Abstract:Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between international expansion and firm performance in an emerging market. Design/methodology/approach - The paper firstly explores the relationship between internationalization and firm performance, then investigates the roles of diversification, and examines how diversification moderates the relationship between internationalization and firm performance. For this purpose, panel data on 318 Chinese listed manufacturing firms during the period 1999-2008 were utilized. Three groups of samples of high, medium and low levels of diversified manufacturing firms were obtained. Statistical techniques of fixed-effects panel data model yielded an interesting pattern of findings. On the basis of these results, the paper then discusses the implications for the international expansion of Chinese firms. Findings - At high and low levels of internationalization, internationalization is negatively associated with firm performance, but at medium levels of internationalization, greater internationalization is accompanied by higher performance. Product diversification negatively moderates the relationship between internationalization and performance. As product diversification increases, the relationship between internationalization and performance changes from a horizontal S-curve in firms with low levels of diversification to a U-curve in moderately diversified firms and eventually to an equilibrium level in highly diversified firms. The initial stage of the horizontal S-curve of internationalization and performance declines markedly in Chinese manufacturing firms as a whole, therefore it is by no means easy for Chinese firms to undertake internationalization. Research limitations/implications - These findings do suggest that managers need to take a long-term view of internationalization and make a commitment to internationalization. Originality/value - This is the first paper of its kind to empirically validate the relationship between internationalization, firm performance and diversification in China. It is intended to make a contribution to theoretical research on international business in an emerging market.

Abstract:With advent of economic globalization, internationalization has become one of the most important strategies for firms to achieve sustainable growth. Based on the empirical research in the Yangtze River Delta region in China, the method of Correspondence Analysis was employed to study the motivations for going internationalization of Chinese enterprises. The main findings include: (1) the motivations for internationalization of enterprises depend on their scale, and largesized enterprises are mainly motivated by the purpose of creating global brands and enhancing domestic reputation; (2) the ownership of enterprises has obvious influence on their motivations for going internationalization, and (3) enterprises in different industries also show different levels of motivation for internationalization.

Abstract:Based on 16 in-depth case studies this paper argues that the internationalisation behaviour of indigenous Chinese private-owned firms can only be partially explained by the Uppsala model and the theory of international new ventures. Instead, the so-called “bounded entrepreneurship” may be the key influence on the unique internationalisation patterns and competitive positions of these firms. Managerial and policy implications and limitations of the study are discussed.

Abstract:Drawing on institutional theory, we argue that the likelihood of a Chinese firm adopting an isomorphic strategy in outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) depends on the influence of external isomorphic pressures—specifically, domestic regional and domestic industrial isomorphic pressures—and the firm’s internal legitimacy-seeking motivation. Quantitative analysis of a sample of 107 Chinese listed firms and their OFDI projects in the 2008–2012 period offers supportive evidence for our arguments. Our study offers further insights into Chinese MNEs by providing a better understanding of the impact of China’s regional and industrial diversity on their OFDI.

Abstract:The extant literature offers inconsistent predictions and conflicting evidence regarding the relationship between state ownership and the internationalization of emerging market firms (EMFs). Drawing on institutional theory, we examine the moderating roles of political and economic institutions at the subnational and national levels in the link between state ownership and EMFs’ outward foreign direct investment (OFDI). Based on a sample of 1421 OFDI projects involving 286 Chinese listed firms in 115 host countries between 2003 and 2016, we find that state ownership can scale up OFDI when Chinese firms are headquartered in subnational regions with high institutional development or low economic development, or when political relationships between home and host countries are amicable or market growth in a host country is slow; otherwise, state ownership hinders OFDI. These findings offer new insights into the relationship between state ownership and the internationalization of EMFs.

Abstract:This study presents a dual strategic intent perspective, elucidating that international venturing by emerging economy private firms is prompted by exploiting firm-specific advantages, as well as circumventing market imperfection residuals embedded in home country economic transformation.Our analysis of 1,355 Chinese private enterprises shows that their ownership-specific advantages in areas such as corporate governance, inherited advantage from mergers and acquisitions of state-owned companies, and inward internationalization increase the level of outward internationalization. Market imperfection residuals, such as industry structure uncertainty, also propel the inclination for internationalization.Two types of international experiences, one possessed by entrepreneurs and the other by private firms they lead, are positively associated with the proclivity for international venturing. Their moderating effect on the link between some ownership-specific advantages and venturing is negative, suggesting a substitutive role of experience in interacting with ownership-specific advantages with the process of internationalization.

Abstract:<p>This study advances the limited generalizability of previous studies that have focused on developed market multinational enterprises and explores the link between institutional distance and ownership choice of emerging market multinational enterprises (EMNEs). Such studies in the EMNE context have been rare, and we provide key theoretical explanations for EMNEs' distinct foreign direct investment motives to act as important contingencies in the link between institutional distance and EMNEs' ownership choices. Analyses of longitudinal data of Chinese firms' internationalization from 2001 to 2017 reveal that the higher the institutional distance, the lower the level of EMNE subsidiary ownership control with market‐seeking motives; while the higher the institutional distance, the higher the level of EMNE subsidiary ownership control with knowledge‐seeking motives.</p>

Abstract:The paper first investigates how Chinese small-to-medium enterprises’ (SMEs) network ties at home moderate the relationships between different international entrepreneurship (IE) characteristics and the degree of internationalization of the firm. The paper further explores how the Chinese SMEs’ ownership arrangement might explain the boundary conditions of the proposed moderating effects of network ties on the relationship between IE characteristics and internationalization. Findings of our empirical study generally support the hypotheses derived from our theoretical framework. The paper offers new insights into the internationalization of Chinese SMEs by ascertaining the differential contingent value of business versus political ties in the relationship between IE characteristics and internationalization and explores the bounds of our findings in terms of the ownership arrangement unique to the Chinese context.

Abstract:This research examines the factors determining whether or not exporting firms expand to outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) as part of their internationalisation strategy, using a recent survey of Chinese private-owned enterprises. We carry out a multi-dimensional analysis to investigate the impact of firm productivity, internal resources and the external environment on OFDI decisions, including both the decision to undertake OFDI and the volume of OFDI flows. It is found that productivity, technology-based capability, export experience, industry entry barriers, subnational institutions and intermediary institutional support affect firms’ OFDI decisions. The findings have important policy and managerial implications.

Abstract:This article combines arguments from entrepreneurship literature and social capital theory to examine the antecedents to the internationalization of small and medium- sized enterprises (SMEs) from China. Our quantitative study of 117 Chinese SMEs demonstrates the overall importance of entrepreneurial orientation and social capital of entrepreneurs in facilitating their internationalization efforts, and also reveals that different dimensions of entrepreneurial orientation and different types of social capital exert different levels of independent influence on Chinese SMEs' internationalization. Complementary data from multiple case studies explains the variation between our quantitative findings and the findings of previous research. By highlighting the value of the entrepreneurial attributes of Chinese SMEs and the social capital embedded in their networks in the pursuit of their internationalization, the article adds to the scant literature on the internationalization behavior of the rapidly emerging Chinese SMEs. Abstract:How do Chinese firms make their entry-mode decision for their outward investments? Based on the three theoretical perspectives that balance the "strategy tripod," our study conducted empirical tests using survey data collected from outward-investing Chinese firms. We found that the cost advantage of the investing firm and learning opportunities in the host industry have positive effects on the likelihood of a Chinese firm opting for wholly owned subsidiary against joint-venture entry mode, while the market attractiveness of the host industry, host-country restrictions, cultural barriers, and cognitive pressures have negative effects. Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between financial development and internationalization of Chinese firms, whether the above relationship could be varied for firms with different kinds of ownership, and the channels through which financial development affects internationalization.,This paper uses a sample of 2,053 firms for the period 2001 to 2013, and applies the methods of ordered logit, logit, and OLS regressions to examine the role of financial development on firms’ internationalization.,The results show that financial development accelerates the level of international process of Chinese firms, and this effect is stronger for the non-state-owned enterprises (NSOEs) than for SOEs. The authors also document that financial development increases the investment scale of outward foreign direct investment (OFDI). In addition, the evidence on the channels through which financial development affects internationalization indicates that financial development accelerates the level of international process in high-technology industries and industries that are more dependent on external financing, and promotes the technology-seeking OFDI, and these effects are more prominent for NSOEs than for SOEs.,First, this study examines Chinese firms’ internationalization from the perspective of financial development and focuses on the relationship between financial development and internationalization, and varies this relationship over firms with different kinds of ownership. Second, this study adds to the existing literature by identifying two channels through which financial development has an impact on internationalization, namely, external finance and high-tech intensiveness, and identifies the impact of financial development on technology-seeking OFDI.

Abstract:This paper aims to explore the corresponding correlation between the internationalization and performance of firms using an empirical study of the manufacturing enterprises in China. First, based upon the concepts derived from literature reviews, three hypotheses have been developed that relate the exporting activity, the mode of foreign direct investment (FDI) and the relative use of the entry modes to the performance of firms ROA, confined to those which have internationalized their manufacturing activities. Then, using a sample of 569 Chinese manufacturing enterprises to test these hypotheses, evidence consistent with previous studies has been found that there is a significant corresponding correlation between the export intensity and the performance of a firm. It is also found that the difference in influences of different FDI modes on the performance of firms is found not significant Finally, it is found that for each entry mode, return on assets (ROA) of firms has all partially improved, but there is no significant difference in the influence of international modes on the performance of firms. © Vilnius University, 2002-2010.
Outward internationalization of private enterprises in China: The effect of competitive advantages and disadvantages compared to home market rivals

Abstract:This study uses the resource-based view of a firm to examine the outward internationalization of private firms in China. We investigate the extent to which advantages/disadvantages of resource endowment and organizing capability of Chinese private enterprises (relative to both state-owned enterprises and foreign-invested enterprises at home) may drive outward internationalization and affect their risk-taking tendency when going international. Our analyses of 553 Chinese private enterprises show that a Chinese private firm's likelihood of venturing abroad is associated with resource endowment advantages vis-à-vis foreign-invested enterprises, organizing capability advantages vis-à-vis state-owned enterprises, and organizing capability disadvantages vis-à-vis foreign-invested enterprises. These same advantages (or disadvantages) in organizing capabilities also increase a firm's likelihood of choosing a high-risk entry mode. We also find that a firm's resource endowment and organizing capabilities interact with each other and mutually enhance each other's effect on the likelihood of outward internationalization.
International Experience and FDI Location Choices of Chinese Firms: the Moderating Effects of Home Country Government Support and Host Country Institutions

Abstract:We examine the extent to which Chinese government support of foreign direct investment (FDI) projects and host country institutional environments interact with prior entry experience by Chinese firms, and how this interrelationship affects FDI undertaken by Chinese firms. We hypothesize that home country government support and well-established host country institutions enhance organizational capabilities to take risks in FDI. As such, they reduce the need to accumulate experiential knowledge and capabilities relating to entering host countries based on prior entry experience in a particular country when undertaking follow-up investment projects. Using a unique, hand-collected panel data set of Chinese publicly listed firms during 2002–2009, we find that home government support and well-developed host country institutions reduce the importance of prior entry experience and significantly increase the likelihood of FDI entry into a host country. Further, from our subsample analyses we identify differences between entering developed and developing host countries in terms of the impact of home country government support and quality of host country institutions. Our findings help explain the puzzle concerning why emerging economy firms have rapidly internationalized in a short period of time and do not follow the pattern predicted by classical IB theories.
Internationalization for Green Technology Innovation: Lessons from Emerging Market Firms in China

Abstract:Internationalization is a critical strategy for emerging market firms (EMFs) to expand limited domestic knowledge and support developing green technology innovation (GTI) that requires complex, interdisciplinary, and multi-purpose knowledge. Internationalization involves experiential learning and resource commitment sub-processes that allow EMFs to gain learning opportunities, internalize advanced green knowledge, and stimulate GTI. The two sub-processes, which are generally synergetic, may become antagonistic for under-resourced EMFs, potentially restricting resources originally allocated to green R&D. Also, different types of internationalization providing diverse green knowledge for GTI and requiring varying levels of resource commitment might affect differently. This study hypothesizes an inverted U-shaped effect of EMFs’ internationalization on their GTI. An analysis of Chinese-listed manufacturing firms confirms the presence of the inverted U-shaped effects of three types of internationalization (i.e., exporting, cross-listing, cross-border M&A) on EMFs’ GTI; cross-listing is more impactful on GTI than exporting and cross-border M&A.
The impact of formal and informal institutional distances on the strategic asset seeking motives of Chinese multinational enterprises: An analysis of patent and trademark acquisitions

Abstract:This study was to examine the influence of specific contributory variables within formal versus informal institutional distances on the sub-motives of emerging-market multinational enterprises' (EMNEs) strategic-asset seeking (SAS), in order to gain insights into the behaviours and motivations of increasing outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) from emerging economies like China. From a multinomial logistic regression analysis of both firm and macro-level data, it was found that private business groups (PBGs) were more likely to target and acquire firms with patents and trademarks. The findings also suggest that the informal cultural distance was significantly associated solely with the EMNEs' motive for seeking companies with trademarks but no patents. The association between formal institutional distance with EMNEs' SAS behaviours was not significant. The findings also revealed that certain sub-dimensions of formal and informal cross-national distance had significant effects on overseas specific SAS behaviours. These findings inform further exploration of determinants of EMNEs' SAS behaviours and provide a more comprehensive understanding of EMNEs' internationalization trends. This research contributes to the current literature on EMNEs and provides practical and managerial implications for EMNE decision-makers while investing abroad.

Abstract:In this paper, an empirical study is conducted to explore the paths of internationalization for Chinese manufacturing firms. Correspondence analysis was employed to examine the relationship between the internationalization paths and the firms’ form of ownership. It reveals that the internationalization paths of Chinese firms appear to be in a form of terrace structure, more firms adopting the rudimentary levels than the more matured courses of internalization. The findings indicate that Chinese firms are characterized by the relatively low levels of internationalization. Also the preferred destinations of going internationalization were identified for firms adopting outward foreign direct investments.
