level primate vision – the ability to selectively attend to particular visual features 2 and the ability to recognize a seemingly limitless number of complex visual objects 3 . Given their prominent roles in high-level vision for primates, it is commonly assumed that these cortical processes supersede the earlier versions of these functions accomplished by the evolutionarily older brain structures that lie beneath the cortex. Contrary to this view, here we show that the superior colliculus (SC), a midbrain structure conserved across all vertebrates 4 , is necessary for the normal expression of attention-related modulation and object selectivity in a newly identified region of macaque temporal cortex. Using a combination of psychophysics, causal perturbations and fMRI, we identified a localized region in the temporal cortex that is functionally dependent on the SC. Targeted electrophysiological recordings in this cortical region revealed neurons with strong attention-related modulation that was markedly reduced during attention deficits caused by SC inactivation. Many of these neurons also exhibited selectivity for particular visual objects, and this selectivity was also reduced during SC inactivation. Thus, the SC exerts a causal influence on high-level visual processing in cortex at a surprisingly late stage where attention and object selectivity converge, perhaps determined by the elemental forms of perceptual processing the SC has supported since before there was a neocortex.

Abstract:Inferior temporal cortex neurons have generally been found to have large visual receptive fields that typically include the fovea and extend throughout much of the visual field. However, a problem of such a large receptive field is that it does not easily support object selection by subsequent processing areas, in that all objects within such a large receptive field might activate inferior temporal cortex cells. To clarify this, we recorded from inferior temporal cortex neurons while macaques searched for objects in complex natural scenes or in plain backgrounds, as normally used. Inferior temporal cortex neuron receptive fields were much smaller in natural scenes (mean radius, 11degrees) than in plain backgrounds (39degrees). With two objects in a scene, one of which was a target for action (a touch), the firing rates were equally high during foveation of the effective stimulus when it was the target and when it was the distractor in both the plain and the complex scenes. With a plain background and two objects present, the receptive fields were much larger (24degrees) for the stimulus when it was the target than when it was the distractor (9degrees). This effect of object-based attention was much less evident in the complex scene, when the receptive fields were small both when the stimulus was a distractor and when it was a target. The results show that the temporal visual cortex provides an unambiguous representation in natural scenes by responding to the object shown at or close to the fixation point.
Foundations of visual form selectivity for neurons in macaque V1 and V2

Abstract:We have measured the visually evoked activity of single neurons recorded in areas V1 and V2 of awake, fixating macaque monkeys, and captured their responses with a common computational model. We used a stimulus set composed of “droplets” of localized contrast, band-limited in orientation and spatial frequency; each brief stimulus contained a random superposition of droplets presented in and near the mapped receptive field. We accounted for neuronal responses with a 2-layer linear-nonlinear model, representing each receptive field by a combination of orientation-and scale-selective filters. We fit the data by jointly optimizing the model parameters to enforce sparsity and to prevent overfitting. We visualized and interpreted the fits in terms of an “afferent field” of nonlinearly combined inputs, dispersed in the 4 dimensions of space and spatial frequency. The resulting fits generally give a good account of the responses of neurons in both V1 and V2, capturing an average of 40% of the explainable variance in neuronal firing. Moreover, the resulting models predict neuronal responses to image families outside the test set, such as gratings of different orientations and spatial frequencies. Our results offer a common framework for understanding processing in the early visual cortex, and also demonstrate the ways in which the distributions of neuronal responses in V1 and V2 are similar but not identical.

Abstract:Abstract Feedback in the brain is thought to convey contextual information that underlies our flexibility to perform different tasks. Empirical and computational work on the visual system suggests this is achieved by targeting task-relevant neuronal subpopulations. We combine two tasks, each resulting in selective modulation by feedback, to test whether the feedback reflected the combination of both selectivities. We used visual feature-discrimination specified at one of two possible locations and uncoupled the decision formation from motor plans to report it, while recording in macaque mid-level visual areas. Here we show that although the behavior is spatially selective, using only task-relevant information, modulation by decision-related feedback is spatially unselective. Population responses reveal similar stimulus-choice alignments irrespective of stimulus relevance. The results suggest a common mechanism across tasks, independent of the spatial selectivity these tasks demand. This may reflect biological constraints and facilitate generalization across tasks. Our findings also support a previously hypothesized link between feature-based attention and decision-related activity.

Sparseness of the Neuronal Representation of Stimuli in the Primate Temporal Visual-Cortex

Abstract:1. To analyze the selectivity and the sparseness of firing to visual stimuli of single neurons in the primate temporal cortical visual area, neuronal responses were measured to a set of 68 visual stimuli in macaques performing a visual fixation task. The population of neurons analyzed had responses that occurred primarily to faces. The stimuli included 23 faces, and 45 nonface images of real-world scenes, so that the function of this brain region could be analyzed when it was processing natural scenes. 2. The neurons were selected to meet the previously used criteria of face selectivity by responding more than twice as much to the optimal face as to the optimal nonface stimulus in the set. Application of information theoretic analyses to the responses of these neurons confirmed that their responses contained much more information about which of 20 face stimuli had been seen (on average 0.4 bits) than about which (of 20) nonface stimuli had been seen (on average 0.07 bits). 3. The sparseness of the representation of a scene or object provided by each of these neurons (which can be thought of as the proportion of stimuli to which the neuron responds, and which is fundamental to understanding the network operation of the system) can be defined as [formula: see text] where ri is the firing rate to the ith stimulus in the set of n stimuli. The sparseness has a maximal value of 1.0. It was found that the sparseness of the representation of the 68 stimuli by each neuron had an average across all neurons of 0.65. This indicates a rather distributed representation. 4. If the spontaneous firing rate was subtracted from the firing rate of the neuron to each stimulus, so that the changes of firing rate, i.e., the responses of the neurons, were used in the sparseness calculation, then the "response sparseness" had a lower value, with a mean of 0.33 for the population of neurons, or 0.60 if calculated over the set of faces. 5. Multidimensional scaling to produce a stimulus space represented by this population of neurons showed that the different faces were well separated in the space created, whereas the different nonface stimuli were grouped together in the space. 6. The information analyses and multidimensional scaling provided evidence that what was made explicit in the responses of these neurons was information about which face had been seen.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)
Comparison of the color selectivity of macaque V4 neurons in different color spaces

Abstract:Chromatic selectivity has been studied extensively in various visual areas at different stages of visual processing in the macaque brain. In these studies, color stimuli defined in the Derrington-Krauskopf-Lennie (DKL) color space with a limited range of cone contrast were typically used in early stages, whereas those defined in the Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) color space, based on human psychophysical measurements across the gamut of the display, were often used in higher visual areas. To understand how the color information is processed along the visual pathway, it is necessary to compare color selectivity obtained in different areas on a common color space. In the present study, we tested whether the neural color selectivity obtained in DKL space can be predicted from responses obtained in CIE space and whether stimuli with limited cone contrast are sufficient to characterize neural color selectivity. We found that for most V4 neurons, there was a strong correlation between responses measured using the two chromatic coordinate systems, and the color selectivities obtained with the two stimulus sets were comparable. However, for some neurons preferring high- or low-saturation colors, stimuli defined in DKL color space did not adequately capture the neural color selectivity. This is mainly due to the use of stimuli within a limited range of cone contrast. We conclude that regardless of the choice of color space, the sampling of colors across the entire gamut is important to characterize neural color selectivity fully or to compare color selectivities in different areas so as to understand color representation in the visual system.

Abstract:Attention exerts a powerful influence on visual perception. The impact of attention on neuronal activity manifests at early visual information processing stages and progressively increases throughout the visual cortical hierarchy. However, the neuronal mechanisms of attention are unresolved. In particular, the rules governing attentional modulation of individual neurons, whether they are facilitated by or suppressed by attention, are not known. To obtain a more granular or neuron- and circuit-level understanding of the mechanisms of attention and to directly test the feature similarity gain model in V1, we compared attentional modulation with neuronal feature selectivity across a large population of V1 neurons in alert and behaving macaque monkeys trained on an attention-demanding contrast-change detection task. We utilized emerging multi-electrode array technology to record simultaneously from V1 neurons spanning all six cortical layers so that we could characterize the laminar position and physiological response properties of diverse V1 neuronal populations. We found significant relationships between attentional modulation and neuronal position within the cortical hierarchy, neuronal physiology, and neuronal feature selectivity. Our results support the feature similarity gain model and further suggest that attentional modulation depends critically upon the match between neuronal feature selectivity and the features required for the task.
Preferential responses to occluded objects in the human visual cortex.

Abstract:How do we see an object when it is partially obstructed from view? The neural mechanisms of this intriguing process are unclear, in part because studies of visual object perception heretofore have largely used stimuli of individual objects, such as faces or common inanimate objects, each presented alone. But in natural images, visual objects are typically occluded by other objects. Computational studies indicate that the perception of an occluded object requires processes that are substantially different from those for an unoccluded object in plain view. We studied the neural substrates of the perception of occluded objects using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) of human subjects viewing stimuli that were designed to elicit or not elicit the percept of an occluded object but were physically very similar. We hypothesized the regions that are selective for occluded objects, if they exist, will be differentially active during the two conditions. We found two regions, one in the ventral object processing pathway and another in the dorsal object processing pathway, that were significantly responsive to occluded objects. More importantly, both regions were significantly more responsive to occluded objects than to unoccluded objects, and this enhanced response was not attributable to low-level differences in the stimuli, amodal completion per se, or the behavioral task. Our results identify regions in the visual cortex that are preferentially responsive to occluded objects relative to other stimuli tested and indicate that these regions are likely to play an important role in the perception of occluded objects.

Abstract:Ever since being described by Mountcastle (Mountcastle, 1957), columnar organization of sensory cortical areas has provided key leverage into understanding the functional organization of neocortex. Columnar or clustered organization of neurons sharing like properties is now known to be widespread, and probably universal in primary sensory areas. Visual cortex in primates consists of a primary area and a large number of secondary areas, which are organized in a manner both hierarchical and parallel (Felleman & Van Essen, 1991; Young, 1993; Young et al., 1995). One major component in the organization of extrastriate visual cortex appears to be the division into dorsal and ventral "streams" of processing (Ungerleider & Mishkin, 1982), each of which is organized hierarchically. Within each, columnar organization exists at early stages, but becomes less clear at higher levels. Columnar organization has been described at the highest level of the ventral stream, inferotemporal cortex (IT, Saleem et al., 1993; Fujita & Fujita, 1996; Tanaka, 1996), but has not been well characterized at the higher levels of the dorsal stream. Hints of such organization are found in the literature (Saito et al., 1986; Lagae et al., 1994), but systematic measurements are needed. In this paper, I report the existence of clustered organization in the medial superior temporal area (MST) of the dorsal stream, which is arguably the highest dominantly visual area on this pathway. I have measured the selectivity of both single- and multiple-unit activity along oblique electrode penetrations through this area to three different kinds of optic flow stimuli, and find that nearby neurons are more similar in their tuning than are more distant ones. This observation documents the existence of some form of clustered organization and supports the importance of this area in the processing of optic flow information.

Abstract:To investigate how information is passed from the inferior temporal cortex (ITC) to other brain regions to enable stimuli to be selected from natural scenes for action, we analysed the responses of single and simultaneously recorded ITC neurons to stimuli presented in complex natural backgrounds. The macaques had to search for two objects on a screen, and a touch of one object was rewarded with juice, and of another object was punished with saline. The magnitudes of the responses of the neurons were similar when the (9×7deg) object was at the fovea in the real scene and with the plain background; but typically the receptive field sizes were much smaller in the real scene (36 deg) than in the plain background (65 deg). Simply introducing a second 10 deg stimulus into the experiment produced some of the effect produced by a complex background (with the receptive field reduced from 65 to 42 deg). In addition to these effects produced purely by introducing a background or second stimulus, attention also influenced the responses. When two stimuli were present in the plain background, the receptive field size was larger (42 deg) when a stimulus was a target for action than when the stimulus was not a target for action (24 deg). Interestingly, the effects of object-based attention were less marked when a complex background was present. When smaller objects (4.5×3.5 deg) were used, the receptive fields became even smaller (e.g. extending less than 10 deg beyond the stimulus). Thus a reduction in receptive field size of inferior temporal cortex neurons is produced by a complex background, and this contributes to facilitating the read-out of information about objects from the inferior temporal cortex, with only a small additional role for object-based attention (see Rolls,ET and Deco,G, 2002, Computational Neuroscience of Vision, Oxford University Press).

Abstract:Primate posterior parietal cortex (PPC) is known to be involved in controlling spatial attention. Neurons in one part of the PPC, the lateral intraparietal area (LIP), show enhanced responses to objects at attended locations. Although many are selective for object features, such as the orientation of a visual stimulus, it is not clear how LIP circuits integrate feature-selective information when providing attentional feedback about behaviorally relevant locations to the visual cortex. We studied the relationship between object feature and spatial attention properties of LIP cells in two macaques by measuring the cells' orientation selectivity and the degree of attentional enhancement while performing a delayed match-to-sample task. Monkeys had to match both the location and orientation of two visual gratings presented separately in time. We found a wide range in orientation selectivity and degree of attentional enhancement among LIP neurons. However, cells with significant attentional enhancement had much less orientation selectivity in their response than cells which showed no significant modulation by attention. Additionally, orientation-selective cells showed working memory activity for their preferred orientation, whereas cells showing attentional enhancement also synchronized with local neuronal activity. These results are consistent with models of selective attention incorporating two stages, where an initial feature-selective process guides a second stage of focal spatial attention. We suggest that LIP contributes to both stages, where the first stage involves orientation-selective LIP cells that support working memory of the relevant feature, and the second stage involves attention-enhanced LIP cells that synchronize to provide feedback on spatial priorities.
