Abstract:According to the Plan of Complex Scientific Research of the World Ocean for 2017–2022, the V.I. Il'ichev Pacific Oceanological Institute, Far Eastern Branch, Russian Academy of Sciences, continues to study the northern part of the Sea of Japan and the Tatar Strait, carrying out a three-year plan of expeditionary research of this region. The expedition aboard the R/V Akademik Oparin (cruise no. 55) spanned from October 2 to 19, 2018. Geophysical and gas-geological study of the water area in the central and southern parts of the Tatar Strait was continued. On the rookery of Tyuleny Island, in the Sea of Okhotsk, information on sea lions and larghas were recorded, three individuals of northern fur seal were tagged with satellite trackers to study their migration routes. CTD observations of the upper layer (down to 600 m) were made on transects across mesoscale eddies in the northern part of the Sea of Japan. Expeditionary research was supported by the Council of the Earth's Hydorsphere of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation.

Abstract:Environmental monitoring of the Russian sectors of the Baltic Sea was continued through three expeditions in 2023: cruise 55 of the R/V Akademik Sergei Vavilov (April) and cruises 54 and 55 of the R/V Akademik Boris Petrov (November and December, respectively). Seasonal quantitative estimates of hydrological–hydrochemical and hydrobiological parameters and carbon dioxide fluxes at the water–air interface were obtained, and the geological and geomorphological conditions of the study areas were refined. The influence of the Neva River on the eastern Gulf of Finland was stable in all seasons and could be traced at a distance of up to 30 nautical miles from Neva Bay. The Southeastern Baltic bottom layer experienced extensive hypoxia and mosaic euxinia. Significant aeration of bottom waters occurred in December due to the combined influence of seasonal convection and downwelling resulting from a series of storms. In both study areas, high values of integral primary production were obtained in April, which were two orders of magnitude higher than the December values. The concentration of chlorophyll a , accordingly, differed by an order of magnitude. The Gulf of Finland was an emitter of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, especially in April, while the Southeastern Baltic absorbed carbon dioxide in April and was a zone of weak emissions in November and December.

Abstract:The aim of the work was to study some deep-sea bottom communities of the Far Eastern seas of Russia using a remotely operated underwater vehicle. Materials were the data of underwater video and photo profiling, as well as direct sampling, performed in 2011–2013, 2016, 2018, 2020 and 2021. As results , an extensive array of new data on the composition, structure, and patterns of distribution of deep sea biota has been obtained. A primary description of the benthic communities of the Gamovsky Canyon (Sea of Japan), cold seeps of the Deryugin Basin (Sea of Okhotsk), and Piip underwater volcano (Bering Sea) has been prepared. Some features of the composition and structure of communities are revealed, and vertical zonality is described. Practical value: the results can be used in the development of environmental protection measures and measures of rational nature management in the waters of the Far Eastern seas of Russia and in areas of potential development of deep-sea mineral resources in the ocean.

Abstract:The results of theoretical analysis and practical implementation of seismoacoustic methods developed for monitoring ice-covered regions in the Arctic are presented and discussed. Special attention is paid to passive seismoacoustic tomography as a unique method of studying the deep structure of the lithosphere and hydrosphere without the use of powerful sources. One of the distinctive features of the considered approach is the use of receivers located on the ice surface to recover characteristics of Arctic-type seismoacoustic waveguide "lithosphere-hydrosphere-ice cover". In passive monitoring, special attention is paid to reducing the noise signal accumulation time required to obtain seismoacoustic wave propagation times, as well as expanding the analyzed frequency bandwidth. The presented results can be used to develop technologies for seasonal and long-term monitoring of the currently observed variability of large areas of the Arctic region due to climatic changes.

Abstract:We consider the chemical composition (ions, elements, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) of atmospheric aerosol in different regions of the North Atlantic, European and Russian parts of the Arctic Ocean, and northern latitude and Far East seas. The studies were carried out onboard marine ships along their cruising routes (RV Akademik Tryoshnikov , RV Akademik Mstislav Keldysh , and RV Professor Multanovsky ). The air samples were collected using the method accepted in the international networks operating under the Acid Deposition Monitoring Network in East Asia (EANET) and European Monitoring and Evaluation Programme (EMEP). The average sum of ion concentrations and the concentrations of individual ions in the aerosol over the seas in the North Atlantic and in the European part of the Arctic Ocean is consistent with measurements in the Laptev and Kara Seas in 2018 and 2019. The high concnetrations of PAHs in aerosol in seas and the Arctic Ocean in the central part of the Russian Arctic coincide with high concentrations of ions and trace elements in the aerosol composition. A difference is noted in the distribution of concentrations of trace elements in aerosol composition between seas of the North Atlantic and central region of the Russian Arctic, which possibly points to different sources of these components.

Abstract:The Gramberg All-Russia Research Institute for Geology and Mineral Resources of the World Ocean (FSBI VNIIOkeangeologia) carries out a wide range of research in the fields of geology, engineering geology, geophysics, and geochemistry. The specialists of the institute perform studies using most-up-to-date equipment in several directions, including the study of the geology and mineral resources of the Arctic, Antarctic and the World Ocean. The geological and tectonic maps and atlases of the Eurasian sector of the Arctic shelf and adjacent deepwater zones of the Arctic Ocean have been compiled. This allow one to recognize the rift-related basins on the East Arctic shelf of Russia, and the conjunction areas of the Lomonosov, Gakkel, and Mendeleev oceanic ridges with the Eurasian continental margin. A comprehensive interpretation of geological and geophysical data has revealed features of the tectonics of the Amerasian Basin, which indicate that the evolution of the basin structures took place under conditions of continental rifting. One of the main scientific conclusions drawn at the preparation of the Submission of the Russian Federation in respect of the continental shelf boundary in the Arctic Ocean is the proof of the continental nature of the structures of the Central Arctic Rise Complex: the Lomonosov Ridge, Podvodnikov Basin, Alpha–Mendeleev Rise, Chukchi Basin, and Chukchi Borderland. This conclusion is confirmed by the characteristics of the main layers of the Earth's crust in the above structures. A geodynamic model of the evolution of the Precambrian complexes of East Antarctica has been developed and the main tectonic provinces of Antarctica have been distinguished. A universal seismostratigraphic model of sedimentary basins has been developed for the marginal seas of East Antarctica. An important area of research in Antarctica was the study of the subglacial Lake Vostok. When studying the history of the formation of sulfide mineralization, it was found that the discharge of hydrothermal ore-bearing solutions most often occurs continuously, and only the intensity of the ore formation process changes with time. The possibility of formation of massive sulfide ore volumes additional to the main surface deposit due to metasomatic replacement of host igneous rocks has also been established.

Abstract:The Arctic seas are now of particular interest due to their prospects in terms of hydrocarbon extraction, development of marine transport routes, etc. Thus, various geohazards, including those related to seismicity, require detailed studies, especially by instrumental methods. This paper is devoted to the ocean-bottom seismographs (OBS) based on broadband molecular-electronic transfer (MET) sensors and a deployment case study in the Laptev Sea. The purpose of the study is to introduce the architecture of several modifications of OBS and to demonstrate their applicability in solving different tasks in the framework of seismic hazard assessment for the Arctic seas. To do this, we used the first results of several pilot deployments of the OBS developed by Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IO RAS) and IP Ilyinskiy A.D. in the Laptev Sea that took place in 2018-2020. We highlighted various seismological applications of OBS based on broadband MET sensors CME-4311 (60 s) and CME-4111 (120 s), including the analysis of ambient seismic noise, registering the signals of large remote earthquakes and weak local microearthquakes, and the instrumental approach of the site response assessment. The main characteristics of the broadband MET sensors and OBS architectures turned out to be suitable for obtaining high-quality OBS records under the Arctic conditions to solve seismological problems. In addition, the obtained case study results showed the prospects in a broader context, such as the possible influence of the seismotectonic factor on the bottom-up thawing of subsea permafrost and massive methane release, probably from decaying hydrates and deep geological sources. The described OBS will be actively used in further Arctic expeditions.
Ice Cover and Associated Water Structure in Lakes Baikal and Hovsgol from Satellite Observations and Field Studies

Abstract:Lakes Baikal (Russia) and Hovsgol (Mongolia) are covered every year by ice for several months. The distribution and state of the ice cover and snow on the ice affect the hydrophysical structure, spring bloom of diatoms and primary productivity, as well as transport on ice. In this respect combination of satellite remote sensingdata with dedicated field measurements provide a unique tool for investigating ice cover state and development. Comparison of ENVISAT and SARAL radar altimetry missions data for Lake Baikal shows that SARAL’s AltiKa instrument can be successfully used for ice discrimination. We observe large decrease of radar return echo in late spring for both ENVISAT and SARAL and discuss it in the context of ice metamorphism. We then address an interesting natural phenomenon—giant ice rings on lakes Baikal and Hovsgol. Using satellite imagery and photography for 1974–2015 we have identified 45 rings on Lake Baikal (compared to 13 previously known) and also for the first time 4 rings on Lake Hovsgol. The results of our hydrographic surveys beneath the ice rings show the presence of warm double-convex lens-like eddies before and during manifestation of ice rings. These eddies are the driving factor for the formation of ice rings in these lakes. We reassess the existing hypotheses of ice ring formation and discuss the potential mechanisms of eddy formation.

Abstract:An increase of commercial navigation in the Arctic along the Northern Sea routes will involve the use of large-capacity vessels of high ice-class during the non-escorted transit. To ensure the safety of Arctic navigation, it is necessary to have unbiased data on the influence of ice thickness on vessels' speed and maneuverability. The paper suggests using a geoinformation system which includes data on speed and routes of the vessels of various capacities, as well as data of remote sensing of the earth about ice conditions. Two parts of traditional routes in the western part of the Russian Arctic were considered: the sea crossing from the Barents Sea to the Kara Sea through the Kara Strait and the transition from the Barents Sea to the Kara Sea through the Cape of Desire. A joint study of this data (layers) on the example of winter navigation of 2018 provides detailed information on the trends of speed reduction of ships under the conditions of fully consolidated ice. Based on the results of the study, the results are presented for four groups of vessels with different gross tonnage, capacity, ice pass and draft. To compare the results, the measured velocities were normalized to relative ones, which made it possible to identify common dependencies and trends. The availability of archival data on measurements of ice thickness in the geographic area under study and the predictive models for increasing ice thickness during the winter time mad it possible to develop adequate methods aimed at estimating the change in the properties of ice by varying the speed of vessels of various classes on the routes in the water area of the Northern Sea Route. Statistical processing of vessel speed in the ice fields made it possible to identify the sameness of the speed-reduction trends for the main groups of vessels and the distinctive features associated with the vessel's power and the use of icebreaker support.

Abstract:In the Arctic Ocean (AO) of today, there are noticeable changes in the composition and structure of biological communities inhabiting the water-ice environment. Over the past two decades, a decrease in the number of species of the sea ice flora and fauna has been noted in the central regions of the AO due to the changing physical environment of their habitat. In view of the current climatic instability in the AO, it is important to monitor and evaluate their composition, structure and dynamics of development. It is also important to preserve the methods of processing the materials collected in order to compare the state of the water-ice biota on similar spatial and temporal scales of the basin. In the present study, centric and pennate diatoms dominating in ice floristic communities were selected as indicators of changes. The aim of the work is to analyze the physical state of the water-ice environment and the species composition of ice diatoms based on the materials of the expeditions within the NABOS program at the Research Vessel (R/V) “Akademik Treshnikov” in the Arctic Basin in 2018 and 2021. The field work included observations of the state of the sea-ice cover in the area of the expeditions, the selection of ice cores to assess the salt composition and species composition of the algae, as well as CTD-sounding of the under ice — water layer. The analysis of the materials collected showed significant differences in the species composition and abundance of algae between the seasons, which indicates the formation of independent floristic communities in the current conditions of unstable physical environment in the central regions of the AO, which confirms the previously obtained results in the period 2007–2015. The materials under discussion were obtained in a short period of time and in limited spaces in the zones of production of annual ice in the waters of the shelf seas and zones of removal to the central regions of the AO. At the same time, short-term observations provide “instant” information about the qualitative and quantitative state of sea-ice biological communities. In order to obtain reliable estimates, long-term observations are needed, which may be organized in the near future based on new logistical approaches to the study of the marine Arctic.

Abstract:Abstract Russia faces a promising task of integrated use of various resources of the Arctic, including tourism and recreation. In order to provide a sustainable socio-economic development of the polar regions and the country as a whole, it is necessary to conduct interdisciplinary studies of the resources and assimilation capacity of geographical systems based on methods used in socio-economic and physical geography, as well as in cultural geography. In the article the present conditions and trends in the tourism development of the Arctic Zone of the Russian Federation (AZRF) are considered as well as the features of its organization in the Barents Sea Region. The existing problems and prospects of the tourism development in the Arctic under modern conditions are discussed on the example of actively increasing cruise tourism in the region. Moreover, the factors limiting the development of Arctic tourism in the Russian Federation are considered. Conclusions based on comprehensive analysis of current opportunities and constraints in the Barents Sea region are drawn about the need for reconstruction and development of maritime transport and navigation infrastructure throughout the planned ship corridor along the Northern Sea Route (NSR) and the resumption of the ports of Dudinka, Dikson, Tiksi, Pevek and Provideniya. Further progress of mass ecological and cruise tourism in the Barents Sea basin requires scientific rationing of visits to protected areas and the organization of environmental events in places of excursions.

Abstract:The Stratigraphic Drilling Project of the Russian Arctic Shelf, conducted by the Rosneft Oil Company, focuses their attention on the stratigraphic age and composition of rock complexes of the sedimentary basins. In 2021, six shallow boreholes for the first time were drilled with core sampling in the eastern part of the Laptev Sea. Drilling recovered sedimentary rocks of the folded basement that have been dated to the Late Barremian–Early Aptian. The synrift complex lying with angular unconformity has been dated to the Paleocene. The section of the overlying Eocene–Pleistocene sediments contains significant hiatuses. The data obtained by drilling together with the results of seismic interpretation allowed us to clarify the regional geological model and to date the stages of its tectonic evolution.

Thus, one can already observe discussions on disputed shelf zones where the deposits are located. Abstract:The Barents Sea shelf is one of the most economically promising regions in the Arctic in terms of its resources and geographic location. However, benthic microbial communities of the northeastern Barents Sea are still barely studied. Here, we present a detailed systematic description of the structures of microbial communities located in the sediments and bottom water of the northeastern Barents Sea based on 16S rRNA profiling and a qPCR assessment of the total prokaryotic abundance in 177 samples. Beta- and alpha-diversity analyses revealed a clear difference between the microbial communities of diverse sediment layers and bottom-water fractions. We identified 101 microbial taxa whose representatives had statistically reliable distribution patterns between these ecotopes. Analysis of the correlation between microbial community structure and geological data yielded a number of important results—correlations were found between the abundance of individual microbial taxa and bottom relief, thickness of marine sediments, presence of hydrotrolite interlayers, and the values of pH and Eh. We also demonstrated that a relatively high abundance of prokaryotes in sediments can be caused by the proliferation of Deltaproteobacteria representatives, in particular, sulfate and iron reducers.
