Abstract:In contrast to transcription in eukaryotes, in the absence of the nuclear barrier, transcription in bacteria can be directly coupled to RNA translation such that a ribosome binds directly to nascent RNA that is still attached to an actively transcribing RNAP. This serves to protect emerging RNA, which, unlike its counterpart in eukaryotes, is not capped or processed to become more stable. This ensures that new transcripts are expressed and prevents unstable RNA from attacking the genome and forming deleterious structures such as R-loops. Although transcription and translation have been studied extensively in bacteria, how these two processes are coupled is less well understood.
