Abstract:The generalized Hamming weights dr(C) of a linear code C are a natural generalization of the minimum Hamming distance d(C)[=d1(C)] and have become an important research object in coding theory since Wei's originary work in 1991. In this paper, two general formulas on d(C) for irreducible cyclic codes are presented using Gauss sums and the weight hierarchy {d1(C), d2(C), ... , dk(C)} (k= dim C) is completely determined for several cases.

Abstract:The determination of weight distribution of cyclic codes involves the evaluation of Gauss sums and exponential sums. Despite some cases where a neat expression is available, the computation is generally rather complicated. In this note, we determine the weight distribution of a class of reducible cyclic codes whose dual codes may have arbitrarily many zeros. This goal is achieved by building an unexpected connection between the corresponding exponential sums and the spectra of Hermitian forms graphs.

Abstract:Recently, there has been intensive research on the weight distributions of cyclic codes. In this paper, we compute the weight distributions of three classes of cyclic codes with Niho exponents. More specifically, we obtain two classes of binary three-weight and four-weight cyclic codes and a class of nonbinary four-weight cyclic codes. The weight distributions follow from the determination of value distributions of certain exponential sums. Several examples are presented to show that some of our codes are optimal and some have the best known parameters.

However, their weight distributions are known only for a few cases. In this paper, a class of irreducible cyclic codes are studied and their weight distributions are determined. Moreover, all codewords of some irreducible cyclic codes are obtained through programming in order to explain their distributions. The number of distinct nonzero weights in these codes dealt with in this paper varies among 1,2,3,6,8.

Abstract:Cyclic codes are an important class of linear codes, whose weight distribution have been extensively studied. So far, most of previous results obtained were for cyclic codes with no more than three zeros. Recently, \cite{Y-X-D12} constructed a class of cyclic codes with arbitrary number of zeros, and computed the weight distributions for several cases. In this paper, we determine the weight distribution for a new family of such codes. This is achieved by certain new methods, such as the theory of Jacobi sums over finite fields and subtle treatment of some complicated combinatorial identities.

Abstract:Cyclic codes are a subclass of linear codes and have wide applications in consumer electronics, data storage systems, and communication systems due to their efficient encoding and decoding algorithms. Cyclic codes with many zeros and their dual codes have been a subject of study for many years. However, their weight distributions are known only for a very small number of cases. In general the calculation of the weight distribution of cyclic codes is heavily based on the evaluation of some exponential sums over finite fields. Very recently, Li, Hu, Feng and Ge studied a class of $p$-ary cyclic codes of length $p^{2m}-1$, where $p$ is a prime and $m$ is odd. They determined the weight distribution of this class of cyclic codes by establishing a connection between the involved exponential sums with the spectrum of Hermitian forms graphs. In this paper, this class of $p$-ary cyclic codes is generalized and the weight distribution of the generalized cyclic codes is settled for both even $m$ and odd $m$ alone with the idea of Li, Hu, Feng, and Ge. The weight distributions of two related families of cyclic codes are also determined.

Finite Fields and Their Applications

Abstract:Relative generalized Hamming weights (RGHWs) of a linear code with respect to a linear subcode determine the security of the linear ramp secret sharing scheme based on the linear codes. They can be used to express the information leakage of the secret when some keepers of shares are corrupted. Cyclic codes are an interesting type of linear codes and have wide applications in communication and storage systems. In this paper, we investigate the RGHWs of cyclic codes of two nonzeros with respect to its irreducible cyclic subcodes. We give two formulae for RGHWs of the cyclic codes. As applications of the formulae, explicit examples are computed. Moreover, RGHWs of cyclic codes in the examples are very large, comparing with the generalized Plotkin bound of RGHWs. So it guarantees very high security for the secret sharing scheme based on the dual codes.

Abstract:Recently, $b$-symbol codes are proposed to protect against $b$-symbol errors in $b$-symbol read channels. It is an interesting subject of study to consider the complete $b$-symbol weight distribution of cyclic codes since $b$-symbol metric is a generalization for Hamming metric. The complete $b$-symbol Hamming weight distribution of irreducible codes is known in only a few cases. In this paper, we give a complete $b$-symbol Hamming weight distribution of a class of irreducible codes with two nonzero $b$-symbol Hamming weights.

Abstract:The average weight distribution of a regular low-density parity-check (LDPC) code ensemble over a finite field is thoroughly analyzed. In particular, a precise asymptotic approximation of the average weight distribution is derived for the small-weight case, and a series of fundamental qualitative properties of the asymptotic growth rate of the average weight distribution are proved. Based on this analysis, a general result, including all previous results as special cases, is established for the minimum distance of individual codes in a regular LDPC code ensemble.

Abstract:Quasi-2-dimensional cyclic (Q2DC) codes over finite fields are important linear codes. They are asymptotically good, and have deep connection with convolutional codes. In this paper, using the trace representation and Gauss sums, we determine the Hamming weight distribution of Q2DC codes. As an application, we construct some classes of constant weight Q2DC codes achieving the Griesmer bound and some classes of two-weight, three-weight Q2DC codes. Moreover, by two-weight Q2DC codes, we obtain secret sharing schemes and association schemes under some special cases.

Abstract: The $b$-symbol read channel is motivated by the limitations of the reading process in high density data storage systems. The corresponding new metric is a generalization of the Hamming metric known as the $b$-symbol weight metric and has become an important object in coding theory. In this paper, the general $b$-symbol weight enumerator formula for irreducible cyclic codes is presented by using the Gaussian period and a new invariant $\#U(b,j,N_1)$. The related $b$-symbol weight hierarchies $\{d_1(\C),d_2(\C),\ldots,d_K(\C)\}$ ($K=\dim(\C)$) are given for some cases. The shortened codes which are optimal from some classes of irreducible cyclic codes are given, where the shorten set $\mathcal{T}$ is the complementary set of $b$-symbol support of some codeword with the minimal $b$-symbol weight.

Abstract:Studying the generalized Hamming weights of linear codes is a significant research area within coding theory, as it provides valuable structural information about the codes and plays a crucial role in determining their performance in various applications. However, determining the generalized Hamming weights of linear codes, particularly their weight hierarchy, is generally a challenging task. In this paper, we focus on investigating the generalized Hamming weights of three classes of linear codes over finite fields. These codes are constructed by different defining sets. By analysing the intersections between the definition sets and the duals of all $r$-dimensional subspaces, we get the inequalities on the sizes of these intersections. Then constructing subspaces that reach the upper bounds of these inequalities, we successfully determine the complete weight hierarchies of these codes.

Abstract:For a linear Hamming metric code of length n over a finite field, the number of distinct weights of its codewords is at most n. The codes achieving the equality in the above bound were called full weight spectrum codes. In this paper we will focus on the analogous class of codes within the framework of cyclic subspace codes. Cyclic subspace codes have garnered significant attention, particularly for their applications in random network coding to correct errors and erasures. We investigate one-orbit cyclic subspace codes that are full weight spectrum in this context. Utilizing number theoretical results and combinatorial arguments, we provide a complete classification of full weight spectrum one-orbit cyclic subspace codes.

Abstract:In 1997, Shor and Laflamme defined the weight enumerators for quantum error-correcting codes and derived a MacWilliams identity. We extend their work by introducing our double weight enumerators and complete weight enumerators for qubit codes and then investigate the MacWilliams identities for these enumerators. Based on the generalized MacWilliams identities, we solve an open problem, namely, the Singleton-type bound for asymmetric quantum codes (AQCs). Besides, the Hamming-type and the first linear-programming-type bounds for the AQCs are deduced similarly.
