Abstract:In 1553-1554, one Pieter Bruegel retired to Sint-Janshuis, Bergen op Zoom: a home where former servants of the Marquises of Bergen could spend their old age. The main argument of the article is that this retiree, who was the former barber-surgeon of Marquis Jan IV (1541-1567), should be considered as the father of the painter Pieter Bruegel the Elder. The latter’s origins are almost completely unknown, yet heavily debated: was he the son of a peasant who painted scenes of life in the countryside, or was he born and raised in an urban environment and did he satirise peasants in his artistic work? An historical reconstruction of the background of the retired barber-surgeon, and the retirement home he spent his final years in, shows he is a strong candidate for having fathered the famous painter. Evidence from the discipline of art history provides further support for the claim that the painter Pieter Bruegel the Elder was the son of a barber-surgeon and came from an urban social-middling-group background with close ties to one of the most important courts and artistic milieus in the Low Countries, the Renaissance palace Markiezenhof in Bergen op Zoom.

Abstract:This section discusses the origin and main types of development of the Renaissance. It gradually developed from Italy to the whole of Europe. Artists find inspiration from ancient Greek works and use scientific techniques such as perspective in their paintings, resulting in works that are full of volume. At the same time, the styles of southern and northern Europe are also different, especially in the southern region of the Netherlands where Bruguel is located. This is the birthplace of humanism, which has made the civic class the main force on the path of the Renaissance. It is precisely because of spiritual liberation that art has become a tool for ordinary people to showcase their thoughts and feelings. This article focuses on the peasant painter Peter Brueghel the elder of the Renaissance. And Bruegel was the last painter in this region after the Renaissance. He is also the founder of the Dutch painting school. Most of his works are inspired by farmers and his own life, as he chose to use art as a weapon to praise virtue and hope for national independence. He is a true 'farmer painter'. At the same time, his creative techniques are also changing over time.

Abstract:Pieter Bruegel the Elder (c.1525-1569) was a well-known 16th century painter who created many realistic canvases related to daily activities of common people of his time. The degree of realism he utilized in his paintings provided a great deal of information about life in the second half the 16th century. He was very talented not only in detailing the human faces in his paintings, but also in reflecting their states of mind. Bruegel's detail has allowed physicians over the years to critically analyze medical conditions in his paintings. This article summarizes certain ophthalmologic diseases depicted by Bruegel. The paper focuses largely on Bruegel's masterpiece, The Parable of the Blind Leading the Blind, because it is perhaps the painter's best known work, and it depicts six blind men, each appearing to suffer from a different cause of blindness. Some other works and their eye pathologies, such as the Adoration of the Magi and The Yawner, are also discussed.

Abstract:The Centre for Reformation and Renaissance Studies began in 1960 as a special rare books collection, focused on Erasmus and humanism, within the framework of Victoria College at the University of Toronto. It has become, however, a vibrant centre for scholarship in the humanities, hosting symposia on interdisciplinary themes and sponsoring numerous publications that are sought out by researchers and academic teachers alike. The nineteen essays collected in Faith and Fantasy in the Renaissance represent highlights from the conference organized by the CRRS in 2007 and feature specialized considerations of religion in the early modern world. The topics range widely to include the learned Christian ideas of Dante, Cusanus, and Erasmus; some popular religious beliefs of the labouring poor in northeastern Italy as documented in Inquisition trials; an interpretation of the naturalistic language used by Renaissance painters to depict a higher, spiritual reality; a reading of Albrecht Dürer’s own religious beliefs about the artist as divinely inspired creator through his famous Self-Portrait; and an essay on how the range of distinctive devotional practices in Rembrandt’s day was reflected in some of his religious subjects, notably paintings of Moses and the Tablets of the Law. In their well-crafted introduction, Olga Pugliese and Matt Kavaler situate these case studies within the overarching theme of the impact of religion on society and culture in the early modern era, a period marked most emphatically by the division of the Western Christian church following the Protestant Reformation, but also a time during which proponents of the ‘catholic’ faith grappled with the experience of encountering other systems of belief, as the perimeters of the known world were expanding greatly and major cities became increasingly cosmopolitan. Professors Pugliese and Kavaler emphasize two principal inquiries that guide the essays: how religion in a wide variety of manifestations influenced both social practices and cultural forms, especially literature and art; and the way imaginative and creative individuals interpreted and reshaped religious beliefs as revealed by cultural artifacts. Although many students of this era may conceive of religion as a dogmatic and legally formulated code of belief and practice, which was perpetuated through the church liturgy and performed punitively in the persecution of heretics, many of the essays instead convey how malleable systems of Christian belief could be under the impact of human imagination, understanding, and control. Abstract:Ancient instruments of high interest for research on the origin and diffusion of early scientific devices in the late XVI - early XVII centuries are reproduced in three paintings by Jan Brueghel the Elder. We investigated the nature and the origin of these instruments, in particular the spyglass depicted in a painting dated 1609-1612 that represents the most ancient reproduction of an early spyglass, and the two sophisticated spyglasses with draw tubes that are reproduced in two paintings, dated 1617-1618. We suggest that these two instruments may represent early examples of keplerian telescopes. Concerning the other scientific instruments, namely an astrolabe, an armillary sphere, a nocturnal, a proportional compass, surveying instruments, a Mordente's compass, a theodolite, etc., we point out that most of them may be associated with Michiel Coignet, cosmographer and instrument maker at the Court of the Archduke Albert VII of Hapsburg in Brussels.

Abstract:Abstract This article discusses a woodcut series with an elaborate iconographic representation of the Flemish city of Ghent, printed in 1524 by Pieter de Keysere. The three-sheet composition consists of a city view, an image of the allegorical Maiden of Ghent, and an extensive heraldic program with the coat of arms of prominent Ghent families and of the Ghent craft guilds. The print series’ production and consumption are unraveled and framed within the wider debate on civic religion in Renaissance Europe. The main argument is that while in this region of Northern Europe civic ideology was equally strong as in Italy, it was not the exclusive playground of the ruling elites. Pieter de Keysere’s woodcut series was aimed at a socially broad, local audience, most particularly Ghent’s corporate middle groups.

Abstract:SummaryThis essay proposes that Haarlem genre artist Jan Miense Molenaer created two paintings, only known today from photographs in the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie (RKD). The pictures depict peasants; two are playing cards, others are observers. Molenaer plausibly used print prototypes after the designs of Pieter Bruegel the Elder, adding observations from life of his present day. The figures are the same in the two pictures, concerning their costumes and gestures. Some slightly differ in their size and emotional reaction in one work with the employment of an extra participant. Repeating protagonists from one painting to the next with little change was a workshop practice Molenaer undertook frequently after he dated his paintings in 1629. It is suggested the artist may have known the prints after the elder Bruegel's inventions through the Antwerp print market, or more directly through Adriaen Brouwer.

Abstract:We have investigated the nature and the origin of the telescopes depicted in three paintings of J. Bruegel the Elder completed between 1609 and 1618. The "tube" that appears in the painting dated 1608-1612 represents a very early dutch spyglass, tentatively attributable to Sacharias Janssen or Lipperhey, prior to those made by Galileo, while the two instruments made of several draw-tubes which appear in the two paintings of 1617 and 1618 are quite sophisticated and may represent early examples of Keplerian telescopes.

Abstract:The article explores the specifics of the functioning and transformation of carnivalesque aesthetics in the paintings of Pieter Bruegel the Elder and in the “Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka” by Nikolai Gogol. The similarities in the transformations that are found in the works of the authors are revealed. The results obtained are conceptualized accounting global separation of the individual out of the community and nature as well as the specifics of the cultural situation.

Abstract:Aim. This paper examines the meaning of The Tower of Babel (1563), Pieter Bruegel’s painting, as a physical, cultural, social, and architectural herald of the modern skyscraper. The interpretation generated will form the background for a contemporary analogy to the modern skyscrapers. These large-scale aesthetic structures, form the sensation of an unnerving lack of space and does not correspond with the existing urban outline. Similar to the tower at the painting, that is a symbol of the lack of connection between nations and peoples, the skyscraper follows in the footsteps of its predecessor that symbolized the confounding of the languages. Methods. Four theoretical approaches will be utilized: (a) Examining the place of the painting within common approaches to the biblical text, based on familiar examples; (b) Converting the biblical story into a painting; (c) Analyzing and evaluating the painting from an aesthetic perspective; (d) In order to overcome the alienation and lack of community we shall utilize the phenomenological notion of place and space, which opens a path to architectural experiencing that promises to connect the individual to the environment, the world, and the community. Results. Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s approach to the biblical story and its artistic portrayal teaches us that The Contemporary Torah (2006, Genesis 11:1-9) is a timeless and universal story that illustrates human pretense, a lack of adequate self-evaluation, arrogance, and stupidity. Conclusion. The artist understood all this very well and possessed the originality and the daring to represent it even in contradiction of contemporary conventions.

Abstract:This special issue draws on new research conducted by the PUblic REnaissance: Urban Cultures of Public Space between Early Modern Europe and the Present project, funded by the Humanities in the European Research Area (see: www.hiddencities.eu). The project considers how public spaces, from street corners to major city squares, were shaped by the everyday activities of ordinary city dwellers between 1450 and 1700. We have focused on the urban fabric, and the ways in which meanings are attached to specific sites in the city (and objects in museum collections) that are often overlooked – the material culture of public space. Our themes are familiar to urban historians – sociability, the circulation of knowledge, information or gossip, authority and its contestation – although by moving between textual sources, maps, the built fabric and museum artefacts, our interdisciplinary and cross-Europe approach is structured around material objects in the early modern period.

Abstract:Several early spyglasses are depicted in five paintings by Jan Brueghel the Elder completed between 1608 and 1625, as he was court painter of Archduke Albert VII of Habsburg. An optical tube that appears in the Extensive Landscape with View of the Castle of Mariemont, dated 1608-1612, represents the first painting of a telescope whatsoever. We collected some documents showing that Albert VII obtained spyglasses very early directly from Lipperhey or Sacharias Janssen. Thus the painting likely reproduces one of the first man-made telescopes ever. Two other instruments appear in two Allegories of Sight made in the years 1617 and 1618. These are sophisticated instruments and the structure suggests that they may be keplerian, but this is about two decades ahead this mounting was in use.

Abstract:This article examines the changing approach towards the representation of the senses in 17th-century Flemish painting. These changes are related to the cultural politics and courtly culture of the Spanish sovereigns of the Southern Netherlands, the Archdukes Albert and Isabella. The 1617–18 painting-series of the Five Senses by Jan Brueghel the Elder and Peter Paul Rubens as well as the pendant paintings on the subject are analyzed in relation to the iconography of the five senses, and in regard to Flemish genre themes. In this context, the excess of objects, paintings, scientific instruments, animals, and plants in the Five Senses are read as an expansion of the iconography of the senses as well as a reference to the courtly material culture of the Archdukes. Framing the senses as part of a cultural web of artifacts, Brueghel and Rubens refer both to elite lived experience and traditional iconography. The article examines the continuity between the iconography of the senses from 1600 onwards, as developed by Georg Pencz, Frans Floris, and Maerten de Vos, and the representation of the senses in the series. In addition, the article shows how certain elements in the paintings are influenced by genre paintings of the courtly company and collector’s cabinet, by Frans Francken, Lucas van Valckenborch and Louis de Caullery. Abstract:The new methodological principles for the research on the Enlightenment and its visual reflection in baroque ceiling painting in southern Germany show a clear correspondence between composition and iconography and the reform concepts of the Catholic Enlightenment. The methodological approach does no longer focus on stylistic questions which do not lead to conclusive results or on the relationship between neoclassicism and Enlightenment but aspects of religious and ideological changes taking place in the 18th-century – devotional rhetoric, instructions regarding the sacrament, or the scholarly approach to history in the sense of the Congrégation de Saint-Maur. The changes occurring during the Enlightenment did not lead to neoclassical forms but visual rhetoric structures in narrative cycles of large ceiling decorations. Earlier ceiling decorations followed the post-Tridentine principle of a correspondence between the calculated effects of the rhetoric of the images and the written words. The viewer should be surprised (maraviglia) by deceptions through ingenious perspectives (inganno degli occhi) as well as rejoice (diletto) in the beauty of the paintings. Later, in the years of the Catholic Enlightenment, we observed a return to the system of horizontal perspective, which focused more exclusively on the iconographic content of the representation. This tendency follows the goals of spiritual literature by authors like Lodovico Antonio Muratori.

Abstract:Inaugurated in 1890, Henri Beyaert’s Square de la Place du Petit Sablon in Brussels is a collective work that integrates urban landscape, architecture, and monumental and decorative sculpture. This landmark is an emblematic product of the relationship between sculpture and architecture. As a case study, the Square de la Place du Petit Sablon exemplifies the difficult creative and economic dynamics as well as the artistic and technical challenges that faced sculptors in Belgium. This article also considers the square in the context of the artistic policies of the Belgian state. The symbolic aspects of the Square de la Place du Petit Sablon have been interpreted as emblematic of romantic nationalism. This article argues that the square reflects the moral, artistic and political ideals of a circle of liberal French-speaking intellectuals, intent on forming a new Belgian society. The article also claims that the purpose of this project was to evoke the renewed alliance of the arts: architecture, applied arts and sculpture.
