Abstract:In the view of rapidly expanding 2D materials, borophene is a recent promising substance for electronic application and gas sensing. This work is focused on the effect of the fluorine-terminated edge of borophene nanoribbon, where it demonstrates semiconducting behavior and gas sensing potential. The zigzag borophene nanoribbon behaves as a metal, while the borophene nanoribbon with a fluorinated edge works as a semiconductor with a proper indirect band gap. The potential applications of the edge-fluorinated borophene nanoribbon (FBNR) as a gas sensor has been explored in detail. The atomic structure optimization of FBNR is performed to achieve the lowest energy structure and, therefore, gives the most stable atomic configuration. First, using energy and distance analysis, it is shown that the interaction of a CO gas molecule with FBNR is stronger than the interaction of each of NO, CH4, H2S, N2 and NH3 gas molecule with FBNR. Then, by applying density functional theory, the total density of states is analyzed to confirm the gas adsorption of FBNR. Furthermore, based on the Landaur formula, we calculate the current–voltage curves before and after gas molecule adsorption. The results show that FBNR has better adsorption performances with CO and NO gases than those with other gases molecules. Consequently, we should mention that our proposed elemental 2D material has the potential to be used as an efficient and selective CO and NO gas sensors.
