Abstract:In this article that summarized some papers submitted to the 21th IAEA Fusion Energy Conference, the recent most important advancements in inertial confinement fusion are reported. For the traditional central hot spot ignition scheme, National Ignition Campaign to establish the scientific basis for the first ignition demonstration in indirect-drive implosion on National Ignition Facility is defined. Key scientific and technological questions to scale up ignition demonstration are being experimentally verified on the OMEGA and the Z/ZR facility using D2 and DT cryogenic fuel targets. For the alternative ignition scheme-fast ignition, significant progress of target physics has been made in recent two years, the enhancement of the hot electron flux and the reduction of the divergent angle of the electron beam found in the cone target experiments highlight the latest meaningful findings. Nuclear Fusion

Abstract:Fusion ignition by inertial confinement requires compression and heating of the fusion fuel to temperatures in excess of 5 keV and densities exceeding hundreds of g/cc. In August 2021 this scientific milestone was surpassed at the National Ignition Facility (NIF), when the Lawson criterion for ignition was exceeded generating 1.37MJ of fusion energy from a target driven by 1.9MJ of laser energy, and then in December 2022 target gain > 1 was realized with the production of 3.1MJ of fusion energy from a target driven by 2.0MJ of laser energy. On the NIF, ICF research primarily uses laser indirect drive in which the fusion capsule is surrounded by a high-Z enclosure ("Hohlraum") used to convert the directed laser energy into symmetric x-ray drive on the capsule. Precise measurements of the plasma conditions, x-rays, γ-rays and neutrons produced is key to understanding the pathway to higher performance. The paper discusses the diagnostics and measurement techniques developed to understand these experiments, focusing on three main topics: (1) key diagnostic developments for achieving igniting plasmas, (2) novel signatures related to thermonuclear burn and (3) advances to diagnostic capabilities in the igniting regime with a perspective toward developments for Inertial Fusion Energy (IFE).

Abstract:An indirect-drive inertial fusion experiment on the National Ignition Facility was driven using 2.05 MJ of laser light at a wavelength of 351 nm and produced 3.1±0.16 MJ of total fusion yield, producing a target gain G=1.5±0.1 exceeding unity for the first time in a laboratory experiment [ Phys. Rev. E 109 , 025204 (2024)]. Herein we describe the experimental evidence for the increased drive on the capsule using additional laser energy and control over known degradation mechanisms, which are critical to achieving high performance. Improved fuel compression relative to previous megajoule-yield experiments is observed. Abstract:In support of future radiation-effects testing, a combined environment source has been developed for the National Ignition Facility (NIF), utilizing both NIF's long-pulse beams, and the Advanced Radiographic Capability (ARC) short pulse lasers. First, ARC was used to illuminate a gold foil at high-intensity, generating a significant x-ray signal >1 MeV. This was followed by NIF 10 ns later to implode an exploding pusher target filled with fusionable gas for neutron generation. The neutron and x-ray bursts were incident onto a retrievable, close-standoff diagnostic snout. With separate control over both neutron and x-ray emission, the platform allows for tailored photon and neutron fluences and timing on a recoverable test sample. The platform exceeded its initial fluence goals, demonstrating a neutron fluence of 2.3 ×1013 n/cm2 and an x-ray dose of 7 krad.

Abstract:The National Ignition Facility (NIF) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory includes a precision laser system now capable of delivering 1.8 MJ at 500 TW of 0.35-mu m light to a target. NIF has been operational since March 2009. A variety of experiments have been completed in support of NIF's mission areas: national security, fundamental science, and inertial fusion energy. NIF capabilities and infrastructure are in place to support its missions with nearly 60 X-ray, optical, and nuclear diagnostic systems. A primary goal of the National Ignition Campaign (NIC) on the NIF was to implode a low-Z capsule filled with similar to 0.2 mg of deuterium-tritium (DT) fuel via laser indirect-drive inertial confinement fusion and demonstrate fusion ignition and propagating thermonuclear burn with a net energy gain of similar to 5-10 (fusion yield/input laser energy). This requires assembling the DT fuel into a dense shell of similar to 1000 g/cm(3) with an areal density (rho R) of similar to 1.5 g/cm(2), surrounding a lower density hot spot with a temperature of similar to 10 keV and a rho R similar to 0.3 g/cm(2), or approximately an a-particle range. Achieving these conditions demand precise control of laser and target parameters to allow a low adiabat, high convergence implosion with low ablator fuel mix. We have demonstrated implosion and compressed fuel conditions at similar to 80-90% for most point design values independently, but not at the same time. The nuclear yield is a factor of similar to 3-10x below the simulated values and a similar factor below the alpha dominated regime. This paper will discuss the experimental trends, the possible causes of the degraded performance (the off-set from the simulations), and the plan to understand and resolve the underlying physics issues. Abstract:Research on fusion fast ignition (FI) initiated by laser-driven ion beams has made substantial progress in the last years. Compared with electrons, FI based on a beam of quasi-monoenergetic ions has the advantage of a more localized energy deposition, and stiffer particle transport, bringing the required total beam energy close to the theoretical minimum. Due to short pulse laser drive, the ion beam can easily deliver the 200 TW power required to ignite the compressed D–T fuel. In integrated calculations we recently simulated ion-based FI targets with high fusion gain targets and a proof of principle experiment [1]. These simulations identify three key requirements for the success of ion-driven fast ignition (IFI): (1) the generation of a sufficiently high-energetic ion beam (≈400–500 MeV for C), with (2) less than 20% energy spread at (3) more than 10% conversion efficiency of laser to beam energy. Here we present for the first time new experimental results, demonstrating all three parameters in separate experiments. Using diamond nanotargets and ultrahigh contrast laser pulses we were able to demonstrate >500 MeV carbon ions, as well as carbon pulses with ΔE/E < 20%. The first measurements put the total conversion efficiency of laser light into high energy carbon ions on the order of 10%.

Abstract:In this work we present the design of the first controlled fusion laboratory experiment to reach target gain G>1 N221204 (5 December 2022) [ Phys. Rev. Lett. 132 , 065102 (2024)], performed at the National Ignition Facility, where the fusion energy produced (3.15 MJ) exceeded the amount of laser energy required to drive the target (2.05 MJ). Following the demonstration of ignition according to the Lawson criterion N210808, experiments were impacted by nonideal experimental fielding conditions, such as increased (known) target defects that seeded hydrodynamic instabilities or unintentional low-mode asymmetries from nonuniformities in the target or laser delivery, which led to reduced fusion yields less than 1 MJ. This Letter details design changes, including using an extended higher-energy laser pulse to drive a thicker high-density carbon (also known as diamond) capsule, that led to increased fusion energy output compared to N210808 as well as improved robustness for achieving high fusion energies (greater than 1 MJ) in the presence of significant low-mode asymmetries. For this design, the burnup fraction of the deuterium and tritium (DT) fuel was increased (approximately 4% fuel burnup and a target gain of approximately 1.5 compared to approximately 2% fuel burnup and target gain approximately 0.7 for N210808) as a result of increased total (DT plus capsule) areal density at maximum compression compared to N210808. Radiation-hydrodynamic simulations of this design predicted achieving target gain greater than 1 and also the magnitude of increase in fusion energy produced compared to N210808. The plasma conditions and hotspot power balance (fusion power produced vs input power and power losses) using these simulations are presented. Since the drafting of this manuscript, the results of this paper have been replicated and exceeded (N230729) in this design, together with a higher-quality diamond capsule, setting a new record of approximately 3.88MJ of fusion energy and fusion energy target gain of approximately 1.9. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevE.109.025204 ©2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:Irradiating a small capsule containing deuterium and tritium fuel directly with intense laser light causes it to implode, which creates a plasma hot enough to initiate fusion reactions between the fuel nuclei. Here we report on such laser direct-drive experiments and observe that the fusion reactions produce more energy than the amount of energy in the central so-called hot-spot plasma. This condition is identified as having a hot-spot fuel gain greater than unity. A hot-spot fuel gain of around four was previously accomplished at the National Ignition Facility in indirect-drive inertial confinement fusion experiments where the capsule is irradiated by X-rays. In that case, up to 1.9 MJ of laser energy was used, but in contrast, our experiments on the OMEGA laser system require as little as 28 kJ. As the hot-spot fuel gain is predicted to grow with laser energy and target size, our work establishes the direct-drive approach to inertial fusion as a promising path towards burning and ignited plasmas in the laboratory. Additionally, we report a record (direct-drive) fusion yield of 0.9 kJ on OMEGA, which we achieved with thin-ice deuterium–tritium liner targets.

Abstract:Fusion "scientific breakeven" (i.e., unity target gain Gtarget , total fusion energy out > laser energy input) has been achieved for the first time (here, Gtarget∼1.5 ). This Letter reports on the physics principles of the design changes that led to the first controlled fusion experiment, using laser indirect drive, on the National Ignition Facility to produce target gain greater than unity and exceeded the previously obtained conditions needed for ignition by the Lawson criterion. Key elements of the success came from reducing "coast time" (the time duration between the end of the laser pulse and implosion peak compression) and maximizing the internal energy delivered to the "hot spot" (the yield producing part of the fusion fuel). The link between coast time and maximally efficient conversion of kinetic energy into internal energy is explained. The energetics consequences of asymmetry and hydrodynamic-induced mixing were part of high-yield big radius implosion design experimental and design strategy. Herein, it is shown how asymmetry and mixing consolidate into one key relationship. It is shown that mixing distills into a kinetic energy cost similar to the impact of implosion asymmetry, shifting the threshold for ignition to higher implosion kinetic energy—a factor not normally included in most statements of the generalized Lawson criterion, but the key needed modifications clearly emerge. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.132.065103 Published by the American Physical Society under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. Abstract:It is vital that new clean and abundant sources of energy be developed for the sustainability of modern society. Nuclear fusion of the hydrogen isotopes deuterium and tritium, if successful, might make a major contribution toward satisfying this need. The U.S. has an important effort aimed at achieving practical inertial confinement fusion, ICF, which has been under development for decades at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The National Ignition Facility (NIF) is a giant laser to multiply-shock and thus quasi-isentropically compress a capsule of deuterium-tritium (DT) to high density and temperature, where the fusion rate is proportional to density squared times temperature to the fourth power. The principal problem that must be solved for NIF to work successfully is elimination of the Rayleigh-Tailor (R-T) instability that originates from the interface between the solid shell and the DT fuel within it. The R-T instability poisons the fusion reaction by reducing the temperature of the DT achieved by dynamic compression driven by the NIF laser. The primary technological problem today is one of Condensed Matter and Materials Physics (CMMP), rather than laser technology and plasma physics. The CMMP of the fuel capsule that must be done to minimize growth of the R-T instability is yet to be done. Based on what is known today, it is unlikely that NIF will produce practical amounts of fusion energy.

Abstract:For many decades, the running joke in fusion research has been that `fusion' is thirty years away and always will be. Yet, these past few years we find ourselves in a position where we can now talk about the milestones of burning plasmas, fusion ignition, and target energy gain greater than unity (scientific breakeven) in the past tense. Fusion is no longer a joke! Yet getting to fusion ignition, the tipping-point of thermonuclear instability resulting in an explosive increase in ion thermal temperature and fusion reaction-rate, and scientific breakeven (target gain, fusion yield/deposited laser energy , in the laser-driven inertial confinement fusion context) has not been easy. In this publication we discuss our present understanding of the physics and technological challenges surrounding ignition and Gain as well as highlight some outstanding problems that still need resolution.

Abstract:The National Ignition Facility(NIF) megajoule laser at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory(LLNL)\cite{moses} has produced a significant amount of useful physics results related to inertial confinement fusion since it began operating in 2010. However, achievement of its primary goal of generating ignition in a thermonuclear plasma has proven elusive, and measured yields were far below those expected from an ignited, and burning, plasma. The reason for the limited yields has not been explained in detail. This work proposes, and shows support for, the possibility that the low yields may be the result of ejecta from the interior of the target containment, and driving, shell.

First look at neutron emission shape characteristics of ignition hotspots at the National Ignition Facility (invited)

Abstract:The nuclear imaging system has been capturing neutron images of inertial confinement fusion (ICF) driven implosions for over a decade at the National Ignition Facility. This imaging system has evolved from one to three nearly orthogonal lines-of-sight, allowing for the study of three-dimensional shape characteristics of ignition shots. Limited-view tomography algorithms help visualize the burning hotspot in 3D and assess neutron source geometry using Legendre mode parameters. With its neutron, gamma-ray, and x-ray image reconstruction capabilities, NIS has provided critical insight into mechanisms that have limited implosion performance, such as fill tube diameter for ignition-type targets. This comprehensive diagnostic suite opens a window into the shape characteristics of ignition shots and how symmetry affects ICF implosion performance. In more recent ignition shots, neutron yields have visibly increased. Analyzing the shape and size of the reconstructed neutron source has shown an expansion of the burn volume, which is indicative of more efficient alpha heating during the implosion process.

Abstract:There has been some good news, and some bad news in the controlled fusion community recently. The good news is that the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has recently produced a burning plasma. It succeeded on several of its shots where ~1.5-2 megajoules from its laser (National Ignition Facility, or NIF) has generated ~ 1.3-3 megajoules of fusion products. The highest ratio of fusion energy to laser energy it achieved, defined as its Q, was 1.5 at the time of this writing. While LLNL is sponsored by nuclear stockpile stewardship, this author sees a likely path from their result to fusion for energy for the world, a path using a very different laser and a very different target configuration. The bad news is that the International Tokamak Experimental Reactor (ITER) has continued to stumble on more and more delays and cost overruns, as its capital cost has mushroomed from ~$5 billion to ~ $25B. This paper argues that the American fusion effort, for energy for the civilian economy, should switch its emphasis not only from magnetic fusion to inertial fusion but should also take much more seriously fusion breeding. Over the next few decades, the world might well be setting up more and more thermal nuclear reactors, and these might need fuel which only fusion breeders can supply. In other words, fusion should begin to color outside the lines.

Abstract:After the successful fusion ignition at National Ignition Facility, seeking for a high-gain fusion scheme becomes the next hot-spot in inertial confinement fusion community. Fast ignition provides an alternative due to its potential to reduce the energy of driven lasers and achieve higher target gain, whose core step is generating fast electron beam using picosecond lasers. The properties of the electron beam, such as energy spectra, determines the succeed heating process and the yield. In this study, with 2D particle-in-cell simulations, we find that the energy transfer ratio would significantly increase, and the energy spectra would be lifted up in the dual-color injecting scheme, where an extra weak low-frequency laser is injected with the main pulse. These phenomena are attributed to the longitudinal electric field modulation in low-density region and electromagnetically-induced-transparency process in the microchannels formed near the critical surface. Our results can be applied to fast ignition schemes and experimental designs of super-hot electron generation with different pulse durations. For example, in the DCI project with a fast ignition scheme, such a dual-color intense picosecond laser facility is under construction to control the fast electron generation and enhance the laser transparency.

Burn Propagation in Magnetized High-Yield Inertial Fusion

Abstract:Recent experiments at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) have demonstrated ignition for the first time in an inertial confinement fusion (ICF) experiment, a major milestone allowing the possibility of high energy gain through burn propagation. Use of external magnetic fields, applied primarily to reduce thermal losses, could increase hotspot temperature and ease requirements for ignition, opening up the capsule design space for high energy gain. However, this same restriction of thermal transport has the potential to inhibit burn propagation, which is vital in the attainment of high gain. In this work, radiation-magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) simulations carried out using the code Chimera are used to investigate the effect of a pre-imposed magnetic field on ignition and burn propagation. This paper studies the propagation of burn using both an idealized planar model and in fully-integrated 2D MHD simulations of an igniting NIF capsule. A study of magnetised burn propagation in the idealized planar model identifies three regimes of magnetized burn propagation: (1) thermal conduction driven; (2) alpha transport driven; and (3) fully suppressed burn. Simulations of NIF shot N210808 with an applied 40T axial field show clear indication of burn suppression perpendicular to field lines, with rapid burn observed along field lines. Implosion shape is altered by the field, and anisotropic conduction causes significant modification to the rate of ablation during stagnation. These results highlight the fundamental changes to implosion dynamics in high yield magnetized ICF and motivate further study to better optimize future magnetized target designs for high gain.

Abstract:A thin-glass-shell, D3He-filled exploding-pusher inertial confinement fusion implosion at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) has been demonstrated as a proton source that serves as a promising first step toward development of a monoenergetic proton, alpha, and triton backlighting platform at the NIF. Among the key measurements, the D3He-proton emission on this experiment (shot N121128) has been well-characterized spectrally, temporally, and in terms of emission isotropy, revealing a highly monoenergetic (ΔE/E∼4%) and isotropic source (~3% proton fluence variation and ~0.5% proton energy variation). On a similar shot (N130129, with D2 fill), the DD-proton spectrum has been obtained as well, illustrating that monoenergetic protons of multiple energies may be utilized in a single experiment. These results, and experiments on OMEGA, point toward future steps in the development of a precision, monoenergetic proton, alpha, and triton source that can readily be implemented at the NIF for backlighting a broad range of high energy density physics (HEDP) experiments in which fields and flows are manifest, and also utilized for studies of stopping power in warm dense matter and in classical plasmas.
