Abstract:Abstract An examination is made of the relationship between the Indus Valley Civilization and Indo-Aryan origins, a topic that has received a tremendous amount of attention from Indian archaeologists and historians. The issue discussed is whether the Indo-Aryans preceded, succeeded, or co-existed with the inhabitants of the Indus Valley cities. The different sections of the chapter look at archaeological evidence on the religion of the Indus Valley, evidence on the decline of the river Sarasvatī (which is referred to many times in the Ŗgveda, the oldest of the Sanskrit Vedic texts), the absence of the horse from the Harappan record (although it played an important part in the Vedic-Aryan culture), evidence of the spoked-wheel chariot (which is fundamental to Aryan identification), the Indus script, and urbanization and the Ŗgveda.

Abstract:Introduction Ancient India's first civilization arose on the plains of the Greater Indus Valley of Pakistan and north-western India during the second half of the third millennium BCE ( c. 2500–1900 BCE). This has come to be called the Indus Civilization and was the first period of urbanization in the Indian subcontinent. The great cities of the Indus Civilization were Mohenjo-daro and Harappa, both in Pakistan. Mohenjo-daro today is on the western bank of the Indus river in the province of Sindh, and Harappa, 650 km to the north-east, is on the southern bank of the Ravi river in the West Punjab. The ancient Indus peoples lived in a society with marked social classes and craft and career specialists, some of whom knew the art of writing. They engaged in long-distance trade with the Arabian Gulf, Mesopotamia, Iran, Afghanistan and central Asia. There is no reference to the Indus Civilization in the historical documentation of the subcontinent. This is a contrast to Mesopotamian civilization and Dynastic Egypt, which were noted in the Bible and other literature. But the Vedic texts of ancient India, the earliest of the subcontinent's historical literature, contain no direct reference to the Indus Civilization, and the discovery of these ancient peoples was purely through archaeological excavation (Possehl 1999: 38–154). The chronology of the Indus Civilization is based on radiocarbon dates, confirmed by good cross-ties to the early history (Akkadian period) of Mesopotamia. Undoubted Indus artefacts (e.g. stamp seals, etched carnelian beads, pottery) have been found in Mesopotamia, and at Susa in south-western Iran.

Abstract:THIS book is difficult to handle fairly. It aims at giving an account of the mode of life of a primitive people as it develops from the stage of the simple hunter and food-gatherer to that of the small farmer at the point of transition from the use of stone to that of metal. The author describes the culture of the old and the new stone ages, and then passes on to give an account in considerable detail of the culture of the extinct Tasmanians and of the Indians of North America, who may be said to be, in a cultural sense, no less extinct. The book is brought to a close with a description of the Abors, the little-known, and for long inaccessible, people living between the Assam valley and the Tibetan borderland. These people are taken as exemplifying in modern times a type of culture which has been shown to have existed in the stone age.

It publishes specialized research on ancient Iranian religion and the Indian religions, such as the Veda, Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism (including Tibetan). The Journal welcomes epigraphical studies as well as general contributions to the understanding of the (pre-modern) history and culture of South Asia. Illustrations are accepted. A substantial part of the Indo-Iranian Journal is reserved for reviews of new research. The Journal predominantly publishes articles in English and occasionally in French and German.

Abstract:Basic Every architectural style expresses a fundamental idea that is unique to a certain culture and time period. In this sense, the architecture of Indian Hindu temples represents the values of science, art, architecture, and culture in addition to serving as the home and site of devotion for God. Temple customs and practices have persisted throughout history and into the present, having a significant impact on the social and cultural life of the populace and upholding ancient Indian values. Hindu temple architecture has been significantly influenced by Hinduism and philosophy over the ongoing evolutionary process. For this reason, historical studies on Indian temple architecture and the ideas used in the construction of holy Hindu temples from ancient times have been highlighted by book collections, films, literary works, and theoretical study. The procedure involves the talents required for the construction of such buildings. These factors have highlighted the art, science, and philosophy that underpinned the construction of Hindu temples, which were the same in antiquity as they were in the past. the persistence of custom and science, which date back to the earliest human experiences.

Abstract:This book offers the first detailed comparative study of the seven bestdocumented early civilizations: ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, Shang China, the Aztecs and adjacent peoples in the Valley of Mexico, the Classic Maya, the Inka, and the Yoruba. Unlike previous studies, equal attention is paid to similarities and differences in their sociopolitical organization, economic systems, religion, and culture. Many of this study’s findings are surprising and provocative. Agricultural systems, technologies, and economic behaviour turn out to have been far more diverse than was expected. Yet only two basic types of political organization are found – city-states and territorial states – and they influenced economic behaviour at least as much as did environmental differences. Underlying various religious beliefs was a single, distinctive pattern that is unique to early civilization and must have developed independently in different regions of the world. Many other shared religious beliefs appear to have been transformations of a shared heritage from earlier times. Esteemed lifestyles that differed idiosyncratically from one early civilization to another influenced human behaviour in ways that often persisted despite changing material and political circumstances. These findings and many others challenge not only current understandings of early civilizations but also the theoretical foundations of modern archaeology and anthropology. The key to understanding early civilizations lies not in their historical connections but in what they can tell us about similarities and differences in human behaviour.

Taking account of significant new findings from archaeology and literary analysis, it is shown that early mathematical astronomy arose in India in the second millennium BC. The paper reviews the astronomy of the period of the Vedas, the Brahmanas, and the Vedanga Jyotisha. The origins of Puranic cosmology are also explained.

Abstract:The classical account of the Brahmin priestly class and its role in Indian religion has seen remarkable continuity during the past two centuries. Its core claims appear to remain unaffected, despite the major shifts that occurred in the theorizing of Indian culture and in the study of religion. In this article, we first examine the issue of the power and status of the Brahmin and show how it generates explanatory puzzles today. We then turn to 18th- and 19th-century sources to identify the cognitive conditions which sustained the classical account of the Brahmin priest and allowed for its transmission. Three clusters of concepts were crucial here: Christian-theological ideas concerning heathen priesthood and idolatry; racial notions of biological and cultural superiority and inferiority; and anthropological speculations about ‘primitive man’ and his ‘magical thinking’. While all three clusters were rejected by 20th- and 21st-century scholarship, the related claims about Brahmanical ritual power continue to be presented as facts. What accounts for this peculiar combination of continuities and discontinuities in the study of (ancient) Indian religion? We turn to some insights from the philosophy of science to sketch a route toward answering this question.

The goals of social transformation in India are evolutionary in strategy but revolutionary in content. Leaders of the Indian independence movement understood that social structure, history, and tradition form the foundation of society, setting the parameters for social reform plans, objectives, and methods.

Abstract:The Asmarakandhi, which is a Javanese translation of an Arabic book entitled Bayān ‘Aqīdat al-Uṣūl by Abū’l Laith Naṣr b. Muḥammad al-Samarqandī (d. 373/983), is to be discussed in this study. Abū’l Laith’s text belongs to the earliest theological primers in Java, possibly first introduced on Java’s North Coast by Chinese merchants from the Ḥanafī legal school. For many centuries, Asmarakandhi was an authoritative source for new students of Islam before it fell into general disuse during the course of the twentieth century. Contrary to common belief, Abū’l Laith’s text is not as simple as it seems, containing several controversial issues.

Abstract:This study, titled "Beyond Belief: A Scientific Inquiry into the Myths and Looms of Hindu Rituals," explores the myths surrounding Bengali rituals among Hindus and investigates the relationship between science and these rituals, with a focus on birth and marriage ceremonies. Employing content analysis and meta-research, the study examines four research questions to uncover the persistent myths in the minds of Hindus, the connection between science and rituals, and the role of science in these practices. The sample consists of 46 papers and articles, primarily drawn from community-based convenience samples, and a systematic review of literature from Google Scholar and Scopus databases guides the research. The data collection involves segmenting texts, coding, and analyzing recurring themes, while manual coding processes and primary and secondary data comparisons inform the data analysis. Key findings reveal that rituals associated with birth and marriage, often deemed superstitions, have logical and scientific explanations. However, despite scientific clarity, myths persist, and science itself becomes a platform for new beliefs. The study emphasizes the limitations of science in addressing humanity's challenges, suggesting a focus on individual actions over blind faith in science. The research advocates for educational initiatives to raise awareness, urging governments to introduce programs in schools that foster scientific literacy and critical evaluation of traditional practices, contributing to a more informed and rational society.

Abstract:The Indus Civilization, often denoted by its major city Harappa, spanned almost two millennia from 3200 to 1300 BC. Its tradition reaches back to 7000 BC: a 5000 year long expansion of villages and towns, of trading activity, and of technological advancements culminates between 2600 and 1900 BC in the build-up of large cities, writing, and political authority; it emerges as one of the first great civilizations in history. During the ensuing 600 years, however, key technologies fall out of use, urban centers are depopulated, and people emigrate from former core settlement areas. Although many different hypotheses have been put forward to explain this deurbanization, a conclusive causal chain has not yet been established. We here combine literature estimates on brick typology, and on urban area for individual cities. In the context of the existing extensive data on Harappan artifact find sites and put in their chronological context, the combined narratives told by bricks, cities, and spatial extent can provide a new point of departure for discussing the possible reasons for the mysterious "decline".

Abstract:in the Veda is merely an aspect of Vedic Weltanschauung : water is regarded here as a form of Soma, the divine essence of vital force. And if, as our author holds, Varuna is the chief deity of this water-cult, so much the worse for his argument, for Varuna is thoroughly Vedic and Aryan, though he belongs to a cult-circle other than that of Indra. Since the Yaksa-cult was definitely a popular one, Dr. Coomaraswamy is probably right in discerning in it germs of the bJiaUi-m.ovem.ent of later times. He remarks : " as the greater deities could all, from a popular point of view, be regarded as Yaksas, we may safely recognize in the worship of the latter (together with Nagas and goddesses) the natural source of the Bhakti elements common to the whole sectarian development which was taking place before the beginning of the Kusana period " (I, p. 36). I would however prefer to say : " one of the natural sources." Apart from these not very material questions, Dr. Coomaraswamy's studies are excellent in all respects, throwing much valuable light on important issues and laying students of Indian religion and art under a weighty debt of obligation.

Abstract:India is an ancient nation with diverse cultures, which are articulated and depicted through different tribes, communities, castes, and ethnic groups. Kabbaliga (Koli) and its associated communities are one of the ancient tribal groups found across the subcontinent of India under different names. Culturally and religiously, they are Hindus with diverse traditional beliefs systems and practices. They worship different deities, saints, philosophers, and personalities from different generations together. Jokumaraswami (commonly called Jokumara) is a popular folk deity of these associated communities in both the central and northernregions of Karnataka state. He is believed to be a deity of rain, agricultural prosperity, and well-being. There are numerous folk tales and songs on the origin of Jokumaraswami and his antecedents on earth. The study aims to know about the socio-cultural aspects of the Kabbaliga and its associated communities and the worship of folk deities in Karnataka. Anthropological techniques such as observation, participant observation, and informal interviews were used to gain a better understanding of these associated groups social and cultural lives.

Abstract:Archaeology: The Basics, rewritten for this fourth edition, is a short, engaging book that takes the reader on a journey through the fascinating world of archaeology and archaeologists. Written in a non-technical style by two experienced archaeologists and writers about the past, the book begins by introducing archaeology as a unique way of studying the entire span of the human past from our origins some six million years ago to today. The authors stress that archaeology is a global study of human biological and cultural diversity. After a brief look at early archaeological discoveries, they introduce today’s multidisciplinary archaeology. Then they go on to describe the archaeological record, the archives of the past and the importance of contexts of time and space. How do we find archaeological sites and how do we explore them?
