Abstract:Hydrothermal synthesis of β zeolite was studied from aluminosilicate sol containing fluorion and with tetraethylammonium bromide as a template. The physio-chemical and catalytic properties were investigated by using XRD, IR, DTA-TG, SEM and TEM etc. The optimized sol composition was found to be within the range of n(SiO2)/n(Al2O3) = 25-55;n(NaF)/n(NaOH)=0. 5-3. 0;n (NaOH+NaF)/n(SiO2)=0. 1-0. 8;n(TEABr)/n(SiO2)=0. 55-0. 88;n(H2O)/n(SiO2)=16-25 under 140-145°C. The crystallization time was 7-10d. β zeolite is stable under the temperature up to 950°C and the suitable regeneration temperature lies between 500-700°C. The most probable crystal-size distribution of β zeolite is as large as 4-5μm. As a catlyst, β zeolite showes significant activity for the reaction of benzene to yield isopropyl benzene.
Synthesis of β Zeolite Using Tetraethylammonium Bromide Together with Fluoride as Composite of Template (II) - Studies on Crystallization Process of β Zeolite

Abstract:The crystallization process of β zeolite has been investigated by using FT-IR, XRD, TG, SEM, and ICP-AES. The samples were obtained by hydrothermal synthesis at 140 °C and chemical composition of the mixture used for synthesis can be expressed as n(Al2O3) : n(SiO2) : n(TEABr) : n (Na2O) : n(NaF) : n(H2O) : n [(NH4)2O] = 1 : 25 : 7. 5 : 2. 5 : 3. 75 : 550 : 6. 25. The crystallization curve of zeolite β exhibits a typical S-shaped characteristic. The typical framework IR-absorptions at 567 and 518 cm-1 have different natures. The former is detected at the beginning of induction period and its intensity changes a little in induction period, but exhibits a direct correlation with crystallinity in growth period. The latter is not detected in the induction period, but exhibits the same trend in growth period. The large amorphous SiO2-Al2O3 particles which are visible at the beginning of crystallization change into small grains during the induction period. n(SiO2)/n(Al2O3) ratio of the solid phases obtained at different synthesis time changes significantly during the induction period, but changes a little in growth period. So the β zeolite crystal nucleus are formed via liquid-phase synthesis mechanism. A typical gel in synthesis of β zeolite is transformed initially into a solid, which contains richer aluminium, minor F- and occluded TEA species. The aluminosilicate gel particles are dissolved by F- during the induction period and the transition complex, which has a specific weak X-ray diffraction peak at 2θ = 22. 8° and specific DTG pattern, is formed at the turning point from induction period to growth period. During the growth period Si and Al transport from the liquid to the solid phase at almost the same rates. F- anion has greater influence on the formation and turning of transition complex.

Abstract:Siliceous Beta zeolite and its metal-containing counterparts are effective adsorption and catalysis materials. To develop facile and efficient synthesis strategy would facilitate their large-scale production and application. Herein, we report the fluoride-free hydrothermal synthesis of siliceous Beta achieved by an inorganic cation-driven strategy. It is found that the types of inorganic cations are more critical than anions in determining the product phase. Inorganic cations with smaller sizes (such as Li+, Na+ and Mg2+) facilitate the synthesis of siliceous Beta, while the larger ones (such as K+, Ca2+ and NH4 +) tend to give rise to impurity or amorphous materials. Crystallization mechanism investigation based on the Na+-added system revealed that inorganic cations can effectively promote the fast polymerization of SiO2 colloids at the initial stage. The crystallization occurs on the polymerized composites, yielding siliceous Beta with high solid yield. The resultant material is well characterized, which possesses few framework defects, high hydrophobicity and large adsorption uptake for toluene (one of the common volatile organic compounds). Breakthrough experiments further evidence the dynamic toluene adsorption capacity of the material is 24% higher than that of siliceous Beta synthesized by fluoride route.

Abstract:Small crystal zeolite Beta with SiO2/Al2O3 ratios ranging from 30 to 400 has been synthesized in a biphasic H2O–CTAB–Alcohol system using colloidal precursor which contains secondary building units of zeolite Beta as the silica and aluminum sources. The experimental results evidenced that the synthesis system employed here resulted in readily the formation of small crystal size zeolite Beta, and the crystallite aggregates consisting of many small particles with size close to the range of nanometer were obtained. The obtained zeolite Beta samples synthesized in the biphasic system displayed higher catalytic activity for n-hexane hydrocracking than that synthesized in single aqueous system.

Abstract:It was found that either polymorph B or polymorph C of zeolite beta can be obtained from the same structure directing agent: 4,4-dimethyl-4-azonia-tricyclo[5.2.2.0(2,6)] undec-8-ene hydroxide. The synthesis occurs through a consecutive process where polymorph B is first formed and then transformed into polymorph C. It is possible to produce a zeolite highly enriched in polymorph B, provided that the transformation of this phase into polymorph C is slowed down up to the point where polymorph C is only detected at trace levels. The structure of polymorph B was determined for the first time by electron crystallography with SAED and HRTEM from areas of unfaulted polymorph B crystals.

Abstract:SSZ-82 (SEW) is a 12 × 10 membered ring zeolite that offers intriguing catalytic possibilities due to the intersection of pore channels of differing dimensions. Previously, SSZ-82 was a zeolite that could only be directly made as a borosilicate. Here, we show that the borosilicate material can be used as seeds to synthesize an aluminosilicate product. Aluminum-containing SSZ-82 (Al-SSZ-82) was directly synthesized using an interzeolite conversion method: FAU zeolite was the parent zeolite, and boron-containing SSZ-82 (B-SSZ-82) was used as seeds. The conversion of FAU to Al-SSZ-82 was monitored with time, and the use of SSZ-82 seeds, organic structure-directing agent, Na+, and total OH– were all shown to be important for successful conversion to SSZ-82. In addition, the surface area and heteroatom of the SSZ-82 seeds played important roles in the conversion rate: calcining the seeds, grinding the seeds down to smaller particles, and using heteroatoms that are less stable all increased the kinetics of the conversion.

Abstract:Pure silica zeolite beta materials were synthesized by an unconventional method of aging and drying the starting gels at room temperature followed by the conventional hydrothermal treatment. In addition, organic solvents were added to selected samples as complementary structure directing agents (SDA). The influence of the aging–drying method, complementary SDA addition and crystallization time upon the synthesis of pure silica zeolite beta were studied. Samples were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), thermogravimetric analyses (TGA) and nitrogen adsorption. Results revealed that the aging–drying process increased crystallization rate, produced crystals with unique morphology and scaled-surface and allowed polymorph A enrichments to about 68–70%. It was also found that addition of organic solvents during the thermal treatment tunes the crystal morphology but, does not affect the polymorphic enrichment.

Abstract:Zeolite Beta is accepted as a highly faulted intergrowth of two polymorphs, A and B, which are found in a 60:40 ratio. However, a polymorph C was also suggested as a hypothetical structure. Recently, pure silica polymorph C of Beta family has been obtained using 4,4-dimethyl-4-azonia-tricyclo[5.2.2.0(2,6)]undec-8-ene hydroxide as structure directing agent. The formation of all-silica BEC occurs by a phase transformation from a BEA-BEB intergrown material. In order to favour the intermediate product, is necessary to slow the phase transformation. With this study, it has been possible to obtain most selectivity towards the intermediate phase, in such a way that the presented methodology allows obtaining a Beta zeolite with the highest content in polymorph B up to now. SAED patterns from different areas and directions show that most crystallites contain twins of polymorph B or stacking faults. The twinning and stacking faults are observed more frequently near the surface than in the bulk of the crystallites. The structure of polymorph B has been successfully determined by SAED and HRTEM from the areas of unfaulted polymorph B crystals

Abstract:The solvent-free synthesis of zeolites has attracted great attention due to its environmental benefits and high efficiency. In this study, the effects of amounts of synthesis powder, water and sodium hydroxide on the crystallization rate and morphology of zeolite crystals are investigated. The samples are characterized by XRD, SEM and N2 adsorption/desorption isotherm measurement. It is found that the crystallization rate increases with the increase of the amount of synthetic powder and also increases with the increase of water content in the synthetic powder. When a little amount of water (H2O/SiO2 = 1.04) is added into the synthetic powder (SiO2:0.15NH4F:0.035TPABr), the crystallinity almost reaches 100% after crystallization at 175 °C for 9 h. The addition of a little amount of sodium hydroxide (NaOH/SiO2 = 0.09) can decrease the crystal size and the addition of higher amount of NaOH (NaOH/SiO2 = 0.19) can promote the growth along a-axis, resulting in spherical silicalite-1 crystals (i.e., twins). Moreover, the addition of NaOH may incorporate mesopores into silicalite-1 zeolite crystals.

Abstract:In this study, we report a new, simple approach to the preparation of high-surface-area zeolitic silica (HZS) with well-defined mesoporosity by combining hydrothermal synthesis and sol-gel processing. N-2 adsorption-desorption measurements show that HZS has a BET surface area of 678-723 m(2) g(-1) and well-defined bimodal pores at 5.5 and 26.0-34.5 Angstrom. XRD, TEM and FT-IR show that HZS has a typical zeolite MFI structure. HZS is thermally stable and has tunable pore size and pore volume, and thus is promising for applications in catalysis, separation, and micro electronics. The described approach also appears general and may be readily extended to zeolitic alumino silicates by using suspensions of other zeolite nanoparticles.

Abstract:The organic structure-directing agent-free synthesis of zeolite Beta was carried out using several zeolite Beta seeds that differed in SiO2/Al2O3 ratio and crystal size. The synthesis was studied using X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, ultraviolet-Raman spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and N2 physisorption. Synthesis was successful using different zeolite Beta seeds including pure silica seeds. During the induction period, the seeds underwent dissolution. The SiO2/Al2O3 ratio and crystal size, pretreatment (calcination), and seed addition time had a significant influence on seed dissolution behavior, crystallization process, and product. Morphological studies revealed that the seed residues produced by dissolution (except for pure silica) resulted in the formation of “immobilized” surface nuclei, which allowed for the dense growth of fresh small zeolite Beta crystals. The dissolved small seed fragments yielded dispersed nuclei, which formed relatively scattered small zeolite Beta crystals thought to be the main nuclei source of the pure silica seed. It is suggested that the use of an appropriately high SiO2/Al2O3 ratio, small size, and precalcined zeolite Beta seed is helpful for the synthesis of highly crystalline and pure zeolite Beta from the organic structure-directing agent-free gel.

Abstract:A highly efficient induction focusing on the nucleation promotion and the framework elements consumption always plays a critical role in the design and synthesis of nanosized zeolitic materials. In this work, the highly crystalline nanosized Beta zeolite was hydrothermally synthesized following the seed-assisted strategy without using any additional organic structure directing agents (OSDAs) or preformed composite building units (CBUs). The physicochemical properties of the resulting nanosized zeolite Beta was strongly affected by the composition of the initial aluminosilicate gel, which can be facilely optimized just by matching the Si/Al molar ratio to the crystallization treatment. The superior mesoporous and strong acidic properties were obtained at a Si/Al ratio of similar to 50. As for the framework assembly, Raman and XRD results reveal that the key factor is the continuous formation and accumulation of 6-ring structures (6-MRs) inside the aluminosilicate gel. After a 4 days and 22 h' sufficient induction, the 5-MR and 4-MR structures were built through the bonding of 6-MR structures when fabricating the mtw, bea, and mor CBUs, and finished the assembly of Beta zeolite in 2 h. The obtained nanosized Beta zeolite exhibits a great crystallinity and a highly accessible mesopore structure that was composed solely of interparticle-type mesopores, as well as a strong Bronsted-type acidity.

Abstract:By using imidazole-substituted quaternary boron compound NaB (Im)(4) (Im=imidazole) as a structure directing agent (SDA) in the zeolite synthesis, we successfully obtained single crystals of aluminophosphate AlPO4-11 under solvothermal conditions. Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, F-19 and B-11 NMR studies showed that these quaternary boron compounds acted as SDA buffers, undergoing the decomposition process to slowly release a low concentration of imidazole molecules under solvothermal conditions. The latter served as SDAs to form a limited number of zeolite nuclei, thus leading to the growth into large single crystals. Under similar conditions, the direct use of the corresponding free imidazole molecules in the synthesis produced only fine powders. This approach could be potentially applied to synthesize large crystals of other zeolites, given the availability of various quaternary boron compounds.

Abstract:Mesoporous zeolites are useful solid catalysts for conversion of bulky molecules because they offer fast mass transfer along with size and shape selectivity. We report here the successful synthesis of mesoporous aluminosilicate zeolite Beta from a commercial cationic polymer that acts as a dual-function template to generate zeolitic micropores and mesopores simultaneously. This is the first demonstration of a single nonsurfactant polymer acting as such a template. Using high-resolution electron microscopy and tomography, we discovered that the resulting material (Beta-MS) has abundant and highly interconnected mesopores. More importantly, we demonstrated using a three-dimensional electron diffraction technique that each Beta-MS particle is a single crystal, whereas most previously reported mesoporous zeolites are comprised of nanosized zeolitic grains with random orientations. The use of nonsurfactant templates is essential to gaining single-crystalline mesoporous zeolites. The single-crystalline nature endows Beta-MS with better hydrothermal stability compared with surfactant-derived mesoporous zeolite Beta. Beta-MS also exhibited remarkably higher catalytic activity than did conventional zeolite Beta in acid-catalyzed reactions involving large molecules.

Abstract:Stable extra-large-pore zeolites are desirable for industrial purposes due to their ability to accommodate bulky reactants and diffusion through channels. Although there are several extra-large pore zeolites reported, stable ones are rare. Thus, their stabilization is a feasible strategy for industrial applications. Here, an extra-large-pore zeolite EWT with boron substitution is presented, and the resulting zeolite B-RZM-3 increased the thermal stability from 600 °C in its silica form to 850 °C. The crystal structure, determined by combining continuous rotation electron diffraction (cRED) and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), shows that B atoms preferentially substitute the interrupted (HO)T(OT)3 (Q3 ) sites and are partially converted into 3-coordination to relax framework deformation upon heating. After Al-reinsertion post-treatment, Al-B-RZM-3 shows higher ethylbenzene selectivity and ethylene conversion rate per mol acid site than commercial ZSM-5 and Beta zeolite in benzene alkylation reaction. Synthesizing extra-large-pore zeolite in borosilicate form is a potential approach to stabilize interrupted zeolites for commercial applications.

Abstract:We demonstrate here a seed-directed synthesis (SDS) of Beta, Levyne, and Heulandite zeolites in the absence of organo-templates, where the seeds drive crystallization of the zeolites. Compared with conventional Beta synthesized in the presence of organic templates, Beta-SDS exhibits large textural parameters, stable Al species, and unprecedentedly high density of active sites, resulting in superior catalytic activity and selectivity for valuable products in catalysis.

Abstract:B-Al-ZSM-5 zeolite was synthesized on granules of boron–silicon porous glass in a vapor mixture of ethylamine and water at 180°C. The as-synthesized zeolite obtained by vapor–solid reaction and the calcined B-Al-ZSM-5 zeolites were characterized with 11B, 29Si, 27Al, 13C MAS NMR, XRD, IR, and TG/DTG/DTA. The various states of the species of BO, AlO, and SiO in both the amorphous porous glass and the as-synthesized zeolite were inspected in detail with 11B, 29Si and 27Al MAS NMR. The complete incorporation of BO, AlO, and SiO into the framework of the zeolite was confirmed. The possible position of the template in the zeolite was investigated with 13C MAS NMR. The unit cell of the zeolite contracts with the incorporation of boron atoms into the framework. The crystallinity of the as-synthesized zeolite is about 93% with orthorhombic symmetry both before and after calcination. After calcination, the crystallinity of the zeolite decreases due to B removal. The number of ethylamine molecules located at different positions of the zeolite channels is discussed in relation to TG/DTG/DTA data.
