Abstract:The disruptive biocultural force of the coronavirus highlights the value of more-than-human perspectives for examining the gendered effects and affects on our everyday lives and leisure practices. Pursuing this line of thought our article draws upon the insights of feminist new materialism as intellectual resource for considering what the coronavirus "does" as a gendered phenomenon. We turn to this body of feminist scholarship as it enables us to attune to what is happening, what remains unspoken and to pay attention to "the little things" that may be lost in a big crisis. Writing through the complexity of embodied affects (fear, loss, hope), we focus on the challenge to humanist notions of "agency" posed by these shifting timespace relations of home confinement, restricted movement and altered work-leisure routines. We explore the tensions arising from "home" as an historical site of gendered inequality and a new site of enhanced capacity.

Abstract:Gender norms, roles and relations differentially affect women, men, and non-binary individuals' vulnerability to disease. Outbreak response measures also have immediate and long-term gendered effects. However, gender-based analysis of outbreaks and responses is limited by lack of data and little integration of feminist analysis within global health scholarship. Recognising these barriers, this paper applies a gender matrix methodology, grounded in feminist political economy approaches, to evaluate the gendered effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and response in four case studies: China, Hong Kong, Canada, and the UK. Through a rapid scoping of documentation of the gendered effects of the outbreak, it applies the matrix framework to analyse findings, identifying common themes across the case studies: financial discrimination, crisis in care, and unequal risks and secondary effects. Results point to transnational structural conditions which put women on the front lines of the pandemic at work and at home while denying them health, economic and personal security – effects that are exacerbated where racism and other forms of discrimination intersect with gender inequities. Given that women and people living at the intersections of multiple inequities are made additionally vulnerable by pandemic responses, intersectional feminist responses should be prioritised at the beginning of any crises.

Abstract:The shared response to the COVID‐19 crisis demonstrates that the vast majority of society believes human well‐being ‐ not economic growth ‐ should be at the center of policy. COVID‐19 exposes the foundational role of care work, both paid and unpaid, to functioning societies and economies. Focusing on "production" instead of the sustainable reproduction of human life devalues care work and those who perform it. Women's physical and mental health, and the societies that rely on them, are at stake. When these policies are formulated, the field of feminist economics has valuable lessons for mitigating hardships as countries navigate the related economic fallout. A comprehensive response to the COVID‐19 crisis must recognize this gendered work as an integral part of the economic system that promotes human well‐being for all.

Abstract:Feminist political economy of health is a term that has emerged as a result of research that has combined and connected a feminist political economy lens with a focus on health disparities of women. This paper provides an overview of the literature from the work of feminist medical sociologists and feminist health scholars that have shaped the concept of feminist political economy of health. The analysis indicates that while women have experienced health inequities inside the healthcare system, there are also significant health disparities that are experienced outside the healthcare system due to women’s social, economic, political, and cultural conditions. Given that there are dual crises with respect to the COVID-19 pandemic as well as social movements pushing for change, further work that uses intersectional approaches is advocated.

Abstract:Abstract While economic inequalities have been a key focus of attention through the COVID 19 pandemic, gendered relations of power at every level have undermined health rights of women, girls and gender diverse individuals. Sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR) have always been sites of power contestations within families, societies, cultures, and politics; these struggles are exacerbated by economic, racial, religious, caste, citizenship status, and other social inequities, especially in times of crisis such as these. Policy responses to the COVID pandemic such as lockdown, quarantine, contact tracing and similar measures are premised on the existence of a social contract between the government and the people and among people, with the health sector playing a key role in preventive and curative care. We propose the use of an intersectional lens to explore the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the social contract, drawing on our field experiences from different continents particularly as related to SRHR. Along with documenting the ways in which the pandemic hinders access to services, we note that it is essential to interrogate state-society relations in the context of vulnerable and marginalized groups, in order to understand implications for SRHR. Intersectional analysis takes on greater importance now than in non-pandemic times as the state exercises more police or other powers and deploys myriad ways of ‘othering’. We conclude that an intersectional analysis should not limit itself to the cumulative disadvantages and injustices posed by the pandemic for specific social groups, but also examine the historical inequalities, structural drivers, and damaged social contract that underlie state-society relationships. At the same time, the pandemic has questioned the status quo and in doing so it has provided opportunities for disruption; for re-imagining a social contract that reaches across sectors, and builds community resilience and solidarities while upholding human rights and gender justice. This must find place in future organizing and advocacy around SRHR.

Abstract:Planetary health sees neoliberal capitalism as a key mediator of socioecological crises, a position that is echoed in much COVID-19 commentary. In this Personal View, I set out an economic theory that emphasises some of the ways in which neoliberal capitalism's conceptualisation of value has mediated responses to COVID-19. Using the intersection of ecological, feminist, and Marxist economics, I develop an analysis of neoliberal capitalism as a specific historical form of the economy. I identify the accumulation of exchange value as a central tendency of neoliberal capitalism and argue that this tendency creates barriers to the production of other forms of value. I then analyse the implications of this tendency in the context of responses to COVID-19. I argue that resources and labour flow to the production of exchange value, at the expense of production of other value forms. Consequently, the global capitalist economy has unprecedented productive capacity but uses little of this capacity to create the conditions that improve and maintain people's health. To be more resilient to coming crises, academics, policy makers, and activists should do theoretical work that enables global economies to recognise multiple forms of value and political work that embeds these theories in societal institutions.

Abstract:Women are playing a huge role in the fight against COVID-19, acting as home caregivers, community mobilizers, and frontline healthcare workers (ASHA). Women must be at the forefront of emergency response operations, social and economic recovery efforts, and attempts to improve our health systems after the pandemic if we are to truly bring health, wellbeing, and dignity for all. Additionally, it is important to maintain the strides gained in the area of sexual and reproductive health and rights as we work toward gender equality. In addition, women are currently dealing with a number of health, wealth, personal, and social issues as a result of this pandemic. The effects of any disaster, whether man-made or natural, including COVID-19, differ for men and women in middle-class houses where "working from home" is an option. Women are expected to take on endless household duties because domestic employees have been laid off and everyone is always at home. Physical separation, however, means little to the unemployed working matriculation woman, who must sell produce, fill water bottles at congested public faucets, or use public restrooms in order to survive.

Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic has posed different challenges to human kind in political, economic and social fields. One topic that should be addressed is the situation of women in labor market policies during the COVID-19 pandemic in Latin America. According to the International Labour Organization, the employment of women in the Americas decreased between 2019 and 2020 by 9.4 percent due to the effects of COVID-19- compared to 7.0 percent in the case of men- which represented the highest globally decline in all regions. This data has to be taken into consideration by public, private and social sectors to find optimal solutions to face this situation. Furthermore, a critical analysis should be made in order to identify the issues that have caused the problem and that may represent future risks. In this regard, the Critical Legal Feminist Theory may offer an interesting perspective of how the ideology, authorities and law should be reconsidered to explore new horizons for women in the society. Certainly, an inclusive dialogue is of core importance to understand how women are experiencing the labor market situation and policies, include their opinions and suggestions in labor law aimed at reinforcing women’s human rights, including the rights to health and work, as well as to include additional indicators to evaluate the results of labor policies.

Abstract:The COVID‐19 pandemic threatens both lives and livelihoods. To reduce the spread of the virus, governments have introduced crisis management interventions that include border closures, quarantines, strict social distancing, marshaling of essential workers and enforced homeworking. COVID‐19 measures are necessary to save the lives of some of the most vulnerable people within society, and yet in parallel they create a range of negative everyday effects for already marginalized people. Likely unintended consequences of the management of the COVID‐19 crisis include elevated risk for workers in low‐paid, precarious, and care‐based employment, over‐representation of minority ethnic groups in case numbers and fatalities, and gendered barriers to work. Drawing upon feminist ethics of care, I theorize a radical alternative to the normative assumptions of rationalist crisis management. Rationalist approaches to crisis management are typified by utilitarian logics, masculine and militaristic language, and the belief that crises follow linear processes of signal detection, preparation/prevention, containment, recovery, and learning. By privileging the quantifiable ‐ resources and measurable outcomes ‐ such approaches tend to omit considerations of pre‐existing structural disadvantage. This paper contributes a new theorization of crisis management that is grounded in feminist ethics to provide a care‐based concern for all crisis affected people.

Abstract:The COVID‐19 pandemic has disproportionately endangered women's health, well‐being and safety. According to the World Health Organization, nearly 7 million people worldwide have died from the virus by May 2023. While COVID‐19 posed an immediate threat to the lives of people around the world, the interconnections of gender, race, ethnicity, and class resulted in differential consequences of the global pandemic. With a focus on intersecting identities, this special issue explores how women became more vulnerable during the pandemic and suggest what policies and interventions would work to buffer against such risks. In this issue, authors use empirical, review, and policy implication work to demonstrate how women, particularly those with other minoritized intersecting identities, were impacted by COVID‐19. The authors of this special issue examine the impacts of COVID‐19 on women's physical, emotional, and reproductive health, along with issues of safety. The unique role that women play in mothering and caretaking, within their homes, workplaces, and communities, means that this endangerment has widespread and potentially intergenerational impacts. Moreover, it is clear that empirically‐driven social policy and resource responses are crucial.

Abstract:COVID-19 not only constitutes a serious public health problem and a global major threat to the poorest and most vulnerable social groups and neighborhoods of the world, creating a potential pandemic of inequality, but also poses an enormous challenge from the perspective of public health, ethics, economy, environment, and politics. However, many of the deep and complex systemic interrelationships created and developed by this pandemic are largely hidden, unknown, or neglected, both by the hegemonic media and by a highly specialized and fragmented academic world. However, when all the available knowledge is critically integrated, the origins and effects underlying this pandemic are likely to be found in the development of neoliberal capitalism and its inherent logic of ceaseless accumulation, economic growth, large inequalities, and ecological devastation. This commentary reflects on these issues, drawing out some of the most important lessons to be learned and challenges to be faced in the COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath, advocating for a radical social change to deal with these challenges.

Women in Medicine: The Limits of Individualism in Academic Medicine

Abstract:In the 21st century, more than ever before, issues facing women in medicine, such as pay equity and workplace harassment, are being explored and attended to by physicians and health care institutions. Discussions about women in medicine almost exclusively center around women physicians, even though most women in medicine are, in fact, not physicians. In addition, these discussions typically focus on gender, often failing to consider how race, class, and other dimensions of identity influence the experiences of women in medicine. In this article, the authors argue that neoliberal feminism is the dominant strand of feminism in the discourse of women in medicine. With its focus on the individual and a conception of success defined in largely economic terms, neoliberal feminism fails to consider the broader conditions in which women are situated and, therefore, limits structural criticism and the possibility for all women to engage in social justice. The authors suggest that the pandemic is an opportunity to pursue a more expansive vision of feminism in medicine. They propose intersectional feminism as a theoretical framework that can widen the understanding of what is possible: moving from individual actions resulting in incremental change to collective action that can transform systems. Intersectional feminism enables a push for structures, institutions, and practices that support all workers, including basic income, labor protections, public childcare, accessible health care, transportation justice, and migrant rights. In so doing, intersectional feminism calls for solidarity with and among women both within and outside of medicine.

Abstract:The present COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated conditions for continued survival, and community-based mutual aid networks have appeared seemingly organically to address such conditions. I argue these networks often fail to recognize capitalism’s mediation of caring labor, namely, the processes of survival and reproduction which are consistently undermined and demanded by capital’s accumulation. Instead, I propose a politics of care built on insights from the Black Panther Party’s and the Wages for Housework campaign’s respective responses to a lack of reproductive resources, which emphasize the position of survival struggles as a primary site of anti-capitalist political agitation and mobilization.

Abstract:This article argues that the pandemic-related growth of the gendered burden of care work in the Global North ought to be understood as symptomatic of the entangled contradictions between capitalist accumulation and social reproduction, on the one hand, and between value-production and wealth-creation, on the other. The article addresses whether social reproductive labor produces value. The article, moreover, shows that pandemic-induced lockdowns have extended crises of social reproduction to relatively privileged middle-class households in OECD countries and particularly the US. The article argues that efforts to improve the conditions of reproductive work must move beyond proposals for a more equitable distribution of care work and the expansion of care infrastructure.

Abstract:This article examines ways in which social movements have been impacted and responded in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Between March and May 2020, lockdown measures put a halt to mass protests for democracy, and the virus spread became the only political focus and news headline. Far from disappearing, social movements have adapted to unexpected circumstances and been particularly active during this challenging period. The first section of the article provides an overview of grassroots movements initiatives to complete five roles. The second section focuses on the struggle over the meaning of the crisis. While progressive intellectuals and movements consider the COVID-19 pandemic opened opportunities to build a fairer world, they compete with reactionary, capitalist and state actors to shape the meaning of the crisis and the world that may come out of it. The intensity of social justice movements' initiatives during the lockdown may show the outlines of a global wave of movements, embodied in countless decentralized reactions to a global event that affected has shaken billions of human lives.
