Abstract:A local gradient theory for non-ferromagnetic thermoelastic dielectrics is used to study the effect of near-surface inhomogeneity on the coupled fields in nano-size piezoelectric solids subjected to the thermal and electric loading. In this theory, the local mass displacement is linked to the microstructure ordering of the material including atomic arrangements (reordering) at the surface/interface regions. It is shown that within this non-classical theory, the interaction between electric, thermal, and mechanical fields can be studied in elastic media including isotropic centrosymmetric materials. The analytical solutions to the boundary-value problems for thermoelastic polarized infinite layers with free and clamped surfaces are obtained on plane-strain assumption. Based on these solutions, the linear response of the electric polarization of isotropic layer to the temperature gradient is studied. The expression for the disjoining pressure appearing in nano-thin films with clamped surfaces is found as well. The obtained results could be potentially useful to the design of novel nano-composite materials and devices that utilize small-scale piezoelectric elements as constituting blocks. Special attention is given to the fundamental solutions to the wave equations for the elastic continuum with considering the effect of local mass displacement. It is found that the local gradient theory allows one to avoid the singularity of the electric potential of the point charge in an infinite dielectric medium.
