Abstract:The determination of weight distribution of cyclic codes involves the evaluation of Gauss sums and exponential sums. Despite some cases where a neat expression is available, the computation is generally rather complicated. In this note, we determine the weight distribution of a class of reducible cyclic codes whose dual codes may have arbitrarily many zeros. This goal is achieved by building an unexpected connection between the corresponding exponential sums and the spectra of Hermitian forms graphs.

Abstract:Recently, there has been intensive research on the weight distributions of cyclic codes. In this paper, we compute the weight distributions of three classes of cyclic codes with Niho exponents. More specifically, we obtain two classes of binary three-weight and four-weight cyclic codes and a class of nonbinary four-weight cyclic codes. The weight distributions follow from the determination of value distributions of certain exponential sums. Several examples are presented to show that some of our codes are optimal and some have the best known parameters.

Abstract:Cyclic codes are an important class of linear codes, whose weight distribution have been extensively studied. So far, most of previous results obtained were for cyclic codes with no more than three zeros. Recently, \cite{Y-X-D12} constructed a class of cyclic codes with arbitrary number of zeros, and computed the weight distributions for several cases. In this paper, we determine the weight distribution for a new family of such codes. This is achieved by certain new methods, such as the theory of Jacobi sums over finite fields and subtle treatment of some complicated combinatorial identities.

Abstract:Linear codes have been an interesting subject of study for many years, as linear codes with few weights have applications in secrete sharing, authentication codes, association schemes, and strongly regular graphs. In this paper, a class of linear codes with a few weights over the finite field GF(p) are presented and their weight distributions are also determined, where p is an odd prime. Some of the linear codes obtained are optimal in the sense that they meet certain bounds on linear codes.

Abstract: Irreducible cyclic codes are one of the largest known classes of block codes which have been investigated for a long time. However, their weight distributions are known only for a few cases. In this paper, a class of irreducible cyclic codes are studied and their weight distributions are determined. Moreover, all codewords of some irreducible cyclic codes are obtained through programming in order to explain their distributions. The number of distinct nonzero weights in these codes dealt with in this paper varies among 1,2,3,6,8.

Abstract:Cyclic codes are a subclass of linear codes and have wide applications in consumer electronics, data storage systems, and communication systems due to their efficient encoding and decoding algorithms. Cyclic codes with many zeros and their dual codes have been a subject of study for many years. However, their weight distributions are known only for a very small number of cases. In general the calculation of the weight distribution of cyclic codes is heavily based on the evaluation of some exponential sums over finite fields. Very recently, Li, Hu, Feng and Ge studied a class of $p$-ary cyclic codes of length $p^{2m}-1$, where $p$ is a prime and $m$ is odd. They determined the weight distribution of this class of cyclic codes by establishing a connection between the involved exponential sums with the spectrum of Hermitian forms graphs. In this paper, this class of $p$-ary cyclic codes is generalized and the weight distribution of the generalized cyclic codes is settled for both even $m$ and odd $m$ alone with the idea of Li, Hu, Feng, and Ge. The weight distributions of two related families of cyclic codes are also determined.

On the Existence of Certain Optimal Self-Dual Codes with Lengths Between 74 and 116.

Abstract:The existence of optimal binary self-dual codes is a long-standing research problem. In this paper, we present some results concerning the decomposition of binary self-dual codes with a dihedral automorphism group D-2p, where p is a prime. These results are applied to construct new self-dual codes with length 78 or 116. We obtain 16 inequivalent self-dual [78, 39, 14] codes, four of which have new weight enumerators. We also show that there are at least 141 inequivalent self-dual [116, 58, 18] codes, most of which are new up to equivalence. Meanwhile, we give some restrictions on the weight enumerators of singly even self-dual codes. We use these restrictions to exclude some possible weight enumerators of self-dual codes with lengths 74, 76, 82, 98 and 100.

Abstract:In 1976, Helleseth conjectured that two binary m-sequences of length 2 m − 1 can not have a three-valued crosscorrelation function when m is a power of 2. We show that this conjecture is true when −1 is a correlation value. In other words, if ${{\mathcal{C}}_{1,k}}$ is the cyclic code of length 2 m − 1 with two zeros α, α k , where α is a primitive element of ${{\mathbb{F}}_{2^m}}$ and gcd(k, 2 m − 1) = 1, then its dual ${{\mathcal{C}}_{1,k}^{\perp}}$ can not have three weights when m is a power of 2.

Abstract:The high-density data storage technology aims to design high-capacity storage at a relatively low cost. In order to achieve this goal, symbol-pair codes were proposed by Cassuto and Blaum \cite{CB10,CB11} to handle channels that output pairs of overlapping symbols. Such a channel is called symbol-pair read channel, which introduce new concept called symbol-pair weight and minimum symbol-pair distance. In this paper, we consider the parameters of two classes of reducible cyclic codes under the symbol-pair metric. Based on the theory of cyclotomic numbers and Gaussian period over finite fields, we show the possible symbol-pair weights of these codes. Their minimum symbol-pair distances are twice the minimum Hamming distances under some conditions. Moreover, we obtain some three symbol-pair weight codes and determine their symbol-pair weight distribution. A class of MDS symbol-pair codes is also established. Among other results, we determine the values of some generalized cyclotomic numbers.

Abstract:A class of optimal three-weight cyclic codes over , with , achieving the Griesmer bound, was presented by Heng and Yue (IEEE Trans Inf Theory 62(8):4501–4513, 2016. https://doi.org/10.1109/TIT.2016.2550029). In this paper we study some of the subfield codes of this class of optimal cyclic codes when . The weight distributions of the subfield codes are settled. It turns out that some of these codes are optimal and others have the best known parameters. The duals of the subfield codes are also investigated and found to be almost optimal with respect to the sphere-packing bound. In addition, the covering structure for the studied subfield codes is determined. Some of these codes are found to have the important property that any nonzero codeword is minimal, which is a desirable property that is useful in the design of a secret sharing scheme based on a linear code. Moreover, a specific example of a secret sharing scheme based on one of these subfield codes is given. Finally, a class of optimal two-weight linear codes over , achieving the Griesmer bound, whose duals are almost optimal with respect to the sphere-packing bound is presented. Through a different approach, this class of optimal two-weight linear codes was reported very recently by Heng (IEEE Trans Inf Theory 69(2):978–994, 2023. https://doi.org/10.1109/TIT.2022.3203380). Furthermore, it is shown that these optimal codes can be used to construct strongly regular graphs.

Abstract:The average weight distribution of a regular low-density parity-check (LDPC) code ensemble over a finite field is thoroughly analyzed. In particular, a precise asymptotic approximation of the average weight distribution is derived for the small-weight case, and a series of fundamental qualitative properties of the asymptotic growth rate of the average weight distribution are proved. Based on this analysis, a general result, including all previous results as special cases, is established for the minimum distance of individual codes in a regular LDPC code ensemble.

Abstract:Recently, linear codes with few weights have been constructed and extensively studied. In this paper, for an odd prime p, we determined the complete weight enumerator of two classes of p-ary linear codes constructed from defining set. Results show that the codes are at almost seven-weight linear codes and they may have applications in secret sharing schemes.

Moreover, we find a new class of p-ary bent functions. This paper extends the results in Feng and Luo (2008).
