Abstract:We present updated type information on the Tasmanian species of ferns and lycophytes described by Labillardière in his Novae Hollandiae plantarum specimen of 1806. Among the 13 names introduced, we list a total of 80 specimens with type status (13 lectotypes and 67 isolectotypes), mainly from FI, which houses Labillardière's herbarium (and the main set of plants) in FI‐W, but also from B (including B‐W), BM, F, G, GH, K, L, LE, MEL, P (including P‐JU), PRC, RB, and WAG. Another nine specimens are cited as probable isolectotypes, since they lack confident label data. Four lectotypifications and one second‐step lectotypification are newly proposed. Some specimens previously regarded as "holotypes" are better referred to as inadvertently chosen lectotypes. We show evidence that Lindsaea lanceolata Labill. (= L. ensifolia Sw. subsp. ensifolia), although originally described from Tasmania, was probably mislabeled, and the specimen was actually from Amboyna (= Ambon), Indonesia. We provide an Appendix with links to online images of nearly all type specimens.

Abstract:The typification of the currently accepted names of 14 pteridophytes, i.e., ferns and lycophytes, which are definitely endemic to São Tomé and Príncipe, is reviewed. Lectotypes are designated for a number of names and previous typifications are reassessed and corrected, if needed. The types of the names of three further pteridophytes, one endemic to the Gulf of Guinea and two widespread ones, are also discussed.

Abstract:We reexamine the taxon Spiranthes stylites, currently synonymized under S. australis, finding multiple lines of evidence from molecular phylogenetics, phenology, morphology, and habitat differences to support its distinction from other members of the Spiranthes sinensis species complex. Compared to its closest relative S. australis, S. stylites blooms earlier (June - early July vs. mid July - September), has consistently white tubular flowers (vs. commonly pink and pseudocampanulate), a distinctly long-clawed labellum (vs. shortly clawed), slender labellum nectar callosities (vs. globose), a proportionally larger column foot (ca. 50% of the length of the entire column vs. ca. 25%), and occurs in closed canopy woodlands (vs. open graminoid habitats). Spiranthes stylites is the only Spiranthes in the Eastern Hemisphere to have a woodland habitat. The recognition of S. stylites helps support white colored flowers as the plesiomorphic and most common floral condition in the complex, and indicates pink colored flowers likely arose independently in S. australis and S. sinensis s.s.
<i>Smilax weniae</i>, a New Species of Smilacaceae from Limestone Areas Bordering Guizhou and Guangxi, China

Abstract:A new species, Smilax weniae (Smilacaceae), from Southwest China, is described and illustrated. The new species bears peltate leaves, which was previously a unique feature of S. luei. However, it differs from the latter by having a broad ovate leaf blade, longer peduncle, and sexual dimorphic flowers. Further phylogenetic analyses revealed that the new species were placed in a unique position in a subclade of Old World Smilax based on ptDNA and nrITS sequences. Combining detailed morphological comparisons and molecular evidence, we validated that S. weniae is an undescribed new species. Moreover, the plastome characteristics of S. weniae are reported.

Abstract:Phyllanthus claussenii is one of the most frequently mentioned species of Phyllanthus sect. Phyllanthus subsect. Clausseniani in various studies. However, it is often mistaken for P. subemarginatus in most collections. In the present work, we present a clarification of the identity and geographic distribution of P. claussenii and the typification of Phyllanthus acuminatus and Savia sessiliflora. The proposal of lectotypes for P. acuminatus and S. sessiliflora will enable the accurate identification of the species and avoid potential ambiguity. To achieve this, protologues and type specimens, including digital images, were analyzed, along with specimens from collections of national and international herbaria.

Abstract:A lectotype is designated for the name of the iconic and well‐known macrolichen Ramalina menziesii Taylor from among a suite of largely overlooked syntypes deposited in the Thomas Taylor Herbarium at the Farlow Herbarium, Harvard University. Lectotypes are also selected for the synonyms of R. menziesii: Chlorodictyon foliosum, Ramalina reticulata (≡ Lichen reticulatus Noehd., nom. illeg.) and R. retiformis. The place of publication of L. reticulatus Noehd. is discussed in detail. The case highlights the surprising degree to which the application of names for taxa that have been extensively studied and are widely known outside a narrow specialist field, can remain unresolved.

Abstract:Owing to a combination of reportedly unique morphological characters and an unlocatable type specimen, Marchantiopsis stoloniscyphula has been regarded as an enigmatic species in Marchantiaceae since its description, and all subsequent taxonomic treatments of this species were made without examination of the type. We located the original material of M. stoloniscyphula which was included as an admixture within the holotype of Wiesnerella fasciaria deposited in IFP. Our morphological examination found that M. stoloniscyphula and W. fasciaria are conspecific with Marchantia papillata subsp. grossibarba and Sandea japonica, respectively. The nomenclature of Marchantiopsis and M. stoloniscyphula are discussed. Lectotypes for M. stoloniscyphula and W. fasciaria are also designated.

Microscopic characterization of petiole anatomy of Asteraceous taxa of Western Himalaya-Pakistan

Abstract:Petiole anatomy of 15 species of family Asteraceae was examined which aimed to investigate petiolar anatomical structures for species level identification. Shandon Microtome was used for petiole histological preparations. Both qualitative and quantitative features were studied under microscope which showed significant variation in petiole, collenchyma, parenchyma shape/size, vascular bundles arrangement/size, and vessel elements quantity. Artemisia japonica Thunb., Cirsium vulgare (Savi) Ten., Myriactis nepalensis Less., Seriphidium brevifolium Ling & Y.R.Ling, Taraxacum officinale (L.) Weber ex F.H.Wigg., and Xanthium strumarium L. showed winged petioles. Maximum length and width of upper and lower epidermis was found in Tagetes erecta L. which is 23.05 ± 0.89 μm, 24.9 ± 1.257 μm length and 21.75 ± 1.38067 μm, 22.75 ± 0.467 μm width, respectively. Petioles of Parthenium hysterophorus L. was longest one with 9.85 ± 10.45 μm while A. japonica Thunb. showed highest number of vessel elements. Maximum size of vascular bundles was found in T. erecta L. with 5.05 ± 14.25 μm. Artemisia annua L., C. vulgare (Savi) Ten, Cyanthillium cinereum (L.) H.Rob., Helianthus annus L., M. nepalensis Less., P. hysterophorus L., Senecio chrysanthemoides DC. have trichomes while Tussilago farfara L. has highest number of vascular bundles. All species have angular collenchyma type except M. nepalensis Less., P. hysterophorus L., S. brevifolium Ling & Y.R.Ling, Tagetes minuta L., T. officinale L., S. chrysanthemoides DC., and T. farfara L. Cluster analysis implemented that distinct plant species in cluster. Petiolar anatomical structures and taxonomic key will helpful for distinguishing Asteraceous taxa at genus and species level. This taxonomic significant investigation will also provide baseline to taxonomists for other Asteraceae studies and phylogenetic research.
Species delimitation in Xanthium sect. Acanthoxanthium (Heliantheae, Asteraceae) and the neglected species Xanthium argenteum

Abstract:Xanthium is a genus of annual herbaceous plants that stands out within Asteraceae for being wind‐pollinated, diclinous monoecious, and bearing solitary pistillate flowers in peculiar spiny structures (burs). Xanthium sect. Acanthoxanthium is native to South America and characterized by the presence of trifurcate spines at the base of the leaves. Past taxonomic treatments of the section have been contradictory, some recognising up to six species, others reducing all to a single polymorphic species. Altogether, 42 samples of X. sect. Acanthoxanthium were analysed, the vast majority taken from herbarium specimens between 20 and 160 years old. We sampled multiple specimens of X. spinosum from throughout its broad range as well as those taxa with narrower distributions, covering the whole range of morphological variation in the section. When possible, we included types and original material. We used Hyb‐Seq techniques to obtain information from about 1000 single‐copy nuclear genes and complete plastomes. Phylogenomic data were submitted to coalescent‐based species delimitation approaches (SPEEDEMON). Additionally, we performed geometric morphometric analysis of leaf outlines. The results strongly support the identification of four lineages in the section favouring the acceptance of four of the hitherto described species, i.e., X. ambrosioides, X. argenteum, X. catharticum, and X. spinosum. These results were to some extent corroborated by morphometric analyses. While X. ambrosioides was well distinct from X. spinosum based on leaf morphology, such difference was not observed between X. spinosum and X. catharticum. However, X. catharticum differs from X. spinosum in its ecological requirements, being a species rather adapted to high‐mountain environments of the Neotropics. Intriguingly, X. argenteum – a taxon described from a single herbarium collection – was also inferred as a species.

Abstract:This study is about a morphoanatomical and histochemical analysis Symplocos tetrandra (Mart.) Mart. The leaves and stem were analyzed using light and scanning electron microscopy, and qualitative chemical analysis. The investigation revealed prismatic crystals, calcium oxalate druses and brachysclereids. These findings suggest potential anatomical markers for species identification and differentiation. The Symplocaceae family comprises 406 species, all of which are classified within a single genus, Symplocos Jacq., which is distributed across multiple continents. In Brazil, this genus is predominantly found in the Atlantic Forest and Cerrado regions and is characterized by the presence of secondary metabolites, such as iridoids, terpenoids, and saponins with biological activities. Moreover, the literature research has unveiled the potential of this genus for antimicrobial, antitumor, and anti‐HIV applications. This research conducted morphoanatomical, histochemical studies using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis of the leaves and stems of Symplocos tetrandra (Mart.) Mart. Cross‐sections and paradermal were performed. The investigation revealed the presence of prismatic calcium oxalate crystal in petiole and druses calcium oxalate crystals, in petiole and leaf blade. Paracytic stomata on the abaxial surface, lignified pith in the stem, which was detected with the phloroglucinol staining. Oil bodies, uniseriate epidermis, and a thin lipidic cuticle were confirmed with Sudan III. These findings suggest potential anatomical markers for taxonomic classification of the species. The data obtained in this study contributes for species identification, and the presence of metabolites can guide future pharmacological investigation with S. tetrandra.

Abstract:Xantolis weimingii sp. nov. ( Sapotaceae ) is described and illustrated from Yunnan, southwest China. The new species is morphologically most similar to X. tomentosa (Roxb.) Raf., but differs from the latter in the ovate or obovate leaves, entirely glabrous corollas, lanceolate, ca. 5 mm long staminodes, fringed at the base. We provided a distribution map and a preliminary conservation assessment for the new species. Additionally, an updated dichotomous key to all known species of Xantolis is presented.

Abstract:Here we propose a lectotypification and a new name for the Brazilian Psychotria dusenii Standl. to be treated under Palicourea Aubl. The name Psychotria dusenii sensu Standley is illegitimate because it was previously assigned to an African Psychotria L. species described by K. Schumann. The new name proposed is Palicourea roseocalycina Torres-Leite.

Abstract:This paper deals with typification of three species names in Isoetes described from France: the lectotype previously designated for I. delalandei J.Lloyd is here superseded by another lectotype according to new evidence, and lectotypes are designated for I. echinospora Durieu and I. tenuissima Boreau. Selected specimens are preserved at ANG for I. delalandei, and at P for the two others. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) images of the spores, known to provide important routine characters in Isoetes, were acquired from the types, and information about the loci classici are provided. Isoetes echinospora and I. tenuissima have currently disappeared from their loci classici.

Abstract:Phlomoides is the second largest genus within Lamiaceae subfamily Lamioideae, and China is one of three diversity centers of the genus. In this study, we described and illustrated a new species, Phlomoides cuonaensis, from Cuona City, Xizang Autonomous Region, China. Molecular phylogenetic analyses revealed that P. cuonaensis and two morphologically similar species, P. hamosa and P. longiaristata, form a distinct clade within Phlomoides. Synapomorphies of this small clade are hooked floral bracts and calyx spines. The new species differs from the other two in trichome density and size on the calyx, floral bract, and nutlet, and in the length of the calyx and bract. Micro-morphological features of nutlets of these three species were examined using scanning electron microscopy. In addition, a lectotype for the name Notochaete hamosa (≡ Phlomoides hamosa) was designated.
