Abstract:β zeolite with high Si/Al has low rear-earth exchanging capacity so that high rare-earth load rare earth β zeolite is difficult to be prepared by post-treating ways such as impregnating or ion-exchanging.This paper took advantage of low structure stability of 13X zeolite and prepared a high rare-earth load rare earth β zeolite by in-situ method,which was featured by the medium of rare earth exchanged 13X zeolite.The high rare-earth load,good pore texture and high acidity extent its application in catalysis,and exhibited the enhancement of catalysis performance on fluid catalytic cracking process.
Fluoride-free hydrothermal synthesis of nanosized Sn-Beta zeolite via interzeolite transformation for Baeyer-Villiger oxidation

Abstract:<p>Sn-containing Beta (Sn-Beta) zeolite is extensively applied in industrially-relevant reactions as a highly active and robust Lewis acid heterogeneous catalyst. Nonetheless, environmentally-unfriendly fluoride is generally required to the directly hydrothermal synthesis of Sn-Beta. In this work, an innovative strategy of interzeolite transformation with steam-assisted conversion is provided to directly synthesize Sn-Beta zeolite in the absence of fluoride. Silica source of FAU and steam-assisted conversion were two necessary factors for the successful synthesis of Sn-Beta zeolite. It was found that highly crystallized Sn-Beta zeolite with isolated framework Sn ions was hydrothermally synthesized via degradation of siliceous FAU zeolite and recrystallization of degraded silicate species. As far as we know, the crystal of Sn-Beta in this work was minimum in size among all present directly hydrothermal synthesized ones. More importantly, the Sn contents in Sn-Beta could achieved to 2.39 wt % (Si/Sn = 81), breaking through the Sn content restriction of conventional fluoride-mediated method. In addition, the hydrophobicity of this resultant Sn-Beta zeolite was slightly inferior to Sn-Beta-F obtained via traditional fluoride-assisted route. Whereas the smaller crystal size of this Sn-Beta gave rise to relatively good diffusion performance for organics, which made it reveal high activities in the Baeyer-Villiger oxidant of ketones in particular employing bulky <em>tert</em>-butyl hydroperoxide as the oxidant. The current strategy provides an alternative and environmentally-friendly method for the hydrothermal synthesis of Sn-Beta without the assistance of fluoride and alkali metal ions, which can guide further development in metallosilicates crystal engineering in terms of greenization.</p>
Synthesis of Zeolite ZSM-5 Small Particle Aggregates by a Two-Step Method in the Absence of an Organic Template

Abstract:The preparation of zeolite ZSM-5 without using a template was extensively investigated. Zeolite ZSM-5 small particle aggregates were synthesized in the absence of a template using sodium silicate as the silica source and by controlling the nucleation time at high temperature with a simple two-step method in a rotating autoclave on a spit within an oven. The first stage at higher temperature consisted of accelerating the nucleation and the second stage at lower temperature consisted of obtaining small crystals in the absence of a template. The resulting zeolites were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, ammonia temperature-programmed desorption, and N2 adsorption. Compared with the micron-sized zeolite crystals that are synthesized in the one-step method, zeolite ZSM-5 small particles prepared by the two-step method have a higher specific surface area and an equivalent acid site content. The sample synthesized by the two-step method mainly contains Brönsted acid sites and a few Lewis acid sites indicating that Al is incorporated into the framework of the zeolite.

Abstract:Small crystal zeolite Beta with SiO2/Al2O3 ratios ranging from 30 to 400 has been synthesized in a biphasic H2O–CTAB–Alcohol system using colloidal precursor which contains secondary building units of zeolite Beta as the silica and aluminum sources. The experimental results evidenced that the synthesis system employed here resulted in readily the formation of small crystal size zeolite Beta, and the crystallite aggregates consisting of many small particles with size close to the range of nanometer were obtained. The obtained zeolite Beta samples synthesized in the biphasic system displayed higher catalytic activity for n-hexane hydrocracking than that synthesized in single aqueous system.

Abstract:High-silica Beta zeolites, typically synthesized by hydrothermal synthesis with the assistance of F– or seed, is highly important in the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) adsorption. Fluoride-free or seed-free synthesis of high-silica Beta attracts great attention. Herein, highly dispersed Beta zeolites with size of 25–180 nm and Si/Al ratios of 9–∞ were successfully synthesized by a microwave-assisted hydrothermal strategy. We have for the first time reveal that microwave irradiation can induce the formation of hydroxyl free radicals (•OH), promoting the formation of Si–O–Si bond. Thanks to the high total surface area, pore volume and excellent hydrophobicity, the as-prepared pure-silica Beta zeolite presents a higher toluene adsorption capacity in the VOCs adsorption compared to other pure-silica Beta zeolites prepared by traditional methods. This work provides a facile avenue for fluoride-free and seed-free synthesis of nanosized high-silica zeolites, promising their important applications in the VOCs adsorption.

Abstract:The pure-silica zeolite BETA has a promising prospect in the field of cigarette harm reduction and petrochemical industry. In present work, the single-template method, named as the seed-direct steam-assisted crystallization (SAC), was used to synthesize the pure-silica zeolite BETA. And then the samples were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), nitrogen adsorption, and Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The results revealed that BETA seeds, template (TEAOH) and alkalinity exert great effects on the synthesis of pure-silica zeolite BETA. The BETA zeolite with polymorph A enrichments (58%-68%) is synthesized by SAC method, which can not be affected by the change of molar ratio of the raw materials. The pure-silica zeolite BETA possesses the hydrophobic properties, which can be used in the separation of organic/H2O, and the removal of harmful organic materials in cigarette smoke.

Abstract:Nanosized zeolite beta with a tuneable crystal morphology and size, rich intercrystalline mesoporosity and high catalytic activity for low-density polyethylene cracking, was fast transformed from a low-seeded, low-templated dry gel by a seeding-steam-assisted conversion method with a small quantity of water; the crystallization of zeolite beta is well induced within 28 h at a TEAOH/SiO2 of 0.1 with the aid of 1% seeds.

Abstract:Organic molecules are widely used as structure directing agents, mesopore generating agents or zeolite growth modifiers in the synthesis of various zeolites. However, the organic molecules used in zeolite synthesis are mostly positively charged cationic molecules, since the cationic group can balance the negative charge in zeolite structure. Here we investigate for the first time to apply an anionic surfactant fatty alcohol polyoxyethylene ether ammonium sulfate (AESA) in the crystallization of zeolite Beta. It is found that both the crystallization process and the characteristic of the product were affected by the addition of AESA into the synthesis. Compared with that without AESA, it shows that the induction period was significantly prolonged for the synthesis of zeolite Beta with AESA, and the crystallinity and the completeness of the crystal were improved. The yield of product was increased when AESA was used in the synthesis. The framework Si/Al ratio was increased when AESA was added in the synthesis gel, which could be due to that the anionic surfactant AESA facilitated the formation of Si-O-Si bonds and hinders the combination of the negatively charged aluminum species to silicon species to form Si-O-Al bonds, and thus increases the incorporation of Si and reduces the incorporation of Al into the framework. Moreover, we demonstrate an ability to enrich the chiral polymorph-A in zeolite Beta by using AESA in the crystallization, with the proportion of polymorph-A in the as synthesized zeolite Beta reaching 77.9%. It is reported that AESA did not stay in the structure of zeolite Beta when the crystallization is completed, which implies that AESA plays a role as zeolite growth modifiers during the crystallization. The results of this study suggest that anionic surfactants can be used in zeolite synthesis to optimize the crystallization process and achieve zeolites with desired properties.

Abstract:Sn-beta zeolite is a promising catalyst for the direct synthesis of lactide from lactic acid; here, we clarify the relationship between its local structure and activity through the interplay of experiments and DFT calculations. The open sites (HO-Sn-(OSi)(3) with adjacent Si-OH) play a key role in the high activity of Sn-beta zeolite, where the reaction rate significantly decreases from 0.2258 mmol min(-1) (gcat)-1 to 0.0724 mmol min(-1) gcat(-1) if the open sites were masked with Na+. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the decrease in reaction rate comes from the weaker interaction between substrate and the open Sn site by Na+ exchange, which leads to the significant increase in the Gibbs energy barrier from 34.0 kcal/mol to 57.2 kcal/mol (rate-determining step). Other activities of heteroatom M-beta zeolites (where M = Ti, Zr, Hf) were also investigated, where the open sites were found to be crucial for the high activity in the direct synthesis of lactide as well. The information provided by this work is valuable for precise design of efficient catalysts for the one-step synthesis of lactide.

Abstract:Siliceous Beta zeolite and its metal-containing counterparts are effective adsorption and catalysis materials. To develop facile and efficient synthesis strategy would facilitate their large-scale production and application. Herein, we report the fluoride-free hydrothermal synthesis of siliceous Beta achieved by an inorganic cation-driven strategy. It is found that the types of inorganic cations are more critical than anions in determining the product phase. Inorganic cations with smaller sizes (such as Li+, Na+ and Mg2+) facilitate the synthesis of siliceous Beta, while the larger ones (such as K+, Ca2+ and NH4 +) tend to give rise to impurity or amorphous materials. Crystallization mechanism investigation based on the Na+-added system revealed that inorganic cations can effectively promote the fast polymerization of SiO2 colloids at the initial stage. The crystallization occurs on the polymerized composites, yielding siliceous Beta with high solid yield. The resultant material is well characterized, which possesses few framework defects, high hydrophobicity and large adsorption uptake for toluene (one of the common volatile organic compounds). Breakthrough experiments further evidence the dynamic toluene adsorption capacity of the material is 24% higher than that of siliceous Beta synthesized by fluoride route.

Abstract:Template-free synthesis of Sn-Beta zeolite was realized by oil-heated crystallization within 36 h. The SnBeta zeolite with a high surface area of 623 m(2) g-1 can efficiently catalyze the one-pot hydrothermal conversion of various sugars to lactic acid. Under the reaction conditions of 200 degrees C with a helium pressure of 4.0 MPa, the conversion of all sugars exceeds 98% within 30 min, and the yield of lactic acid reaches as high as 67.1%. For glucose conversion to lactic acid, further experiments demonstrate the essential role of the Lewis acid site at the different stages of the reaction, which is attributed to the isolated skeleton Sn in the zeolite, consistent with our and previous computational studies on this reaction. Our calculations further reveal the important role of the Bronsted acid site of moderate strength, such as lactic acid itself, in the conversion of glyceraldehyde to pyruvaldehyde, an important step in the formation of lactic acid from glucose, resulting in self-catalysis.

Abstract:The Sn substituted Beta nanocrystals have been successfully synthesized by in-situ hydrothermal process with the aid of cyclic diquaternary ammonium (CDM) as the structure-directing agent (SDA). This catalyst exhibits a bifunctional catalytic capability for the conversion of glucose to hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). The incorporated Sn acting as Lewis acid sites can catalyze the isomerization of glucose to fructose. Subsequently, the Brønsted acid function can convert fructose to HMF via dehydration. The effects of Sn amount, zeolite type, reaction time, reaction temperature, and solvent on the catalytic performances of glucose to HMF, were also investigated in the detail. Interestingly, the conversion of glucose and the HMF yield over 0.4 wt% Sn-Beta zeolite nanocrystals using dioxane/water as a solvent at 120 °C for 24 h are 98.4% and 42.0%, respectively. This example illustrates the benefit of the in-situ synthesized Sn-Beta zeolite nanocrystals in the potential application in the field of biomass conversion.

Abstract:Zeolites synthesized without any organic structure-directing agent (OSDA) have several advantages over conventional zeolites synthesized with OSDAs. Their Al-rich compositions, however, are sometimes not suitable for applications as catalysts. In the present study, post-synthetic modification was performed using an Al-rich Beta zeolite synthesized without any OSDAs (designated as “Beta(OF)”) to obtain high-silica Beta zeolites. We have successfully developed a facile post-synthetic method for tuning the Al content of Beta(OF) with the *BEA-type structure retained by calcination at >750 °C followed by acid treatment. Solid-state 29Si and 27Al MAS NMR analyses revealed that during calcination, framework Al atoms were isomorphously substituted with Si atoms to form high-silica frameworks and concomitant extra-framework Al species. The stability of the obtained frameworks against acid treatment was evaluated in terms of the framework Al content, finding that the framework with the Si/Al ratio higher than 12 is well stabilized enough for acid treatment. Thus, dealuminated Beta(OF) zeolites with high-silica compositions were found to be effective catalysts for the methanol-to-olefin (MTO) reaction; particularly, the Beta zeolite with the Si/Al ratio of 112 maintained the conversion of methanol over 90% with selectivity to C2–C4 olefins over 70% even at 40 hours on stream at WHSV = 3.2 h−1.

Abstract:A series of low silica X zeolites (LSX) was synthesized through a seed-iteration approach, based on the seed addition strategy, and then loaded with lithium ions by an ion exchanging method to obtain high N 2 adsorption capacity. These zeolites were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and N 2 adsorption-desorption, and the adsorption capacity of N 2 and O 2 was evaluated by the vacuum pressure swing adsorption (VPSA) operation. The results showed that the nucleation period of the synthetic process could be effectively shortened by adding seed; as the seed iterations increased, the specific surface area and pore volume of the zeolites increased; the higher specific surface area and the pore volume, the higher the extent of the N 2 adsorption capacity, with the maximum reaching 28.05 cm 3 /g. However, there were no significant differences in the adsorbed capacity of O 2 by each sample. Therefore, the N 2 /O 2 separation factor also increased gradually with iterations, with the maximum up to 6.61.

Abstract:Hierarchical Beta/MCM-41 composites have been synthesized by kinetically controlling the assembly process of nano-building blocks around hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) micelles. Composites with different microzeolitic–mesoporous properties were prepared from three typical beta zeolite precursors. Without disturbing the intrinsic acidity of the zeolites, the obtained composites exhibited improved catalytic performance in n-decane cracking.

Abstract:Application of ultrasound power to the mother liquor is popular pretreatment for zeolite synthesis which offers a simple way of accelerating crystallization process and finetuning the properties of nanocrystalline zeolites. In this work, sonication-aided synthesis of mesoporous ZSM-5 at low temperature and ambient pressure was systematically studied, in an attempt to reach efficient and benign synthesis of zeolites with hierarchical pore structure, which has wide applications as catalysts and sorbents. The effects of sonication duration, power density, sonication temperature and seeding on the crystallization of ZSM-5 were investigated. The obtained samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, BET and VOCs capture. High quality mesoporous ZSM-5 can be obtained by a facile 5 d synthesis at 363 K, much faster than conventional hydrothermal synthesis. The reduced synthesis time was mainly attributed to the enhanced crystallization kinetics caused by the fragmentation of seeds and nuclei, while sonication radiation had little impact on the nucleation process. Compared with control sample, mesoporous ZSM-5 prepared by sonochemical method had higher surface area and mesoporosity which demonstrated improved adsorption performance for the capture of isopropanol.
