Abstract:The widespread adoption of smart terminals has significantly boosted the market potential for wearable electronic devices. Two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials show great promise for flexible, wearable electronics of next-generation electronic materials and have potential in energy, optoelectronics, and electronics. First, this review focuses on the importance of functionalization/defects in 2D nanomaterials, a discussion of different kinds of 2D materials for wearable devices, and the overall structure–property relationship of 2D materials. Then, in this comprehensive review, we delve into the burgeoning realm of emerging applications for 2D nanomaterial-based flexible wearable electronics, spanning diverse domains such as energy, medical health, and displays. A meticulous exploration is presented, elucidating the intricate processes involved in tailoring material properties for specific applications. Each research direction is dissected, offering insightful perspectives and dialectical evaluations that illuminate future trajectories and inspire fruitful investigations in this rapidly evolving field.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2-D) materials of atomic thickness have attracted considerable interest due to their excellent electrical, optoelectronic, mechanical, and thermal properties, which make them attractive for electronic devices, sensors, and energy systems. Scavenging the otherwise wasted energy from the ambient environment into electrical power holds promise to address the emerging energy needs, in particular for the portable and wearable devices. The versatile properties of 2-D materials together with their atomically thin body create diverse possibilities for the conversion of ambient energy. The present review focuses on the recent key advances in emerging energy-harvesting devices based on monolayer 2-D materials through various mechanisms such as photovoltaic, thermoelectric, piezoelectric, triboelectric, and hydrovoltaic devices, as well as progress for harvesting the osmotic pressure and Wi-Fi wireless energy. The representative achievements regarding the monolayer heterostructures and hybrid devices are also discussed. Finally, we provide a discussion of the challenges and opportunities for 2-D monolayer material-based energy-harvesting devices in the development of self-powered electronics and wearable technologies.

Abstract:The ever-increasing demand for energy as a result of the growing interest in applications such as Internet of Things (IoT), and wearable systems etc. call for the development of self-sustained energy harvesting solutions. In this regard, the 2D materials have sparked an enormous interest recently, owing to their outstanding properties such as ultra-thin geometry, high electromechanical coupling, large surface area to volume ratio, tunable band gap, transparency and flexibility. This has unravelled noteworthy advancements in energy harvesters like triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), piezoelectric nanogenerator (PENG) and photovoltaics (PV) based on 2D materials. This review introduces the properties of different 2D materials including graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), MXenes, black phosphorous (BP), hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs). A detailed discussion of the recent developments in the 2D materials-based PENG, TENG and photovoltaic devices is included. The review also considers the performance enhancement mechanism and importance of 2D materials in energy harvesting. Finally, the challenges and future perspectives are laid out to present a future research direction for the further development and extension of 2D materials-based energy harvesters.

Abstract:Nowadays, wearable devices mainly exist in the form of portable accessories with various functions, connecting various kinds of terminals like mobile phones to form various wearable systems. In a wearable system, the wearable power supply device is the key component as energy dispenser for all devices. Nanosheets, a kind of two-dimensional material, which always displays a high surface-to-volume ratio and thus is lightweight and has remarkable conductive as well as electrochemical properties, have become the optimal choice for wearable power supply devices. The development and status of nanosheet-based wearable power supply devices including nanosheet-based wearable batteries, nanosheet-based wearable supercapacitors, nanosheet-based wearable self-powered energy suppliers are introduced in this article. Besides, the future opportunities and challenges of wearable devices are discussed.

Abstract:As an evolutionary success in life science, wearable biosensor systems, which can monitor human health information and quantify vital signs in real time, have been actively studied. Research in wearable biosensor systems is mainly focused on the design of sensors with various flexible materials. Among them, 2D materials with excellent mechanical, optical, and electrical properties provide the expected characteristics to address the challenges of developing microminiaturized wearable biosensor systems. This review summarizes the recent research progresses in 2D-materials-based wearable biosensors including e-skin, contact lens sensors, and others. Then, we highlight the challenges of flexible power supply technologies for smart systems. The latest advances in biosensor systems involving wearable wristbands, diabetic patches, and smart contact lenses are also discussed. This review will enable a better understanding of the design principle of 2D biosensors, offering insights into innovative technologies for future biosensor systems toward their practical applications.

Abstract:Power systems and electronic devices that are bulky and rigid are not practical for use in wearable applications that require flexibility and breathability. To address this, a range of 1D energy harvesting and storage devices have been fabricated that show promise for such applications compared with their 2D and 3D counterparts. These 1D devices are based on fibres that are flexible and can accommodate deformation, for example, by twisting and stretching. The fibres can be woven into textiles and fabrics that breathe freely or can be integrated into different materials that fit the curved surface of the human body. In this Review, the development of fibre-based energy harvesting and storage devices is presented, focusing on dye-sensitized solar cells, lithium-ion batteries, supercapacitors and their integrated devices. An emphasis is placed on the interface between the active materials and the electrodes or electrolyte in the 1D devices. The differing properties of these interfaces compared with those in 2D and 3D devices are derived from the curved surface and long charge transport path in 1D electrodes.

Abstract:Wearable multimodal sensors could enable the continuous, non‐invasive, precise monitoring of vital human signals critical for remote health monitoring and telemedicine. Atomically thin materials with intriguing physical characteristics, rich chemistry, and extreme sensitivity to external stimuli are attractive for implementing high‐performance wearable sensors. Despite the increased interest and efforts in 2D materials‐based wearable sensors, reducing the manufacturing and integration costs while improving the product performance remains challenging. Previous review articles provided good coverage discussing the material and device aspects of 2D materials‐based wearable devices. However, few reviews discussed the status quo, prospects, and opportunities for the scalable nanomanufacturing of 2D materials wearable sensors for health monitoring. To fill this gap, the recent advances in 2D materials‐based wearable health sensors are reviewed. The structure design, fabrication processing, the mechanisms of 2D materials‐based wearable health sensors, and their applications for human health monitoring are discussed. More significantly, a systematic discussion of the state‐of‐the‐art and technological gaps for enabling future design and nanomanufacturing of 2D materials wearable health sensors are provided. Finally, the challenges and opportunities associated with the scalable nanomanufacturing of 2D wearable health sensors are discussed.

Abstract:Owing to unique structures and properties, 2D layered materials have exhibited great potentials for energy-related applications. Among these, 2D Bi-based layered materials which possess intriguing characteristics for energy conversion and storage systems have attracted tremendous attention. In this review, the structural and electronic properties of 2D Bi-based layered materials classified into four categories (unitary, binary, ternary and multinary) are introduced. Their promising applications in energy conversion and storage are reviewed in details, with particular emphasis on photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, solar cells, thermoelectrics, optoelectronics and rechargeable batteries. Finally, based on current research progress, future perspectives for exploring and developing advanced 2D Bi-based layered energy conversion and storage materials are presented.

Abstract:This review summarizes recent progress in 2D p‐type semiconductor‐based wearable sensors. The review covers various aspects, including materials science, synthesis, fabrication, functional devices, and sensor performance. Additionally, it addresses challenges and future opportunities for 2D p‐type semiconductor‐based wearable sensors. 2D materials have exceptional physical and chemical characteristics, which makes them attractive for wearable technology. These characteristics include high carrier mobility, outstanding mechanical performance, abundant chemistry, and excellent electrostatic tunability. However, due to the high electron doping effect of interfacial charge impurities and intrinsic defects, most reported 2D materials are n‐type. Complementary electronic devices and high‐performance wearable sensors necessitate the development of p‐type 2D semiconductors, which have superior electrocatalytic performance in oxidative processes compared to their n‐type counterparts. This review paper thoroughly accounts for recent advancements in 2D p‐type semiconductor‐based wearable sensors, covering basic understandings, synthesis and fabrication, functional devices, and sensor performance insights. Finally, challenges and future opportunities for 2D p‐type semiconductor‐based wearable sensors are discussed.

Abstract:The immense prospects of two-dimensional (2D) materials in the field of high-performance sensing stem from their unique layered structures and superior properties. Constructing heterostructures and refining sensor architectures are at the forefront of innovative research to enhance sensor performance. This review synthesizes the current literature, discussing the photovoltaic attributes, fabrication methods, analytical techniques and integration strategies pertinent to 2D materials. This comprehensive review of the operating principles of various sensors investigates the recent progress and deployment of these materials within diverse sensing devices, including chemical sensors, biosensors and optical sensors. Conclusively, this review serves as a valuable reference for understanding the applications and progress of 2D materials in high-performance sensors and explores their potential in interdisciplinary research.

Abstract:Abstract The development of a nation is deeply related to its energy consumption. 2D nanomaterials have become a spotlight for energy harvesting applications from the small-scale of low-power electronics to a large-scale for industry-level applications, such as self-powered sensor devices, environmental monitoring, and large-scale power generation. Scientists from around the world are working to utilize their engrossing properties to overcome the challenges in material selection and fabrication technologies for compact energy scavenging devices to replace batteries and traditional power sources. In this review, the variety of techniques for scavenging energies from sustainable sources such as solar, air, waste heat, and surrounding mechanical forces are discussed that exploit the fascinating properties of 2D nanomaterials. In addition, practical applications of these fabricated power generating devices and their performance as an alternative to conventional power supplies are discussed with the future pertinence to solve the energy problems in various fields and applications.

Abstract:Compared with bulk materials, atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) crystals possess a range of unique mechanical properties, including relatively high in-plane stiffness and large bending flexibility. The atomic 2D building blocks can be reassembled into precisely designed heterogeneous composite structures of various geometries with customized mechanical sensing behaviors. Due to their small specific density, high flexibility, and environmental adaptability, mechanical sensors based on 2D materials can conform to soft and curved surfaces, thus providing suitable solutions for functional applications in future wearable devices. In this review, we summarize the latest developments in mechanical sensors based on 2D materials from the perspective of function-oriented applications. First, typical mechanical sensing mechanisms are introduced. Second, we attempt to establish a correspondence between typical structure designs and the performance/multi-functions of the devices. Afterward, several particularly promising areas for potential applications are discussed, following which we present perspectives on current challenges and future opportunities.

Abstract:The development of wearable electronics is revolutionizing human health monitoring, intelligent robotics, and informatics. Yet the reliance on traditional batteries limits their wearability, user comfort, and continuous use. Energy harvesting technologies offer a promising power solution by converting ambient energy from the human body or surrounding environment into electrical power. Despite their potential, current studies often focus on individual modules under specific conditions, which limits practical applicability in diverse real-world environments. Here, this review highlights the recent progress, potential, and technological challenges in energy harvesting technology and accompanying technologies to construct a practical powering module, including power management and energy storage devices for wearable device developments. Also, this paper offers perspectives on designing next-generation wearable soft electronics that enhance quality of life and foster broader adoption in various aspects of daily life.

Abstract:The integration of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) and 2D nanomaterials brings about 2D-nanomaterial-based TENGs (2D-TENGs) that promote the rapid development of self-powered sensing systems and wearable electronics. Extraordinary physical, electronic, chemical, and optical properties of 2D nanomaterials endow 2D-TENGs with improved output performance. This review presents the state of the art of 2D-TENGs with respect to basic classifications, enhancement mechanisms, special advantages, output performances, and applications in energy harvesting and self-powered sensing. Furthermore, several challenges that can impede applications of 2D-TENGs are discussed.

Abstract:The progress was summarized in the flexible electronics empowered by the two‐dimensional materials, including electronic skins (for sweat and temperature sensors), gas sensors, touch pads, nanogenerators for mechanical energy collection, flexible supercapacitors and batteries, transistors and logic circuits, as well as memristors for neuromorphic computing. The readers may collect the stat‐of‐the‐art research on graphene and MXene based flexible electronics. Flexible electronics has emerged as a continuously growing field of study. Two‐dimensional (2D) materials often act as conductors and electrodes in electronic devices, holding significant promise in the design of high‐performance, flexible electronics. Numerous studies have focused on harnessing the potential of these materials for the development of such devices. However, to date, the incorporation of 2D materials in flexible electronics has rarely been summarized or reviewed. Consequently, there is an urgent need to develop comprehensive reviews for rapid updates on this evolving landscape. This review covers progress in complex material architectures based on 2D materials, including interfaces, heterostructures, and 2D/polymer composites. Additionally, it explores flexible and wearable energy storage and conversion, display and touch technologies, and biomedical applications, together with integrated design solutions. Although the pursuit of high‐performance and high‐sensitivity instruments remains a primary objective, the integrated design of flexible electronics with 2D materials also warrants consideration. By combining multiple functionalities into a singular device, augmented by machine learning and algorithms, we can potentially surpass the performance of existing wearable technologies. Finally, we briefly discuss the future trajectory of this burgeoning field. This review discusses the recent advancements in flexible sensors made from 2D materials and their applications in integrated architecture and device design.

Abstract:In this review, integrated self‐powered sensors based on 2D materials are introduced in detail. The applications of TENG/PENG self‐powered sensors based on 2D materials in different research fields are discussed. With the development of the Internet of Things (IoT), there is an increasing need for clean energy and large‐scale sensory systems. Triboelectric/piezoelectric nanogenerators (TENGs/PENGs), have attracted considerable attention as a new type of power generation terminal, which can harvest surrounding energy and convert it into electrical energy. To improve the output performance of nanogenerators (NGs) and diversify related applications, 2D materials with high carrier mobility and excellent piezoelectric properties can be directly used or integrated as different types of self‐powered sensors. In this review, the authors first introduce the excellent piezoelectric and optoelectronic properties of 2D materials, followed by the triboelectric series of 2D materials used in TENGs. The categories of integrated self‐powered sensors based on 2D materials are then summarized according to their different structures and compositions. We also discuss in detail the recent applications of integrated self‐powered sensors based on 2D materials from five aspects. Finally, the challenges and outlooks in the research field of self‐powered sensors are featured. Given the continuous development of self‐powered sensors based on 2D materials, they are considered to have significant potential for applications in biomedicine, environmental detection, human motion monitoring, energy harvesting, and smart wearable devices.

Abstract:As the development of smart electronics, self-powered sources have been attracting increasing attention.This review summarizes research progress of photovoltaic fibers and their integrated power sources with multi-stage energy conversion. Recent development of three dimensional photovoltaic fibers is glanced with special attention to structure design and materials of typical photovoltaic types(inorganic, organic,dye/quantum dot sensitized and perovskite solar cells). The application of carbon materials in fiber energy is focused as it is a hot topic recently. The hybrid energy systems based on fiber solar cells and fiber supercapacitors, fiber batteries and fiber nanogenerators are summarized together with hybrid energy textiles. This review provides a macroscopic view of novel energy fibers and will attract research interest in flexible/wearable fiber electronics and energy textiles.
