Abstract:Two-dimensional (2-D) materials of atomic thickness have attracted considerable interest due to their excellent electrical, optoelectronic, mechanical, and thermal properties, which make them attractive for electronic devices, sensors, and energy systems. Scavenging the otherwise wasted energy from the ambient environment into electrical power holds promise to address the emerging energy needs, in particular for the portable and wearable devices. The versatile properties of 2-D materials together with their atomically thin body create diverse possibilities for the conversion of ambient energy. The present review focuses on the recent key advances in emerging energy-harvesting devices based on monolayer 2-D materials through various mechanisms such as photovoltaic, thermoelectric, piezoelectric, triboelectric, and hydrovoltaic devices, as well as progress for harvesting the osmotic pressure and Wi-Fi wireless energy. The representative achievements regarding the monolayer heterostructures and hybrid devices are also discussed. Finally, we provide a discussion of the challenges and opportunities for 2-D monolayer material-based energy-harvesting devices in the development of self-powered electronics and wearable technologies.

Abstract:Flexible energy harvesters have become a research hotspot in both academia and industry because of their great advantages in powering wearable electronic devices. The flexible energy harvesters based on piezoelectric materials are recognized as a competitive method because of their sensitivity to mechanical deformation, excellent energy conversion performance, mature production technology, and simple structure. This paper presents a comprehensive review to illustrate the research progress and future development of wearable flexible piezoelectric harvesters. In this work, the widely used piezoelectric materials for flexible energy harvesters, including inorganic piezoelectric materials, organic piezoelectric materials, and piezoelectric composites, are first summarized. The research progress on the influence of ceramic content, morphology, distribution, surface chemical modification, and the addition of conductive materials on the properties of piezoelectric composites are systematically discussed. Additionally, this paper also presents novel structures and fabrication methods of flexible piezoelectric energy harvesters. Finally, future trends in research, development, and innovation of flexible piezoelectric energy harvesters are outlined and prospected.

Abstract:Wearable multifunctional devices (WMDs) based on human‐body energy harvesting are emerging quickly. This paper reviews different ways and mechanisms of energy harvesting based on the human body, and summarizes the different wearing forms and representative works. Finally, the existing challenges, possible improvements, and future directions of WMDs are discussed in depth. Wearable electronics with multi‐functionalities are widely utilized in various domains, including everyday living, healthcare, military training, and sports. Advances in flexible electronic technology, new materials, artificial intelligence technology, and sensor technology have accelerated the rapid development of smart wearable devices toward multifunctional and highly integrated trends. The energy supply technology based on the human‐body energy harvesting method endows wearable, multifunctional electronic devices with sustainable, renewable, and self‐powered characteristics, which proposes a solution strategy for the function expansion and energy supply of wearable devices. Herein, this paper discusses recent research on various methods of harvesting human body energy and wearing parts respectively, focusing on the new materials, structures, and processes involved in the representative studies, as well as the impact on energy harvesting and output, and functional applications. Furthermore, the challenges and obstacles faced in the creation of wearable multifunctional devices based on human self‐sufficiency and propose solution strategies to propel them in order to advance the creation of the next wave of intelligent wearable technology are also discussed.

Abstract:Flexible energy-harvesting materials can adapt to irregular topography and achieve self-supply of power, which has great potential for applications in wearable, surface interface engineering, digital healthcare, etc. MXene, as an emerging two-dimensional material, can be combined with various flexible materials and provide optimized action in energy harvesting. Moreover, the unique structural features of MXene also determine its special physicochemical properties, making it easy to endow MXene-based materials with multifunctional properties. This paper starts with the applications of MXene in different energy capture, including solar energy, thermal energy, mechanical energy and so on. The structure and fabrication process of MXene are also summarized. Afterwards, the realization scheme of MXene-based flexible materials are described in detail. Finally, perspectives of MXene based flexible energy harvesting, especially for wearable self-powered devices, are proposed.

Abstract:The development of wearable electronics is revolutionizing human health monitoring, intelligent robotics, and informatics. Yet the reliance on traditional batteries limits their wearability, user comfort, and continuous use. Energy harvesting technologies offer a promising power solution by converting ambient energy from the human body or surrounding environment into electrical power. Despite their potential, current studies often focus on individual modules under specific conditions, which limits practical applicability in diverse real-world environments. Here, this review highlights the recent progress, potential, and technological challenges in energy harvesting technology and accompanying technologies to construct a practical powering module, including power management and energy storage devices for wearable device developments. Also, this paper offers perspectives on designing next-generation wearable soft electronics that enhance quality of life and foster broader adoption in various aspects of daily life.

Abstract:With rapid development of wearable electronic technology, flexible thermoelectrics have become an important research topic in the field of wearable energy devices, owing to their sustainable power-supply ability, flexibility, and portability. However, the application of flexible thermoelectric devices in wearables is limited by their low stretchability, lack of breathability, and poor functional integration. Fiber-based stretchable thermoelectric devices with one-dimensional structure feature properties such as small size, lightweight, large deformation, and weavability, which make them suitable for integration into wearable fabrics. In addition, these devices can harvest thermal energy from human body. In this study, the materials, structures, and processing techniques developed for the fabrication of stretchable fiber thermoelectric devices are reviewed. Thereafter, their applications in self-powered sensing, energy harvesting, and thermoelectric cooling are discussed. Finally, a summary and an outlook are provided on the development of fiber thermoelectric devices wherein the key challenges of their practical applications are highlighted.

Abstract:In recent years, wearable sensor devices with exceptional portability and the ability to continuously monitor physiological signals in real time have played increasingly prominent roles in the fields of disease diagnosis and health management. This transformation has been largely facilitated by materials science and micro/nano-processing technologies. However, as this technology continues to evolve, the demand for multifunctionality and flexibility in wearable devices has become increasingly urgent, thereby highlighting the problem of stable and sustainable miniaturized power supplies. Here, we comprehensively review the current mainstream energy technologies for powering wearable sensors, including batteries, supercapacitors, solar cells, biofuel cells, thermoelectric generators, radio frequency energy harvesters, and kinetic energy harvesters, as well as hybrid power systems that integrate multiple energy conversion modes. In addition, we consider the energy conversion mechanisms, fundamental characteristics, and typical application cases of these energy sources across various fields. In particular, we focus on the crucial roles of different materials, such as nanomaterials and nano-processing techniques, for enhancing the performance of devices. Finally, the challenges that affect power supplies for wearable electronic products and their future developmental trends are discussed in order to provide valuable references and insights for researchers in related fields.

Abstract:The rapid development of advanced manufacturing technologies in micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) fields has promoted the advance in wearable electronics. Among them, wearable biomechanical micro-energy harvesters have attracted much attention in recent years to meet the unique power supply demands of wearable electronics serving as sustainable power sources. In the meanwhile, they also have been successfully demonstrated to be either self-powered sensors or other functional devices for wearable electronic applications. Herein, we overview the state-of-the-art of biomechanical micro-energy harvesters for wearable electronic applications, including the summary of working principles and structural configurations of biomechanical micro-energy harvesters. In detail, three promising technologies for biomechanical micro-energy harvesting are studied, i.e. electromagnetic effect, piezoelectric effect, and electrostatic effect. As for the structural configurations, two essential factors to affect the properties of biomechanical micro-energy harvesters are emphasized, i.e. new materials, and advanced manufacturing technologies. For wearable application scenarios, fiber/fabric-based materials and biodegradable/ecofriendly materials are investigated. For advanced manufacturing technologies, micro/nano fabrication technologies for precise fabrication and large-scale fabrication technologies for mass fabrication are summarized. Moreover, we review the wearable electronic applications of biomechanical micro-energy harvesters for powering, sensing, and actuating, respectively, which reveals the feasibility of constructing the smart wearable microsystems based on the abundant function of biomechanical micro-energy harvesters. Finally, we conclude the review and discussed the future development trends of biomechanical micro-energy harvesters for wearable electronic applications.

Abstract:Abstract The development of a nation is deeply related to its energy consumption. 2D nanomaterials have become a spotlight for energy harvesting applications from the small-scale of low-power electronics to a large-scale for industry-level applications, such as self-powered sensor devices, environmental monitoring, and large-scale power generation. Scientists from around the world are working to utilize their engrossing properties to overcome the challenges in material selection and fabrication technologies for compact energy scavenging devices to replace batteries and traditional power sources. In this review, the variety of techniques for scavenging energies from sustainable sources such as solar, air, waste heat, and surrounding mechanical forces are discussed that exploit the fascinating properties of 2D nanomaterials. In addition, practical applications of these fabricated power generating devices and their performance as an alternative to conventional power supplies are discussed with the future pertinence to solve the energy problems in various fields and applications.

Abstract:Wearable hybrid energy harvesters show enormous potential for supplying power to wearable electronics since they circumvent the issue of discontinuous source energy of single energy harvesters and thereby supply more available energy. The hybridization of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) and biofuel cells (BFCs) is promising; however, there are two major challenges. First, the two energy harvesters' outputs are severely mismatched, but optimized power management and design principles have not yet been demonstrated. Second, previously reported devices are based on planar structures and lack breathability. Here, we develop a breathable and woven hybrid energy harvester (BWHEH) that is knitted with a textile TENG and fiber BFCs. A power management circuit is specially designed to match and optimize the output direct current power supply, which can enlarge the output power by ~46.1 times, significantly lowering the effective internal impedance of the power source and improving the power delivery for common wearable loading conditions. The design principles of the power management for the TENG–BFC hybrid are thoroughly revealed. The wearable BWHEH self-charging power system can sustainably power various portable electronics by harvesting biomechanical and biochemical energy. This work provides a new route for energy harvesting and offers fundamental guidance for high-power hybrid energy harvesters. Data availability The authors do not have permission to share date.

Abstract:The ever-increasing demand for energy as a result of the growing interest in applications such as Internet of Things (IoT), and wearable systems etc. call for the development of self-sustained energy harvesting solutions. In this regard, the 2D materials have sparked an enormous interest recently, owing to their outstanding properties such as ultra-thin geometry, high electromechanical coupling, large surface area to volume ratio, tunable band gap, transparency and flexibility. This has unravelled noteworthy advancements in energy harvesters like triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), piezoelectric nanogenerator (PENG) and photovoltaics (PV) based on 2D materials. This review introduces the properties of different 2D materials including graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), MXenes, black phosphorous (BP), hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs). A detailed discussion of the recent developments in the 2D materials-based PENG, TENG and photovoltaic devices is included. The review also considers the performance enhancement mechanism and importance of 2D materials in energy harvesting. Finally, the challenges and future perspectives are laid out to present a future research direction for the further development and extension of 2D materials-based energy harvesters.
Wearable All-Fabric Hybrid Energy Harvester to Simultaneously Harvest Radiofrequency and Triboelectric Energy

Abstract:Distributed micro-energy harvesting devices offer the flexibility, sustainability, and multi-scenario applicability that will be critical to wearable electronic products in the Internet of Things. The radiofrequency and triboelectric (RF-TE) hybrid energy harvester (HEH) concept and prototype is presented for the first time, to simultaneously capture the energy from ambient electromagnetic waves and biological motions. The proposed hybrid energy harvesting system consists of a wearable rectenna, a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), and a power management circuit (PMC). Among them, the all-fabric rectenna exhibits good impedance matching characteristics in the ISM frequency. The flexible TENG unit can generate a maximum power density of 0.024 µW cm-2. The designed multifunctional fabric-based PMC can considerably enhance the controllability of harvested hybrid energy. Additionally, a normalizable fabric circuit board quasi surface mount technology (FCB-SMT) is proposed to integrate all modules on the same fabric substrate in one step, making the entire system superior mechanical robustness. The proposed wearable fabric-based RF-TE hybrid energy harvester is capable of successfully driving consumer electronics (such as sensors, watches, etc.). It provides a new energy solution strategy for self-powered wearable electronic devices and is anticipated to encourage the efficient utilization of renewable energy.

Abstract:Abstract Electronic textiles have gradually evolved into one of the most important mainstays of flexible electronics owing to their good wearability. However, textile multifunctionality is generally achieved by stacking functional modules, which is not conducive to wearability. Integrating these modules into a single fiber provides a better solution. In this work, a core‐spun functional fiber (CSF) constructed from hyper‐environmentally stable Zn‐based eutectogel as the core layer and polytetrafluoroethylene as the sheath is designed. The CSF achieves a synergistic output effect of piezoelectricity‐enhanced triboelectricity, as well as reliable hydrophobicity, and high mid‐infrared emissivity and visible light reflectivity. A monolayer functionalized integrated textile is woven from the CSF to enable effective energy (mechanical and droplet energy) harvesting and personal thermal management functions. Furthermore, scenarios for the energy supply, motion detection, and outdoor use of electronic fabrics for electronics applications are demonstrated, opening new avenues for the functional integration of electronic textiles. Abstract:With the rapid development of wearable electronic textiles, the study of flexible wearable energy storage devices has been pushed to the forefront. The discovery of two-dimensional (2D) MXene materials provides ideas and materials for the study of flexible wearable energy storage devices. Combining the excellent properties of MXene with a fiber/fabric can provide a good strategy for flexible energy storage equipment and other functional fibers and fabrics. This paper reviews the fabrication of MXene-based fibers/fabrics and their research progress as flexible supercapacitors (SCs). First, this paper discusses the preparation, properties, and development of 2D MXene materials. Then, five methods for manufacturing MXene-based fibers are summarized, and the fiber properties are analyzed, which is very important for the further application of MXene-based fibers. Furthermore, the assembly and performance analysis of MXene-based flexible fiber SCs, fabric SCs, and other types of SCs are reviewed. Finally, the potential, challenges, and future opportunities for the preparation of MXene-based fibers and flexible fiber/fabric SCs are discussed.
