Abstract:Cyprus acquired special importance, especially from the thirteenth century onwards, on the Eastern Mediterranean’s pilgrimage network. Described by contemporary pilgrims as “Terra christianorum ultima”, the island was considered to be the last Christian land in the south-eastern Mediterranean on the pilgrims’ itinerary on their journey to the Holy Land. This study is concentrated on two maps of Cyprus dated to the fourteenth century and preserved in Milan: Biblioteca Ambrosiana, A95 sup. and Venice: Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana, gr. XI.21. It aims to explore the physical and spiritual mobility and interconnectivity in Cyprus during the late Middle Ages and to consider how these contribute to the development of pilgrimage sites directly related with maritime routes, seamen and travellers. These unique nautical maps captured the sea voyage which had Cyprus as a stopover, bringing to light new insights into fourteenth century Cyprus. The maritime shrines discussed in this article, which are usually “mixed” sacred sites, are directly related with sailors’ needs. They integrate into a wide network of communication, removing them partially from their local dimension.

Abstract:An ecclesiastical complex has recently been discovered in Ashdod Maritima – ancient Azotus. The site was excavated in 2019 and 2021. The complex includes a basilica, several rooms, and a chapel on the north side, all decorated with mosaic pavements. A mixed trend comes to light in the mosaics: on the one hand, there is a continuation of the geometric and vegetal compositions and motifs that originated in the Roman world and continued into the Byzantine period. On the other hand, the complex is unique in the many symbols of faith that appear, scattered throughout its parts. All types of crosses are depicted; a medallion with a Greek cross accompanied by the Greek letters iota-chi, and alpha and omega; a medallion with a Latin cross standing on Golgotha Hill with the Greek letters iota-chi and alpha and omega; a large Latin cross standing on Golgotha Hill with two large Greek crosses between its arms; and a medallion with a quote from Psalms. The complex is exceptional in the large number of crosses, the names of the bishops, priest, deacon, and deaconesses who were involved in the construction and decoration or were buried in the complex, and the large number of dated inscriptions.

Abstract:Recent research into agricultural terrace systems across the Jerusalem Highlands, has revealed a significant pattern: the majority of terraces were constructed within the past 700 years, during the Mamluk and Ottoman periods. The motivation for building terrace systems, a labour-intensive endeavour requiring significant long-term investment, appears to be associated with land management policies. This study set out to test this hypothesis, by focusing on the terrace system at Nahal (wadi) Ein-Karim, Jerusalem, and the adjacent site of Khirbet Beit-Mazmil. The study employed portable OSL (POSL) profiling of sediments and OSL dating of the terraces and other related features, alongside archival document analysis. A key element of this study was the examining and dating of plot fences, which serve as tangible representation of shifts in land tenure. The utilisation of POSL profiling facilitated comprehension of their sedimentation dynamics and aided in identifying the optimal sampling approach for OSL dating. The findings highlight a direct link between land endowment practices and terrace construction, particularly evident from the fourteenth century CE onwards. This interdisciplinary approach contributes to our understanding of agricultural terracing dynamics, shedding light on the intricate interplay between land tenure systems, socio-economic factors, and landscape modification practices in the Late-Medieval Southern-Levant.

Abstract:In the article, the author raises the question of the possibility of using sacred texts (the Old and New Testaments) as a historical source reflecting not only the history of mankind receiving divine Revelation, not only reliably describing the objective reality of the Biblical period of history. The author also raises the question of the texts of historical books of the Old Testament as a source of data on civilizational markers that contribute to determining the moments of qualitative evolutionary growth of ancient civilizations. In the long term, the author suggests using the results of the work not only to consider the dynamics of the development of Abrahamic cultures, but also to evaluate modern attempts to create alternative Abrahamic teachings to Christian, both those that failed to move to a supranational level of development and those claiming this perspective. As an example of such a marker, the author considers the phenomenon of pastoral culture reflected in the Old Testament texts, as well as in the texts of the New Testament. The author approaches the assessment of this marker from the perspective of interdisciplinary analysis, simultaneously involving both sacred texts and research by secular scientists in the field of the history of the Ancient East, biblical archaeology, and the history of religions. Considering the manifestations of the marker under study, the author makes an attempt to evaluate it in the context of the general historical development of both the Abrahamic civilization and the civilizations that influenced the formation of the Jewish civilization in the era of Antiquity. The author traces the process of changing the content component at the moment when the Abrahamic civilization reaches a qualitatively new Christian level. From the author's point of view, similar changes occur with each of the complex of markers characterizing the Abrahamic civilization throughout all successive stages of its development.

Abstract:The pilgrimage to the Second Temple included ceremonial elements of strong spiritual significance that elevated the participants to spiritual exaltation. This ceremonial process began with the first steps pilgrims took from their homes towards Jerusalem and concluded when they reached the Temple. This article presents the ceremonial element of the pilgrimage in light of archaeological and anthropological research, integrated with historical sources and with reference to the topography of Jerusalem and its surroundings (including the use of geographic information systems). These tools are used to retrace the path that pilgrims walked and present what the pilgrimage meant for them. The article also investigates whether the physical act of walking can shape the pilgrimage experience and, if so, how this occurs. It is also argued that the main approach to the Temple Mount for Jewish pilgrims led from the south (via the Kidron and Hinnom valleys), and that the construction of this route was designed with geophysical and architectural details meant to enhance the spiritual experience of the pilgrims.

Abstract:Historic Palestine/modern-day Israel has traditionally been visualised through paradisiacal images of splendour: historical, architectural, culinary and cultural. The travel industry's vivid descriptions of exotic fruit, succulent olives, crystal- clear coastlines and peaceful prophets, although romantic, belie the region's long and turbulent history of contested land ownership. As the second Palestinian uprising for independence (Intifada) nears its fifth year, the Holy Land as mythical paradise has transformed into a hellish daily reality fraught with political violence and terror. This article examines how the metaphors and evaluative language employed by a group of Palestinian children from the West Bank city of Ramallah during the second Intifada conceptualize the natural, cultural and political landscapes of Palestine. Particular attention is paid to how important national and cultural symbols such as the olive tree contribute to the establishment of identity.

Abstract:This collaborative collection provides fresh perspectives on Christianity and the conduct of war in medieval East Central Europe and Scandinavia, investigating the intersection between religion, culture, and warfare in territories that were only integrated into Christendom in the Central Middle Ages. The contributors analyze cultures that lay outside Charlemagne's limes and the frontiers of the Byzantine Empire, to consider a region stretching from the Balkans to the Baltic and Scandinavia. The volume considers clerics as military leaders and propagandists, the role of Christian ritual and doctrine in warfare, and the adaptation and transformation of indigenous military cultures. It uncovers new information on perceptions of war and analyzes how local practices were incorporated into clerical narratives, enabling the reader to achieve a complete understanding of the period.

Abstract:DURING the season which has just closed, Sir Charles Marston's archaeological expedition to Jericho, of which Prof. John Garstang is field director, has penetrated to the neolithic levels of earliest occupation which, it is found, cover a considerable portion of the site, under deposits of the Early Bronze Age measuring 27 ft. thick. In the neolithic levels, forming a layer 18 ft. deep, were found sealed deposits in the form of a series of superimposed house structures, in which the floors had been plastered, coloured red, and burnished. There is evidence to show that the walls of these structures had been treated in a similar fashion. One of the most interesting finds, according to a dispatch reporting the results of thj excavation in The Times of April 4, is the head of cult image of human form made of unbaked clay, in which the eyes are represented by shells. It was found in association with sherds of Thessalian painted pottery and fragments of primitive local ware immediately below the Early Bronze Age levels. The flint industry of the neolithic levels is of the characteristic Palestinian type. Although Palestine is not likely to rival Iraq in the number and intrinsic value of its archaeological finds, the sense of its importance grows as further exploration brings to light cumulative evidence of the part it played as a meeting place of cultural influences from a diversity of directions.

Abstract:In the year 600, Gregory the Great wrote to Bishop Serenus of Marseille admonishing him for overly ambitious iconoclastic fervor. Serenus abhorred the use of images in the churches of his diocese as reflexes of pagan worship and wished to have them destroyed. Gregory responded with a defense of images in Christian devotion that was to become the most commonly cited authority on the subject throughout the Middle Ages. Gregory's defense turned around the difficulty of disseminating understanding of the Christian cult, one based on the authority of the written word, among the newly or still-to-be converted peoples of the former Roman empire. ‘For that which is made available through scripture to those who read is presented to the ignorant through pictures, because in pictures they see what they ought to follow; they read in pictures who have no knowledge of letters’.1

Abstract:During the first few centuries CE, the centre of the known world gradually shifted from Alexandria to Constantinople. Combined with a societal shift from pagan beliefs to Christian doctrines, Antiquity gave way to the Byzantine era. While Western Europe entered an extended period of intellectual decline, Constantinople developed into a rich cultural crossroads between East and West. Yet, Byzantine scholarship in astronomy and geography continued to rely heavily on their ancient Greek heritage, and particularly on Ptolemy's Geography. Unfortunately, Ptolemy's choices for his geographic coordinate system resulted in inherent and significant distortions of and inaccuracies in maps centred on the Byzantine Empire. This comprehensive review of Byzantine geographic achievements -- supported by a review of astronomical developments pertaining to position determination on Earth -- aims to demonstrate why and how, when Constantinople fell to the Turks in 1453 and the Ottoman Empire commenced, Byzantine astronomers had become the central axis in an extensive network of Christians, Muslims and Jews. Their influence remained significant well into the Ottoman era, particularly in the context of geographical applications.

Artistic Transfers from Islamic to Christian Art: A Study with Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

Abstract:The aim of this article is to present the main aspects of the methodology employed in my research concerning artistic transfers in the late medieval Mediterranean from Islamic to Christian art, with a special focus on the Iberian Peninsula. The starting point of the research was the selection of certain artistic elements incorporated into western Islamic art during the Almoravid period (in particular, the muqarnaṣ and the pointed-horseshoe arches), to analyse their spread in western Islamic art and beyond. A Geographic Information System (GIS) was applied to create two databases and assess the distribution of these elements in the Mediterranean framework between the 12th and 15th centuries. As a result, different analyses and cartographic material developed with the GIS are thus included in this work. The GIS made it possible to analyse not only geographic aspects of the distribution of these elements but also other complex phenomena related to the muqarnaṣ and the pointed-horseshoe arches in a quantitative way, which allowed me to raise some preliminary hypotheses concerning the use and distribution of both elements in the Mediterranean framework.

Abstract:case studies. Some chapters are more theoretical than others, some more polemic. ‘The myth of the chief: prestige goods, power and personhood in the European Bronze Age’ by Joanna Brück & David Fontijn is evidently polemic and inspiring although, at least in part, I tend to disagree with the relational approach to personhood as presented here which is contradicted by thousands of burials from Central and Northern Europe that speak of a normative, institutionalised social personhood. This issue is also the topic for much of Marie Louise Stig Sørensen’s chapter, ‘Identity, gender and dress in the European Bronze Age’, which in some ways balances and indirectly responds to Brück & Fontijn. But the latter also wish to challenge the whole idea of an advanced Bronze Age political economy based on commodity trade. Here Tobias Kienlin indirectly lends supports in his chapter on Bronze Age metalworking, seeing specialisation but not beyond local kinship groups. One only needs, however, to read a handful of the other contributions on trade, transport, technology and mining, or Christopher Pare’s chapter on ‘Weighing, commodification and money’ to find a different perspective. In this way, the thematic chapters engage the reader in an ongoing theoretical and interpretative argument, which also includes a ‘Rethinking of Bronze Age cosmology’ by Joakim Goldhahn and new interpretations of rock art from the Alps to Scandinavia. Many chapters deal with what adds up to an economic history of the Bronze Age: fields and land divisions, animals, plant cultivation, salt production and trade. Thus, Part I is full of engaging culture historical and interpretative articles that will provide a useful starting point for both the student and the Bronze Age researcher alike.

Abstract:Cultural Dynamics, Ahead of Print. This text is an analysis of a series of pinhole photographs, by Anne Peschken and Marek Pisarsky (Urban Art), entitled East Side Story I (Myślibórz). Photo research on migration and arrival stories, 2019 on-going. The main thesis is that these photographs are a model example of images which, while addressing the theme of migration in the representational layer, also activate the processual and migratory nature of visual forms themselves. In order to substantiate this thesis, the East Side Story project is examined in the following contexts: critical border (art) studies; H. Belting's anthropology of the image; memory studies; re-enactment; the blurriness of images made with a pinhole camera; A. Berleant's re-thinking aesthetics and the notion of aesthetic embodiment. Reflecting on the tension between history, memory, identity and politics and activating the critical potential of borderscaping, Peschken and Pisarsky transform the landscape of the Polish-German borderland into an anachronistic narrative agent. The photographs from the East Side Story series are thus transgenerational corpographies of memory, showing that migration is a key and inalienable element of Polish history.

Abstract:How is it possible in this moment of museum decolonization, critical examination of museum ethics and practice, calls for repatriations and reparations, and restorative justice, that a brand new museum is embroiled in controversy over the acquisition, study, and display of archaeological artifacts? Museum aversion to addressing complex issues of provenance, documentation, fakes, and archaeological site destruction caused by looting results in distorted displays and inaccurate interpretations of the material record and injustice and bias in the contact zone (sensu Bennett, Boast, Clifford, and Pratt). The exhibition of archaeological artifacts from the 'Holy Land', specifically the Dead Sea Scrolls on display at the Museum of the Bible, offers a compelling case study. The Dead Sea Scrolls as contact zone (writ small) allow for the consideration of curatorial decision-making, visitor engagement, honesty, untold stories, and the potential for redemption at the Museum of the Bible.
