Abstract:Noise-based logic is a practically deterministic logic scheme inspired by the randomness of neural spikes and uses a system of uncorrelated stochastic processes and their superposition to represent the logic state. We briefly discuss various questions such as (i) What does practical determinism mean? (ii) Is noise-based logic a Turing machine? (iii) Is there hope to beat (the dreams of) quantum computation by a classical physical noise-based processor, and what are the minimum hardware requirements for that? Finally, (iv) we address the problem of random number generators and show that the common belief that quantum number generators are superior to classical (thermal) noise-based generators is nothing but a myth.

Abstract:We present an axiomatic approach that introduces algorithmic randomness into various classes of structures. The central concept is the notion of a branching class. Through this technical yet simple notion we define measure, metric, and topology in many classes of graphs, trees, relational structures, and algebras. As a consequence we define algorithmically random structures. We prove the existence of algorithmically random structures with various computability-theoretic properties. We show that any nontrivial variety of algebras has an effective measure 0. We also prove a counter-intuitive result that there are algorithmically random yet computable structures. This establishes a connection between algorithmic randomness and computable model theory.
A Demonic Outcome Logic for Randomized Nondeterminism

Abstract:Programs increasingly rely on randomization in applications such as cryptography and machine learning. Analyzing randomized programs has been a fruitful research direction, but there is a gap when programs also exploit nondeterminism (for concurrency, efficiency, or algorithmic design). In this paper, we introduce Demonic Outcome Logic for reasoning about programs that exploit both randomization and nondeterminism. The logic includes several novel features, such as reasoning about multiple executions in tandem and manipulating pre- and postconditions using familiar equational laws -- including the distributive law of probabilistic choices over nondeterministic ones. We also give rules for loops that both establish termination and quantify the distribution of final outcomes from a single premise. We illustrate the reasoning capabilities of Demonic Outcome Logic through several case studies, including the Monty Hall problem, an adversarial protocol for simulating fair coins, and a heuristic based probabilistic SAT solver.

Abstract:This paper is a light walk along interfaces between logic and probability, triggered by a chance encounter with Ed Brinksma. It is not a research paper, or a literature survey, but a pointer to issues. I discuss both direct combinations of logic and probability and structured ways in which logic can be seen as a qualitative version of probability theory. I end by sketching a concrete program for classifying qualitative scenarios that would lend themselves to simple logical reasoning methods, but I also acknowledge a challenge: the ‘unreasonable effective of probability’.

Abstract:The theories of Nash noncooperative solutions and of rationalizability intend to describe the same target problem of ex ante individual decision making, but they are distinctively different. We consider what their essential difference is by giving a unified approach and parallel derivations of their resulting outcomes. Our results show that the only difference lies in the use of quantifiers for each player’s predictions about the other’s possible decisions; the universal quantifier for the former and the existential quantifier for the latter. Based on this unified approach, we discuss the statuses of those theories from the three points of views: Johansen’s postulates, the free-will postulate vs. complete determinism, and prediction/decision criteria. One conclusion we reach is that the Nash theory is coherent with the free-will postulate, but we would meet various difficulties with the rationalizability theory.

Abstract:One of the main lines of research in algorithmic randomness is that of lowness notions. Given a randomness notion R, we ask for which sequences A does relativization to A leave R unchanged (i.e., R^A = R)? Such sequences are call low for R. This question extends to a pair of randomness notions R and S, where S is weaker: for which A is S^A still weaker than R? In the last few years, many results have characterized the sequences that are low for randomness by their low computational strength. A few results have also given measure-theoretic characterizations of low sequences. For example, Kjos-Hanssen proved that A is low for Martin-Löf randomness if and only if every A-c.e. open set of measure less than 1 can be covered by a c.e. open set of measure less than 1. In this paper, we give a series of results showing that a wide variety of lowness notions can be expressed in a similar way, i.e., via the ability to cover open sets of a certain type by open sets of some other type. This provides a unified framework that clarifies the study of lowness for randomness notions, and allows us to give simple proofs of a number of known results. We also use this framework to prove new results, including showing that the classes Low(MLR;SR) and Low(W2R;SR) coincide, answering a question of Nies. Other applications include characterizations of highness notions, a broadly applicable explanation for why low for randomness is the same as low for tests, and a simple proof that Low(W2R;S)=Low(MLR;S), where S is the class of Martin-Löf, computable, or Schnorr random sequences. The final section gives characterizations of lowness notions using summable functions and convergent measure machines instead of open covers. We finish with a simple proof of a result of Nies, that Low(MLR) = Low(MLR; CR).

Abstract:This article is a brief personal account of the past, present, and future of algorithmic randomness, emphasizing its role in inductive inference and artificial intelligence. It is written for a general audience interested in science and philosophy. Intuitively, randomness is a lack of order or predictability. If randomness is the opposite of determinism, then algorithmic randomness is the opposite of computability. Besides many other things, these concepts have been used to quantify Ockham's razor, solve the induction problem, and define intelligence.

Abstract:This is a survey of constructive and computable measure theory with an emphasis on the close connections with algorithmic randomness. We give a brief history of constructive measure theory from Brouwer to the present, emphasizing how Schnorr randomness is the randomness notion implicit in the work of Brouwer, Bishop, Demuth, and others. We survey a number of recent results showing that classical almost everywhere convergence theorems can be used to characterize many of the common randomness notions including Schnorr randomness, computable randomness, and Martin-L\"of randomness. Last, we go into more detail about computable measure theory, showing how all the major approaches are basically equivalent (even though the definitions can vary greatly).

Abstract:This progress report covers recent developments in the area of quantum randomness, which is an extraordinarily interdisciplinary area that belongs not only to physics, but also to philosophy, mathematics, computer science, and technology. For this reason the article contains three parts that will be essentially devoted to different aspects of quantum randomness, and even directed, although not restricted, to various audiences: a philosophical part, a physical part, and a technological part. For these reasons the article is written on an elementary level, combining very elementary and non-technical descriptions with a concise review of more advanced results. In this way readers of various provenances will be able to gain while reading the article.

Abstract:Lévy's Upward Theorem says that the conditional expectation of an integrable random variable converges with probability one to its true value with increasing information. In this paper, we use methods from effective probability theory to characterise the probability one set along which convergence to the truth occurs, and the rate at which the convergence occurs. We work within the setting of computable probability measures defined on computable Polish spaces and introduce a new general theory of effective disintegrations. We use this machinery to prove our main results, which (1) identify the points along which certain classes of effective random variables converge to the truth in terms of certain classes of algorithmically random points, and which further (2) identify when computable rates of convergence exist. Our convergence results significantly generalize earlier results within a unifying novel abstract framework, and there are no precursors of our results on computable rates of convergence. Finally, we make a case for the importance of our work for the foundations of Bayesian probability theory.

Abstract:Where is logic heading today? There is a general feeling that the discipline is broadening its scope and agenda beyond classical foundational issues, and maybe even a concern that, like Stephen Leacock’s famous horseman, it is ‘riding off madly in all directions’. So, what is the resultant vector? There seem to be two broad answers in circulation today. One is logical pluralism, locating the new scope of logic in charting a wide variety of reasoning styles, often marked by non-classical structural rules of inference. This is the new program that I subscribed to in my work on sub-structural logics around 1990, and it is a powerful movement today. But gradually, I have changed my mind about the crux of what logic should become. I would now say that the main issue is not variety of reasoning styles and notions of consequence, but the variety of informational tasks performed by intelligent interacting agents, of which inference is only one among many, involving observation, memory, questions and answers, dialogue, or general communication. And logical systems should deal with a wide variety of these, making information-carrying events first-class citizens in their set-up. The purpose of this brief paper is to contrast and compare the two approaches, drawing freely on some insights from earlier published papers. In particular, I will argue that logical dynamics sets itself the more ambitious diagnostic goal of explaining why substructural phenomena occur, by ‘deconstructing’ them into classical logic plus an explicit account of the relevant informational events.

Abstract:The Bayesian Logic (BLOG) language was recently developed for defining first-order probability models over worlds with unknown numbers of objects. It handles important problems in AI, including data association and population estimation. This paper extends BLOG by adopting generative processes over function spaces - known as nonparametrics in the Bayesian literature. We introduce syntax for reasoning about arbitrary collections of objects, and their properties, in an intuitive manner. By exploiting exchangeability, distributions over unknown objects and their attributes are cast as Dirichlet processes, which resolve difficulties in model selection and inference caused by varying numbers of objects. We demonstrate these concepts with application to citation matching.

Abstract:Taking a broad historical line, we discuss major aspects of rationality that can be analyzed in a logical and computational perspective. Topics include classical notions from the foundations of computability, insights from the development of computer science and AI, and the richer picture of rationality emerging in current logical studies of agency. We also discuss two challenges. Distributed computing and evolutionary games replace ’high rationality’ by ’low rationality’ in behavior, machine learning defies classical views of representation and inference. Both trigger new logical themes in the study of rationality.

Abstract:Separation logic is a substructural logic which has proved to have numerous and fruitful applications to the verification of programs working on dynamic data structures. Recently, Barthe, Hsu and Liao have proposed a new way of giving semantics to separation logic formulas in which separating conjunction is interpreted in terms of probabilistic independence. The latter is taken in its exact form, i.e., two events are independent if and only if the joint probability is the product of the probabilities of the two events. There is indeed a literature on weaker notions of independence which are computational in nature, i.e. independence holds only against efficient adversaries and modulo a negligible probability of success. The aim of this work is to explore the nature of computational independence in a cryptographic scenario, in view of the aforementioned advances in separation logic. We show on the one hand that the semantics of separation logic can be adapted so as to account for complexity bounded adversaries, and on the other hand that the obtained logical system is useful for writing simple and compact proofs of standard cryptographic results in which the adversary remains hidden. Remarkably, this allows for a fruitful interplay between independence and pseudorandomness, itself a crucial notion in cryptography.
