Abstract:The book Teaching Machines: The History of Personalized Learning by Audrey Watters (2021) is of interest to the readers of the Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior because the roots of teaching machines and programmed instruction are in the experimental analysis of behavior. Furthermore, the book addresses use‐inspired basic research in education, one of our country's most pressing problems. The review begins with an introduction, followed by an overview of the book chapters, extending the historical, cultural, and behavior‐analytic context presented by Watters. Particular emphasis is placed on the work of two not‐so‐well‐known researchers in behavior analysis, Susan Meyer Markle (1928–2008) and Benjamin Wyckoff (1922–2007). The review continues with an assessment of the audience for the book and its contributions to behavior analysis and some perspectives. An overarching theme throughout the review is the importance of learning and teaching the history of behavior analysis.

Abstract:The current processes for building machine learning systems require practitioners with deep knowledge of machine learning. This significantly limits the number of machine learning systems that can be created and has led to a mismatch between the demand for machine learning systems and the ability for organizations to build them. We believe that in order to meet this growing demand for machine learning systems we must significantly increase the number of individuals that can teach machines. We postulate that we can achieve this goal by making the process of teaching machines easy, fast and above all, universally accessible. While machine learning focuses on creating new algorithms and improving the accuracy of "learners", the machine teaching discipline focuses on the efficacy of the "teachers". Machine teaching as a discipline is a paradigm shift that follows and extends principles of software engineering and programming languages. We put a strong emphasis on the teacher and the teacher's interaction with data, as well as crucial components such as techniques and design principles of interaction and visualization. In this paper, we present our position regarding the discipline of machine teaching and articulate fundamental machine teaching principles. We also describe how, by decoupling knowledge about machine learning algorithms from the process of teaching, we can accelerate innovation and empower millions of new uses for machine learning models.

New data, old tensions: Big data, personalized learning, and the challenges of progressive education

Abstract:Personalized learning has become the most notable application of big data in primary and secondary schools in the United States. The combination of big data and adaptive technological platforms is heralded as a revolution that could transform education, overcoming the outdated classroom model, and realizing the progressive vision of interest-driven and self-initiated learning. Yet, even supporters concede that, in practice, personalized learning is geared toward behaviorist models of learning. This article explores how this gap between expectation and reality concerning big data can be understood as a reflection of existing tensions within progressive education. To explain the tension, I examine the interplay between Rousseau and Dewey’s theories of education, and the novel opportunities offered by big data. I hold that personalized learning could be understood as an iteration of Rousseau’s vision of well-regulated freedom, in which students’ freedom is perceived as a means toward increasing the effectiveness of their learning. The relegation of decision making to algorithms renders this regulation more feasible and justifiable. Dewey’s critique of Rousseau’s individualized and teleological model of education offers the contours of an alternative role for big data in education, which prioritizes social interaction and the cultivation of democratic citizens. Moreover, due to the increased capacity to operationalize complex learning processes in naturalistic learning environments, big data could allow tackling some of the lingering challenges to implementing Dewey’s approach.

Abstract:This essay explains how, from the theoretical perspective of Basil Bernstein's three "conditions for democracy," the current pedagogy of artificially intelligent personalized learning seems inadequate. Building on Bernstein's comprehensive work and more recent research concerned with personalized education, Natalia Kucirkova and Sandra Leaton Gray suggest three principles for advancing personalized education and artificial intelligence (AI). They argue that if AI is to reach its full potential in terms of promoting children's identity as democratic citizens, its pedagogy must go beyond monitoring the technological progression of personalized provision of knowledge. It needs to pay more careful attention to the democratic impact of data‐driven systems. Kucirkova and Leaton Gray propose a framework to distinguish the value of personalized learning in relation to pluralization and to guide educational researchers and practitioners in its application to socially just classrooms.
Illuminating the dark side: A typology for preservice ELA teachers engaging in ideologies of digital texts

Abstract:Set in English Language Arts, this article takes up recent trends in literacy toward investigating ontological notions of digital texts. Two teacher educators recently implemented a series of readings and activities in their methods courses designed to help preservice teachers sophisticate their conceptions of texts beyond autonomous, neutral collections of information by considering digital age ideas such as software theory, textual ideology, and the algorithmic bias of the Internet. The authors review recent scholarship surrounding the integration of computational thinking and the humanities before illustrating a theoretical framework that combines software-driven interpretation and critical media literacy. Descriptions and applications of course texts and exercises precede a discussion on typological methodology. Through the analysis of semester-long writing reflections and course interactions, a typology of preservice teachers is then presented, illustrating three archetypes: Strategists, Hawkeyes, and Improvers. These archetypes are taken up to analyze the ways in which a range of teacher candidates considered ontological notions of digital texts to analyze instructional techniques, to sharpen their critical lenses, or to gain greater understanding of ELA as a discipline (or some combination of all three). This work demonstrates that as teacher educators and teacher candidates increasingly consider software-powered literacies, interrogations of who we are, who we are becoming, and what it all means requires attention to, and explicit practice with, the dark side of digital texts.

Abstract:Reading the 26 essays of this well-regarded book now in its third edition was such a pleasurable experience that I wanted to teach a course in which I might assign it to my students. The text would be of particular interest to engineering students—it is about their profession—as well as of interest to people in the field of the history of technology. The main strength of the work is its sometimes novel choice of topics. Its occasional weakness is the failure of some important subjects to appear. Historians of technology will recognize some familiar names in the list of essayists. Merritt Roe Smith writes about Eli Whitney's role in the American system of manufacturing and demolishes the notion that Whitney pioneered manufacturing with interchangeable parts. Thomas Parke Hughes writes on Thomas Edison, and Ruth Schwartz Cowan on Ellen Swallow Richards, in 1870, the first woman to graduate from MIT and the driving force behind the establishment of the discipline of home economics.

AI-Powered Learning: Making Education Accessible, Affordable, and Achievable

Abstract:We have developed an AI-powered socio-technical system for making online learning in higher education more accessible, affordable and achievable. In particular, we have developed four novel and intertwined AI technologies: (1) VERA, a virtual experimentation research assistant for supporting inquiry-based learning of scientific knowledge, (2) Jill Watson Q&A, a virtual teaching assistant for answering questions based on educational documents including the VERA user reference guide, (3) Jill Watson SA, a virtual social agent that promotes online interactions, and (4) Agent Smith, that helps generate a Jill Watson Q&A agent for new documents such as class syllabi. The results are positive: (i) VERA enhances ecological knowledge and is freely available online; (ii) Jill Watson Q&A has been used by >4,000 students in >12 online classes and saved teachers >500 hours of work; (iii) Jill Q&A and Jill Watson SA promote learner engagement, interaction, and community; and (iv). Agent Smith helps generate Jill Watson Q&A for a new syllabus within ~25 hours. Put together, these innovative technologies help make online learning simultaneously more accessible (by making materials available online), affordable (by saving teacher time), and achievable (by providing learning assistance and fostering student engagement).

The Turing Teacher: Identifying core attributes for AI learning in K-12

Abstract:Introduction: Artificial intelligence in the educational domain has many uses; however, using AI specifically to enhance education and teaching in a K-12 environment poses the most significant challenges to its use. Beyond usage and application, the quality of the education is made even more arduous due to the dynamics of teaching primary and secondary school children, whose needs far exceed mere fact recollection. Utilizing prior research using AI in education and online education in the K-12 space, we explore some of the hurdles that AI applications face in K-12 teaching and provide core attributes for a "Turing Teacher," i.e., an AI powered technology for learning, specifically targeting the K-12 space. Methods: Using a survey, which included qualitative responses during the implementation of online learning during the Covid Pandemic, we analyze the results using univariate and multivariate tests and analyzed the qualitative responses to create core attributes needed for AI powered teaching technology. Results: The results present the challenges faced by any technology in an education setting and show that AI technology must help overcome negative feelings about technology in education. Further, the core attributes identified in the research must be addressed from the three stakeholder perspectives of teachers, parents and students. Discussion: We present our findings and lay the groundwork for future research in the area of AI powered education. The Turing Teacher must be able to adapt and collaborate with real teachers and address the varying needs of students. In addition, we explore the use of AI technology as a means to close the digital divide in traditionally disadvantaged communities.

Abstract:Iteratively building and testing machine learning models can help children develop creativity, flexibility, and comfort with machine learning and artificial intelligence. We explore how children use machine teaching interfaces with a team of 14 children (aged 7-13 years) and adult co-designers. Children trained image classifiers and tested each other's models for robustness. Our study illuminates how children reason about ML concepts, offering these insights for designing machine teaching experiences for children: (i) ML metrics (e.g. confidence scores) should be visible for experimentation; (ii) ML activities should enable children to exchange models for promoting reflection and pattern recognition; and (iii) the interface should allow quick data inspection (e.g. images vs. gestures).

Abstract:While much has been written about the personal, social, and democratic benefits of networked communities and participatory learning, critics have begun to draw attention to the ubiquitous data collection and computational processes behind mass user platforms. Personal and behavioral data have become valuable material for statistical and machine learning techniques that have the potential to profile, infer, and predict people's needs, values, and behavior. As a response, researchers are calling for data literacies and computational thinking to facilitate people's capacity and volition to make informed actions in their digital world. Yet, efforts and curricula towards a greater understanding of computational mechanisms of new media ecology are sorely missing from K12-education as well as from teacher education. This paper provides an overview of tensions that teachers and educators will face when they attempt to bridge participatory learning with a more robust understanding of machine learning and algorithmic production of social and cultural practices.

Abstract:The era of artificial intelligence (AI) is upon us. This article presents AI-based technologies that are changing the learning and teaching process. The article discusses the potential of personalized learning, automated assessment, chatbots, predictive models, intelligent robots, and virtual and augmented reality for education, based on a review of the research literature. In today's world, it is essential for educators to be familiar with these technologies. The study concludes by summarizing the appropriate use of these technologies, the role of teachers, their attention to students, and their active communication, as these are all essential for effective education in the age of artificial intelligence. Teachers play a vital role in helping students use AI ethically and effectively. Our survey showed that teachers, regardless of their age or subject, are open to using AI-powered teaching tools. This is a positive development, as educators in today’s digital world should not deprive students of these technologies but find ways to use them to make the learning process more engaging and effective. Active communication and collaboration between teachers and students are essential, as only through joint effort can they take advantage of digital technologies. All of this is essential for effective education in the age of artificial intelligence. In the age of AI, the professional development of teachers requires a Comprehensive approach that includes specific skills and proficiencies, deliberate Techniques, collaborative learning, and a dedication to continuous improvement.

Abstract:This paper examines visions of 'learning' across humans and machines in a near-future of intensive data analytics. Building upon the concept of 'learnification', practices of 'learning' in emerging big data-driven environments are discussed in two significant ways: the training of machines, and the nudging of human decisions through digital choice architectures. Firstly, 'machine learning' is discussed as an important example of how data-driven technologies are beginning to influence educational activity, both through sophisticated technical expertise and a grounding in behavioural psychology. Secondly, we explore how educational software design informed by behavioural economics is increasingly intended to frame learner choices to influence and 'nudge' decisions towards optimal outcomes. Through the growing influence of 'data science' on education, behaviourist psychology is increasingly and powerfully invested in future educational practices. Finally, it is argued that future education may tend toward very specific forms of behavioural governance – a 'machine behaviourism' – entailing combinations of radical behaviourist theories and machine learning systems, that appear to work against notions of student autonomy and participation, seeking to intervene in educational conduct and shaping learner behaviour towards predefined aims.
