Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic upended countless lives all over the world. Considerable research has shown that women’s career progression has been more negatively impacted by the pandemic than men’s, especially in the wake of school closures and increased childcare responsibilities. In order to understand more deeply the impact of the pandemic on women’s careers, a large mixed-method survey was conducted in Utah, a western state in the United States. This article reports on the responses of 2564 respondents to one of three open-ended questions taken from the overall survey, namely: “How has the pandemic impacted your career advancement experiences and opportunities over the short term and longer term?” The article frames the findings of this question by outlining workplace conditions and structures that contributed to women not advancing prior to the pandemic and applies the lenses of identity theory and systems psychodynamic theory to illustrate tendencies for workers and organizations to maintain the gendered dynamics that impede women’s career advancement. Findings included 59.1 percent of respondents who described a negative effect on their career advancement caused by the pandemic. Overarching themes and sub-themes were identified from these negative effects. Overarching themes included: (1) “Everything is on hold”; (2) “Lost or relinquished opportunity”; (3) “Reevaluation of Career”; and (4) “Experiences by Characteristics.” The latter theme highlighted unique experiences women faced versus men and manifested the gendered dynamics identified by identity and psychodynamic theories. Findings highlighted the importance of making workplace changes such as more flexible work and/or hybrid work arrangements, improved leave policies, the provision of childcare and other support services, and government policies that eliminate gendered barriers to women’s career advancement.

Abstract:COVID-19 and ensuing changes in mobility have altered employment relations for millions of people across the globe. Emerging evidence shows that women may be more severely affected by this change. The pandemic, however, may have an impact beyond the immediate restructuring of employment and shift gender-role attitudes within households as a result of changes in the division of household labor. We analyze a representative sample of respondents in the U.S., Germany, and Singapore and show that transitions to unemployment, reductions in working hours and transitions to working from home have been more frequent for women than for men – although not to the same extent across the three countries. We also demonstrate that among couples who had been employed at the start of the pandemic, men express more egalitarian gender-role attitudes if they became unemployed but their partners remained employed, while women express more traditional attitudes if they became unemployed and their partners remained employed. These results indicate that gender-role attitudes might adapt to the lived realities. The long-term consequences will depend on how both men and women experience further shifts in their employment relations as economies recover.

Abstract:The underlying causes of the relative economic downturn in all parts of the world since the outbreak of COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease 2019) deserve deeper scrutiny. This paper focuses on the employment situation of women during the above-mentioned period, including a comparison between the extent to which non-cyclical economic downturns have affected employment for both sexes and the impact of COVID-19 on macroeconomic policies by using qualitative research. This paper first judges COVID-19 to be fundamentally different from the downward economic phase of the traditional business cycle, and then it considers the opportunities and pressures on women's employment from a variety of factors, including supply and demand. The paper also discusses in detail the ways in which women were able to find employment during the epidemic, so as to provide an effective and reliable basis and reference for the formulation of national macroeconomic policies and the recovery of national production. It can be concluded that female employment is more significantly affected by the macro environment, and without formulating correct macro policies, it is impossible to bring about the recovery of female employment.

Abstract:There has been a dramatic change in everyday life due to COVID-19 around the world. The lockdowns, closure of schools and universities, and the loss of jobs has placed a lot of pressure on the family, particularly women. One of the main outcomes of the pandemic in Jordan has been the increase in the workload of women outside and inside the home. Despite the efforts made to empower women throughout the years, they continue to struggle and gender inequality remains overlooked and even normalized in Jordanian society. The aim of the study is to unfold the way Covid- 19 has disrupted women's lives and made gender equality less achievable, and explore the challenges they have faced in terms of the added paid and unpaid work they have been forced to do during the pandemic and to this end, in-depth interviews were carried out with 20 working mothers who were selected using purposive sampling. The study is largely informed by feminist standpoint theory whose main concern is the female voice and making it a valuable instrument in the process of knowledge production. The findings show that most women suffered from traditionally prescribed gender roles imposed by society, pressure and discrimination at work, and a lack of understanding and empathy at home and the workplace. Very few shared responsibilities with their husbands and their burdens with coworkers and employers, and an even smaller number was able to use the pandemic to their advantage and found ways to regain female power and self-assertion. The findings indicate that serious changes in policies need to be made to protect women's rights at work and in the domestic world, and the institution of marriage reconstructed within the Jordanian imaginary, and gender roles redefined.

Abstract:The first wave of the pandemic caused due to COVID-19 was marked by a complete lockdown in India in March 2020. This unprecedented time and global health crisis pushed everyone indoors and compelled all employees to work from home (WFH). This study is an attempt to explore the challenges and possibilities of the WFH scenario in the context of working women in India. Around 203 women professionals participated through Google form questionnaire from May–June 2020 to fathom the impact of lockdown while working in the WFH format. This study employs the 'the Standpoint theory' and the theory of 'Performative action' by Judith Butler to grasp the work-life balance and gender roles in family spaces. The results of the study have shown that although the spouses of these women are sharing some responsibilities of household and children, but still the main onus rests on women's shoulders. The identities attached with their working and non-working status have been fused with the arrival of paid work at home. The majority of the respondents reported that they have to give a big share of their time to household activities by compromising their work efficacy on the job.

Abstract:Women are playing a huge role in the fight against COVID-19, acting as home caregivers, community mobilizers, and frontline healthcare workers (ASHA). Women must be at the forefront of emergency response operations, social and economic recovery efforts, and attempts to improve our health systems after the pandemic if we are to truly bring health, wellbeing, and dignity for all. Additionally, it is important to maintain the strides gained in the area of sexual and reproductive health and rights as we work toward gender equality. In addition, women are currently dealing with a number of health, wealth, personal, and social issues as a result of this pandemic. The effects of any disaster, whether man-made or natural, including COVID-19, differ for men and women in middle-class houses where "working from home" is an option. Women are expected to take on endless household duties because domestic employees have been laid off and everyone is always at home. Physical separation, however, means little to the unemployed working matriculation woman, who must sell produce, fill water bottles at congested public faucets, or use public restrooms in order to survive.
The work–family balance of British working women during the COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract:Purpose The COVID-19 pandemic has affected women in unique gender-specific ways, particularly their traditional status as home managers. This study aims to draw on the role theory to examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on women's work–family balance during the lockdown. Design/methodology/approach The current COVID-19 pandemic, which has altered the ways in which we live and work, requires specific methodological tools to be understood. The authors, therefore, opted for an interpretive–constructivist and constructivist–phenomenologist approach. The dataset, thus, comprises of semi-structured interviews with 26 working women in the UK. Findings The findings illustrate how the COVID-19 lockdown has intensified British women's domestic workload and has, thus, caused unbridled role conflict, which has further been exacerbated by structural and interactional roles undertaken by women, especially during the lockdown. Remote working has contributed to women's role congestion and role conflict and poses severe challenges to role differentiation. Furthermore, we found that the lockdown has facilitated the rediscovery of family values and closeness, which is connected to the decline in juvenile delinquency and low crime rate that has resulted from the lockdown. Originality/value Through the lens of the role theory, this study concludes that the cohabitation of work and family duties within the domestic space undermines the ability to achieve work–family balance and role differentiation due to the occurrence of inter-role conflicts. This study enriches our understanding of the effect of remote working on female employees' work–family balance during the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.

At the time this article was edited, there were already more than 2.4 million confirmed cases of the corona virus (COVID-19) (World Health Organization, <span class="ref-lnk lazy-ref"><a href="#">2020</a></span>). Nearly every country across the globe is struggling to reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus and limit its health, societal, and economic consequences. The full impact on community, work, family, and its intersections is not yet clear. As the Editorial Board of Community, Work & Family, we share a deep concern for the potential impact of this global health pandemic. We similarly stand in awe to all the communities, workers, and families doing their utmost to combat it.

Abstract:The article focuses on the work of working-class women (WCW) amid turbulent times. Its timespan is just prior to and during the Covid-19 pandemic in the UK. The women's work, and the key skills involved, are fundamental to everyday lives, but both have been under-valued and under-rewarded. The pandemic shone a fresh light on the societal importance of this work and highlighted how its under-valuation and the women's systemic low pay and inferior working conditions have serious ramifications not only for individual workers and their families but for the provision of key services. The article centres WCW, at the intersection of classed and gendered disadvantage, to ask about inequalities in work experiences. Analysing nationally representative samples of thousands of workers in the UK prior to and as Covid-19 rolled out, we compare WCW with other workers. We show that the women faced both persistent and new inequalities at work: enduring low earnings, pandemic-led risks to jobs and paid hours, little opportunity to work from home or flexibly, and stressful key working roles. We reveal the heavily classed nature of some of these findings, show that others were more strongly gendered, while still others were classed and gendered outcomes that require intersectional analyses of the women's working lives.

Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic has posed different challenges to human kind in political, economic and social fields. One topic that should be addressed is the situation of women in labor market policies during the COVID-19 pandemic in Latin America. According to the International Labour Organization, the employment of women in the Americas decreased between 2019 and 2020 by 9.4 percent due to the effects of COVID-19- compared to 7.0 percent in the case of men- which represented the highest globally decline in all regions. This data has to be taken into consideration by public, private and social sectors to find optimal solutions to face this situation. Furthermore, a critical analysis should be made in order to identify the issues that have caused the problem and that may represent future risks. In this regard, the Critical Legal Feminist Theory may offer an interesting perspective of how the ideology, authorities and law should be reconsidered to explore new horizons for women in the society. Certainly, an inclusive dialogue is of core importance to understand how women are experiencing the labor market situation and policies, include their opinions and suggestions in labor law aimed at reinforcing women’s human rights, including the rights to health and work, as well as to include additional indicators to evaluate the results of labor policies.

Abstract:The unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic has a severe impact on societies, economies and labour markets. However, not all countries, socio-economic groups and sectors are equally affected. Part of this disparity can be related to the different role and extent of short-time work, which is now being used more widely than during the Great Recession. Furthermore, unemployment benefits have been made more generous in many countries. While it is still too early to assess the relative success of national strategies to cope with the pandemic and to revitalise the labour market as well as to evaluate the medium-term fiscal viability of different support measures, a few policy directions become apparent. These include the use of digital tools to increase resilience against economic shocks, the longer-term perspective of short-time workers in the current crisis, social protection for self-employed workers that is robust to economic crises and resilient models for school-to-work transitions of younger workers.

Abstract:The COVID‐19 pandemic has disproportionately endangered women's health, well‐being and safety. According to the World Health Organization, nearly 7 million people worldwide have died from the virus by May 2023. While COVID‐19 posed an immediate threat to the lives of people around the world, the interconnections of gender, race, ethnicity, and class resulted in differential consequences of the global pandemic. With a focus on intersecting identities, this special issue explores how women became more vulnerable during the pandemic and suggest what policies and interventions would work to buffer against such risks. In this issue, authors use empirical, review, and policy implication work to demonstrate how women, particularly those with other minoritized intersecting identities, were impacted by COVID‐19. The authors of this special issue examine the impacts of COVID‐19 on women's physical, emotional, and reproductive health, along with issues of safety. The unique role that women play in mothering and caretaking, within their homes, workplaces, and communities, means that this endangerment has widespread and potentially intergenerational impacts. Moreover, it is clear that empirically‐driven social policy and resource responses are crucial.

Abstract:<p>The impacts of crises are never gender-neutral, and the COVID-19 pandemic is no exception. Using a brand-new dataset covering 24 countries, we document that women-led businesses are subject to a higher likelihood of closure and a longer closure duration than men-led businesses during the pandemic. Women business leaders are also more pessimistic about the future than men business leaders. The disadvantages suffered by women-led businesses widen in high gender inequality economies and developing economies. Our results further indicate that finance and labor factors are likely to be the major contributors to these disadvantages. We suggest that COVID-19's policy response should not be gender-neutral.</p>

Abstract:Some people have forgotten the recent COVID‐19 pandemic, but for many, the memories are still vivid in terms of the effects of the health crisis on society. Globally, almost all parts of the world had significant changes made to their way of life due to the COVID‐19 pandemic, which included social and economic effects. Many countries closed their international borders for a long period of time, which had a profound influence on the degree of internationalization occurring within these regions. Owing to the need for social distancing, there were rapid changes to digital business practices and the resulting increased usage of online communication platforms. The aim of this editorial is to highlight how global entrepreneurship research and practice in the post‐COVID‐19 world have changed in terms of research and practitioner practices. This is important as we seek to progress society through positive interaction in the business environment. Suggestions for future managerial and academic practices regarding global entrepreneurship are stated.

Abstract:The premises of the feminist economist tradition from the Global South center their analysis in the wellbeing of people and the planet, under the human rights framework, gender equality and environmental integrity, as cross-cutting principles. The pandemic brought to the surface what the feminist movement has been saying all along, namely that the wellbeing of persons, and the planet they live in, depends on a complex web of elements beyond a limited notion of bodily health. The current capitalistic system has always kindled a tension between life and profits, a game that has undermined human rights of all persons by prioritizing the circulation of merchandises, goods and capitals. That struggle is more acutely felt now with the confinement measures imposed all around the world, and the ensuing impossibility for millions of people in precarious circumstances of respecting the lockdown measures. Women are even more carrying the burden of subsidizing entire economies. The feminist movement is now looking at solutions of solidarity at the crossroad between and within social movements, public policy, local and community resistance, while refusing to go back to a world where women may have to subsidize even more entire economies under recession.

Abstract:In the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Working Group on Equal Opportunities of the German Physical Society conducted a nonrepresentative, international online survey, investigating the impact of the pandemic and its consequences on daily life and work. Special attention was paid to the situation of female physicists in academia and industry. The responses provided evidence of both difficulties and opportunities arising from adapting to the rapid, significant changes. Discrepancies between different countries, jobs, and gender were found, particularly regarding concerns about professional work and private life conditions after the pandemic.

Abstract:The tsunami of change triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic has transformed society in a series of cascading crises. Unlike disasters that are more temporarily and spatially bounded, the pandemic has continued to expand across time and space for over a year, leaving an unusually broad range of second-order and third-order harms in its wake. Globally, the unusual conditions of the pandemic—unlike other crises—have impacted almost every facet of our lives. The pandemic has deepened existing inequalities and created new vulnerabilities related to social isolation, incarceration, involuntary exclusion from the labor market, diminished economic opportunity, life-and-death risk in the workplace, and a host of emergent digital, emotional, and economic divides. In tandem, many less advantaged individuals and groups have suffered disproportionate hardship related to the pandemic in the form of fear and anxiety, exposure to misinformation, and the effects of the politicization of the crisis. Many of these phenomena will have a long tail that we are only beginning to understand. Nonetheless, the research also offers evidence of resilience on several fronts including nimble organizational response, emergent communication practices, spontaneous solidarity, and the power of hope. While we do not know what the post COVID-19 world will look like, the scholarship here tells us that the virus has not exhausted society’s adaptive potential.

Abstract:The Problem Women must often overcome inequitable workplace policies and unsupportive family for career development. Although remote work allows women the freedom to manage both work and family domains, stigma rooted in gender-stereotypes dissuades women from utilizing remote work policies and working flexibly. The Solution Working from home during the pandemic, has led to some erosion of the stigma attached to remote work. Through the work/family border theory, we explore the new realities for employees working remotely and its positive impact on women’s career development. We argue, organizations can promote women’s careers by capitalizing on employee’s positive experiences with remote work during the pandemic, and support women’s career development even after the pandemic. The Stakeholders Stakeholders for this article include colleagues, supervisors, partners, and spouses, who have the power to influence women’s career development, as well as HRD professionals and organizational leaders who implement policies and practices supporting women’s career development.

Abstract:Even if the fatality rate has been twice higher for men than for women, the Covid-19 pandemic has affected women more than men, both as frontline workers and at home. The aim of our article was to analyze the differences observed in mental health and violence between men and women in the COVID outbreak. For this purpose, we have used all papers available in PubMed between January and July 2020 as well as data from non-governmental associations. We have thus successively analyzed the situation of pregnancy during the pandemic; the specific psychological and psychiatric risks faced by women both as patients and as workers in the health sector, the increased risk of violence against women at home and at workplace and, finally the risk run by children within their families. In conclusion, research on the subject of mental health issues during the Covid-19 pandemic is still scarce, especially in women. We hope that this pandemic will help to recognize the major role of women at home and at the workplace.
