Abstract:The book Teaching Machines: The History of Personalized Learning by Audrey Watters (2021) is of interest to the readers of the Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior because the roots of teaching machines and programmed instruction are in the experimental analysis of behavior. Furthermore, the book addresses use‐inspired basic research in education, one of our country's most pressing problems. The review begins with an introduction, followed by an overview of the book chapters, extending the historical, cultural, and behavior‐analytic context presented by Watters. Particular emphasis is placed on the work of two not‐so‐well‐known researchers in behavior analysis, Susan Meyer Markle (1928–2008) and Benjamin Wyckoff (1922–2007). The review continues with an assessment of the audience for the book and its contributions to behavior analysis and some perspectives. An overarching theme throughout the review is the importance of learning and teaching the history of behavior analysis.

Abstract:The current processes for building machine learning systems require practitioners with deep knowledge of machine learning. This significantly limits the number of machine learning systems that can be created and has led to a mismatch between the demand for machine learning systems and the ability for organizations to build them. We believe that in order to meet this growing demand for machine learning systems we must significantly increase the number of individuals that can teach machines. We postulate that we can achieve this goal by making the process of teaching machines easy, fast and above all, universally accessible. While machine learning focuses on creating new algorithms and improving the accuracy of "learners", the machine teaching discipline focuses on the efficacy of the "teachers". Machine teaching as a discipline is a paradigm shift that follows and extends principles of software engineering and programming languages. We put a strong emphasis on the teacher and the teacher's interaction with data, as well as crucial components such as techniques and design principles of interaction and visualization. In this paper, we present our position regarding the discipline of machine teaching and articulate fundamental machine teaching principles. We also describe how, by decoupling knowledge about machine learning algorithms from the process of teaching, we can accelerate innovation and empower millions of new uses for machine learning models.

Abstract:Reading the 26 essays of this well-regarded book now in its third edition was such a pleasurable experience that I wanted to teach a course in which I might assign it to my students. The text would be of particular interest to engineering students—it is about their profession—as well as of interest to people in the field of the history of technology. The main strength of the work is its sometimes novel choice of topics. Its occasional weakness is the failure of some important subjects to appear. Historians of technology will recognize some familiar names in the list of essayists. Merritt Roe Smith writes about Eli Whitney's role in the American system of manufacturing and demolishes the notion that Whitney pioneered manufacturing with interchangeable parts. Thomas Parke Hughes writes on Thomas Edison, and Ruth Schwartz Cowan on Ellen Swallow Richards, in 1870, the first woman to graduate from MIT and the driving force behind the establishment of the discipline of home economics.

Abstract:With the introduction of screen media and 1:1 devices in the classroom, educators are finding themselves in a unique position; navigating new technological platforms, changing their teaching methods and pedagogy to adapt, and oftentimes, competing for their students’ attention. Some important factors for classroom implementation and practice are the need for learner preference, differentiation, high quality applications, and a complementary balance between traditional methods of learning and the usage of screen media. Many teachers have observed the benefits of adopting new technology, but have concerns with its integration. Classrooms in the United States have undergone a significant change because of the use of screen media, including laptop computers (i.e. Chromebooks), and digital textbooks. While using technology in the classroom is undoubtedly not a novel concept, utilizing technology in place of traditional textbooks is relatively new. The motivation for this article was my personal experience and interest in technology for learning purposes. I have taught middle school students for 16 years, and throughout this time I have seen technology substitute traditional textbooks in various subject areas. Additionally, I have seen the effects of reading from a paper source and from screens, as well as the various strategies learners apply while using both to process the information. As a lifelong learner, I remain abreast of the most recent studies and advice on literacy for children, as well as technology use with adolescents. I incorporate best practices in my classroom. This article will provide ideas that have proven successful, not only in my classroom, but also in empirical research. Keywords: Screen media, differentiation, pedagogy, Chromebooks

Abstract:While much has been written about the personal, social, and democratic benefits of networked communities and participatory learning, critics have begun to draw attention to the ubiquitous data collection and computational processes behind mass user platforms. Personal and behavioral data have become valuable material for statistical and machine learning techniques that have the potential to profile, infer, and predict people's needs, values, and behavior. As a response, researchers are calling for data literacies and computational thinking to facilitate people's capacity and volition to make informed actions in their digital world. Yet, efforts and curricula towards a greater understanding of computational mechanisms of new media ecology are sorely missing from K12-education as well as from teacher education. This paper provides an overview of tensions that teachers and educators will face when they attempt to bridge participatory learning with a more robust understanding of machine learning and algorithmic production of social and cultural practices.

Abstract:Teachers, schools, districts, states, and technology developers endeavor to personalize learning experiences for students, but definitions of personalized learning (PL) vary and designs often span multiple components. Variability in definition and implementation complicate the study of PL and the ways that designs can leverage student characteristics to reliably achieve targeted learning outcomes. We document the diversity of definitions of PL that guide implementation in educational settings and review relevant educational theories that could inform design and implementation. We then report on a systematic review of empirical studies of personalized learning using PRISMA guidelines. We identified 376 unique studies that investigated one or more PL design features and appraised this corpus to determine (1) who studies personalized learning; (2) with whom, and in what contexts; and (3) with focus on what learner characteristics, instructional design approaches, and learning outcomes. Results suggest that PL research is led by researchers in education, computer science, engineering, and other disciplines, and that the focus of their PL designs differs by the learner characteristics and targeted outcomes they prioritize. We further observed that research tends to proceed without a priori theoretical conceptualization, but also that designs often implicitly align to assumptions posed by extant theories of learning. We propose that a theoretically guided approach to the design and study of PL can organize efforts to evaluate the practice, and forming an explicit theory of change can improve the likelihood that efforts to personalize learning achieve their aims. We propose a theory-guided method for the design of PL and recommend research methods that can parse the effects obtained by individual design features within the "many-to-many-to-many" designs that characterize PL in practice.

Abstract:In the Internet age, the proliferation of multimedia computer technology (MCT) brings unprecedented opportunities to English teaching in colleges. This paper firstly carries out a questionnaire survey on the current status of personalized teaching of college English, and summed up the main problems with the current teaching mode. On this basis, the authors developed an MCT-based personalized English teaching design, with the aid of information technology (IT) and online teaching platform. To verify its effect, the proposed design was tested through contrastive experiment. The results show that the MCT-based personalized English teaching design could improve the interests and performance of English learning, and cultivate a good learning habit. In summary, this paper explores the personalized teaching of college English from both theoretical and practical angles, laying a good basis for high-quality English teaching and personalized development of students.

Abstract:Iteratively building and testing machine learning models can help children develop creativity, flexibility, and comfort with machine learning and artificial intelligence. We explore how children use machine teaching interfaces with a team of 14 children (aged 7-13 years) and adult co-designers. Children trained image classifiers and tested each other's models for robustness. Our study illuminates how children reason about ML concepts, offering these insights for designing machine teaching experiences for children: (i) ML metrics (e.g. confidence scores) should be visible for experimentation; (ii) ML activities should enable children to exchange models for promoting reflection and pattern recognition; and (iii) the interface should allow quick data inspection (e.g. images vs. gestures).

Abstract:Computers have become everyday tools in the contemporary classroom. Laptops, tablets, smartphones, electronic whiteboards and other computing devices are constantly used to support instructors and students in the teaching-learning process, providing personalized and enriched educational content, as well as collaboration and learning analytics tools. In this article, we revisit the Classroom eXperience platform after 10 years of continuous use and present its evolution to incorporate collaboration, personalization, recommendation and assessment visualization features. We describe the general architecture of the platform as a paradigm for authoring and extending multimedia educational content, generating learning objects that can later be customized according to students' learning styles. We also highlight and bring together the main results obtained during our long-term experience, focusing on how they impacted users. By providing personalized and relevant content, the platform can help students stay engaged and motivated throughout the educational process and, ultimately, improve their learning outcomes.

Abstract:This article introduces a special issue comprising research on efforts to personalize learning in different academic subjects. We first consider the emergence of personalized learning (PL) and the myriad of definitions that describe its essential features. Thereafter, we introduce the articles in the special issue by examining their alignment to extant theories of learning, the instructional design features that personalize the learning experience based on a learner characteristic, and the relationships between PL design and outcomes achieved in an educational context. Based on observations of contemporary PL research, we identify key issues to be addressed by the field and recommendations for future researchers to undertake to advance a PL theory. Chief among issues with PL are the role of technology, the agency of the learner, and the absence of a consistent theoretical grounding to motivate PL design choices. Future directions that would advance PL include the adoption of a theory of change in PL design, a design-based research approach to refine PL initiatives, more intensive and iterative research in authentic classroom contexts, and a greater focus on student input into and ownership of the PL experience.

Abstract:Over the past decades, numerous practical applications of machine learning techniques have shown the potential of AI-driven and data-driven approaches in a large number of computing fields. Machine learning is increasingly included in computing curricula in higher education, and a quickly growing number of initiatives are expanding it in K–12 computing education, too. As machine learning enters K–12 computing education, understanding how intuition and agency in the context of such systems is developed becomes a key research area. But as schools and teachers are already struggling with integrating traditional computational thinking and traditional artificial intelligence into school curricula, understanding the challenges behind teaching machine learning in K–12 is an even more daunting challenge for computing education research. Despite the central position of machine learning and AI in the field of modern computing, the computing education research body of literature contains remarkably few studies of how people learn to train, test, improve, and deploy machine learning systems. This is especially true of the K–12 curriculum space. This article charts the emerging trajectories in educational practice, theory, and technology related to teaching machine learning in K–12 education. The article situates the existing work in the context of computing education in general, and describes some differences that K–12 computing educators should take into account when facing this challenge. The article focuses on key aspects of the paradigm shift that will be required in order to successfully integrate machine learning into the broader K–12 computing curricula. A crucial step is abandoning the belief that rule-based "traditional" programming is a central aspect and building block in developing next generation-computational thinking.
