Abstract:The proton-boron (p 11 B) reaction is regarded as the holy grail of advanced fusion fuels, where the primary reaction produces 3 energetic α particles. However, due to the high nuclear bounding energy and bremsstrahlung energy losses, energy gain from the p 11 B fusion is hard to achieve in thermal fusion conditions. Owing to advances in intense laser technology, the p11 B fusion has drawn renewed attention by using an intense laser-accelerated proton beam to impact a boron-11 target. As one of the most influential works in this field, Labaune et al. first experimentally found that states of boron (solid or plasma) play an important role in the yield of α particles. This exciting experimental finding rouses an attempt to measure the nuclear fusion cross section in a plasma environment. However, up to now, there is still no quantitative explanation. Based on large-scale, fully kinetic computer simulations, the inner physical mechanism of yield increment is uncovered, and a quantitative explanation is given. Our results indicate the yield increment is attributed to the reduced energy loss of the protons under the synergetic influences of degeneracy effects and collective electromagnetic effects. Our work may serve as a reference for not only analyzing or improving further experiments of the p 11 B fusion but also investigating other beam-plasma systems, such as ion-driven inertial confinement fusions.

Abstract:Fusion "scientific breakeven" (i.e., unity target gain Gtarget , total fusion energy out > laser energy input) has been achieved for the first time (here, Gtarget∼1.5 ). This Letter reports on the physics principles of the design changes that led to the first controlled fusion experiment, using laser indirect drive, on the National Ignition Facility to produce target gain greater than unity and exceeded the previously obtained conditions needed for ignition by the Lawson criterion. Key elements of the success came from reducing "coast time" (the time duration between the end of the laser pulse and implosion peak compression) and maximizing the internal energy delivered to the "hot spot" (the yield producing part of the fusion fuel). The link between coast time and maximally efficient conversion of kinetic energy into internal energy is explained. The energetics consequences of asymmetry and hydrodynamic-induced mixing were part of high-yield big radius implosion design experimental and design strategy. Herein, it is shown how asymmetry and mixing consolidate into one key relationship. It is shown that mixing distills into a kinetic energy cost similar to the impact of implosion asymmetry, shifting the threshold for ignition to higher implosion kinetic energy—a factor not normally included in most statements of the generalized Lawson criterion, but the key needed modifications clearly emerge. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.132.065103 Published by the American Physical Society under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. Abstract:The advent of ultra-high power lasers allows laser power levels that are about 1000 times the power of all the power stations in the USA. This opens the way to new approaches for inertial confinement fusions (ICF) that in turn can drastically reduce the laser input energy needed to achieve practical ICF power. The specific approach discussed here involves inducing a fusion burn wave by laser-driven impact of a relatively large block of plasma on the outside of a solid density fusion target. This new method is specifically selected to enable the extremely attractive, but demanding, neutron-free proton–B-11 fusion that potentially can lead to the long sought goal of an ultra “clean” fusion power plant.

Abstract:Abstract Contemporarily, as a tool to address issue of energy shortage, controlled fusion has become a hot technology. Although there are ways to achieve controlled fusion, it is currently not efficient enough to produce electricity based on power plant. The topic of this paper is to introduce a method of controlled nuclear fusion derived from laser technology, inertial confinement fusion. This research analyzed from plenty of angles in terms of its development in recent years. Firstly, the article proposes the concept of fusion and inertial confinement fusion. The main contradiction is the usage of compression to achieve high ignition points. In fact, the goal of this paper is to try to reach this ignition point in various ways. After demonstrating the basic concept of the inertial confinement fusion, mathematical expression for ignition and the principle of laser, it is found that its efficiency can be increased in several ways, i.e., amplifying lasers, adding magnetic field, and shock ignition that changes the waveform. It’s still not up to production standards, but inertial confinement fusion does give a path to achieve the goal. These results shed light on guiding further exploration for ICF as well as predict the future development direction.
Amplifier scheme: driven by indirect-drive under 10 MJ laser toward inertial fusion energy

Abstract:Burn efficiency is a key for commercial feasibility of fusion power station for inertial fusion energy, while burn efficiency is usually lower than 30% in the central ignition scheme of inertial confinement fusion (ICF). A recent conceptual design for a 10 MJ laser driver [Z. Sui and K. Lan et al., Matter Radiat. Extremes 9, 043002 (2024)] provides a new room for target design to achieve a higher burn efficiency. Here, we take the advantage of fuel density in reaction rate and propose a novel amplifier scheme for increasing burn efficiency via two cascading explosions by ICF. The amplifier scheme can be realized either by indirect-drive or by direct-drive. Here, we give a 1D design for an indirect-driven amplifier capsule containing 2.02 mg DT fuel under a 300 eV radiation generated by a 10 MJ and 1785 TW laser inside an octahedral spherical hohlraum. As a result, the amplifier capsule has a burn efficiency of 48% and a gain of 33 at a convergence ratio of 24. This novel scheme can achieve a relatively high burn efficiency at a relatively low convergence ratio, which can greatly relax the stringent requirements of high gain fusion on hot spot ignition conditions and engineering issues.

Abstract:An approach for producing a large quantity of neutrons is proposed. It involves compression of a fuel foil and confinement of the resulting plasma between two intense laser pulses. It is shown that two circularly polarized laser pulses of amplitude a=7 illuminating a deuterium-tritium foil of areal density 3.3 X 10(18) cm(-2) can produce about 4.2 X 10(6) neutrons per joule of the input laser energy.

Abstract:An indirect-drive inertial fusion experiment on the National Ignition Facility was driven using 2.05 MJ of laser light at a wavelength of 351 nm and produced 3.1±0.16 MJ of total fusion yield, producing a target gain G=1.5±0.1 exceeding unity for the first time in a laboratory experiment [ Phys. Rev. E 109 , 025204 (2024)]. Herein we describe the experimental evidence for the increased drive on the capsule using additional laser energy and control over known degradation mechanisms, which are critical to achieving high performance. Improved fuel compression relative to previous megajoule-yield experiments is observed. Abstract:Direct-drive laser inertial fusion is a potential producer of baseline power that has increased credibility following the achievement at the National Ignition Facility of ignition and net gain using indirect-drive via laser-produced X-rays. Ultraviolet broad band lasers such as argon fluoride, at 193 nm and 10 THz, are predicted by hydrocode simulations to enable energy gains greater than 100 with laser energies less than 0.5 MJ, stimulating renewed reactor design effort in anticipation of experimental verification. The present study attempts to create a reactor design with very few unknowns in materials, corrosion, first wall viability, tritium breeding and ease of servicing. A new variant of magnetic intervention has an increased ion dump surface area combined with a simple structure. Around an inner vacuum vessel an all-ceramic tritium breeder blanket is possible in an unconstrained volume, allowing helium coolant to be used without excessive pressure or flow power. The case is made for development of a lead (Pb) ceramic as the neutron multiplier.

Abstract:Irradiating a small capsule containing deuterium and tritium fuel directly with intense laser light causes it to implode, which creates a plasma hot enough to initiate fusion reactions between the fuel nuclei. Here we report on such laser direct-drive experiments and observe that the fusion reactions produce more energy than the amount of energy in the central so-called hot-spot plasma. This condition is identified as having a hot-spot fuel gain greater than unity. A hot-spot fuel gain of around four was previously accomplished at the National Ignition Facility in indirect-drive inertial confinement fusion experiments where the capsule is irradiated by X-rays. In that case, up to 1.9 MJ of laser energy was used, but in contrast, our experiments on the OMEGA laser system require as little as 28 kJ. As the hot-spot fuel gain is predicted to grow with laser energy and target size, our work establishes the direct-drive approach to inertial fusion as a promising path towards burning and ignited plasmas in the laboratory. Additionally, we report a record (direct-drive) fusion yield of 0.9 kJ on OMEGA, which we achieved with thin-ice deuterium–tritium liner targets.

Abstract:The declared aim of Marvel Fusion is the realization of a reactor based on the aneutronic fusion of proton and boron-11 nuclei in the near future, making use of latest-day laser technology and nano-structured materials. The aim of the preprint quoted above is to demonstrate the feasibility of fusion energy gain from the irradiation of an initially uncompressed target consisting of an array of nano-wires, by a femto-second laser. This proposal is in apparent contrast to text-book wisdom, which postulates - even for the fast-ignitor concept, and a DT fuel mix - a target density about 1000 times that of solid state. The novel, optimistic predictions of Ruhl and Korn are based, however, not on rigorous estimates, but only on parametric dependencies, extrapolated far beyond their conventional limits of validity. The authors invoke the effects of self-arising magnetic fields to result in additional magnetic confinement, but we show their model to contain intrinsic contradictions. The conclusion from out note is that ultra-fast, high power lasers can be of use to inertial fusion energy production only, if the intrinsic time-scale for fusion reactions can be brought down to a level more commensurate with the Laser pulse length. Involving magnetic fields does not change this basic limitation, as the Alfvén time will be similar to the kinetic disintegration time. Given that the fusion energy gain as function of particle energy has a maximum (for DT at about 170 keV) overheating will not be helpful so that the required enhancement of the fusion reaction rate can only be achieved by strong pre-compression of the target.

Abstract:In this work we present the design of the first controlled fusion laboratory experiment to reach target gain G>1 N221204 (5 December 2022) [ Phys. Rev. Lett. 132 , 065102 (2024)], performed at the National Ignition Facility, where the fusion energy produced (3.15 MJ) exceeded the amount of laser energy required to drive the target (2.05 MJ). Following the demonstration of ignition according to the Lawson criterion N210808, experiments were impacted by nonideal experimental fielding conditions, such as increased (known) target defects that seeded hydrodynamic instabilities or unintentional low-mode asymmetries from nonuniformities in the target or laser delivery, which led to reduced fusion yields less than 1 MJ. This Letter details design changes, including using an extended higher-energy laser pulse to drive a thicker high-density carbon (also known as diamond) capsule, that led to increased fusion energy output compared to N210808 as well as improved robustness for achieving high fusion energies (greater than 1 MJ) in the presence of significant low-mode asymmetries. For this design, the burnup fraction of the deuterium and tritium (DT) fuel was increased (approximately 4% fuel burnup and a target gain of approximately 1.5 compared to approximately 2% fuel burnup and target gain approximately 0.7 for N210808) as a result of increased total (DT plus capsule) areal density at maximum compression compared to N210808. Radiation-hydrodynamic simulations of this design predicted achieving target gain greater than 1 and also the magnitude of increase in fusion energy produced compared to N210808. The plasma conditions and hotspot power balance (fusion power produced vs input power and power losses) using these simulations are presented. Since the drafting of this manuscript, the results of this paper have been replicated and exceeded (N230729) in this design, together with a higher-quality diamond capsule, setting a new record of approximately 3.88MJ of fusion energy and fusion energy target gain of approximately 1.9. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevE.109.025204 ©2024 American Physical Society

Nuclear Fusion

Abstract:A coordinated, focused effort is underway to develop Laser Inertial Fusion Energy. The key components are developed in concert with one another and the science and engineering issues are addressed concurrently. Recent advances include: target designs have been evaluated that show it could be possible to achieve the high gains (>100) needed for a practical fusion system.These designs feature a low-density CH foam that is wicked with solid DT and over-coated with a thin high-Z layer. These results have been verified with three independent one-dimensional codes, and are now being evaluated with two- and three-dimensional codes. Two types of lasers are under development: Krypton Fluoride (KrF) gas lasers and Diode Pumped Solid State Lasers (DPSSL). Both have recently achieved repetitive ‘first light’, and both have made progress in meeting the fusion energy requirements for durability, efficiency, and cost. This paper also presents the advances in development of chamber operating windows (target survival plus no wall erosion), final optics (aluminium at grazing incidence has high reflectivity and exceeds the required laser damage threshold), target fabrication (demonstration of smooth DT ice layers grown over foams, batch production of foam shells, and appropriate high-Z overcoats), and target injection (new facility for target injection and tracking studies).

Abstract:Abstract Theoretical–computational studies of table-top laser-driven nuclear fusion of high-energy (up to 15 MeV) deuterons with ${}^{7} \mathrm{Li} $ , ${}^{6} \mathrm{Li} $ , and D nuclei demonstrate the attainment of high fusion yields within a source–target reaction design. This constitutes a source of Coulomb-exploding deuterium nanodroplets driven by an ultraintense femtosecond near-infrared laser and a solid hollow cylindrical target containing the second element. The source–target reaction design attains the highest table-top fusion efficiencies (up to $4\times 1{0}^{9} ~{\mathrm{J} }^{- 1} $ per laser pulse) obtained to date. The highest conversion efficiency of laser energy to nuclear energy ( $1{0}^{- 2} $ – $1{0}^{- 3} )$ for table-top DD fusion attained in the source–target design is comparable to that for DT fusion currently accomplished for ‘big science’ inertial fusion setups.

Coulomb driven energy boost of heavy ions for laser plasma acceleration

Abstract:An unprecedented increase of kinetic energy of laser accelerated heavy ions is demonstrated. Ultra thin gold foils have been irradiated by an ultra short laser pulse at an intensity of $6\times 10^{19}$ W/cm$^{2}$. Highly charged gold ions with kinetic energies up to $> 200$ MeV and a bandwidth limited energy distribution have been reached by using $1.3$ Joule laser energy on target. $1$D and $2$D Particle in Cell simulations show how a spatial dependence on the ions ionization leads to an enhancement of the accelerating electrical field. Our theoretical model considers a varying charge density along the target normal and is capable of explaining the energy boost of highly charged ions, leading to a higher efficiency in laser acceleration of heavy ions.

Control of energy spectra and enhancement of energy conversion of fast electrons generated by dual-color picosecond lasers

Abstract:After the successful fusion ignition at National Ignition Facility, seeking for a high-gain fusion scheme becomes the next hot-spot in inertial confinement fusion community. Fast ignition provides an alternative due to its potential to reduce the energy of driven lasers and achieve higher target gain, whose core step is generating fast electron beam using picosecond lasers. The properties of the electron beam, such as energy spectra, determines the succeed heating process and the yield. In this study, with 2D particle-in-cell simulations, we find that the energy transfer ratio would significantly increase, and the energy spectra would be lifted up in the dual-color injecting scheme, where an extra weak low-frequency laser is injected with the main pulse. These phenomena are attributed to the longitudinal electric field modulation in low-density region and electromagnetically-induced-transparency process in the microchannels formed near the critical surface. Our results can be applied to fast ignition schemes and experimental designs of super-hot electron generation with different pulse durations. For example, in the DCI project with a fast ignition scheme, such a dual-color intense picosecond laser facility is under construction to control the fast electron generation and enhance the laser transparency.

Abstract:Deuteron-triton (DT) fusion is the primary fusion reaction used in controlled fusion research, mainly for its relatively high reaction cross sections compared to other fusion options. Even so, to attain appreciable reaction probabilities very high temperatures (on the order of 10–100×106K) are required, which are extremely challenging to achieve and maintain. Here, it is shown that intense low-frequency laser fields, such as those in the near-infrared regime for the majority of intense laser facilities around the world, are highly effective in transferring energy to the DT system and enhancing the fusion probabilities. The fusion probabilities are shown to be enhanced by, at least, an order of magnitude in 800-nm laser fields with intensities on the order of 1021W/cm2. The demanding temperature requirement of controlled nuclear fusion may be relaxed if intense low-frequency lasers are exploited.

Abstract:In this article that summarized some papers submitted to the 21th IAEA Fusion Energy Conference, the recent most important advancements in inertial confinement fusion are reported. For the traditional central hot spot ignition scheme, National Ignition Campaign to establish the scientific basis for the first ignition demonstration in indirect-drive implosion on National Ignition Facility is defined. Key scientific and technological questions to scale up ignition demonstration are being experimentally verified on the OMEGA and the Z/ZR facility using D2 and DT cryogenic fuel targets. For the alternative ignition scheme-fast ignition, significant progress of target physics has been made in recent two years, the enhancement of the hot electron flux and the reduction of the divergent angle of the electron beam found in the cone target experiments highlight the latest meaningful findings. Abstract:We comment on Marvel Fusion's proposal to use ultra-short, intensive laser pulses impinging on nanostructured targets for the production of hot ions, with the ultimate aim of energy production through the p-11B fusion reaction. We show how a minimum requirement on the line density of the heated region arises also for such schemes aiming at ignition or just beam-energy amplification, which already for the D-T reaction are prohibitive if no pre-compression of the target is foreseen. We conclude that advanced ultra-short laser pulses can be of use for fusion applications only if the fusion reaction time can be brought down to sufficiently short values. This can happen only via strong pre-compression of the target, which appears difficult to reconcile with a nanostructured target and in particular with the fuel assembly geometries shown by the proponents.

Abstract:For many decades, the running joke in fusion research has been that `fusion' is thirty years away and always will be. Yet, these past few years we find ourselves in a position where we can now talk about the milestones of burning plasmas, fusion ignition, and target energy gain greater than unity (scientific breakeven) in the past tense. Fusion is no longer a joke! Yet getting to fusion ignition, the tipping-point of thermonuclear instability resulting in an explosive increase in ion thermal temperature and fusion reaction-rate, and scientific breakeven (target gain, fusion yield/deposited laser energy , in the laser-driven inertial confinement fusion context) has not been easy. In this publication we discuss our present understanding of the physics and technological challenges surrounding ignition and Gain as well as highlight some outstanding problems that still need resolution.

Abstract:The quest for the inertial confinement fusion (ICF) ignition is a grand challenge, as exemplified by extraordinary large laser facilities. Fast isochoric heating of a pre-compressed plasma core with a high-intensity short-pulse laser is an attractive and alternative approach to create ultra-high-energy-density states like those found in ICF ignition sparks. This avoids the ignition quench caused by the hot spark mixing with the surrounding cold fuel, which is the crucial problem of the currently pursued ignition scheme. High-intensity lasers efficiently produce relativistic electron beams (REB). A part of the REB kinetic energy is deposited in the core, and then the heated region becomes the hot spark to trigger the ignition. However, only a small portion of the REB collides with the core because of its large divergence. Here we have demonstrated enhanced laser-to-core energy coupling with the magnetized fast isochoric heating. The method employs a kilo-tesla-level magnetic field that is applied to the transport region from the REB generation point to the core which results in guiding the REB along the magnetic field lines to the core. 7.7 $\pm$ 1.3 % of the maximum coupling was achieved even with a relatively small radial area density core ($\rho R$ $\sim$ 0.1 g/cm$^2$). The guided REB transport was clearly visualized in a pre-compressed core by using Cu-$K_\alpha$ imaging technique. A simplified model coupled with the comprehensive diagnostics yields 6.2\% of the coupling that agrees fairly with the measured coupling. This model also reveals that an ignition-scale areal density core ($\rho R$ $\sim$ 0.4 g/cm$^2$) leads to much higher laser-to-core coupling ($>$ 15%), this is much higher than that achieved by the current scheme.
